For me, Pink Floyd often feels like nostalgia about a future you imagined as a kid but it never materialised. Or like longing for a past that never existed or that you never knew.
This song is a perfect example of what Pink Floyd music is great at. It doesn't tell you what to think. It opens your mind and allows you to feel what the musicians are feeling and thinking. It involves you in what's being performed and communicated.
Oh Beth, your timing is excellent. This was the song played at my brothers funeral this week for a period of reflection and remembrance. It was one of his favourites. Thank you.
This song has me tear up every time I hear it as at age 60, I have lost so many loved ones and the sentiment of wishing they were here is a constant. David's ability to sing along with his guitar so perfectly is absolutely magical. Pink Floyd has been a favorite band of mine for most of my life at this point. Thanks for this reaction. ❤
@@loriwoodrow2711 yes, at 61 years now, I have very emotional responses to many Pink Floyd songs also. True genius blend of musicianship, songwriting, and lyrics😍
It's ok to be speechless and overwhelmed. There has never been anything like Pink Floyd and there will never be again. I love what you do and how you do it
I’ve been a guitarist for 37 years, and a fan of Pink Floyd and particularly David Gilmour for at least as long. If I had to pick a top 5 favourite guitarists of all time, depending on what day it is that list may change, but one thing that would remain constant is that David Gilmour would always be on that list. He is by far and without a doubt one of the most tasteful guitarists I have ever heard. His choice of notes, phrasing and emotional connection to the song is impeccable. Every solo is a song within the song. Breathtaking, like an enveloping warm hug from a long lost friend. He’s 78 now and still at the top of his game. Please also check out some of his recent recordings he has done with his daughter Romany on vocals.
Pink Floyd is ethereal. I'm almost 57 now, this song reminds me of all those lost along the way. Of how much I'd like to have another coffee with them. There are always some tears in hearing this.
This song was written as a tribute to Syd Barrett who was one of the founding members of the Floyd. He went clinically insane from habitual psychedelic drug use. They essentially lost their friend to drugs and they wished he was still sane. Syd died in 2007.
I saw Pink Floyd on this tour in 1994, and it remains the best concert I ever attended. The sound was stunning. David's guitar solos remain seared in my memory. What a show.
Seeing your joy in hearing this classic was perfect, you lit up when he started singing alongside his guitar. This song takes everyone somewhere else. Richard Wright on keyboards sets the atmosphere while David Gilmour’s guitar makes magic. While his guitar is critically acclaimed his vocals are underrated IMHO. Great reaction Bethany.
If you want to get the full Pink Floyd experience, read about the album background. In the case of Wish you Were Here - absence is a key theme (missing someone, original frontman Syd Barret who suffered a mental breakdown; and something, purpose in life after making it to the big time with Dark Side of the Moon album), as well as disillusionment with the music industry and how it uses musicians like Syd for profit without caring about them or their wellbeing. This is expressed on the album's artwork (businessman with the face absent, man diving into a lake with absence of splash or waves, businessmen shaking hands with one getting burned). Listen to the album all the way through, it's a single work of art exploring these themes in one long thread. Doing this you will get an emotional connection to the music in a way not possible listening to a single song from the album.
I started in the 90's listening to Pink Floyd, mostly their stuff from the mid to late 70's that everyone knows, but then in the early 2000's I started going back to the 60's and that sound is way different. Song's like Flaming, Julia Dream, Cirrus Minor have that more psychedelic feel but still the calmness this has. Then there are songs like The Gnome That feels straight out of Tolkien. Then they had songs like Bike, and Arnold Layne that are more fun, yet almost silly. It's all good mind you, but it gets even more diverse when you look at where they started.
You have just reacted to my favorite Pink Floyd song. Your smile while listening to this said it all. There is a lot more Pink Floyd to go so keep going!
Their music has been transporting me since I was a kid. It really is something you feel rather than simply listen to. Thanks for letting us into your Pink Floyd journey.
If transportative isn't a real word, when it comes to Pink Floyd, it should be. You're right, in a lot of cases their music takes you somewhere, and at least for me the mental imagery their music conjures up is pretty special. Don't feel bad about feeling flustered or emotional after listening to Wish You were Here, it's a unique, special, beautiful song, and those are appropriate reactions IMO. Thanks for reviewing this one, it's a special song for me.
I saw them live back in the late 70's. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. It was a magical experience. David Gilmour says so much with so few notes. He's amazing !!!
I've been listening to Pink Floyd since 1975, when they released Wish You Were Here. I have a whole collection of LPs, including film releases. No one will ever produce music like this again. They played from the soul for the good of the soul. Not for money. And that's why they made huge money and millions of people listen to them even after 50 years.
I don't have kids or a wife... this song makes me wish I could give some of my years to my dog I had to put down. I'd give him enough years so we'd both die at the same time. I miss my buddy so much.
My appreciation for this band and their music is on a whole other level than it was when I was a young man. There will never be another band this profound.
What they always tapped into was just pure emotion, their songs speak to literally everyone. The magic I think is in the simplicity. You can’t exactly say he is a complicated or incredible singer or guitar player, but every note is still perfect and just right, warm like a blanket on a cold day. You can say say that about all of the instruments and band members, and the lyrics. Complexity through simplicity if that makes sense. This song in particular, is about “absence”, and musically there is absence in not having all this over the top instrumentation yet it is still sounds so warm, full, and emotional. I think you put it well when you said you can’t quite pick out what it is that makes their music so deep.
There's a soothing, cascading quality to the vocals that is incredibly relaxing and joyous to listen too. It's like you're gliding along atop the music like a comforting waterslide.
there is a depth and wisdom that PINK FLOYD brings to you when you listen to it..... it's almost like that warm snuggle your grandfather gives you as he lovingly shares life experience stories w you, things that he lovingly knows you need to better navigate your world and life is it comes to you - the writing and examples of life that they share are all so common in experience you can't help to stop and reflect as you listen to them. #TIMELESS
As beautifully evocative lyrics go, this one is hard to top. You nailed it. Pink Floyd were exceptional at transporting listeners into a different emotional realm.
Pink Floyd are a genre all of their own . People may have preconceived notion of what they are prior to delving into their catalogue but they stand alone from all other bands . The lyrics are all important to listen to , the melodies will transport you to other places and Dave Gilmours guitar will touch your soul . The rarest of bands who will genuinely play with your emotions and even question life . Their albums are not individual songs , each track continues the story of the album from one track to another . Stay with them , they will stay with you for life .
The very beginning you hear a muffled sound of someone turning the dial of a AM radio, it's a call back to when the members of Pink Floyd were just teenagers and how they would listen to the radio to try to figure out the chords of their favorite songs. "Wish You Were Here" is a nod to one of the 4 founding members of Pink Floyd in 1964, Syd Barrett. Barrett developed a serious drug problem, (LSD and other mind-altering drugs), and mental issues which led to his demise. By the end of 1967 Barrett could no longer perform or even function as a person, mentally he was gone. By 1968 his good friend, and friend of the band, David Gilmour, took over for Syd in Pink Floyd, he's the one singing this song. At this time of Floyd's career there are only 3 actual members of the band, the others musicians and singers onstage here are PF's touring band at the time. The 3 members of PF are David Gilmour, (lead vocals, guitar), Nick Mason, (founding PF member,... drums, percussion), and Rick Wright, (also a founding PF member,... keyboards vocals).
I love it how young people are getting speechless to express how they feel listening to another best Rock Classic Album of all time - I grew up with Pink Floyd in the 70s and I felt the same way when the album came out...pure magic and so many overwhelming moments...it's the pure art! (btw I'm German and not perfect in English) 👍🙏❤
Original Pink Floyd members declaration of love, for their lost bandmate and artistic bandleader, Syd Barrett,, 💔💔💔 So is "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", both songs are from the album, Wish You Were Here, from 1976.✨❤🔥🥰❤🔥✨
This was the song that led me to guitar, his slides, the slight bends varying the hammer on’s sometimes sliding down to a pull off other times bending to the note the mixture and variance was mesmerizing to me so Id sit and repeat it over and over till I had to let my hands recover. I feel that you always draw in Pink Floyds music, sitting there feeling free with all your feelings. They always touch my soul. The story behind this song is also gut wrenching as it is about Sid......
Pink Floyd is one of those bands of transformative music that's best experienced by listening to the whole album. They were one of the pioneers of the concept album in their genre of music. For this music, you do yourself a minor disservice by listening to it piecemeal with singles. Listen to one of their albums all the way through. You don't have to do a reaction of it. Just do it for yourself.
Please don’t apologize for getting emotional! Witnessing you having a visceral reaction to music we know and love is why we come here. If want heartless and less and cold I’d read a magazine article
"Their music is so diverse"... yes! Pink Floyd is my favorite. Their sound has changed in different and interesting ways. Also, they had innovative ideas. For example, the song Us and Them (on Dark Side of the Moon) had echoing, at a time when there were no echoing electronics. Roger Waters recorded his voice with timed precision, and they laid that voice track down multiple times to achieve the echo effect.
When looking at a guitar that is being held in the playing position, the string on top is (almost always) the lowest pitch and the string on the bottom is the highest pitch. The first guitar that comes in is a 12 string guitar. The four lowest pitched strings have another string right next to them that are tuned an octave higher. The last two high pitched strings also have accompanying strings that are tuned to the same pitch. Since it is nearly impossible to get all the strings tuned exactly, the 12 string guitar provides a very lush and full sound - filling in a lot more frequencies than a typical 6 string. It's kind of like playing 2 guitars at once with the second guitar playing an octave higher. The sound from an acoustic guitar is very dependent on the wood that is used and how it is made. Even two guitars of the same model from the same company using the same wood can sound a bit different. So, when David starts playing chords on his six string, along with the 12 string, it is an amazing sound for him to layer his vocals over. I imagine it as the guitars are making the softest, most luxurious bed you could imagine and David's vocals are the refreshingly cool, silk sheets sliding over the top.
Step in and float away you said.....its so organic,so real, so calming,,prob the reason we did so many mind altering drugs listening to this album as if it was keeping us grounded when we needed it and floating away when we needed it...
I don't think there's any other band that not only have covered so many different types or music ("Country and Western" [a Blues Brothers ref], Blues, jazz, etc but mastered them each for the most part.
Gilmour not only a great guitar player but he is a great singer and musician, understands the entire song. His guitar work is melodic and singable and that is not a mistake. One of the very best. Please react to "Scattered" off his recent album. Very moving.
Pink Floyd is probably one of the top bands to be able to convey emotions through their music especially with David Gilmours guitar playing and singing. Wish You Were Here, On The Turning Away, and Comfortably Numb are my top 3 favorite songs of theirs, in no particular order of course! :)
Pink Floyd is tough the songs are mostly written as part of story, like chapters in a book. They seem to fit to better as a whole and when you are finally let in on them intended meaning have a greater resonance. And as you mentioned that’s not even taking into account the musicianship.
David Gilmore does have a nice soothing voice. This and most of the Pink Floyd lyrics were written by Roger Waters and one about a former band member who had a mental breakdown. COMFORTABLY NUMB is another great live vocals. David Gilmore had some great hits on his first solo album like; THERE'S NO WAY OUT OF HERE! Great Reaction as usual! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎🎸🤟🏼
Pink Floyd/David Gilmore the greatest of the great, have spent many many hours with headphones on starting back to when they first began right up until this day, Rock/Orchestral/Folk they encompass it all and tell a great story each and every time❤
"Immersive" is the word you're looking for. This song is not one of theirs that transports you elsewhere or outwards (of which they have a few). This one draws you inside the soundscape and the feel. The music in this particular instance is not a vehicle for you. It is a gorgeously sad and embracing vortex.
Pink Floyds are legends and one of the biggest ever! < you can't go wrong with this band. They are in their own universe and will take you with them every time you need it! :) ♥
It's one thing to be able to play the guitar that proficiently. It's another thing entirely to play it that proficiently and sing that proficiently at the same time. Doing it on an acoustic guitar with those massive strings bends...awe-inspiring. It takes a lot of finger strength to be able to bend those thick acoustic strings and he intonates perfectly and doesn't miss a single note. And something very characteristic of David Gilmour's playing is that he almost never plays live exactly what is on the recording. There's always some tweak that makes you think..."Where the heck did that come from?"...but it always sounds beautiful. Have a listen to Us and Them from Dark Side of the Moon. You won't be disappointed.
For me, Pink Floyd often feels like nostalgia about a future you imagined as a kid but it never materialised. Or like longing for a past that never existed or that you never knew.
That was beautifully put. Thank you.
David Gilmour's guitar work has always been about emotion rather than flash.
Yes. David’s solos really aren’t that difficult to play but they never sound as good as him because of his tone and dynamics.
Gilmour is one of the best guitarists that has ever lived and breathed. His playing is just so beautiful.
This song is a perfect example of what Pink Floyd music is great at. It doesn't tell you what to think. It opens your mind and allows you to feel what the musicians are feeling and thinking. It involves you in what's being performed and communicated.
Great reaction, Bethany! Listening to Pink Floyd is always an experience. Seeing them live was an EXPERIENCE!
I never got to see Pink Floyd live. However, I did get to see Gilmour this past November on the Luck and Strange tour. He is still phenomenal.
Oh Beth, your timing is excellent. This was the song played at my brothers funeral this week for a period of reflection and remembrance. It was one of his favourites. Thank you.
Don’t worry about being flustered. David has been flustering me for over 50 years
No other band lets you sink into dreams or float on clouds with their music. Their music finds a direct path from your ears to your soul.

I think it's feeling. They felt it, and it comes out in the playing, so we feel it too.
For me, the melancholy of listening to Pink Floyd is something like the sweetness of being sad. Roger wrote, David gave soul.!!

Roger was a great lyricist.
Pulse is such a great live performance captured for DVD and CD.
This was the song that led me to guitar, his slides, the slight bends varying the hammer on’s sometimes sliding down to a pull off other times bending to the note the mixture and variance was mesmerizing to me so Id sit and repeat it over and over till I had to let my hands recover. Pink Floyd is the one band that will do that to people. Not to worry, it just shows how effective their music is to the soul.
Great reaction. ❤PF’s 🎶
So wonderful to see my favorite band bring such a beautiful smile to your face. Enjoy your Pink Floyd journey.
One of my fav songs from my fav album, enjoyed your reaction Bethany!

Creating a beautiful ambience that you just want to step into and float away. Yeah, I think you understand Pink Floyd just fine.
“We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl” melts me every time. I miss home.
Welcome to the rabbit hole. Comfortably Numb from this same concert and the Turning Away from a live 1987 show
This is one of the few songs that can make me weep like a child.
Ahhh Bethany, a true hippie at heart ❤️
Truly, a song for the Ages.
I knew you'd love it when his singing aligned with his guitar solo! Timeless song.
You are such a beautiful person Bethany. Love to watch your videos. Thank you!
Gilmour is the human translator/voice of the guitar

Even if transportative is not a word (no red underline so looks good!), it certainly conveys the right thing.
Their music is ethereal. Magic. Mysterious and mythical. A genre unto themselves.

Pink Floyd ia the perfect escape hatch to another sonic world. Been mine since I was a kid.
This could be why the albums are on the top five best selling albums of all time. You should definitely check out more.
String instruments often sing, cry, and soar just as much as the human voice. :)
A quote from Dave Mustaine, "David Gilmour can do more with one note than most other guitar players can do with the whole fretboard". Enough said.

Pink Floyd maybe isn't for everyone. But I have never heard anyone my entire life, question their talent and quality.
Pink Floyd/David Gilmore the greatest of the great, have spent many many hours with headphones on starting back to when they first began right up until this day, Rock/Orchestral/Folk they encompass it all and tell a great story each and every time❤
Fantastic reax, Bethany, thank you!
Oh, it transformed my life starting in the early 70’s 😎
I was waiting for that reaction
