Tool's Timing is so Intricate...It's Like a Dance | REACTION to Pneuma | De & Dre Reacts S:2 E:8

  • We are back with another Tool reaction video. This one is Danny Carey's drum cam during a live show and is playing Pneuma by Tool of course. Tools timing and execution is so intricate that it feels like a choreographed dance. He has to be up there with some of the best drummers of all time given the skill, execution, and passion he shows in this video.

My favorite part of this video was around the 28 minute mark. It summed up Tool in the statements you were making without you meaning to. You were both getting into the philosophy and the psychology of how performing this music can affect the world around you and really showing your intelligence and introspection, then you ended that discussion with "These dudes are crazy, Man". That is Tool in a nutshell. All the intelligence in everything they do but it doesn't mean shit if at the end of the song you don't just say "Wow, that was badass". 21:00 I love that you said that. Danny gets the respect for technical ability , all day every day, everyone knows this man is a PROBLEM on drums lool, but not enough people give him props for the feeling. I honestly think its the fact that he has both the technical AND the feeling that make this guy so great and so loved by so many people ,and these days not just Prog Metal fans, in the past few years I feel like the world is now seeing just hos good Tool are and just how amazing Danny is. As someone who has been a huge Tool fan since 97/98 this is quite nice to witness. Danny's level of feel and groove married with the technicality is mind blowing
Tool's music is hella complex, but there is almost always a groove you can find in there, if its not focused around the snare its usually the cymbals or hi hat.
Listening to a lot of Tool really is an education/foundation in Musical Rhythmical theory but also a case study in songwriting. They manage to play with the instruments and exploit their skill, whilst still managing to frame it withing great songs, that are works of art.
As a musician AEnima has been like a Carrot dangling in front of me, to me that Album is a zenith, something I try and emulate in atmosphere in a lot of my music, or at last take huge inspiration from, and that album marks Tool's emergence into the true sound of the band we all know and love today, but when AEnima came out, no one was doing shit like that

By the way that jersey is customized and says Carey on the back. He’s a big time basketball fan that grew up in Lawrence Kansas and actually got several offers to D1 schools to play hoops but decided pursue something he knew he’d for sure go pro in. In my humble opinion he’s the best living drummer. Their guitar player was also doing special effects for major Hollywood movies like the original Jurassic Park and Independence Day. So all these cats are super talented and multi faceted and took a big risk to quit amazing opportunities in order to pursue this music thing. Also Carrey is over 60 in this video. Keep that in mind. He’s a jazz drummer that happens to be in an amazing progressive hard rock band. Nothing else like these dudes. Plenty of attempted imitations but nobody can pin down the sound cause they’re too good. 😎

Tool is what you get when you put four musicians who are over critical genuses together. When they produce a cd each member lays down their part individually then sends the tracks to the next member. When all of the music is 100% complete it’s sent to Maynard and he then writes the song lyrics to each song.

Danny is also into sacred geometry, his kit is set up accordingly. Been a Tool Fool since "99, you NEVER tire of them. Something new every time you listen. Thanks for this.

Danny Carey is considered one of the best drummers in the world, his nickname is the octopus, because he plays like he has 8 arms, and is classically trained. If you want to learn more about them I would recommend you check out the TooL documentary called From Opiate to Fear Inoculum, it's shows their journey from how they got started and all the things they had to go through to get to this point in their music careers and the evolution in their music it's a really good documentary about them.

These guys are like the highest order of professional athlete. They just are a cut above, for whatever reason. Perhaps it's the soul/spirit which somehow aligns with the body and mind. The results are complete with soul and technical mastery. It's such a hook, these types of individuals - Jordan, Gretzgy, Aretha, Miles Davis, Tom Cruise, Whitney Houston, to name a few. Their energy, will and talent, draw us to them and they inspire our lives, even in their personal suffering because, after all, we're all human beings, flesh and blood. What a story each of us has. The lead singer also lets the rest of the band write the songs before he puts any vocals on them or even has lyrics. They all jam out for a few years and present the tracks to Maynard and put vocals on them. Their earlier albums were different in style because he was more involved in the writing process but it also slowed the process down so he backed away while the rest of the band did their thing. They are all very intelligent as well. Many have PHDs and the guitarist directed most of their videos.

I waited years for this album and it came out the day before my trip from the east coast to the west coast by car. I played this album over and over for well over 2000 miles. This song specifically played as I crossed into the Appalachian mountains in the early morning fog and as I came down the Arizonan mountains in a mist. Both times was a religious experience. Worth the wait man.
The only other rock band that gave me those feelings was Pink Floyd. Alot of fantastic rock music but Tool and Pink Floyd are my cathedrals.
