    I’m 54. I was a moderate Soundgarden fan. Yet the only time I can remember actually crying in my life was the day I heard Chris had been found dead. Something about it really shook me. It was so sad, because he was such a respected and appreciated guy. XM Radio was playing his music all afternoon as a tribute. I just sat in my car at the back of a parking lot and listened and cried for 3 hours.

    Chris Cornell had a near Four Octave Vocal Range. I loved him from, Temple of the Dog, Sound Garden, AudioSlave and all of his solo recordings. I live with Depression and a lot of other physical problems (Being Run Over by a Truck at the age of Three tends to do that to one’s self) but his music has been there to help me pull myself back around from the darkest corners. Whether it’s just listening or playing a few songs on my guitar, it all helps.
    I know that sounds cheesy.

    • @reactivereplays5666
      @reactivereplays5666 8 месяцев назад +7

    • @LuiWallentinGttler
      @LuiWallentinGttler 8 месяцев назад +7

      No cheese to be found ;-). Whatever that helps in pushing the bad shit to the background, and not harming others or you even more, is just good. I also have both mental and physical challenges and for sure music has also kept me above ground many times. And if Chris could and can help you do the same that's just so so great.

    • @Nick17354
      @Nick17354 8 месяцев назад +3

      I know exactly what you mean, and it isn't cheesy at all. I went through some incredibly rough times in my late teens and early twenties, and for two decades was able to escape all that with Chris's songs. He sang sad music, but it spoke to us, showed us we weren't alone. I look back at a couple times where I was particularly desperate, and, what I ultimately decided not to do, and his music was there. A new video would pop up occasionally of a new cover he did, or when Soundgarden got back together. Deep down it still hurts that he's just gone now. Especially with how he left, that hurts the most I think.
      Sounds silly to write this, you'd think I was talking about a close family member, not a celebrity. I never would have guessed that a celebrity death would hit me as hard as his did. I recommend checking out his daughters, Lily Cornell-Silver, and Toni Cornell. They both got his gifted voice. Lily recently performed Alice in Chains "Black Gives Way to Blue" at MoPOP, and it's a beautiful cover, especially with Susan's intro. I hope they both continue to release music!

    This will be buried, and I love the love. You're analyzing genius. It's not quantifiable. It's not something you can dissect. It just is. This is a performer at the top of his game. I'm so glad it was captured.

    I listen to a lot of his live acoustic performances and they are absolutely mesmerizing. It pains me that he is no longer with us but thankful for so many of these videos being available to help Chris’ fans feel like he is still sharing his gift out there on the road.

    In January 2019 there was a Chris Cornell Tribute concert... Chris Stapleton played "The Keeper", so you might not be far off. I'm not sure he's ever commented on it directly though.

    It's amazing how Cornell evolved as a singer/musician over the decades. I remember seeing him live for the 1st time in 1987 with Soundgarden. They opened for Faith No More at a small club. He was just a young long haired dude that turned into a legend.

    The one thing I found amazing about Chris was... his early work he had a great voice. Such a smooth tone. Then, the more he went on, he got better. It's hard to believe that he could actually sing better! It's a shame that we lost him. I guess when you burn super bright, you burn out faster. RIP, Chris. You are missed by the masses.

    Two words: Jeff Buckley. Don't know if you're familar with Jeff, but you are going to be BLOWN AWAY by his vocals. Everyone and their grandmother has covered "Hallelujah" but his version is the one everyone tries to surpass but never will (even Leonard Cohen said so). "So Real" is also amazing, "Grace" and "Last Goodbye" among others. Buckley and Cornell, easily the two best singers of the 90's. Please do yourself a favour, check him out.

    I've always said that Chris Stapleton is the Chris Cornell of Country. To me they don't sound alike but both have such unbelievable control and compression of this unique raw, soulful tone that just grabs onto your earholes. Growly and abrasive but still full, smooth and buttery. Truely fantastic voices. 2 of my favorite artists for sure.

    Amazing singer, but such a tragic end to one of the best singers I have ever heard. I like most of the covers he did. Try "Billie Jean", the song made famous by Michael Jackson. He did a whole album of covers, from the Beatles, Whitney Houston to Bob Marley, Pearl Jam, even Metallica. Some might not be what you would expect, but his voice rings true. Definitely a tragic loss to the world.
    Thanks for your reaction, I could tell you liked it, you started swaying along. I teared up. The words mean so much when you can feel the emotion being sung directly from the soul.
    I am glad you mentioned Chris Stapleton. He is pure magic when he sings. More of Chris Stapleton as well!

    His version of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean is great. Also his version of The Beatles "A Day in the Life", His version of Led Zeppelin's "Thank You" , his version of John Lennon's "Imagine" and his version of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song". Oh and he does a mashup of a song, using the music of U2's song "One" and the lyrics of Metallica's song "One", which is flawless.

    Hi Bethany, really enjoying your analyses. I’m hoping you can do an analysis of Jeff Buckley. Jeff was one of the best voices of the 90s and a contemporary and friend of Chris Cornell, though not in the grunge genre. I would recommend “Dream Brother” (Live in Chicago) as this really showcases his vocal ability. You won’t be disappointed! I promise!
