I'm 44 and have I've heard this song nearly 1,000 times over the past 30 years, and honestly I can listen to it anytime on any given day. It's my favorite song and this rendition is the best live performance of all time IMO!
Literally, word for word, exactly what I would have posted.
Not only is this the best rendition of this song, it's gotta be top 5 live performances for me, being only memorably eclipsed by Pink Floyd's live wall concerts and Pink Floyd's Pulse tour video.

im 60 old time rock n roller drummer. The 90's were a disappointment to me for good musicianship, catch songs and solid band chemistry. This band rates with all the greats of 70's and early 80's Love 'em.
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life. I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why can't it be mine?" is such an epic lyric here. It's simple, but the emotion he delivers it with can be felt, still, watching this 32 years later. Just an amazing performance. My other favorite lyric from Eddie, is from Jeremy, "Daddy didn't give affection, no. And the boy was something that mommy wouldn't wear." His writing is amazing.
That line is so incredibly good, it hurts.
Pearl Jam is definitely a band that is appreciated by yourself. But, they're not all sad. They're insightful, inspirational, angry, joyous. Their music is human. It's not contrived. Thank you for reacting

9:52 YES! His sounds when he’s not singing brings so much feeling and emotion. His grunts, his humming, his ‘yeahs’ his ‘uh’ packs so much emotion. Not only can you hear his pain, you can practically feel his pain by the way he delivers it.
eddie vedder’s voice has always made me think of drinking hot tea with whiskey with a snuggly blanket on my lap. it’s soothing with just the right amount of edge to warm you up, and it wraps you in warmth and comfort.

Fun fact he was sick this day and still delivered a unbelievable performance for unplugged! If you get a chance watch the whole unplugged about 45 min. Absolutely incredible!

Great stuff. As someone who grew into this genre as it was developing, I can say that it was very emotionally heavy and reflected the state of my life at the time. My friends and I, however, would have mix tapes consisting of Pearl Jam , Soundgarden, Wu-tang, The Fugees, NOFX, and many more. They were all bands we loved, and even the slow ones got us pumped because they meant something to us.
I can’t not emphasize enough how starved we were for real content not manufactured via boy bands, etc… and how, almost all in the same year, we got Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Dr. Dre and Snoop, and Tupac… I’m missing a lot of groups but I’m not missing how we went from being provided the worst manufactured content to the best music, in an over abundance, that any generation since has known. Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, 2Pac, Dr. Dre and Snoop (The Chronic), OutKast, Blackstreet, Soundgarden, Notorious BIG, Wu Tang Clan, Lauryn Hill, Weezer, Radiohead, etc. endless list is not only still being discussed but still in the current zeitgeist. It didn’t just define a generation, it provided a voice that reflected how we felt. TL:DR - A generation needed representation and an awesome decision maker monetized real artistry over Lou Perlman’s pedophilia oasis of underage boy bands. I’m not knowledgeable about the girl bands but I can guess it was just as awful if not worse….

Hope you guys explore more of the Seattle bands of this era. Soundgarden and Alice In Chains will blow your mind with their vocals.

I miss when MTV would do these Unplugged shows. It would truly show how amazing the band was and just really bring you down to earth with the music.

This band is incredible!! When listening to Pearl Jam you really need to take in the story they are telling. Black is simply about lost love. He’s so incredibly hurt that his world has turned to black “all the love gone bad turned my world to black”….this band is deep! Lots of great songs!!!

you have no idea, i was obsessed back in the day for years straight. they say you dont hear pearl jam, you feel them and its so true! the song release from the sane album is another that hit me hard cuz i can relate to the story so i can feel his pain in his voice and it blew me away. the first time i heard it, i was hooked. i saw them 3 times, always long and they rock. i still cant listen to release without crying. every time, theresa certain line he says that brings me back to when i lost my mom at 13 all the emotions that i felt then, i feel when i hear this song. i can feel his pain! so im a fan. not as much these last few years. i love greta van fleet rn and ouija macc. lmao! good reaction!

The top 4 Grunge bands from up here, in Washington, were all amazing.
Nobody lives in the moment when they sing better than Eddie Vedder. The whole MTV performance was amazing but to really get a feel for Pearl Jam watching videos like Jeremy (uncensored) and Even Flow or better yet live performances like Porch at PinkPop 92 gives you an idea of the energy they have. These are all off their 1st album in 1991. This was their early days. Thirty years later they are still performing. Their latest album Gigaton speaks to current issues like climate change AND they still rock.

90s grunge was a very interesting time. We were just coming out of 80s glam-rock that was very fluffy and one dimension. Then grunge came in and grunge was raw and emotional and self-deprecating and self realizing. Gen-xers didn't have counseling or ADHD drugs or parents who cared we had therapy through music. LOL
I'm not even ashamed to admit that I bawled my eyes out listening to this last week. It was the first time i had ever seen their Unplugged. Just a very crazy, solid, lightning in a bottle sort of performance.

When to listen to Pearl Jam? When I was seventeen and gas was cheap, getting in the car and just driving for hours. I was an angsty little brat. It seems all we ever did as kids was live in our cars but then again, it was Detroit. This song still makes me feel like going for a drive nearly 30 years later.

Once again I love the reactions you two have, not just because you're having fun and it reminds me of how much I love the music, but because you're comments are so on point. Even if you're not really doing musical breakdowns, it's really nice to hear that you understand the musicianship that goes in and are still truly delighting in what comes out.
It's funny that whoever suggested Pearl Jam started you with unplugged. To me that's like telling someone they'll like coffee and then giving them a cup of decaf. Like...?? I mean, this is a *terrific* performance, but I personally feel its true power comes from contrasting it with the original album or "electrical" live versions of the song. Oh well, that's just me.
Pearl Jam and Tool were getting started around roughly the same time. I was in high school at the time and them, and Nine Inch Nails and Rage Against the Machine and Nirvana and Soundgarden and Alice in Chains and PJ Harvey and Tori Amos and Portisehead and Bjork and on and on... made up that 90s alternative sound that was just unparalleled in intelligence, musicianship, as WELL as raw emotion. The thing about understanding grunge & alternative, though, is it's hard to really grasp its power without grasping its context. Like, you have to understand what this was all a reaction TO, and then you can hear how these acts went on to make their own sound. Men who were boys who got beat up because they'd rather play guitar than football, women who were girls who were assaulted because they were smarter or more daring than boys.
Probably everyone has what they have to say about their favorite music, and this is mine: this music is powerful because the one rule was the artists HAD TO tell the truth. No hiding, no pulling punches, no hinting or getting cute or whatever. They said what they had to say, almost like they would die if they didn't. Sometimes they used words, but not inherently. So when they have something angry and/or painful to say, you really feel it. That's why it's so great. 💕

The song ‘Release Me’ is a song written about Ed’s Father. The interesting fact is Ed knew the man but Ed’s Mom waited until he passed when she told him that “he was your father”

Pearl Jam was part of the soundtrack of my high school years. I was a card carrying member of the Grunge Era along with Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Soul Asylum, Temple of the Dog. Eddie is the only one left all if the other leads in the Grunge Era are dead.

This is your first time hearing them, well you just heard about the best. Pay attention to those lyrics. It's not just the feeling he's expressing so well, it's also the story. A very good one.
One of my all-time favorite songs. Huge Pearl Jam fan since before they filmed this Unplugged. 'Black' is pretty close to Blues, especially when you focus on the lyrics. It's an incredible song, and this is one of the best/emotional performances of it.

I grew up with R&B and hip hop and when I first heard this bands music - the lyrics are true poetry - then you add the music and his voice - misc that all together and man, it blows your mind, changes your life, inspires you, and for me, I wonder, like I do with Marvin Gaye and Teddy Pendergass, what provoked those sudden nuances of sounds/moans? Those sounds are just as important as the actual words. Jae dropping.
