It seems so real because it is. It's a song Eddie wrote from a breakup. He never wanted it to be on the album let alone be a single but once the record label heard it they convinced him to put it on there and it became a huge hit. Easy to see why, especially with this performance.
You are completely right. None of this is fake or planned out. He is a ball of emotion during this song. Just him rocking back and forth on a stool so violently proves this. Every note and how it's sung has a special feeling only he knows. He can barely hold on. And you get those same feelings (or goosebumps) that I always have listening for 30 years. So, seeing you feel those the first time you listened, makes me feel not alone and hopeful...also, your voice is truly amazing,! 💖
The headshake was because he fumbled the lyrics there, skipping a verse. The ending, after "Mine" is all ad-lib and/or added for this performance and IT WAS MASTERFUL. I related to this song to my grandma's passing, not to a broken heart from a relationship, but a a loss is a loss. Thanks for the analysis.
@@pimark69 after "Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn, ooh And all I taught her was everything" the lyrics should be "Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds Of what was everything" But that part is nowhere to be found in this live version. He shook his head because he knew he skipped forward. The ending makes up for it, like 10 fold. Like he wanted to redeem himself.
6:34 Your reactions are some of the best on the Internet. This song was part of my basic vocabulary in the 90s, and yet you made me understand it in new ways. Thank you, and please keep doing what you do and being you.

His emotional connection to his songs is unmatched in my opinion. He conveys that emotion in a way the listener can't help but feel. The purpose of music and all art being to convey feeling makes him one of the best vocalists of his generation
Best vocal reactor on the scene. How you break down the the technical aspects while honoring the underlying emotions powering the song/performance. This reaction and the one for Sober speak as much to your humanity as your skillset. Kudos.
Can’t believe you’re never heard the amazing Pearl Jam. Ten is one of the best albums of all time. I watched this when it was first broadcast and it still gives me goosebumps.
There's a saying in sports "Special players make special plays on special days" and this is a great musical example of it. I remember when this came out on MTV in 1992. Even at 17 years old I'm pretty sure I knew what a remarkable performance I was watching. Just an amazing time to be a teenager musically and otherwise. Great reaction! I learned a lot.
10:17 the way he sings "cradle" here is sublime, it's one of the most satisfying and pleasing tones Eddie can generate. I honestly come back to this song again and again and again just for the way he sings that entire line.
Good morning Fairy Voice Mother! I've watched countless reactors and analyzers, but you're the only one I've actually subscribed to and gone back and watched the entire catalogue. You have the perfect combination of humor, knowledge, and passion. Thanks for all you do! For a recommendation, have you ever listened to Falling In Reverse before? They recently released a new "reimagined" cover of Papa Roach's Last Resort. There's cries, screams, fries, and whispery falsettos. I'm sure you'd get a kick out of it!
I agree. There are other good vocal coach reaction people out there, but no one, I think, explains stuff as well as our fairy here.. She explains efficiently, and then demonstrates A LOT of the points she's making, which makes a big difference. Even The Charismatic Voice doesn't do that. Nor is she as concise. I'll say voicemommy is the best on YT for this type of content!
There are three analysts that completely stand out for me. I won't name names (ok Julia and Elizabeth) but TFVM, being an actual fairy, generates that magical pixie dust (which as we all know) transforms everything into chocolaty love-filled endless first morning sips of coffee. She's an alchemist; a hyper-accelerator of artistic expression, transmuting her own experiences into these extremely dopamine inducing digests for people to love and appreciate together forever. From the editing, the intro sequence, the vocal knowledge, the buttery voice, the humor, the emotivity, the articulation, the cute-ability and on and on; this is a whole new medium of artistic journalism of which she can only one day be regarded as a pioneering founder, I'm sure. Honestly I'm just so grateful for this type of content as it literally brings much needed hope and joy into the world. Sorry for the disgustingly gushy explosion of fanboism, but what else am I gonna do when I can't sleep while extremely overtired.
Brilliant reaction, as always. I always had a soft spot for Temple of the Dog’s ‘Hungerstrike’, as it has that incredible combo of Vedder and Cornell going back and fore in one song. They compliment eachother insanely well.
I am currently a bit obsessed by Hunger Strike, The balance between Vedder and Cornell is amazing. Very different vocalists but both amazingly effective.
Best breakdown of Eddie Vedder performance that I've heard. Nice job! Nobody sings with the emotion that Eddie does. Most music you hear....with Eddie Vedder's, you feel it.
All I taught her was EVERYTHING, then whispers, “That’s All”. He didn’t want to put this on the album because the pain of performing and singing it. So glad he decided to do it. Been one of my favorite songs since it came out. This is actually the first CD I ever bought. It’s also my first time watching your channel. I enjoy your knowledge and passion mixed with humor.
Correct, he literally walked out of the surf with lyrics and dubbed them over a mix of Godards (Guitarist) and wala. Funny you mentioned a good actors trains for raw emotions. Eddie said in an interview “people keep requesting Black when it’s so hard to perform every concert, people don’t realise we’re not actors “ verbatim more or less. Best reaction sweetheart.😊 Oh yeah nobody knows who the lover was some assumed it was his very first love.❤
wow i love your reaction to this. dont know your channel yet and i found the vocal things super interesting and i was so happy you got all the greatness this song is! when i was a teenager i listened to it on headphones in the dark lying on my bedroom floor eating chocolate. eddie is the best. there was so much amazing music during this time.
I've watched more than a dozen reactions to this performance and yours is by far the best one. Excellent analysis. I think even Eddie would be fascinated by this because I highly doubt he is even aware of "what he's doing". It comes naturally to him. I'd LOVE you to react to a much more recent performance of Pearl Jam. It's "Release" from 2016 at Wrigley Field. Please do that one. ❤
Definitely I highly doubt alot of singers realise how indeapth it can get when just originally creating a song from the heart. I have never even bothered to understand a song from its lyrics but how it makes me feel., my cousin does but if you watched metallica on st anger they would grab an overall feeling and find a word to suit, I think so many people get mixed up in what they think the artist is saying they miss what is is there to be felt
Let's just say that seeing a new reaction video come up on my feed from this women makes my day!!!! She is the ONLY one I NEVER fast forward through a lot of the commentary....And why is that you may ask 🤔 because it's as good as the music she is reaction to! And this is a rare thing from most reactors and vocal coaches on RUclips.
I love the combination of your impressive expertise with raw emotion. It's an absolute joy to witness, especially when experiencing the same emotions along with you. Thank you! I encourage you to watch his version of this song, live in Italy, shortly after we lost Chris Cornell, one of his closest friends. When he starts ad-libbing towards the end, he breaks down emotionally while singing "come back, come back," and it feels like my soul is being shredded. Jeff is your favorite singer, he's in my top 3, along with Chris. Ironically, when Jeff died, they did a little tribute piece on tv for him, and Chris was in it (as I am sure you know they were close) and it's spooky how he talks about how finding out Jeff was gone felt surreal. Because that's how I *still* feel about Chris being gone. It's completely unhealthy, but I have never completely dealt with his loss and I am still unable to hear him sing without immediately losing it, so I just don't listen. I'm the same way with Scott Hutchinson of Frightened Rabbit. I just can't listen to him yet, it's so painful. 😢
Eddie Vedder is one absolutely stunning artist, his vocals are just incredible! Yes it often causes Frissons rather profusely! Great reaction and technical nerdery, ❤it (and you) 🌹
This is by far the best version of this song. This is the live song that made me realise that sometimes live versions are better. A lot of bands or singers sometimes can't live up to the studio versions, and then there are magical moments like this. Your reaction is also the only time I've seen anyone comment on Eddie's iconic mouth shape or tongue positioning. That helped me understand his method way better, so thank you. Hope this is a rabbit hole you delve deeper into, they have a lot of great songs.
Just come from your Eivor video (Trodlabunding) - huge fan, and massive fan of Pearl Jam, but wanted to say this is the BEST reaction I've seen by a LONG shot because there's analysis, its so deep & detailed, and so simply explained that people like me (that couldnt hold a note if it was made of plastic) can understand. Blood brilliant, looking forward to more!
Great reaction. I learned a lot. Not just about great singing techniques but also about what it takes to make that emotional connection with the audience. I really believe that when Eddie sings this song, for him the audience is no longer there and he is just there with his love. Just as many of us envision the loves that could have been when we listen to this master piece.
DAMN. Im impressed by her ability to sing and know whats going on and explain it and demo it. ALOT of ''vocal'' coaches i see dont sing that much and just comment but when YOU sing it and explain the movments it RLY RLY RLY proves ur a singer.
One of the best songs of all time for me. Along the same lines of very emotional grunge i deeply recommend: "Mad Season - Wake up" (live in Seattle) - makes me cry very time just as "black" does. I enjoy watching your reaction videos so much because you both truely FEEL the music (which is very visible) and DESCRIBE the technics behind it so very comprehensible.
I think everyone who's experienced rejection can confidently say that this song - and this version particularly - embodies those roller coaster of emotions perfectly. I think that's why it hits so hard every damn time I see this video.
Grunge music is awesome and hit me at the right time in my life when it first came out. I love the raw emotion that they deliver so effectively. Alice and Chains, Pearl Jam, nirvana, etc… I love to see people who are more classically trained analyze and appreciate their approach to delivering music. What a wonderful different approach that reaches so many people. 🙏☮️🕉️
You're the most fun, most skilled vocal coach on youtube. Not only you can reproduce all the techniques portrayed by the most skilled singers such as different timbres of vocal distortion but also you do it in a didactic and fun way to watch. And the harmonies you put in the intro and in the explanations during the video are just the cherry on top. The reacton in itself is also full of emotion, capturing the singers emotion.
I was 19 when this was album released and did not appreciate this song as much as I do now. That being said, I got goosebumps watching this on MTV then and still do to this day. This performance is wonderful. Watch again and pay attention to his body language as the song progresses. You can tell he is really feeling the lyrics. BTW, this was a song about a girlfriend after a bad break up. He later got back with her and married her. Great reaction, as usual!
They also divorced in 2000 after 6 years of marriage, a few of his song lyrics around the time of Ten and the demo's that later appeared on Lost Dogs were about Beth.
The song Black is a song about Eddie's girlfriend in highschool, they had to break up for private reasons and so he left Chicago and moved to San Diego and there he met Beth in 1984 and they got married in 1994. Oceans is about Beth and then they divorced in 2000 and then he met his new wife Jill Vedder and they have 2 daughters Olivia and Harper and their still happily married. That's the story. 😊💓🤘✌️
I think you managed to nail that series of musical eras in remarkably short order. I went through a ‘70s phase and I was struck by the great songwriting in general and of course the heavy rock aspect. But as a child in the ‘80s I remember hearing a lot of lite songs I disliked, with synth solos and whatnot very common. Then I got to grow up in the ‘90s, thank God. It was so fortunate to have songs and bands like this for a soundtrack to my adolescence and beyond. Things went back to being heavy and real. And speaking of real, Eddie has always struck me as nothing less. Especially here, when by the end of it he is just injecting his whole heart into the performance.
Many people try to define "grunge" by how the music sounds or how it's assembled. These people miss the point. Most artists in this genre sound VERY different, but the one thing that stands out, and the reason this music is so important to those of us who lived through it, is the emotional content. It's about making you FEEL.
Perfectly said. I was a teenage girl back then and remember running around Seattle going from show to show with my older sister. It was an experience that I’d PAY to relive just one more time. Grunge was my life. It’s what I lived daily and I can only describe it as epic
This is my 1st time here ..and the 1st time I've re-watched a reaction video. Love your analysis / breakdown. Your facial reaction is as raw as Eddie Vedder's emotional expression. Pleased to meet you 🙏 🍻
I'm not a singer. I watch your videos because I absolutely love how insightful you are. The way you can explain all the techniques and intricacies of the voice is so impressive. And I just think you are a beautiful soul.
So the reason he shakes his head like that during the first chorus is that he sang the wrong lyrics - he sang the second chorus lyrics. I'm always impressed that he just kept going instead of stopping or hesitating, he never breaks the flow of the song despite catching himself making a mistake like that.
This was a PERFORMANCE, the vocals were so so so secondary to the emotion. Goosebumps. If you want to do another sublime MTV Unplugged performance, I highly recommend kd lang singing "Crying". Cheers!
All grunge rock is pure 100% honesty in all the lyrics!! That’s why it became so popular it wasn’t about money and fame and hooking up w women like the 80’s. It was about the music, pain and real life struggles!!

I don't know how many times I've watched this vid. It just guts me every time. His pain is so visceral and real.
Black unplugged is a stunningly beautiful song ..
I love this song. Eddie Vedder makes me cry every time.. so much emotion. Thanks for an amazing breakdown
Exactly the whole entire band knew he flubbed the lyrics and they felt that it just didn't matter....they knew Eddie would kill it.
Skipped a verse?
@@pimark69 after
"Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn, ooh
And all I taught her was everything"
the lyrics should be
"Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore
And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds
Of what was everything"
But that part is nowhere to be found in this live version. He shook his head because he knew he skipped forward. The ending makes up for it, like 10 fold. Like he wanted to redeem himself.
@@sillymonkey725he never skipped a verse , he sang the wrong verse there , he sang cradled broken glass line instead of chafe verse by mistake
Best analysis of this song from a vocal coach that I have seen, period. 👍🏻
My man and band since I was 13. I wouldn't still be here without this performance.
6:34 Your reactions are some of the best on the Internet. This song was part of my basic vocabulary in the 90s, and yet you made me understand it in new ways. Thank you, and please keep doing what you do and being you.
So gritty & raw!! And when he does that little growl I melt. Then from bass to soprano is amazing. He is a MASTER. My favorite song
Really wonderful and beautifully empathetic reaction to this song. You always have engaging and informative technical discussion as well, but this song is a FEELS song, and I really appreciate how you sat with the experience and let it wash over your skin in the discussion.
Absolutely love the balance of video reaction and instruction. Just great.
Oh good grief your reactions are so fun to watch! Your edits and everything… top notch all around! And such a treat to see someone experience a song with the same enjoyment as I did 30 years ago!
Pearl Jam was the absolute best of the 90’s. Eddie sings with such passion, always. Ten is my #1 album of the last 30 years
His emotional connection to his songs is unmatched in my opinion.
For real, you've never heard pj? I can't buy that
There's a saying in sports "Special players make special plays on special days" and this is a great musical example of it. I remember when this came out on MTV in 1992. Even at 17 years old I'm pretty sure I knew what a remarkable performance I was watching. Just an amazing time to be a teenager musically and otherwise. Great reaction! I learned a lot.
I’ve seen several vocal analyses of this song but this one is the best all around. Great job.
How has any music fan NOT seen this?? LOL. One of the best live and acoustic performances in rock history. The emotion is insane.
It absolutely is one of the best live performances ever. I can’t count the number of times I’ve watched.
This is absolutely the greatest live and acoustic performances in history. I will die on that hill. Alice In Chains Unplugged is a close second.
@@afudge1014Black was by far the best performance in the MTV Unplugged’s but I think AIC had the best overall unplugged show.
Thouraly enjoyed your reaction and breakdown of this song. Your expertise on singing was insiteful and entertaining. Thank you very much!
10:17 the way he sings "cradle" here is sublime, it's one of the most satisfying and pleasing tones Eddie can generate. I honestly come back to this song again and again and again just for the way he sings that entire line.
I'm so happy to see you react to this absolute gem of a live performance. And your reaction is so pure and deep!
The woman is impressive on many levels. You get a days worth of knowledge, comedy, drama and entertainment all in 20 minutes. Gotta love her.
I feel you! There's no other RUclips reactor/analyst I've willingly gone and watched, liked, and commented on every single video. Lolli is unique
Agreed!!
Hey beautyfull!! Good reaction. I'm a grown man, but he makes me cry every single time. Greettings from Argentina
I really really really like your explanations. Very informative. Thank you.
Best breakdown of Eddie Vedder performance that I've heard. Nice job! Nobody sings with the emotion that Eddie does. Most music you hear....with Eddie Vedder's, you feel it.
Your edits are so fun, thank you for a fun and interesting channel!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Best analysis ever. The way you analyse with giving us examples using your own sound makes it so much clearer.
Eddie giving it every fibre of his talent tearing the emotion out through his voice - brilliant and real.
Yours is the first video I didn’t fast forward through you explained it so beautifully
Wonderful suggestion!! 😊💓🤘✌️
Yes. Please!
Black is my favorite song of all time. It’s just perfection. 💜💜
Its true, singing from the head vs singing from your heart, there is a huge difference and its passion that makes all the difference.
Great reaction and technical nerdery, ❤it (and you) 🌹
Such a powerful song and im so glad you got to experience it!
Awesome suggestion, I love Mad Season!! 😊💓🤘✌️
He’s one of the most emotional singers I’ve ever heard.
I think everyone who's experienced rejection can confidently say that this song - and this version particularly - embodies those roller coaster of emotions perfectly. I think that's why it hits so hard every damn time I see this video.
Fairy Voice Mother, you are the reason to watch this beautiful song 10 times. Thank you.
Great reaction, as usual!
oh i did not know he got her back! This makes me feel so much better for him lol
They also divorced in 2000 after 6 years of marriage, a few of his song lyrics around the time of Ten and the demo's that later appeared on Lost Dogs were about Beth.
If she didn’t get back with him after this… that’s gotta be not having a soul lol
One of my favorite songs of all time still to this day. Still gives me full body goosebumps.
Epic explanation young lady, really appreciate your break down of this classic live pearl jam master piece.
Yes it is not superficial, it is really very hardcore real
This is my 1st time here ..and the 1st time I've re-watched a reaction video. Love your analysis / breakdown. Your facial reaction is as raw as Eddie Vedder's emotional expression. Pleased to meet you 🙏
🍻
I'm not a singer. I watch your videos because I absolutely love how insightful you are. The way you can explain all the techniques and intricacies of the voice is so impressive.
And I just think you are a beautiful soul.
Black is the greatest heartbreaking love song of all time for every man! ❤
So the reason he shakes his head like that during the first chorus is that he sang the wrong lyrics - he sang the second chorus lyrics. I'm always impressed that he just kept going instead of stopping or hesitating, he never breaks the flow of the song despite catching himself making a mistake like that.
Loved your reaction to this. Could tell you were really affected.
This was a PERFORMANCE, the vocals were so so so secondary to the emotion. Goosebumps. If you want to do another sublime MTV Unplugged performance, I highly recommend kd lang singing "Crying". Cheers!
Beautiful analysis. I still cry when I listen to / watch this video. It hits.
All grunge rock is pure 100% honesty in all the lyrics!! That’s why it became so popular it wasn’t about money and fame and hooking up w women like the 80’s. It was about the music, pain and real life struggles!!
I really enjoyed your humor and banter! Your pretty awesome and beautiful too!!!
