The story behind Eddie’s appearance on this is CRAZY. What you are hearing is Eddie’s first appearance on an album. He had just got into town from San Diego to form what would become Pearl Jam. 3 of the guys from what would be Pearl Jam were in the studio recording this tribute album to their friend Andrew Wood with Chris and Matt from Soundgarden. Eddie did not really know any of these guys. They had just met that day. Eddie heard Chris cutting his vocal track and Eddie asked if he could give a verse a try. The rest is history. In addition to just knowing each other, Chris Cornell and Andrew Wood were roommates and besties. "I don’t know if you can ever take him out of [my heart and soul]" Cornell mused about Wood. "There was a period of time when he would sit in his bedroom across the hall from mine and we would kind of have these dueling four-track demos and songs. He wasn’t doing it for Malfunkshun and me doing it for Soundgarden; it had nothing to do with that. It was us just having fun. Maybe you can look at it as songwriting exercises? We were always kind of neck and neck. We were very different from each other in terms of our approach. He was very free and didn’t necessarily have a critical voice while he was in the process of writing a song. He would just do anything. I on the other hand," admitted Cornell, "not only do I have a critical voice, I have sort of an editorial staff and what that creates is something kind of completely different." "He would do these amazing free things that felt so - almost to the degree of just being dangerous in a way -because it was so free and un-self-conscious," Cornell reminisced. "I would think 'How do you do that?' We would always observe each other. That’s sort of like what I would equate to early college years, that doesn’t go away. Those experiences never stop being a part of who you are and how you think."
I’ve got a cool story about Eddie Vedder. First I worked for an insurance company back in the day in the special lines field and remember actually speaking to Eddie about his boat policy! He said enjoyed calling instead of his agent! Very down to Earth and later we were able to meet at a Seattle Pearl Jam show so he was able to put a face to the voice on the phone 📱. I saw Soundgarden back with their Louder than Love tour. Chris is such a powerful singer you could hear him above the PA system. He could blow your hair back.
I remember smiling uncontrollably when he had moments of letting rip & going straight at you instead of thru the PA thru his one-man-and-his-acoustic solo shows. Granted I was only a few rows back, but good grief, could that man shift air when he felt like it. No wonder he blew out 4 or 5 expensive Neumann microphones while recording "Superunknown"!! :)

I remember waiting for the video to come around, as there was no internet or youtube back then. Every time the video replayed I felt lucky and grateful to hear it once more.
Cornell wrote the whole album. He doesn’t get enough credit as an elite songwriter. Amazing lyricist, guitarist, (and he was originally the drummer in Soundgarden). Just a musical phenom
What's amazing is how fulfilling this song is lyrically, and then you stop and realize it literally has one verse and one chorus, repeated in a mantra fashion. Evidence that it's not always how many words you have to say, but the feeling and power behind how you say (sing) it.
The story behind this song/ album is so touching. There's a doc about it, about Andy Wood, i saw when looking for interview footage of Chris after he died. It's a really beautiful doc, sad story, and was the perfect thing i was searching for. I've watched it a few times cause it's such a testament of love. I didnt appreciate Chris enough while he was alive and i regret that. I liked his music but i didn't give him the proper attention or respect and acknowledgement till after. He was really amazing and his music lives on RIP Chris Cornell
You need to hear Mad Season, a side project that was comprised of members of the Seattle grunge scene at the time, including Layne Staley (Alice In Chains) and Mike McCready (Pearl Jam). It's some of Layne's best work ('Wake Up' is especially poignant). Even the instrumental 'November Hotel' will blow your mind.
I am still floored by all the collabs that happened in this era. I was in middle school / freshman in high school when this album dropped. Thinking back on it just... still hard to grasp every thing that was happening in music from this area ;)
I hear what you're saying about Chris and Eddie not overpowering the other and stealing the glory . They're equally as impressive, and I've always thought that. I think they would probably agree since TOTD was a collaborative project meant to honor their friend Andrew Wood. It was never about competing. I think they both sang as if Andrew were watching them.😎❤️
I still tear up hearing and seeing Chris. He was phenomenal and his personality matched his talent. Eddie, my man crush, kills everything he touches. Check out He and Tom Petty doing "The Waiting" live. Even Petty is in awe of Eddie singing his song. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
For me, I'm in my fifties now, this is still one of the best albums ever. Especially this song. The combination of their voices. As others have commented, it was a small scene. But you can only accomplish an album like this when there is mutual respect, kindred spirits or whatever (or am I too romantic?)
I have been a fan for 30 years and both of them still make me smile when they surprise me with their vocals. They have 2 of the most beautiful voices I will ever hear.
You can make a career analyzing Chris Cornell’s range. Here’s a few I love: Thank You Say Hello to Heaven Getaway Car One Sunshower As Hope and Promise Fade (acoustic live version)
Chris Cornell’s harmony in the 2nd pre-chorus is (chef’s kiss), and I’ll always love his ability to make those high notes/screams look effortless. He just had *it*. Amazing timbre, technique and use of dynamics.
Must be so amazing yet overwhelming to listen to all these awesome 90s Grunge songs for the first time while most of us have listened to them for uncountable times! They are still as powerful over 30 years later🔥
Excellent take on the track. Perhaps one of the best I have seen/heard. Your observation skills are deep and your articulation of those observations are so satisfying - - - I watched it twice - - - I never do that. Instead of being frustrated at what the reviewer / reactor _missed_ in their respective takes, I simply repeated, "Yes!" throughout your video. Well done, Ma'am. Subscribing.
Love the story of the recording of this song. This was the beginning of a brotherhood between the two. Eddie just joined Pearl Jam and was at this session and heard Chris trying to sing both high and low parts of the chorus. He was having a tough time trying to incorporate both parts, but Eddie, as a great vocalist, heard what he was trying to do and understood Chris' thinking. He ended up hopping on the mic, belted out the low part, and the rest is history. We were left with this gem of a song, and a long-lasting friendship began. Rest easy, Chris.
Lol I can understand Chris. The guy looked like a model. Even if he didn't have the voice or stardom and he was just walking down the street girls would have been swooning
I'm no music producer but I was a Radio Deejay for 23 years and listened to tons of songs. I may be wrong but they lowered the fader for Chris Cornell's vocal..if not Eddie's vocals would be buried by Chris' power
keep in mind Eddie and Chris had never met before this was recorded. He was there to try out for Pearl Jam and Chris invited him to be a part of this album recording. They never sang together before this, which makes this album even more amazing. This album came out of the death of Mother Love Bone Singer Andy Wood so there is so much raw emotion everywhere on this album.
No. No. NO!! He IS my favorite, BUT!!! You cannot say "LEAGUES" with Layne Staley!! You can with the rest of them. (though I'm a HUGE fan of Kurt Cobain and Scott Weiland's voices as well)
Definitely a perfect balance of both their voices. I don't know how much I played this song when it came out, but you could be fairly certain if I was driving for more than an hour this would be on at least 3 times during that trip for the first month.
This whole album is worth a reaction. I LOVE LOVE LOVE watching your eyes when vocals are really touching you. They just sparkle and it's wonderful to see.
As others mentioned, this was a dedication to a lost friend, Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone. Now, you should take a listen to Andrew Wood by reacting to 'Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns'. Great analysis!
Saw Chris with Soundgarden on LOLLAPOLOOZA 92 which overall was better than 93 and 94 minus Alice In Chains (93). Included Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ministry, Ice Cube, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Pearl Jam, Lush, Rage Against The Machine, Cypress Hill, House of Pain, Stone Temple Pilots, Temple of the Dog. Chris blew everyone away with those amazing vocals into the stratosphere! Love and miss the sound of that man’s voice! I find myself crying at the beginning of Hunger Strike. RIP CHRIS!
From my understanding Eddie was in town auditioning for Mookie Blaylock which would become pearl jam. He was hanging out while the band was practicing. Chris was trying to sing both parts an just was not getting what he heard in his head. the next run thru Eddie just stepped up to the mike gave Chris a look and sang the lower part. they knew it was something right away. This was Eddie Vedder's first appearance on a studio album.
The doco PJ20 talks about this. Apparently , this was Eddies first professional studio recording. There are a couple of RUclips videos of Soundgarden live where Eddie will jump on Matt Cameron’s mic.(Outshined). Chris had teamed up with the members of Mother Love Bone (after being a flat mate with the recently deceased Andy Wood) and Motherlove bone were auditioning singers. I’m glad that Chris gave Eddy this opportunity and both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam evolved to give us the 90’s we love
I was in college radio during the beginning of the grunge music era, and this song and Say Hello to Heaven were staples with early stuff by Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, etc… great time to be in radio…
You are growing in a great direction. As a Seattle musician for 30+ years we have have all felt this for a very long time. Thanks for your projection and break down and it is thrilling to see your reaction. FYI this video was basically filmed on my (Seattle "Our") backyard at Discovery Park, so it sits well at "home".
Watching you makes me smile and I love how joyful you are listening to Chris and Eddie together for the first time. But I am also profoundly sad that none of us will experience this feeling again with another song. I wish Chris could stay with us a little longer.
From this album: Say Hello 2 Heaven. A must-have! A remarkable vocal display, a performance that shows off the amazing range of Chris' voice. I've heard this song thousands of times and seemingly always know what to expect.... but still, every time I listen to it, I'm very impressed and amazed how good Chris was.
I LOVE EDDIE, AS SOON AS PEOPLE HEAR CHRIS EDDIE IS OVERLOOKED EVEN THOUGH HE IS INCREDIBLE SINGING HIS PART. Just discovered this channel and I'm now binging. Love you analysis and your obvious passion for singing and vocal technique. I first heard Eddie Vedder live in a Tower Records promotional set in my hometown. Then a month later at Lalapalooza. Both times, despite the different venue sizes and acoustics, he just reached into my soul and totally captivated. So dynamic, raw and emotional. Love listening to him and PJ.
WOW! Normally I don't mind fishing off the bank but sometimes I feel like I missed the boat but thank the OMNIPOTENT for you!! I've overheard the song now and then but never enough to even know who it was. Chris sure looks way different from the Nothing Compares To You vid. Well another album I must explore and looks like great ideas from your fans!! Great Channel Bethany! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
Their only album, which was released in 1991, had critical acclaim but very little sales on its initial release. Then, a year later, after both Pearl Jam (of which had former Temple members Mike McCready, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard) and Soundgarden (Chris Cornell) had success separately with the respective albums Ten and Badmotorfinger, A&M Records capitalized on these successes by re-releasing Temple of the Dog's album and issuing "Hunger Strike" as a single, which finally propelled millions of devoted fans to buy the album.
I'm a huge fan of both Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder. When this song came out it was still somewhat early in both of their careers. To me it sounds like two alpha male wolves with their packs calling to each other in the wild and beckoning each other to join forces and create something greater than the music world had ever heard before. Incredible collaboration!
The vocals in the entire album are great (obviously) but I particularly love this song, and the ending parts of both Say Hello To Heaven and Four-Walled World.
Now that you've heard Alice in Chains and Eddie and Chris together a fun exercise would be to listen to "Right Turn" on Alice in Chains SAP album. Chris, Layne and Jerry all take turns singing in this short but sweet song and it really shows off the complexities of each of their voices. Fun to see if you can pick them out. Enjoy.
I remember my oldest brother and his buddy Jason listening to this on repeat…And I’d sit outside the room wishing they’d let me come in… 😆 Man, two greats and the beautiful music they made… They just don’t have this Spirit nowadays… RIP, Chris - We Know ~ 🙏🏻⬆️🇺🇸
Interesting story about how this song came together. Temple of the Dog is the rhythm section of Pearl Jam, formerly Mother Love Bone, whose singer had passed away. During the recording of this album, the remaining MLB members were auditioning singers for what would become Pearl Jam. Eddie Veder flew up to Seattle for his audition during the recording of this song. Chris's throat was sore and he told Eddie to take a crack at it. Eddie laid down his track and Chris said: "Eddie sang it exactly how I wanted it to sound".
Rest in Power Mr. Cornell. No one sings like you anymore.
Protect Mr. Vedder, he is the last one.
Amen to that. The world's heartbeat will stop when Eddie passes a very looooong time from now.

Cornell wrote the whole album. He doesn’t get enough credit as an elite songwriter. Amazing lyricist, guitarist, (and he was originally the drummer in Soundgarden). Just a musical phenom
True, he is one the greatest songwriters in rock, no doubt about it.
Melodic genius. No doubt.
Two of the best voices in music let alone rock
He was really amazing and his music lives on
RIP Chris Cornell
You need to hear Mad Season, a side project that was comprised of members of the Seattle grunge scene at the time, including Layne Staley (Alice In Chains) and Mike McCready (Pearl Jam). It's some of Layne's best work ('Wake Up' is especially poignant). Even the instrumental 'November Hotel' will blow your mind.
And Mark Lanegan on a couple of songs. I personally feel he’s the most underrated (or maybe under appreciated?) of the Seattle singers.
Yes!
I think they both sang as if Andrew were watching them.😎❤️
Exatamente!
chris cornell could read off stereo instructions and i'd listen to the end. his voice, what can i say? i love every time he sings-it's magical.
Thank You for praising Eddie, he is incredible!! So is Stone, Jeff, Mike and Matt.😊🩷🤘✌️
I still tear up hearing and seeing Chris. He was phenomenal and his personality matched his talent. Eddie, my man crush, kills everything he touches. Check out He and Tom Petty doing "The Waiting" live. Even Petty is in awe of Eddie singing his song. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Oh yes! The Waiting is on of my favorite Tom Petty songs and the two of them are amazing!
Here’s a few I love:
Thank You
Say Hello to Heaven
Getaway Car
One
Sunshower
As Hope and Promise Fade (acoustic live version)
Chris Cornell’s harmony in the 2nd pre-chorus is (chef’s kiss), and I’ll always love his ability to make those high notes/screams look effortless. He just had *it*. Amazing timbre, technique and use of dynamics.
A special time and place in music history. All of the right ingredients coming together at the same time to create an epic voice for a generation.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
RIP Chris, RIP Andy..
Must be so amazing yet overwhelming to listen to all these awesome 90s Grunge songs for the first time while most of us have listened to them for uncountable times! They are still as powerful over 30 years later🔥
You should check out Andrew wood from mother love bone, this album was dedicated to him when he passed away.
This is so beautiful, makes me cry. Great analysis ❤
They don’t make it like this anymore… Definitely feel the emotion of the song & time… When America was kinder, gentler, and better ~ 🙏🏻⬆️🇺🇸
"Reach Down" from this has some of the craziest (in a good way) vocals I've ever heard.
i loved bethany's facial expression when Chris went even higher
Yes same!! And I ❤ how she ❤’s Chris now after finding him so recently.
It’s a funeral song. That’s why egos don’t step on each other. They are singing for their fallen brother. GYST
I have said it before when you reacted to Chris. What a loss this man was. To hear Chris and Eddie here and you reacting to them is a joy. Thank you.
Only artist I actually cried when hearing of his death! Chris was incredible!
I thought that was a great comment when you said they were both holding their own. Perfect description.
Chris Cornell such a great voice gone to soon RIP
Love the story of the recording of this song. This was the beginning of a brotherhood between the two.
Eddie just joined Pearl Jam and was at this session and heard Chris trying to sing both high and low parts of the chorus. He was having a tough time trying to incorporate both parts, but Eddie, as a great vocalist, heard what he was trying to do and understood Chris' thinking. He ended up hopping on the mic, belted out the low part, and the rest is history.
We were left with this gem of a song, and a long-lasting friendship began. Rest easy, Chris.
Sent shivers down my spine when i first heard it all those years ago......Still does now,...amazing performance by an amazing group of musicians.
I think the Vocalist is crushing on Eddie and Chris 😂
It’s a gen x long hair thing 😍
Lol I can understand Chris. The guy looked like a model. Even if he didn't have the voice or stardom and he was just walking down the street girls would have been swooning
I think I am also.
I'm no music producer but I was a Radio Deejay for 23 years and listened to tons of songs. I may be wrong but they lowered the fader for Chris Cornell's vocal..if not Eddie's vocals would be buried by Chris' power
Two beautiful men with beautiful voices.
keep in mind Eddie and Chris had never met before this was recorded. He was there to try out for Pearl Jam and Chris invited him to be a part of this album recording. They never sang together before this, which makes this album even more amazing. This album came out of the death of Mother Love Bone Singer Andy Wood so there is so much raw emotion everywhere on this album.
eddie vedder is on another level, he has the mana when he comes in this makes the song
Got this album 30 years ago. Never gets old.
Chris's vocals are leagues above anyone else in the grunge era. Absolute legend.
No. No. NO!! He IS my favorite, BUT!!! You cannot say "LEAGUES" with Layne Staley!! You can with the rest of them. (though I'm a HUGE fan of Kurt Cobain and Scott Weiland's voices as well)
Not true. Eddie Vedder can tear your heart out as amazingly as any vocalist in rock history. Don't confuse range with being better.
RIP Chris
Definitely a perfect balance of both their voices. I don't know how much I played this song when it came out, but you could be fairly certain if I was driving for more than an hour this would be on at least 3 times during that trip for the first month.
Imo Chris has the greatest singing voice of all time
This whole album is worth a reaction.
RIP CHRIS!
I was there too! Great show and day!
I saw them on the 96 tour in Rockingham, NC. It was one of Soundgardens last shows. It was something to behold.
I was at thar show as well. Blew my mind!
One of my favorite albums from my 2 favorite bands. This was the very first CD I bought back in the day when it came out.
I have been fans of EV and CC for decades now. Watching you discover them brings such joy but also recall the saddness 😢.
One of the few "super-groups" i actually wished i could've listened more from.
Pearl Jam hadn't even really gotten started at this point either and Eddie was already THE MAN!
oh wow, I didn't realize this was pre-Pearl Jam
Two of the most powerful voices of the 90s grunge era
From my understanding Eddie was in town auditioning for Mookie Blaylock which would become pearl jam. He was hanging out while the band was practicing. Chris was trying to sing both parts an just was not getting what he heard in his head. the next run thru Eddie just stepped up to the mike gave Chris a look and sang the lower part. they knew it was something right away. This was Eddie Vedder's first appearance on a studio album.
Cool story behind this. I really had no idea when this came out in the time line. Cheers.
Yes, it was fall of 1990. They would jam (😉) as Mookie Blaylock during the day and record Temple overnight.
Mookie Blaylock was already a band, but yes. Temple of the Dog is a tribute album to Andrew Wood, the lead singer of Mother Love Bone ❤️🔥
Wow historic and amazing
The doco PJ20 talks about this. Apparently , this was Eddies first professional studio recording. There are a couple of RUclips videos of Soundgarden live where Eddie will jump on Matt Cameron’s mic.(Outshined). Chris had teamed up with the members of Mother Love Bone (after being a flat mate with the recently deceased Andy Wood) and Motherlove bone were auditioning singers. I’m glad that Chris gave Eddy this opportunity and both Soundgarden and Pearl Jam evolved to give us the 90’s we love
Two great voices of a generation 👍
The finest collaboration of the era/genre. No question. rip Chris xxx
One of the greatest opening lines ever! RIP CC 😥
" Oh Golly"
Yes, exactly. Its that good!
This was the first Eddie Vedder appearance in a record.
I LOVE EDDIE, AS SOON AS PEOPLE HEAR CHRIS EDDIE IS OVERLOOKED EVEN THOUGH HE IS INCREDIBLE SINGING HIS PART. LOOK AT THE COMMENTS MOST DON'T EVEN MENTIONED EDDIE OR THE REST OF THE BAND, IT REALLY SUCKS!! I LOVE CHRIS CORNELL RIP 😇💔 CHRIS INVITED EDDIE TO SING ON THIS TRACK, EDDIE FIRST TIME HE IS RECORDED ON A ALBUM. NO ONE IS STEALING THE SHOW, IT'S A DUET. THANK YOU!! EDDIE IS STILL ALIVE!! THANK YOU BETH YOU WERE VERY FAIR. 😊🩷🤘✌️
80's and 90's Metal, Rock and Grunge is unbeatable. It will never be duplicated.
“Oh golly!” Tears in my eyes laughing at that.
Great video!!!, you should listen to 20 years later, at the Pearl jam concert 20
Enjoy.
Its so refreshing to see your appreciation for this, rip chris
Chris Cornell's part in this song is amazing! 😢
Those two could have been the best vocal duo EVER if...if ... if. RIP CC
I remember my oldest brother and his buddy Jason listening to this on repeat…And I’d sit outside the room wishing they’d let me come in… 😆 Man, two greats and the beautiful music they made… They just don’t have this Spirit nowadays… RIP, Chris - We Know ~ 🙏🏻⬆️🇺🇸
Best song of the grunge era. Two greats backed by an incredible group of musicians.
Quintessential early 90s.
From two of the biggest fan of that time. And deservedly so
Interesting story about how this song came together.
Eddie's riffing down the scale low range near the end while Chris is in high range mode brings a tear to my eye
