The song "Between Two Points" was originally performed by a British duo called The Montgolfier Brothers. 1990’s the Gilmour’s nailed it and upgraded it!❤
Michael, you really need to check out that whole interview with David that Beato did. He talks about this band and Romany and this song. He said he gave the band free rein to do what they thought was right in the production of the song. He was going to sing it, but said it didn't sit right, so he called Romany to stop in to cut the vocals on her way to catch a train (or something). He said that she had to have pulled this out of her subconscious from hearing the song when she was growing up, because she nailed it. And she did. You made an EXCELLENT observation that I did with this song. There is a LOT going on, but at the same time, there is SO much space between everything. It allows the song to breathe and have a heartbeat and every note and every chord is sitting exactly where it needs to be. I have listened to this SOOO many times over the last couple weeks. Great Job on the reaction.
I remember David saying this is a cover but cant remember from who. Either way, he and Romany made it their own with the way they approached it and the vocals... the vocals make you fall in love with her voice. Its just haunting, and fills me with joy seeing them playing together like this, bonding like only a father and a daughter can, while being band mates at the same time. Just beautiful.
I like how passionate you are when watching great musicians deliver a great performance. Like a kid in a toy store. It's contagious and it makes me want to pick up the guitar. The sign of an excellent teacher.
Absolutely love this song! Romany's voice is so perfect for this song. Her annunciation of the words is so angelic. If you haven't see a side by side photo of Romany and David when he was young, check it out! David could not deny Romany is his daughter!
David Gilmour is one of a kind. It's good to see younger people appreciating it. I was hooked when I heard the album 'Dark Side of the Moon' in the '70's.
What an amazing breakdown of Between Two Points ... I love this song it is simple yet complex in structure and vocals, I can listen to it forever and never get bored ... Respect to you
Insanely powerful song. Big fan. Highly recommend this soundcheck version. The video of soundcheck version just adds to the mood more in my opinion! It’s a must listen Michael!!!!
Had the great pleasure of seeing David at one of the MSG shows. One of the greatest shows I’ve ever attended. So much talented musicianship on that stage, so many layers, such a mood created and, of course, David playing like no one on earth does. Great breakdown Michael!
@ It was mine too. The show was a splurge as we don’t live in NYC. I’m 71, David is 78. If not now, when? Worth every single penny. That concert is still in my consciousness
The first time I heard this was when it was released and I thought, what a simple song - but it's not! It lends itself to more. It's catchy and it goes through my head on repeat. It's lovely. And David's solo at the end just rips your heart in two. So glad you got to hear this and your reaction was priceless. Thank you!
Loved your breakdown of that and even more the fact that you were genuinely hearing it for first time. I saw this performed at Hollywood Bowl and was completely blown away. You captured that awe so well!
Maybe I'm only speaking for myself, but the emotional reaction I had when I first listened to this song all the way through was the exact same sense of "wow" that I had when I first heard Sinead O'Connor singing Nothing Compares To You. We might well be listening to the arrival of a new global star.
Great react Michael, thank you as always for teaching us non-musicians a little about the complexities of music. Your statement “stuck in your head” is an understatement, this song has been stuck in my head and will be indefinitely. Absolutely love her voice and David Gilmour’s lead guitar is always epic.
Beautifully haunting song with some exceptional lyrics and incredible arrangement....and of course DG solo. Always enjoy your reviews. Honest, enthusiastic, thoughtful and informative. You exude a love of music and your chosen instrument. Thank you for your insights and for sharing your great love of music. Awesome
The way she looks at him during his solo around the 11:15 mark is just perfect... like "yeah, my dad's the best guitar player in the world." So very cool. So much talent. Both of them. Her voice is haunting.
It’s simply his musical language It’s how he best communicates his feelings and emotions There’s nothing else to say about it He found his voice on the instrument A true gift from the heavens ✌️
I'm so glad you did this analysis of this beautiful song. I definitely learned something from you here. I already knew how this song was structured but you said a lot of things that I hadn't thought of, so this was really great, thank you. And by the way, I loved this song from the first time I heard it. Pure class as usual!
I went to 3 of the gilmour shows here in the states. 2 in Los Angeles and 1 in NYC. The entire dynamic of the show changes once romany hits the stage. It happens late 1st set. Her presence is felt for the remainder of the show. I truly feel like I was there for something special that will likely never happen again. They're right. You're wrong...
The greatness of this song is precisely that something so simple is at the same time so deep and balanced and the lyrics tell us that being young and inexperienced we allow ourselves to be dragged, abused, trampled and manipulated and we believe them, feeling that we are the wrong ones ,when in reality we were manipulated by their lies.
And it's a cover song! You would think Gilmour would do a cover. His new record is outstanding and it so good to see even at 78 years old he's still making new music!
This kind of "guitar dialog" reminds me of the "conversations" between Gilmour and Richard Wright , just filling in the spaces that the other creates for something to happen. This is why Pink Floyd is one of the greatest bands to show how to build improv harmony and melody by pure active listening. This rendition of the song is absolute peace.
The neat thing about this song is the juxtaposition of her voice and the lyrics, it reflects the wistful spirit of a teenager with the wisdom and mortality of her father (and honestly he could be her grandfather). Even though this is a cover that David came across some years earlier, his impeccable taste is always spot on, and the idea to have his daughter sing on this was genius, it’s much better and more interesting than the original. I mean this is a dude who built a whole song around a few note jingle he heard in a train station (on Rattle That Lock).
Once Pink Floyd......always Pink Floyd. It only proves the depth David Gilmore imputed into the band itself. Gilmore doesnt think like most guitarist , he didnt have that luxury most o the time because of the arrangements he had to deal with. The guy deserves the respect he has as an aging player. Thanks for the share ; I've always got an ear tuned for Gilmores work. ron
Appreciate the breakdown. First time I heard this: amazement. Led me to the Montgolfier Brothers original. Romany brings a certain edgy innocence to the song. The entire Luck and Strange album is mastery, especially the profound Scattered.
This really brought a sense of joy to my day. It's always great - even for a non-musician - to hear Michael's special way to deconstruct a song on the fly. This amazingly beautiful song was felt even more special. Terrific! And again, very inspirational to hear about stoicism again. Well, we know what's good 😉 PS: Amazing pedal! I wish it will be a huge success! PS2: this wasn't improv at all. This time, David choose the literal take of the original (like 95% of the original solo). You can't really mess with perfection ☺️
I've seen them live in Rome, last september. It was... moving. David's not precise as he used to be, but he was on stage for us, bending notes like that. 'Between two points' is a cover but is the best Pink Floyd song since years
An additional link to PInk Floyd sound is the fact that the electric bass player in this is Guy Pratt. Guy took over for Roger Waters (post 1985) in the Gilmour, Mason & Wright's Pink Floyd's 1988 Delicate Sound of Thunder tour, and the 1994 PULSE tour.
Stating the obvious here, simple but by no means easy. Romany’s soothing vocals sealed the deal. I was rocking back and forth, truly in the moment. A whole body experience.
Massive song. Love your excitement at the simplicity of the hook but as you say that piece of the jigsaw is clean very ‘Shine on’ to my ear. Thank you bud. Rob
David Gilmour i not just a super pro/genius guitar player he is a master musical arranger if it wasn't for him they would be half of what they are... And as a non musician loved the breakdown. I've been lucky enough to see Pink Floyd twice but sadly not David on his solo tours.... Just brilliant. David creates the music, his wife writes the lyrics and their daughter sings them. What more can you ask from a family...!! Keep on rocking.
i am only 60 and have not reached emotional maturity to apreciate this work of genius, this surpasses bach, mozart paganini even pink floyd, plong pling plong on the harp made it for me,she is a virtuous harpiste too
The original version by Montgolfier Brothers is slower and a bit more sparse. Gilmour has really made it flow smoother with the arrangement and Romany has such a smooth voice. The apple definitely didn’t fall far from the tree
The song reminds me of Porcupine Tree, mostly because of her vocals. Porcupine Tree is a heavily Pink Floyd influenced prog band, so.... In Rick Beato's DG interview, David said he feels this is his best album since working Dark Side.
I absolutely love this album - especially this song and Scattered but to say it is better than Animals? I don't know. Luckily, we have them both & don't have to choose. Nice reaction.
Tour is over already. Only a handful of shows in 3 cities. I was at N1 of MSG - life changing performance. DG still got it. Romany holds her own, and you could tell it was a proud father/daughter moment. Not just a nepo-baby, she even takes one of the Great Gig in the Sky parts! Anyway, don't sleep on Gilmour's solo work. The new album is incredible. "In Any Tongue" had me in a puddle.
A new song from Gilmour himself and a Michael Palmisano's first reaction. What a treat! I'de love to have your analysis of the song "A single spark" from this new album and explain to me "Why" the guitar solo makes me shed tears 🥺

The song is just pure atmosphere
No one can say more emotionally with fewer notes. Pure magic.
Great breakdown. I’ve been listening to the album on repeat for a couple of weeks, and I can’t get this song out of my head either. It’s amazing.

The Montgolfier Brothers! Wrote this song ✍️
