Yes! Thank you! There are so many great songs after the first major hits that always just get overlooked. Sure, I’d probably do “Porch” from Unplugged also. Eddie performing live in the 90s was truly one of the all time greatest live performers of all time. You could very easily react to every song from Unplugged (including the songs that didn't air,) and all would be worthy. I also would highly recommend Pearl Jam performance of their song "Porch" at Pink Pop 1992. What Eddie does during the performance is pretty insane. I don't want to spoil it. Much of the song becomes instrumental because of what he does, but hearing him before, during, and after his "wild" performance is worth it because you can analyze his voice throughout the process. Thanks for reacting to this Masterpiece of live music.
Love Reign Over Me VH1 Rock Honors I think 2007. It’s an amazing live performance that showcases Eddie’s voice. Also one that hasn’t been reacted to or analyzed enough
The dynamixs between the guitars is amazing. Stone is one of the best songwriters EVER. The play between guitars with PJ is is what makes them ... them. They would have made it huge with Andy Wood, too.
I always feel bad when vocal coaches/vocalists react to this song, because you really just have to get lost in the music to feel the full emotional impact of it. You don't really get the chance to do that when you are "on". This is on my "songs that make me feel the feels" list, and I hope you took some time later on to go back and just let yourself get washed away in it.
Relatable... but... other people feel different. And every reactioner has a different approach. And it may be hard to understand for you but there are even people who love Pearl Jams music but this song not so much. Like me. And I am a really emotional guy and can cry to many, many songs. To this one... not. And I listened to it back when the album was released a few dozen times - and later on here and then again many times 🙂 If someone does not relate emotional to a song so deep like you... it doesn't mean that the person cannot respect the quality of the song or even analyze it quite intense.
Eddie Vedder is probably my favorite grunge singer. There’s just something about his voice that so warm and familiar. In any case, his ability to connect with the feelings during his performance here is amazing! Please do all earlier stuff but especially my all time favorite “Just Breathe.”
do you actually believe anybody gives a damn about who your fave grunge singer is, gwen? you people need to get some real friends to tell all this crap to.
I think this is a very good power ballad; grunge needed those, too. Watching this performance always takes me back to when all those bands blew up. Think I might’ve watched this live back then. While recording it on a VCR. Mm. Just dated myself. But PJ is amazingly still going today- the last of the old guard left. Eddie’s baritone is a voice which wouldn’t have gotten a chance in the ‘80s. But he is actually a really decent dude and artist. This performance is nothing if not absolutely heartfelt. 💔
You should react to Jeremy and Even Flow. The original music video for Jeremy is very heavy, but it was groundbreaking at the time of its release. Jeremy was included in the MTV Unplugged set, so you could do a double reaction and cover both.
@@MichaelB769calm down bro it ain’t that serious. stick with me rq. just cus it was sung in another performance doesn’t mean it wasn’t improvised, it’s mind boggling stuff for you i know
State of Love and trust from this unplugged is also a good one I think, he gets pretty intense too and really into the song, almost possessed sometimes when you look at his face at the end. He’s got things to say, needs to spit them out , I’ll rewatch it now :)
One thing to note this band was only together not even a year before this was recorded. When this aired on mtv I was immediatly a fan and have been ever since.
Not quite, but close enough. Yes, the album Ten was released in late 1991, but the band itself formed in late 1990. This show was recorded in March, 1992. The band had been together about 16-18 months.
Off the Ten album most are going to recommend Jeremy, Alive and Even Flow as those were most popular. I would recommend Release. There are many great songs and singles from the next couple albums. Yellow Ledbetter is going to be the best vocals you'll never understand. Just Breathe, Last Kiss, Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town, Immortality are a few more recommendations.
I really like your last bit of recommendations. It is usually always just TEN. Which, I do understand is a classic album for a reason. However, so many more years of music beyond that. Not to mention solo material. I'll throw out Animal, Off He Goes, Brain of J., Amongst The Waves. Just to mix it up a bit (and without me going overboard).
They need to bring back Unplugged, so many great performances came out of this, acoustic instruments, no autotune, no real post possessing just the raw music and it was so great.
This is one of my favorite reactions for the first time. Everyone watching this as I did for the first time and every time since is so damn powerful and full of emotion.
PJ is still performing at an incredible level. Check out their performance of Tremor Christ at Fenway Park 2018. So many great tunes to react to from this band. Subbing for more PJ. 💛🤘🤙✌️😮
I really enjoyed how you break down all the pieces and put it in the voice and presenting quality. I've listen to this song over a 1000times so for me the built up and the function of using his voice in a certain way makes it even more interesting. I know the power of his pure presentation and showing us his soul. I remember being 21 years and see his performances live. Always quality although I was mostly stoned and semi drunk I guess.
I know it’s a bit of a meme that the lyrics of “yellow Ledbetter” are completely unintelligible but I do think that weirdly lends itself perfectly to vocal analysis. Without the distraction of lyrics you really are only left with the undeniable technique and masterful storytelling that Eddie is known for.
If you want more Eddie with a bonus, check out Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike. You get Eddie AND Chris Cornell in one song and their voices work amazingly well together.
If you listen closely to his words you hear the pain in his voice from what he experienced and brings that emotion out in this song. One of the best performances ever
i maintain that eddie vedder doesn't so much sing as become possessed by the spirit of the song he's performing. that's not to discredit his skill, but the man truly does seem to get lost in the music. it's a remarkable thing to watch.
He shakes his head at the first "How quick the sun can" because he sang a different line than is on the studio version. "I know she gave me all that she wore" it should have been, if I remember correctly. A great rendition, in any case - the best version.
Everyone enjoys music in different ways, let people enjoy things as they see fit. i didnt like how much she stopped the video, but she's enjoying it song in her own way and giving a vocal sense to what eddie did, its fine, guys. let people enjoy things.
I agree, let me enjoy the song without repeatedly stopping it during the good parts. :) they all do it different, but she paused so much to appreciate his voice, she missed a great song.
Thank you for this review, Jen. Eddie Vedder is one of the reasons i sing and perform. He proved to me that singing rock music you don't have to sound like Sebastian Bach or in another extreme like Metallica. That is Eddie's normal speaking voice by the way. 😊 Same as his singing voice. He is a natural. Thank you for this awesome analysis, as always. ❤
“Jeremy” is an iconic song. While the live unplugged version might be more raw, I think the official uncut music video is almost required to understand what the band meant to say in the song.
FYI Jen, The AD-LIB at the End, "We belong Together" IS NOT part of the Album Version!!! I was SHOCKED when I first saw this!!! Also, he was Sick during this!
Love your videos! As to where to go next, Jeremy, the official uncensored video is amazing and gutwrenching at the same time while the song itself is fantastic and a good showcase of Ed's vocals. Porch live at Pinkppp 92 is a wild and fun ride that shows their live show energy. You will not miss with any of theese songs.
Hi Jennifer - I just got started watching, but heard you say Pearl Jam was around during the "grunge" time. They are are more than just from around that time. I saw this on another reaction and I basically agree that the four groups that define grunge for most people are all Seattle based and are Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. Also, they actually just started then and are still performing and creating, I believe.
Me and my now wife were listening to this song on two separate discmans when we met. I noticed that she was mouthing the lyrics as she was almost a whole line behind what I was listening to. Obviously made for a great conversation starter. Plus probably one of the best sad love songs ever (kind of heart breaking).
Pearl jam was the best band! I saw them live at Glen Helen after winning tickets from KROQ. Best show ever! Yellow Ledbetter was incredible live! =) ...and the ladies in the crowd....OMG!
I’ll start by saying I’m biased because that is the era and the genre that made me love music but to me that is one of the most important performances in not only grunge rock history but rock history and mabye music history in general. I can’t get enough of it. I get in here just to listen to it at least once a month lol
I always love watching reactions to this song, specifically this performance. You mention how he shifts his body position and changes his voice to make us feel like he is connected to the song for the performance. However this song is very personal to him and initially fought the label to not release it as a single. What you see here, is not a performance. He's in that moment. Love this song and hands down probably the best MTV Unplugged performance of all time.
Great reaction and I DO feel like you acknowledged the emotions behind the performance even though that obviously wasn’t what you came here for…it was simply unavoidable.
I very much enjoy your reactions and analysis in these videos. Interesting and informative. Have you done a reaction and analysis with Boston’s More Than a Feelin’? If not, please do! Thank you.
Lovely reaction and analysis, Jen. When I saw that you were going to be doing Pearl Jam, I immediately needed to know what you would think of Eddie Vedder's very unique and unconventional rock voice. Very passionate rendition of this song. Keep being wonderful.
The guy puts his heart into every song. Lovely reaction. Recommendation for listening to Brandon Flowers and The Killers. And not Mr.Brightside, try When You Were Young or A Dustland Fairytale.
27 minute pearl jam black reaction - count me in! Edit: That was wonderful Jennifer. As a PJ from from the beginning, it brings me much joy to see a professional appreciate Eddie, and perhaps more importantly, help me understand why i love his voice too. Stupendous job by you on this, thank you!!!!
Please react to W.M.A. from their second album Vs. No one ever ever reacts to it and his vocals are so emotional and expressive. Tremor Christ from Vitalogy is also worthy of no longer being overlooked.
You have a great observation of how his singing style becomes personal at differing times. The song is about his ex-wife and how he feels cheated of the life they could have lived together. All that I've heard is that Eddie didn't want this track to become as popular as it did, but the fans' reaction was so intense he couldn't avoid it. It is extremely beautiful, personal, and tragic.
You experienced one of the best live performances ever with that one. Eddie transported himself back to the time when certain things happened n he showed how he felt during that time. Simply an amazing performance to a beautiful n heartbreaking/powerful song
His sang this as a tribute to Chris Cornell, that was a heartbreaking performance. "where do I go now?" You could list to both him and Chris Cornell performing a collabe/tribute band Temple of the Dog - "Huger Strike".
Would love to see you react to Porch from the same MTV unplugged show. The bridge breakdown on that one is amazing. Talk about tension release… Speaking of, the song Release live from Holland 1992 is also one of my favorites
Great reaction and analysis, Jennifer. Now I think your next Pearl Jam reaction should be the song "Alive". According to Eddie Vedder himself, "Alive" is partially an autobiography of his own life.
Loving the rock stuff you're doing. How about something a bit out there.. Hallowed be thy name by iron Maiden? Lots. Of vibrato and operatic singing, and a huge band will help drive more traffic to this excellent channel!

She will probably receive a Grammy nomination in November in this category as well. Check out her Jeremiah song on RUclips from the Grand Ole Opry or her American Dreaming song on RUclips from Stephen Cobert late show performance.
"Jeremy" "Even Flow" "Yellow Ledbetter" are also Eddie Vedder, and they all come from different places and are quite different from each other, they're all good songs to look at. Jeremy though is kind of heavy if you watch the music video and somewhat loosely based on a true story.
Why can't you listen to the song first and then go back and break it down. The majority of people want to hear your reaction to the song. If you listen to the song first and then listen to the song breaking it down you are able to make all of your listeners happy.
Copyright infringements. They often get their reaction videos taken down by RUclips because of artists copyright infringements. Some artists songs, no matter what they do their videos they still get blocked.
@JTW05 that's not the case at all. They do have to pause it and make commentary,I do understand that. But they don't have to dissect the song line by line. Verse and chorus then break for discussion. Repeat till the end of the song. Then go back and listen to it with intent of looking at it through a vocal coaches lens.
@@dwood21851 It is the case and different music reactors adjust their content to suite. Vocal coaches seem to like to breakdown the vocials as they go reacting to each change of vocal change especially if they haven't heard them before and they have a unique voice. Non vocal coaches react differently, usually just fluff stuff. If they played the song all the way through 1st up 99.9% of their content would be blocked and would be wasting their time. @@JTW05 you clearly are not list to what I'm saying. I never said to listen to the song straight through first. This is the voice that taught me where to find the place that opens up the deep bass in my voice, once I learnt to relax the restriction and open up the back of the throat I learnt to get a way fuller sound. Eddie really likes the R and Mmmm sounds rather than just move between vowels
Eddie Vedder can infamously be attributed (perhaps along with Layne Staley) with creating or popularizing what has become known as the "yarl". As you note, it is vocal style colored by a subtle "rrr" behind the vowels. A whole wave of lesser vocalists followed in the mid to late 90's adopting the style, Stone Temple Pilots, Seven Mary Three, Collective Soul, the whole of the post-grunge genre, etc.
For all of grunge music, there is a gritting of teeth. This music comes from pure pain and the opening and loosening of volume is openly played with. Poetry in a pure form
This performance can’t be judged in a traditional manner. It’s a raw emotional performance. One of the truest moments on TV, in my opinion

Back then, you didnt just write and sing the music. You were the music. Eddie, all heart, grit and soul.
And think...he was sick that night ( flu ) ! Yet , that "we belong together"at the end was improvised .
And the rest of the band improvised what to play as he sang it? Pretty sure they had to have rehearsed that.
@@MichaelB769 They just kept playing the rest of the song? Just the vocals were improvised.
@@mrgabreis That's not the first time I heard that ending, so.... source?
@@MichaelB769calm down bro it ain’t that serious. stick with me rq. just cus it was sung in another performance doesn’t mean it wasn’t improvised, it’s mind boggling stuff for you i know
@@solantss1084 Actually no, that's exactly what it means. You should probably look into the definition of 'improvise.' Bro.
I get chills every time I hear the we belong together line
There was a beautiful delicate moment in time when MTV had some of the greatest live musical performances we will ever get to see.
And now here we are.
Still able to see them regularly & listen to new music by PJ every few years.
I’ll see this as a win!🍀
Porch!
Eddie has such a great voice. He sings with such passion. He uses wonderful dynamics. You should also listen to Jeremy which is a true story.
One of the best performances ever
i maintain that eddie vedder doesn't so much sing as become possessed by the spirit of the song he's performing. that's not to discredit his skill, but the man truly does seem to get lost in the music. it's a remarkable thing to watch.
much like the artist aurora. they both feel more like fey than humans sometimes.
Ah amazing!
Watch the entire unplugged of pearl jam, it's awesome
Do an analysis of Pearl Jam - Reign O'er Me live on VH1. That vocal performance is absolutely incredible.
This was one of the best song reactions I've seen by someone who really gets singing. I could watch you react to pasta.
Every body loves Eddie and wreckage is pretty good stuff he's like taking the sound a different direction he's awesome❤
"Alive" from the same acoustic is amazing.
It seems like Eddie tastes every sound that he makes and savors it.
I’ll start by saying I’m biased because that is the era and the genre that made me love music but to me that is one of the most important performances in not only grunge rock history but rock history and mabye music history in general. I can’t get enough of it. I get in here just to listen to it at least once a month lol
This was a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable reaction; the best I’ve yet watched.
Thanks so much!
Thank you ☺️
I very much enjoy your reactions and analysis in these videos.
Ah! I love it😁
GREAT REVIEW! I really love your take on this beautiful song, thank you...
Thank you ☺️
I've heard this version hundreds of times and seeing it thru your vocal eyes has given me a new perspective! Subscribed!
Thanks so much!
The guy puts his heart into every song. Lovely reaction. Recommendation for listening to Brandon Flowers and The Killers. And not Mr.Brightside, try When You Were Young or A Dustland Fairytale.
Eddie Vedder is a master singer, always was and always will be my favourite !!!!!
One of the greatest live performances in history. Authentic pain coming from the entire band . Amazing
If you want to hear more, try tge duet between Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell (from Soundgarden) on Themple of the Dog - Hunger Strike
I loved your reaction and your lesson in voice coaching. Thanks for the video! ❤
Que peñazo!!! Parando cada 15 segundos, inaguantable
Oh will you please shut up.
Watch "Porch" from the same show. It's incredible
Love this version of this song.great reaction
One of the best live performances ever! 😎
You experienced one of the best live performances ever with that one. Eddie transported himself back to the time when certain things happened n he showed how he felt during that time.
Simply an amazing performance to a beautiful n heartbreaking/powerful song
In the 2011 book Pearl Jam Twenty, Vedder said about the meaning of the song: It's about first relationships. The song is about letting go.
His sang this as a tribute to Chris Cornell, that was a heartbreaking performance. "where do I go now?" You could list to both him and Chris Cornell performing a collabe/tribute band Temple of the Dog - "Huger Strike".
He’s voice is a warble. It’s beautiful
Would love to see you react to Porch from the same MTV unplugged show. The bridge breakdown on that one is amazing. Talk about tension release…
Speaking of, the song Release live from Holland 1992 is also one of my favorites
should watch their 'oceans' unplugged as well
Any Pearl Jam mtv unplugged is amazing
Great analysis and reaction 😁 awesome 🎉
Great reaction and analysis, Jennifer. Now I think your next Pearl Jam reaction should be the song "Alive". According to Eddie Vedder himself, "Alive" is partially an autobiography of his own life.
That was all raw emotion....
New fan, thank you for doing what you are doing!
Such an amazing and emotional performance. Love this review ❤
Loving the rock stuff you're doing. How about something a bit out there.. Hallowed be thy name by iron Maiden? Lots. Of vibrato and operatic singing, and a huge band will help drive more traffic to this excellent channel!
Ooohhhh! Thank you for the heads up😁
Try the live version of Wreckage, played in LA and posted on their channel 😉
Sierra Ferrell is a rising Americana, roots, country, bluegrass artist that just last week won best artist and best album of the year for Americana Honor Awards. She will probably receive a Grammy nomination in November in this category as well. Check out her Jeremiah song on RUclips from the Grand Ole Opry or her American Dreaming song on RUclips from Stephen Cobert late show performance.
Pausing during that last verse is fucking diabolical
Some content creators have commented on this many times.
@@JTW05 you clearly are not list to what I'm saying. I never said to listen to the song straight through first. I said listen to it like any other reactor does who isn't a vocal coach. 95% of reactors are not vocal coaches. They listen to the song and react to it. Pausing along the way a few times for copyright reasons. She could do the same. Then start over and break it down as a vocal coach. She would gain many more followers and lose none. I know this because I had the same conversation with another vocal coach reactor and her subscriptions and views went up significantly. I'm not trying to be negative. I'm trying to help. It's called constructive criticism.
@@dwood21851 Bro it's her channel. She can do it the way she wants. If you want to do it that way start your own and follow the other 95% of the fluff watchers.
She is a vocal coach and like I said she obviously likes to break it down as she listened to it, for the first time.
Bro let it go. It's her channel, start your own if you think she isn't doing it the way you want.
This is the voice that taught me where to find the place that opens up the deep bass in my voice, once I learnt to relax the restriction and open up the back of the throat I learnt to get a way fuller sound. Eddie really likes the R and Mmmm sounds rather than just move between vowels
They performed this and at least half of this album in Baltimore less than 2 weeks ago. The energy was insane.
This Song... ❣️😭
For all of grunge music, there is a gritting of teeth. This music comes from pure pain and the opening and loosening of volume is openly played with. Poetry in a pure form
Indifference off the verses album! Beautiful vocals
