    • @brewdaly1873
      @brewdaly1873 7 месяцев назад +3

I mean let's not be elitist here, or refuse to recognize the talent of many modern bands. For instance, NPR's Tiny Desk series is in many ways a spiritual successor to Unplugged. You can find a lot of absolutely amazing performances there.
I'd also say that bands like My Morning Jacket, Black Pumas, Hozier, Alt-J, Arcade a Fire, Jenny Lewis, Death Cab For Cutie, The XX, all would've fit in perfectly with Unplugged. There's a shit ton of great music being made today, including a lot of bands who were directly influenced by 90's grunge scene. To say that there aren't a plethora of bands who are capable of generating such emotion is literally to deny the influence of artists like Vedder. He inspired a multitude of artists after him, just as he was inspired by artists who came before him.
Nostalgia is a powerful emotion, and it's not unjustified. But that doesn't invalidate the power and talent of modern day musicans.

Yep, that's Eddie's voice for you lol.
I love hearing people newly discover the passion that went into grunge.
This is the stuff I grew up on and it will always be my favorite genre.
Most music in the world combined can't match the amount of passion and emotion that came out of just a few grunge artists.
When they play the songs, you feel every bit of it.
Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana, etc. There are others, but these are considered the "big" ones.
Another band worth checking out from the same era but more considered "post-grunge" is Bush. Gavin Rossdale has some great songs and he still sounds good nowadays too.

MTV unplugged is the one gift MTV left the world.
They gave so many iconic bands at the time this outlet, and it let to some of the most iconic live concerts.
Thinking of what MTV have become, with all the nonsense they do know. Its important to remember that once upon a time they where the only place that gave a platform for these bands to do this, and for the young listeners to interact with it in that way.
And the MTV Unplugged shows are legendary now, all because of what MTV used to be.

Eddie Vedder wrote this song after experiencing some very personal and extremely painful events in his life. He has stated that it was never his intention for this song to be released. By pure happenstance, one of the record producers overheard this song and loved it-literally begging Eddie multiple times to allow it to be on the record. Eddie has previously stated that this song will always be tragically painful for him to sing.
Oh, and one more thing, this performance was very nearly cancelled on this night, as Eddie had a terrible head cold, yet somehow he prevailed and delivered this incredible performance. Also recommend Audioslave "Like a stone" and Soundgardens "Fell on Black Days" to show you the magic of chris cornell. Also one of the big 4 of the grunge era and one of the greatest singers of all time.

Pearl Jam was such a great band precisely because Eddie was such a great storyteller. He put himself into different characters in his songs, sometimes shifting between points of view. His lyrics are sometimes impressionistic, but they give you enough to paint a story in your mind. I highly recommend checking out the songs "Daughter," "Better Man", and" Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town." How's that title for storytelling?

It is such an underrated song, it has so much emotion and meaning, different interpretations. Musically it's just a beautiful arrangement, it touches you if you dive into it.

Thanks for doing this vid. PJ has been My Favorite Band All Time and I have seen them 7 times in 4 different Cities. Eddie Vedder is one of the best live Vocalists of all time! (Rolling Stone Voted 7th of all time) Eddie and the Band dont put on Performances rather Experiences that We are just fortunate enough to wittness. Ironically in this MTV Unplugged “Experience” He had a cold/bronchitis so can You imagine!

Yes, the dawn of the 1990s, when low singing voices came back into prominence. Thinking about it, Pearl Jam’s massive commercial success, fronted by Eddie’s baritone, must’ve played a huge role in that. Guess he paved the way for low male singers everywhere. Excellent analysis and points made.

    Gods damn it.
I can't seem to get away from this song this week. I made it through this reaction without breaking down, okay, yeah, but the tears were _right fucking there,_ and I guess I don't hate being on the edge of a sobbing fit in this case, but then there's you _visibly_ feeling the song, and I may speak for a sizeable section of your audience saying that the fact that you look a bit like Serenity's mechanic, Kaylee Frye, adds a whole 'nother level of heart-wrench to the situation.
So I just subscribed. I follow too many reaction Tubers, but I can't seem _not_ to, I may have a problem.
And yeah, a Gen-X metalhead can tell you, we have to get away from this song for a while, now and then. I don't know what exactly was happening to us all in the nineties, but so many of us have held that handful of broken glass, have suffered that spinning, have that closed off little blackened room in our hearts of comfortably painful memories of that one lover that lit the world so brightly, and left us for calmer skies _(you can't take the sky from me)._ I don't know if they wrote songs like this before Pearl Jam did. I can't really recall any like it since. I don't really want to think about it now, 'cause like I said, we Gen-Xers have to get away from it for a while, now and then.
_Something changed_ in music in the nineties. I think. Maybe I'm telling myself stories. But I find an honest, open expression of pain in some music from the time that just _wasn't fucking happening_ before then. Not just, _oh, I got the blues,_ but how deep those blues were, who they came from, what they're doing to us, and such detailed expression of how those blues _feel._
It's all a bit too real. I'm going to start avoiding this song 'til my strength rebuilds, but this was a great reaction to break the contact off with.
    Good work, Ray. Good work.
