I am a 65 year old guy now, and I have to admit the first time I heard this version I was driving and I had to pull over. I simply could not see for tears. For lots of reasons. The beauty, the sadness, the despair. It still makes me cry if I just sit and listen. I have known of the band for many years and even in his heaviest numbers David always stirs emotion. I've never seen your channel before, but for some reason I almost cried again when I saw your reaction. So glad it moved you.

So glad to read your observation! I felt the same when I first heard this cover. In its original form, it’s already a masterpiece. And now to have this version! Wow! You said it better than I probably could have...or at least I don’t have to put as much effort into coming up with a response. ❤

The beauty of this version is that it sounds less like a “new” version than a progression, something that I think Paul Simon felt when he gave the seal of his approval to David Draiman. Someone said that the original “Sound of Silence” was a plea to the world, a warning, and this version is the anger that the warning was ignored, which I think says it all.

I read a comment before that Simon & Garfunkel first put the tune out as a warning, and the Disturbed version expresses anger that the warning went unheeded. I think that's a brilliant synopsis. I grew up in the glorious age of that great 60's & 70's music, and I still find it hugely emotional...this is no exception! I'm a 71 year old bagpiper, and my son challenged me to play this on pipes. I've spent the last week listening intently and transcribing it by ear to fit the limited note range of the Great Highland Bagpipes. It's the most challenging transcription I've tried, and after 5 solid days, I've got the first 4 verses down pretty pat. I should finish the tune this weekend and start editing & tweaking for my final write. This is a fun project, and I'm looking forward to finally taking it from the practice chanter to pipes.
Bravo to David for a masterful rendition to this timeless tune!

I was a fan of the original song for many years before this cover was even made, and I ALSO was a big fan of Disturbed for many years before this cover was made. I never anticipated one of my favorite bands covering one of my favorite songs. I still remember the first time I heard it, it was actually on the radio. I was in the car with my wife and her sister, and I just could not speak during the whole thing and it nearly brought me to tears. This cover is absolutely fantastic. I'm not here to say whether this one is "better" than the original. I love the original, and I love this cover. They are both fantastic.

You can see in your face the change from when you were listening to the song and then when you were actually hearing it. This song does that to me every time.

Absolutely gets me every time I listen to this. Such a powerfully trained voice and the best rendition of this old song I’ve ever heard.

Draiman is otherworldly. He gives a performance for the ages. And the instrumental skill and orchestration absolutely reaches the greatness of his voice. It's an incredible total performance on every level.

This song drew some emotion from you when he let loose with the power of his voice. You started breathing a little deeper and your eyes watered. I've watched this video several times and it still gets me.

The shivers the goosebumps the emotion it’s just breathtaking and coupled with watching your reactions and your facial expression your emotions showing through on your face was beautiful. So glad you enjoyed and appreciate this talent as much as I do.

David Draiman is untouchable in regard to the delivery of this song. The entire arrangement is very powerful.

I had never heard of Disturbed when I listened to this cover. Because it was incredible, I chose another Disturbed song and was shocked when it was metal. I listened to the song "Down With the Sickness" a few times and went on from there and now I like Metal. I really think this particular song which shows off David's voice better than most of the metal songs.

That's always an amusing reaction. My mother, who is 74 years old, really enjoyed this. She didn't believe me when I told her Disturbed was chiefly a metal band... so I played her Down With the Sickness... her facial expressions were priceless! Lol

Ohhhh my. Terry Allen! The rabbit hole you could be going down, lol. If you were interested, there are soooo very many artists out there just waiting out there for someone like you to discover, and I'm sure there are more than enough people here willing to lend a hand with several of their favorite artists in this genre. That is, if you were interested :)

Check out Slipknot - Snuff, and then compare that to Duality or Wait and Bleed. and then you can move on to Corey Taylor's other band Stone Sour - Through Glass and Bother, then Gone Sovereign/Absolute Zero. From there check out Five Finger Death Punch - Wrong Side of Heaven and I Apologize and Coming Down. My point in suggesting these songs is showing the versatility of metal bands and how they can go from powerful songs with a message to 'screaming'.

Disturbed is a great band to get yourself into the metal scene. If you want to take another step, listen to some Killswitch Engage. I'm not a big fan of the real heavy stuff. Avenged Sevenfold is hit or miss with some people. I personally love them, but they get some hate.

David's voice is truly one of the most beautiful sounds ever put in music. The way he can make so many layers and "colors" to his tones is simply amazing. When he uses his head voice on the high parts and then effortlessly layers in gravel and raspy tone is something that I wish I could do. It almost even sounds like there are hints of throat singing in some of the parts. Quite simply his is one of the most unique voices out there and that, in turn, makes this one of the greatest covers ever. Rock on.

I scrolled through a bunch of the top comments here ( I might have missed it though) and didn't notice anyone stating that David was really sick during this performance and yet he still performed perfectly. He got very upset that the Conan tech team had put some minor correction on his voice live because David basically refuses to use correction when performing. He's that confident and proud of his skills that he doesn't need correction at all. They sound just like this live as I've seen them perform this song live too!

I LOVE this cover, but his video blows me away with the goosebumps and tears every time. The video interpretation of the song matches his amazing performance. I also LOVE how the expressions on his face add to the level of feeling he expresses. It was a masterful.

This version gives be chills. I have rarely heard a voice or arrangement that affects me so strongly. His voice moves effortlessly gaining power, raspy growl until he is singing in an almost shout but still so controlled and beautiful. One of the most incredible performances. I have never much liked metal music but this man has the most gorgeous voice.
