I agree with you on the best thing MTV did was the series of Unplugged. The songs broken down to the very raw sounds of the great artists they had on the program.
The great thing about Pearl Jam is, when singing along, you can just make up entire words and it still sounds right. I sing along to all the songs and guarantee I'm getting 90% of the words wrong. lol.
I love that lyric; I think that this is my favorite song from Pearl Jam and has brought a tear to my eye for 30+ years now. Truly heart-wrenching but beautiful.
Yeah, there are so many good lines in this song but that one just expresses it all, and every man who has had his heart broken understands and feels this. The best music takes the feelings and pain in us and gives it expression so we can go through it without feeling alone, and maybe heal
Who else watched for 24 minutes just to see her reaction to the gut wrenching "We! We belong! We belong together! Together! Weeee! We belong! We belong together!!"? That gets me every time, best performance of Black ever.
I saw this on MTV when it was on tv live, I was in 8th grade. My dad was in the room, he hated 90's rock, he's more of a Beach Boy's 1950's sound type of guy. When this song was getting to it's climax I remember him standing up in the living room... I did too, we were both absolutely blown away by this song and how amazing the live performance was. He's 68 now and still a Pearl Jam fan.
i watched it live too and recorded it on vhs! in germany! i hadn’t heard black before this but was already into pearl jam and had their vs. album (my first non-christian cd i ever bought haha tells you a little about my upbringing) when this song came on i was hooked. it just got better and better and them singing the background melody at the end while eddie is losing it was just mesmerizing. my favorite mtv unplugged performance hands down.
Yeah it's also reported, I think in Rollingstone, that he was literally sick of singing it because ever where he went people were playing it & he couldn't get away from it. People literally took his song from him
And as touching as this performance is, I think that when he played this song in honor of Chris Cornell hits even harder. When he ends the song half singing half crying "come back" absolutely kills me every single time
Me too, so when she kept pulling it back to re-hear it… 😂 oh boy, yeah. The usual times a thousand. LoL As a long time PJ fan, this analysis is so well captured! Thank you for doing this. This performance has been my favourite of all time for this song, the rest of the band’s performance is equally as staggering. Tip (not for analysis, just to hear): State of Love and Trust, from this show.
"I know some day you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody elses sky but why....why...why can't it be....can't it me mine." My favorite lyric of any song. It's deeply personal to Eddie but also to anyone who hears it. Beauty and Sadness made perfect.
I really liked this song when it first came out but after getting divorced 5 years ago, I feel it on a completely different level. It hurts sometimes, to listen to it, but it also makes me feel better afterwards.
@@kevinwheesysouthward9295 I can definitely relate to this. My wife and I loved this song and we basically created our children together while it was playing. I mean we played it almost every single night as we were going to bed. If we were ever to split I am positive I'd have a mental breakdown if I heard this song.
I watched it live as a massive fan. Had just seen them at the Glenn Miller Ballroom in Boulder Co a couple of months earlier. A show with about 100, maybe 200 people in the crowd. Vedder over thoae couple years was one of the most dynamic things I've ever witnessed.
And Eddy had a horrible cold during this performance. Crazy amazing! This is my favorite song period. I went through a horrendous divorce after 30 years of marriage and 6 years dating. She was my high school sweetheart, different high schools, blind date. She told me she loved me but wasn’t IN love with me anymore. And we were both virgins. I haven’t been with a women since and never will. I sing to this song and am numb after every damn time. Thank you Eddy and all Pearl Jam members for helping to keep me alive. Even though there’s so much pain in this world. I also have bipolar disorder. Disease from the pits of hell. Love to you all!!!
I love how he, in 4 verses, describes his lack of vision of future: empty canvas, untouched clay, like an artist that's starting over. He has no plans anymore, no project for the future, nothing. He doesn't know what to do with his own life anymore, because she is gone. At the same time, he is describing their empty bed: the messy sheets where she one was, but not anymore. Simply genious. Geniously simple. And absolutely beautiful.
I was a teenager and I loved it but at the time I really didn’t comprehend or understand how otherworldly this was, we just took it for granted and there was so much good music being made, we didn’t comprehend that this was not going to happen again
“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky, but why can’t it be mine”, is the most gorgeous line ever written in a song IMO. We’ve all, myself included, been there. Got that one person that we’ve lost that this song brings us back to every time we hear it. Such an emotional and powerful performance!!!
That is some beautiful writing! Just a verse earlier Eddie drops this on us: And now my bitter hands Cradle broken glass Of what was everything The lyrics combined with his voice give these lines some of the most lamentful (I just made that word up) feelings I have heard in a song!
What about " Sometimes when I'm alone I wonder aloud if you are watching over me some place far abound " Cemetery gates which is also from that time period and has some of the most amazing lyrics as well.
No kidding! It's one of the most expressively poetic lines I've heard in music. I'm not generally impressed by such things, but if a mere line in a song can hit me in the feels like that, I'll give my respect.
@@excelsior-zs7vh Another line that gives me this emotion is a song Pearl Jam covers all the time... "Rockin in the Free World" by Neil Young. This line gets me (about a young person addicted to drugs): "There's one more kid that'll never go to school Never get to fall in love, never get to be cool"
@@insanejughead Damn right! My triad from the album. A myriad of emotions flood my head everytime I spin the record. Musically on point, vocally on point, lyrically on point. My fave Grunge album ever!
Agreed. Pearl Jam changed my taste for music forever. Alive has probably been the one song that most changed me. First time I heard it on MTV I was hooked.
There is a beautiful solo version of eddie playing this song as a tribute to Chris Cornell shortly after he passed, the two of them had been close friends. He can't get through the song without crying and the whole crowd is feeling all of the emotions with him, its very powerful.
Not a lot of people realize that the “little shake” with his head after the lyrics “all I taught her was everything.” Is actually him getting pissed off at himself for messing up the next line. He knew right then he was supposed to say “I know she gave me all that she wore,” but instead accidentally skipped forward to, “how quick the sun can drop away.” You can see it with his eye roll as he shakes his head, as if he’s cursing himself. That to me is what makes this performance one of the greatest ever. 9 out of 10 people didn’t even realize one of the greatest performances ever had a screw up error in it, because his professionalism covered it up so well that it went virtually unnoticed. A lot of artists would have stalled in the moment.
Never noticed this mistake, but after this skipping he went back to the lines what supposed to come and sang them as cool as he could. Like some kind of compensation. And this way, he did justice for that song.
@@kellyconner6607 Black is my favorite song, but here's a close 2nd on favorite lyric: "When you feel life ain't worth livin', you got to stand up and take a look 'round to the sky. And when your deepest thoughts are broken, keep on dreamin' boy 'coz when you stop dreamin' it's time to die." - Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon. Sadly he was not able to overcome his demons.
He’s a phenomenal songwriter, singer and performer. His growling voice and lyrics draw you in and feel the emotions. Eddie Vedder is one of my top three for sure. Just saw him in concert in Austin tx 2023 and he was still amazing as heck
Pearl Jam Unplugged; Stoned Temple Pilots Unplugged; and Nirvana Unplugged are the absolute BEST live performances I’ve ever seen in my life! I would give anything to be able to go back in time and watch these performances Live. I would give every dollar I ever own for the rest of my life to be able to watch these concerts live. It sucks I was only 2 years old when they performed these shows why couldn’t I be older in these days 😩
Eddie Vedder is without a doubt the most important voice I have heard since Robert Plant. His commitment to his fans is what legends are made of. Watching his live performances will blow your mind.
Lady, I didn’t think I could like this song any more than I already did. But your commentary and incredible description of what was going on from a musical/vocal perspective just notched it up even further. Thank you.
This live version is so much more emotional and since you can see his face it makes you feel it with him even more. I think the last section hits everyone, it definitely hit her hard. The shift in her emotion was very visible. If you've loved someone and had to watch them become a stranger you can truly relate to how he feels. It's a different kind of pain.
From what I've heard - Eddie had a massive head cold which frustrated him throughout the set. His friends in the crowd knew it, and you can hear them encourage him to push through it. He pulled it off amazingly, for a once in a lifetime performance.
yeah, in the unplugged soundcheck audio you can listening it. He does not force his voice in the high places and leaves pieces without singing. You can tell in his voice that he had a cold
@@rodsagredo totally disagree. Listening to the song, you get caught up in the performance. The pauses give you a moment to process the gravity of his lyrics. The song doesn't make me cry, but these videos tear me up.
I know some day you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star....In Somebody else's sky but why, why, why, can't it be mine......shit gets me. Every. Damn. Time. The raw emotion in this performance is unlike most anything today and actually makes my face leak a bit.
I think about this struggle all the time; it's awe inspiring in a way, sharing these raw emotions with others in such a talented way. Very rare indeed to be able to do it like this.
“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be the sun in somebody else’s sky, but why, why, why can’t it be mine?” The saddest lines in rock music. And who hasn’t felt that at some point in their life? Nobody I’d guess.
This is one of the best songs of the grunge period. And the emotion that Eddie puts in this performance is incredible. Elizabeth is thanking us for the suggestion, but we thank her for the knowledge and heart that she puts in her reactions...
This entire “Unplugged” performance was one that had formed my taste, as to what should be expected for emotional impact from an artist. “Unplugged’s” Alice in Chains and Nirvana shows were also generation changing.
Those 3 were all incredible, I have AIC’s as 1 but PJ and nirvana’s are incredibly good too and legendary as well. Miss those iconic unplugged performances.
He got so emotionally lost in this performance that he added the ending lines "we belong - we belong together" which are not part of the recorded song right there and then
Note that he often added those lines live, and this definitely wasn't the first time. I recommend looking up the 1992 Pinkpop performance of this song on YT, which to me is the quintessential version.
@@adamw13That performance at Pinkpop was hands down one of the greatest I have ever witnessed! I still can hear and see and feel that concert in my conscious mind, without ever watching it!!
"Black" is one of those songs that you realize in a few seconds that you're pulled inside a masterpiece. It is the kind of emotion that is hard to talk about, so best to sing about it. But this woman is amazing too; what a delight to watch and listen to!
He said this song was about letting go, but this performance is about how even if you let go, all it takes is a little scratch on that scar to take you right back to when the pain was fresh and raw.
It’s funny hearing this take on it. And I think she is right on with her analysis. But being the recording engineer on the record Ten, I had a different perspective on him developing his voice, lyrics and style in the studio. Before he was confident, after touring and playing live, and really owning it. Funny for me when you look back at all. Different perspective. But man did Eddie end up delivering and become a star that he should be.
We often joked with our friends that in Oceans Eddie was actually singing underwater😄Thanks for your contribution on one of my favourite albums. I bet you had a lot of fun recording Dirty Frank😁
Thematically, this song purports to be about letting go. But the intensity of the delivery shows that he is far from ready to let go and anticipates he will in fact be forever damaged. Brilliant juxtaposition.
Me too. It’s been my favorite song since it’s come out and every time I hear it all of my emotions come out. I don’t even have any proper personal pain and I relate it to. But I just feel his pain and it just gets me every single time. It’s the most powerful and emotional song of my life
I've listened to that song, the "Unplugged" version, at least a hundred times since the original performance. But I've never heard it described, unpacked and analyzed by a professional singer before. I had my own long list of reasons for liking the song. Now you've given me an entirely different, new and wonderful things to love. Thank you so much. It's a lovely gift.
This song and Eddie's performance are pure art, so deep, so much expression and emotion. One of the best songs and vocal performance of all times, just perfection level. ❤
goosebumps, tears form in my eyes, I have an actual physical reaction to Eddie's voice. Ten is the soundtrack to my youth and if I have to be in my 40's for that to have happened, then I am grateful.
My best best friend was killed while we were working together when we were 19, Black was his favorite song. Haven't listened to it since his funeral 5 years ago, decided I had to listen to this, I don't regret the decision at all. Heartbreaking, but so beautiful at the same time, I know Brendan would appreciate the shit out of this. Keep yourselves safe and get home to your families after the day folks ❤️
Sorry for your loss Lars Walther, but as long as it moves and effects you in this way, then your friend will never be too far from your heart, keep that feeling and your friend close and they will always be with you in some way.
This song literally never fails to reduce me to tears. It was a heavy favorite of my fiancée's after I introduced her to it. She up an' died on me [rude], and Eddie somehow manages to voice the pain I feel.
That’s a very real and very sad story. I guess there are songs that are like special moments of time that connect us to experience and tragedy… Over the years and decades of memories. May you have peace.
I´m so sad to hear that. The pure emotion in a song like this can somehow help process the pain. A song that recently helped me through some hard times was Poet and the pendulum by Nightwish. ruclips.net/video/iEzZRMthhXU/видео.html I wish the best to you!
Very sorry to hear of your loss. You're not alone. Lost my wife of 20 years to cancer. Pearl Jam was her and is one of my favorite bands of all time. Take care, live for your lost fiancee as I live for my wife. As long as they are in our hearts we retain a piece of what once was... and that is something, rather than nothing. Peace to you.
THE BEST breakup song ever imo. And I loved how much you loved it. Brings me to tears every time that I sit down and listen to it. The emotion in this song is so powerful.
The thing I love about this live version is you can see he's not singing to be great. He's singing to tell a story , to give you the emotion that he felt. Just pouring everything he had into every single line and note. Just watching his face with the song on silent would convey the pain and emotion in this song. It's why I can't listen to this song very often. Just opens the floodgates of emotion. Truly a legendary masterpiece !! :)
I really enjoyed your breakdown of this song and Eddie Vedder's amazing voice.. the emotion that he puts behind all their songs (especially in this Unplugged show) is just out of this world. 🎵
His lyrics to describe that kind of heartbreak is so spot on it feels like they capture my own heartbreak perfectly. The end lyrical run brings tears to my eyes every time I hear. I’m so thankful Eddie was able to capture this feeling.
I hope Eddie hears this reaction because I know he would love it. He's a really cool, down to Earth guy, and has always been extremely fan friendly! This is also my favorite Pearl Jam song!
I’m shocked too even if I’ve herd this song a million times. Amazing song. Amazing singer. Amazing band. Amazing analysis and so fun to watch. Why am I crying?
I am a huge Pearl Jam fan. I remember when this premiered on MTV, and the performance at times made me uncomfortable (in a way) because Eddie Vedder’s performance was so raw and vulnerable. You almost feel like you’re reading someone’s diary. I had the privilege to see Pearl Jam several times (1993, 1995, 1999, and again in 2003). This song is one of my favorites from this band, and it breaks my heart each time I hear it. I am so happy that you got to feel all the feels! Shivers, goosebumps, tears. Yes, yes, and yes!!!
remember the moment he took his hat off and turned into a different person? He also did that at a concert when the bouncers was hurting a kid and it pissed him off and he turned up the volume.
I know exactly what you mean about the performance. It felt personal. They've been one of my few favourite bands since I was 12 years old (27 years ago!) lol. I got the honour of seeing them live at Leeds festival once and I just stood there in awe, clutching my beer 😆 mind blown
Was at an Amsterdam solo gig of his after Chris died ... this song of his( along with 'Come Back' and every other!) was amazing and so full of feeling ....
Saw it live back in the day.... Eddie got the lyrics wrong in this.. He shook his head and absolutely killed the rest of the song. I remember that live. Nobody had ever spoken or noticed in these new reaction videos and analysis.
I wanted, more than anything in the world, to see Pearl Jam live in the early 90s. Unfortunately, their fight with Ticketmaster prevented a show in Philly where I lived at the time.
I think what I absolutely love the most about this video is knowing how this song has moved me, then watching someone else's first reaction to it. THE MOST satisfying thing I've ever watched is to see someones eyes light up when a certain sound or emotion in this song strikes someone else as it has me. The best feeling of human connection I could ever have.
I love that you're classically trained, but ultimately an enthusiast for music. It would be so easy to just poke holes in the performances, but you look for the cool things, and it's SO fun to watch. thanks!

This performance lives rent free in my heart and mind for life.
Nice!
Great memory to have with your Dad.
love this memory!
i watched it live too and recorded it on vhs! in germany! i hadn’t heard black before this but was already into pearl jam and had their vs. album (my first non-christian cd i ever bought haha tells you a little about my upbringing) when this song came on i was hooked. it just got better and better and them singing the background melody at the end while eddie is losing it was just mesmerizing. my favorite mtv unplugged performance hands down.
You'll remember that moment all your life buddy, beautiful
God. This is such a visceral performance. Dude was out here straight up grieving on stage. Man.
I cannot ever watch this whether here or live without grieving with him. It strips you bare every time
Yeah it's also reported, I think in Rollingstone, that he was literally sick of singing it because ever where he went people were playing it & he couldn't get away from it. People literally took his song from him
And as touching as this performance is, I think that when he played this song in honor of Chris Cornell hits even harder. When he ends the song half singing half crying "come back" absolutely kills me every single time
He has such a special tremolo effect he uses. Very skilled and powerful voice. But there is loads of pain in his voice too.
hell yeah
Analyzing Eddie Vetter is ridiculously hard. You've done the best job I've ever heard.
Well done
No song better describes the word "tortured" than this one. Makes me tear up every single time. A true masterpiece.
The unplugged version of Nutshell by Alice in Chains is up there too
I have to agree with you there Cody x
Me too, so when she kept pulling it back to re-hear it… 😂 oh boy, yeah. The usual times a thousand. LoL As a long time PJ fan, this analysis is so well captured! Thank you for doing this. This performance has been my favourite of all time for this song, the rest of the band’s performance is equally as staggering. Tip (not for analysis, just to hear): State of Love and Trust, from this show.
It's been a while by Staind is pretty raw
Respectfully disagree. I believe that Fell on Black Days acoustic by Chris Cornell describes it better
Eddie Vedder is a “translator” who can convert emotion into words and sounds. It’s truly amazing.
It is just that I need a translator to understand them sometimes 😂
@@CemeterySunshine oh the irony
Explains the diction... lol
I heard someone say "emotion isn't pitch-perfect" about grunge, and it's probably the best way to describe it. Love this genre so much.
The anguish is utterly visceral in this song.
Some of the best lyrics ever written
Song writing at it's rawest and most powerful
That line propels Black to my favourite PJ song. Was on repeat when my GF left me in high school.
This entire performance should be watched and reacted to. one of the best performances ever televised.
I agree. It is beautiful
If only it hadn't been taken down
As was Nirvana’s and AIC’s unplugged.
Excellent breakdown
He's a great lyricist.
Imagine how we old timers felt when we saw this live on MTV. 🤯
I wouldn’t call us old. It literally felt like yesterday.
@@FightScienceAa82Unfortunately, it wasn’t just yesterday. It’s roughly around 11,000 days ago. Yeah I did the math, and wish I hadn’t. Lol.
I was a teenager and I loved it but at the time I really didn’t comprehend or understand how otherworldly this was, we just took it for granted and there was so much good music being made, we didn’t comprehend that this was not going to happen again
Music TeleVision used to be about music
“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky, but why can’t it be mine”, is the most gorgeous line ever written in a song IMO. We’ve all, myself included, been there. Got that one person that we’ve lost that this song brings us back to every time we hear it. Such an emotional and powerful performance!!!
That is some beautiful writing! Just a verse earlier Eddie drops this on us:
And now my bitter hands
Cradle broken glass
Of what was everything
The lyrics combined with his voice give these lines some of the most lamentful (I just made that word up) feelings I have heard in a song!
What about " Sometimes when I'm alone I wonder aloud if you are watching over me some place far abound " Cemetery gates which is also from that time period and has some of the most amazing lyrics as well.
the imagery in this is gorgeous - but it's one of the very indicative things about Pearl Jam there is so much allusion and metaphor in their music -
That line... “ I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky but why can’t it be mine” gets me every time!!
This line gets me (about a young person addicted to drugs): "There's one more kid that'll never go to school
Never get to fall in love, never get to be cool"
The entire album, Ten, is a masterpiece. I'd love for you to hear it all. It's an emotional rollercoaster to be sure.
Garden, Black, and Release! HOLY HELL WHAT A POWERFUL TRIO OF BALLADS!
Best seventh grade purchase for me. Was thrilled when this came out
@@insanejughead Damn right! My triad from the album. A myriad of emotions flood my head everytime I spin the record. Musically on point, vocally on point, lyrically on point.
My fave Grunge album ever!
I’ve bought it in several incarnations and listened hundreds of times.
Yeah, I noticed it too and was about to leave a similar comment about it. ;)
I never picked up on that. just goes to show what a consumate professional Eddie is.
Wow. Never noticed that before and I've watched this probably a thousand times. Doesn't change a thing for me. Still the best live performance ever!
Yeah i notice it three same betram and Matt 😅
Never noticed this mistake, but after this skipping he went back to the lines what supposed to come and sang them as cool as he could. Like some kind of compensation. And this way, he did justice for that song.
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why...why can't it be mine?" wow, just wow!
Exactly .... brilliant
Greatest love song lyric ever!
This is honestly my most favorite line written in any song ever.
So beautiful and painful

The shift in her emotion was very visible. If you've loved someone and had to watch them become a stranger you can truly relate to how he feels. It's a different kind of pain.
Nailed it!
From what I've heard - Eddie had a massive head cold which frustrated him throughout the set. His friends in the crowd knew it, and you can hear them encourage him to push through it. He pulled it off amazingly, for a once in a lifetime performance.

This song will still be heart-wrenching after it's 100th listen. So authentic, so beautiful!
“We belong together...” you can’t try to create that. It is pure emotion. I love it.
His ability to project that level of pain over and over is just amazing.
The thing I love about this live version is you can see he's not singing to be great. He's singing to tell a story , to give you the emotion that he felt.

I heard this song the next morning at work, after the end of a very long relationship. I was crying uncontrollably.
