Chris Cornell is one of those once-in-a-generation voices. And it wasn't just his voice. His lyrics were world class, always. I forgot if it was freshman or sophomore year in high school I got Superunknown but in the 25-ish years since, it's an album I'll still play at least a few tracks from every few weeks. To your question about other work with Vedder, they did a whole album together as a group called Temple of the Dog with 10 glorious tracks. The other one I always think of is "Say Hello To Heaven". For other tracks, I'm a bit partial to Soundgarden's Superunknown album as I mentioned before. It is filled with gems. "Black Hole Sun" was the big radio hit, definitely a good show of their skill. "Fell on Black Days" was another fairly popular single that really shows his lyrical ability, too, and how he could just wallow in despair. However, "The Mailman" is one I like a little better... a little less radio friendly due to a darker theme but just so ominous and angry. "The Day I tried To Live" as well. There are two other tracks on it that really show other sides Soundgarden: "4th of July" with religious/armageddon kinds of theme and a gritty downtempo metal groove driving it and the criminally underrate "Like Suicide" that closes the album... IMHO one of the greatest hard rock songs ever recorded, showing how tempo and thrashing isn't necessary for a dark, hard sound. And with haunting lyrics about a bizarre inspiration (woke up to the sound of a bluebird that had crashed into a window, found it on he patio with a broken neck, did the humane thing with the only handy instrument, an old brick, and mused on the thoughts as it unfolded "Bit down on the bullet now / I had a taste so sour / I had to think of something sweet / Love's like suicide / Safe outside my gilded cage / With an ounce of pain / I wield a ton of rage / Just like suicide" He did some really interesting solo accoustic stuff after Soundgarden, probably most notable is his cover of Beat It as a blues/soul lamentation... has to be heard, can't be described. His later work with Audioslave (Cornell in front of Rage Against Machine's band) which all also gave us a full body of excellent work over three albums. Specific tracks I love: Show me how to Live, Exploder, I am The Highway, Like a Stone, The Last Remaining Light, Out of Exile, Be Yourself, Doesn't Remind Me, Wide Awake... and many more.
I'm 51 now. Cried all day long, that day, at work. Like a little child. Watching this video brought tears again... Never knew him in person, although I did meet him once and said "hey and bye" when I worked backstage in a festival where he performed. Didn't have the guts to go shake his hand. Mostly because I think I was afraid I would go and give him a hug or something. I have 2 or 3 best friends. He was one of them.
You absolutely owe it yourself to hear his song "Say Hello 2 Heaven", a tribute to his friend and fellow musician Andy Wood. It's probably the greatest display of his range in single song. ❤️ We lost Chris 4 years ago today 😔
I'm mainly a Pearl Jam fan, and Eddie's voice never fails to enchant me. That's especially true in this song with the sustained low note. But Chris Cornell's voice was so ridiculously amazing, and I love how the two complement each other here.
Yep, I hear Elizabeth say "voices complimenting each other..." in this era of music and immediately think of AiC. She has a whole catalog of music to choose from when it comes to them.
Love hate love live in Seattle is probably Lane Staley’s most powerful performance, but down in a hole is smooth! His work in mad season is really great too! River of decent , or Wake up is worthy of a review
Temple of the Dog was a side project for a group of friends and musicians from Seattle after Andy Wood died. Andy was the singer of Mother Love Bone and Chris Cornell’s friend and roommate. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament (guitar, bass respectively) were members of MLB, then did the Temple of the Dog project with Chris, as well as Mike McCready (guitar). It was around this time they found Eddie Vedder and began forming Pearl Jam, which could be considered the successor to Mother Love Bone in some ways, though they are different bands obviously. Chris then continued on with Soundgarden, his primary project, and Pearl Jam became what it became. Chris’ solo work is also incredible. My personal favorite of the Seattle singers. Seattle just had something really amazing going on in the late 80s into the 90s. Feels odd to write this out because it’s widely known info for my generation, we grew up with this stuff. But I guess not everyone did. Listen to Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns (Mother Love Bone) sometime. And the entire Singles soundtrack for that matter.
I do hope that one day she will do a Mother Love Bone song. With her love of the music as well as the stories behind the songs/artists, I think she’d appreciate that MLB was basically proto-PearlJam with a different lead vocalist. And talk about two completely different singers. Andy and Eddie are both one-of-kind-vocalists. Just on opposite ends of the spectrum. Definitely agree a great choice would be Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns (last track on the MLB album). Maybe a comparison of Andy and Eddie both singing the same song. That would be cool. -side note: Only time I’ve ever cried when a famous person died was the night we lost Chris. I am definitely a fan, but not necessarily a Stan so I didn’t expect to start sobbing. Losing such a gifted artist affected me so much more than I ever expected. RIP Chris and RIP Andy. ❤️
Never forget the first time i heard that song, it was the first time I consciously remembering hearing Cornell. It was at the cinema watching Collateral, hit me like a ton of bricks
OMG the use of that song in that film was great. I knew the song well before seeing the film and when it hit, a wave of shiver went over me. I've only seen that film once and the song begins just as there's a stray dog or coyote walking on the street right? That song locked that visual in my memory.
@@JoshLing its a great scene, I remember it taking me ages to find the song (pre youtube etc). Needless to say it opened a never ending keg of Cornell treasures
I'm late to this, but Chris Cornell is by far my favorite male vocalist of all time. The subtlety at one moment and then the power thats there is just so raw. I enjoy plenty of singers, I can feel the music in my bones. But with Chris, I feel that voice in my soul. The guy was a god among mortals... RIP Chris.
I've never heard a live version of Say Hello to Heaven that equals or really comes close to what was put down on the record. Aside from the ridiculous high notes at the end, how can you match the emotion of what was happening there at the studio when it was recorded, with Andrew's death so fresh in all their minds. Soundgarden however there are some great live versions of songs like Jesus Christ Pose, Beyond the Wheel and Slaves and Bulldozers that really showcase his voice, when he was at his best and in a live setting.
@@khellendross3573 I love this performance ruclips.net/video/SXOzGY46In0/видео.html maybe you heard it before and still feel the same about the studio version, but I really enjoy seeing him live putting those notes out.
I honestly get emotional hearing songs like this and others that are from my up bringing. I miss the way the world was much more simple back then. Music was worth so much more on a real life level.
Wow, really well said 🙏❤️.. I go through these phases of listening to AIC and Mad Season, then over to Chris and so on. But my goodness what a different time, thinking about concerts now and everyone holding a phone up it's like WTF, I couldn't imagine most óf the shows I've seen holding a phone camera up instead of actually enjoying the music and energy.. Hope things go back à bit, guess we'll find out..
My highschool sweetheart was a huge Pearl Jam fan so I honed my Eddie impression as a teen, mostly to tease her. Once singing the Eddie part of this song my best friend didn’t miss a beat and did the Chris scream. It’s a hilarious memory I have of a teenage life filled with the best music.
@@Neal_RUclips Ultra mega Ok is a great album. I was lucky enough to grow up in Bremerton by Seattle in this time frame. My fav song is Flower but his voice on Beyond is like Plant and Dio on steroids
Even the live version from 2010 under the secret name “Nudedragons” was an insane performance. Chris hadn’t quite had that range and control in a number of years and hearing him hit those notes gave me goose bumps. I think he even knew it at one point - he gives this little smile after screaming, like he’s saying “yeah, I sound this good.”
I have seen him solo, with Soundgarden, and with Audioslave. I only wish I could have seen TOTD!! I think my all time favourite Chris Cornell vocal performance has got to be his solo acoustic song Seasons, from the Singles movie soundtrack.
I've always felt like Eddie was doing sort of a flanneled Gregorian Chant in this song. Haunting, with Chris soaring over the top like an angel with his wings on fire. Never gets old.
You can tell how enchanted she is listening to him. Just soaking in that entire intro. There's just something about the raw emotions and effortless way he caries a melody that captivates. I miss you Chris.
I can't get enough of this song, and I love your analysis! The way Chris and Eddie's voices work together-- it's like singing with a sibling. There's just something about it, you get all these crazy overtones and resonance. I'm so upset I was a baby still when these guys were making the majority of their music, oh to have grown up with grunge and alt rock at such a high! I cried when Chris died, even moreso seeing the effect it had on his loved ones. If you ever get a chance, watch the version of "Black" that Eddie did after his death, it's absolutely heartbreaking. At the end he just keeps repeating "Come back, come back"... I can barely stand to listen, it's so raw.
Temple of the dog - Say hello to heaven is a must to listen to! Chris dedicated that song to his friend Andrew Wood who died of an overdose and it's a masterpiece in songwriting! Those lyrics physically hurt when you hear them...
I can attest to the fact of how glorious it was to hear them sing this together live. I was at the 2nd Lollapalooza tour in irvine in 1992 when soundgarden & pearl jam had their sets back to back. The 1st band stayed on stage after their set was over, the 2nd band joined them & they played several temple of the dog songs, then the 1st band exited so the 2nd band could start their set. It was 1 of only a handful of live performances with both cornell, Vedder & the complete cast of band members. It was amazing!
My best friends brother took us to one of these as a kid and we got to see this also. I had no clue that this was such a special moment until years later. I just remember being in such awe of the beauty we heard
Grunge singers have some of the most incredible voices. Chris, Eddie and Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) all did some amazing things with the vocals in their music.
A shame so many have passed away Kurt, Layne, Scott Weiland, Chris Cornell, Bradley Nowell, I probably am forgetting some, no disrespect. They all crashed and burned.... if only they stuck to weed, and passed up the rest of the shit, they may still be with us
@@myracarlile927 To be fair, that's partly because Eddie popped in for the low parts. Chris was apparently struggling with the lower end of his range that day and Eddie had been invited up by Chris to sing on the album, he got his shot to try the song and the rest is history.
It would be fun to see the Charismatic Voice team up with Rick Beato to analyze songs. She could examine the voices and Rick could break down other elements such as the instrumentals and chord progressions. That would be match made in heaven!
One of my favorites! Chris Cornell is one of the absolute greatest vocalists of all time! 💔 I tear up every time I hear him now! 😢 Such an amazing man!
This is a perfect choice for songs to get introduced to Chris Cornell through. One of my all-time favorite rock singers at one of his best performances.
You are sorely sorely missed Chris. Some voids can never be filled, but your immortalization will live on eternally. Thank you for all that you gave. Rest in Peace.
Just being able to see someone enjoy Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder for the first time is just magical to me. I wish I would have appreciated it more when I had the chance. Of course, I took it for granted, and now it's gone
Please do more Chris. Love the way you broke down his voice. Want you to experience the full scope of his talent. And I enjoy your reactions so much! 🤘🏼
Welp... having made the mistake of picking that song for karaoke one night, that doesn't surprise me at all. Obviously I made a fool of myself when attempting that song.
That´s exactly the first and best song to showcase Chris´ incredible vocal abilities - the range, the power, the control.... Dear Elizabeth, that is the go-to Chris Cornell piece! ;)
I lived in Seattle in the late 80's and early 90's so I seen these bands play at local clubs and can attest that Chris Cornell has one of the best voices in music period...
There's an amazing clip in Pearl Jam Twenty of them performing this live and Chris is hitting those high notes walking around with Eddie slung over his shoulder. If you want more Chris Cornell goodness from this time, his live performance of Say Hello 2 Heaven is amazing. Just pure feeling
Thank you so much for reacting to this song. You are getting closer to my request for Love Hate Love live at the Moore Theater by Alice and Chains! You will not be disappointed!
The entire Temple of the Dog album is a masterclass in singing, released right before Soundgarden's output of Badmotorfinger and later Superunknown - these three albums represent the golden age of Chris Cornell vocals if you ask me.
Soundgarden: 'Blow up the outside world' and Chris Cornell's cover of Prince's 'Nothing compares 2 U', a gut-wrenching but imperative human experience.
This is just high level stuff - the amount of talent combined here is astounding and will never happen again...this is an eternal recording- priceless 🔥
From the soundtrack of the movie "Singles," Chris Cornell's song "Seasons" is an all-time favorite: beautiful showcase for his voice and guitar work. (And an overall great soundtrack!)
I hope you do more Chris Cornell. I'd especially like to see you react to some of his solo performances where it's just him and an acoustic guitar. I feel like in that setting you really get a full appreciation for his incredible talent.
Hearing Chris' first background chorus "I'm going hungry, yeah!" right when she paused instantly gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes...I grew up with this song on MTV and the radio, and sort of took Chris Cornell for granted up until about 15 years ago when I really realized just how special of a vocalist he truly was...it's such a shame the world has to go on without him, but he definitely left an amazing legacy behind...
The first time I heard Temple of the Dog (the whole album was introduced to me before I'd seen a video of any single), Chris became my favorite vocalist, from Hunger Strike, to Pushing Forward Back and especially Say Hello 2 Heaven. His voice touched me and still does. He evoked so much raw emotion.....

This so much. Not even my favorite CC song but this needs to happen! Such a great vocal track.
100% agree! That song is the best display of his range. Amazing song!
Definitely! This is it: ruclips.net/video/SXOzGY46In0/видео.html
YES!!!! This here
The list is endless ......
"Say Hello 2 Heaven" is the best possible example of the range and power by Chris Cornell.
Agreed, I don’t know why reaction channels choose Hunger Strike over Heaven. More popular but not in the same league as far as the song goes
Far better than Huger Strike
Reach Down and Beyond The Wheel
Call me a dog as well
@@caciquesealth6281 I love Reach Down!
I'm mainly a Pearl Jam fan, and Eddie's voice never fails to enchant me. That's especially true in this song with the sustained low note. But Chris Cornell's voice was so ridiculously amazing, and I love how the two complement each other here.
Dying to see a reaction to Alice In Chains “Down in a Hole” from MTV Unplugged. Layne and Jerry’s voices were something special together.
Or nutshell!
@@richardmann4006 yesss! I just commented that lol
Yep, I hear Elizabeth say "voices complimenting each other..." in this era of music and immediately think of AiC. She has a whole catalog of music to choose from when it comes to them.
@@richardmann4006 or Love Hate Love
Love hate love live in Seattle is probably Lane Staley’s most powerful performance, but down in a hole is smooth! His work in mad season is really great too! River of decent , or Wake up is worthy of a review
30 years later and this song still gives me goosebumps when they harmonize together.
One of a kind song,,,,
Temple of the Dog was a side project for a group of friends and musicians from Seattle after Andy Wood died.
I was a little late listening to Mother Love Bone. I have their "Mother Love Bone" album but I'm really hoping that I can find "On Earth as it Is".
Still have the cassette Mother Love Bone
Great MLB recommendation!! That’s always been my favorite.
Candlebox's "You" and "Far Behind" are also based on Andy Wood.
8:10 she got the Eddie chill. His intro following Chris's masterful voice is why this song is my soul
"Seasons" by Chris Cornell off the Singles soundtrack. Pure brilliance.
100% one of his best songs
Ain't gonna lie I love the man of steel video version
Absolutely a gem. Might not give her the high notes she expects, but the richness of his voice really great.
Not just ¨Seasons¨ What about ¨Great expectations¨? That song has awoken tons of feelings and Chris Cornell is just great.
My favorite..haunting song.
His voice became better and better as he got older. RIP Chris.
@Emma James 😥
@Emma James I don't think anybody can sing like him, or Freddie Mercury.
Chris's Shadow of the sun with Audioslave shows a wide range of his capabilities and is truly a masterpiece
“Shadow on the Sun” is one of my favorites
I'm late to this, but Chris Cornell is by far my favorite male vocalist of all time. The subtlety at one moment and then the power thats there is just so raw. I enjoy plenty of singers, I can feel the music in my bones. But with Chris, I feel that voice in my soul. The guy was a god among mortals... RIP Chris.
say hello to heaven the live version takes Chris a minute to warm up but then he nails the rest of it perfectly. rip Chris Cornell🙏
second this request
Now you should probably watch him doing " Nothing compares to you" acoustic in a studio. If you don't cry, you may not be human🙄
oh no not yet, she's not ready yet. She has to witness his evolution.
I second this. You need to hear it The Charismatic Voice!
Im gonna third this idea! You will be thoroughly impressed Elizabeth. Please review the "Live @ SiriusXM version"
Fourth vote here. No one could convey emotion like Chris.
This!!
Always loved his version of “nothing compares to you”
This is the correct answer.
Live of course
YESSSSSSSS
I honestly get emotional hearing songs like this and others that are from my up bringing. I miss the way the world was much more simple back then. Music was worth so much more on a real life level.
Wow, really well said 🙏❤️..
I go through these phases of listening to AIC and Mad Season, then over to Chris and so on. But my goodness what a different time, thinking about concerts now and everyone holding a phone up it's like WTF, I couldn't imagine most óf the shows I've seen holding a phone camera up instead of actually enjoying the music and energy..
Hope things go back à bit, guess we'll find out..
There was far less content for us to get distracted by
Amen. A lot of our musicians from the “grunge” era are all gone. Scott, Layne, Chris, & Kurt.. no flash..just talent.
I've listen to Chris Cornell every single day for years now and wept like a little baby when he passed. I will miss him for the rest of my life.
Chris Cornell was a poet
Goose bumps and tears! Terribly missed.
Shit Chris death hit me hard too.. I don't mourn celebrities, but i did for Chris.. RIP
Beyond the wheel. His voice is so powerful on this song.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Someone knows!!!! Beyond the Wheel is the song that made me go "WTF!? I like Soundgarden"
Beyond The Wheel and When I'm Down are Cornell's finnest
I also really like the version of Rusty Cage he did on the Jool's Holland show.
I have seen him solo, with Soundgarden, and with Audioslave. I only wish I could have seen TOTD!! I think my all time favourite Chris Cornell vocal performance has got to be his solo acoustic song Seasons, from the Singles movie soundtrack.
One of my favorites as well.
Agreed!
OMG - Chris Cornell for the first time! Awesome!!!! Next listen from Chris should be Nothing Compares 2 U (Prince Cover) live in studio. AMAZING!!!!
I've always felt like Eddie was doing sort of a flanneled Gregorian Chant in this song. Haunting, with Chris soaring over the top like an angel with his wings on fire. Never gets old.
I would trade Chris for Eddie, any day

Chris absolutely great! Sometimes I think Eddies great voice doesn’t command quite the respect it should but that’s small potatoes.
Beautifully put.
1st time hearing Chris Cornell? you have one hell of a ride coming your way.
Chris's acoustic cover of Nothing Compares to You gives me shivers. Well worth a reaction.
"Say Hello 2 Heaven" is another fantastic vocal performance from that Temple of the Dog album
Great tune!!
The absolute best
Yes, or Times of Trouble or Call Me a Dog
One of the best vocal duos ever. Cornell can not be over rated as a vocalist.
Temple of the dog - Say hello to heaven is a must to listen to! Chris dedicated that song to his friend Andrew Wood who died of an overdose and it's a masterpiece in songwriting! Those lyrics physically hurt when you hear them...
YES!!!!!! Mother Love Bone! The original Pearl Jam play some Stargazer. Chloe Dancer/ crown of thorns
For me, Cornells finest (if that's possible) performance
There is a great live performance from Moore Theatre video out that that would be perfect for an analysis.
I was lucky enough to hear him do it live in 2016 in Belfast. I swore I could feel his voice over the PA
Finally, Elizabeth is going to hear 2 of the greatest voices in rock music.
Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder.
For Eddie you need to react to “Black” performed live at MTV unplugged 1992. So much emotion it is crazy
This song is so powerful, so rich in innuendo, a true classic
I wouldn't call this innuendo though - they preach this song in a very straightforward fashion. Grunge anthem for sure.
@@pawacoteng yeah this is a pure protest song imo
You need to hear “Outshined” by Soundgarden. Chris is pretty mellow in this.
Slaves & Bulldozers is definitely tougher to sing.
I would have said 'Slaves and Bulldozers'
Big dumb sex 😂😉
Definitely outshined you need to listen to that it'll blow your mind
@@alyberop1 - I'm going with the song I first heard him on
I can attest to the fact of how glorious it was to hear them sing this together live.
Wow! Are there any recordings of that set?
I was at this tour also but in Vancouver, BC. One of the best festivals I've ever been to. entire lineup was amazing. Once in a lifetime.

Grunge singers have some of the most incredible voices. Chris, Eddie and Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) all did some amazing things with the vocals in their music.
Mark Lanegan is another one with a lengthy career. Screaming Trees, Queen's of The Stone Age, solo, and a variety of collaborations.
I'd have to stick Scott up there too!
