“Black dudes reacting to Tool” needs to be its own RUclips category
Agree 100%!
It pretty much is 😂
Lol
It's my 2nd favorite youtube genre. Right behind "Villagers trying western foods and media".
Segregation XD
25 seconds in and the pause to try to realize what your brain just got feed, is always my favorite part of a first time reaction. So good.
Right! First timers hearing Tool are never ready
@@sputnikalgrim "This right here is so trippy right now! Are we comin or goin? Who's on first?"
@@brettcloud8550 The only appropriate answer to which is: yes.
I remember first time to..was like being in 70's with stones zeppelin doors n hendrix all rolled up into one
It’s literally trying to drink from a fire hose the first time lol
The fact you guys know about timing signatures already tells me you’re going to end up loving this band. Every music nerd from every genre I’ve ever met ends up loving this band
Big Facts
Also Dream Theater... their heads will 🤯
Yes that's what made me respect them instantly
Watching people hear Tool for the first time, and get it!! Brings me so much joy. I've been following this band since the early 90s. Thanks guys. Keep up the good work
There's few songs that have been created over the last 60 years that are perfect, where the the sum of the parts are creatively unique, technically sound, soulful, emotional and when they come together to form a whole, nothing can be added or taken out to make it better. This song is an example of perfection.
Each member of Tool is a composer in their own right. There will never be another tool!
Thakfully there's lots more than a few. Some bands have entire albums where that's the case.
They don't usually post the lyrics until the record has been out for a bit because they want you to focus on how the music makes you feel first. Maynard is an incredible vocalist and lyricist. The music and the lyrics are fantastic independent of each other.
Tool's lyrics are always important. Always lol. Just as complex as the music itself. These guys can't be compared to other bands. They are their own genre
Agree, but I firmly believe they have to come after a few listens...Real listens... not being distracted multi-tasking listens!
Danny is the metronome and it’s almost a religious experience for real. He’s so tall and has such i range of reach…wow. DUDE. Tool albums are meant to be listened to straight through beginning to end. And the musics is what sets the mood and let’s the lyrics pull you into the story. At the beginning of this song the chill entrance so that the message of the song pulls you into it.
TOOL ARMY RISE UP!!! Keep doing tool man I can tell you guys love them already… I know it’s your first reaction to them I can’t wait for the other songs! I recommend “SCHISM” one of their favorite singles!! You guys are about to travel down the TOOL rabbit hole and I can’t wait!!
Schism is one of my favorites. I want to get a tattoo of the line “Finding beauty in the dissonance”
Means everything to me.
lifelong tool fan and just stumbled on this video. I love this video so much and I love seeing you guys encounter this song and this band. It is so amazing to see. Will be watching y’all more

First, feel it, THEN understand it. 🔥🔥🔥🎸🎤🎶🎵🔥🔥
Crazy thing is they’ve been at it since 92 They don’t drop an album for like a decade or more, but when they did straight up number one on billboard charts. They definitely have a loyal cult following. The lyrics are extremely important, but they aren’t going to spell anything out for the fans. Most of the lyrics are written like poetry, and are specifically arranged in a way that people can apply it to their life. S lot of doubles and triples similar to good hip hop lyricists. Like the name of the song being called the pot. Its the pot calling the kettle black, and the pot that gets you high. Then take into account the hypocrisy in the court system id talking about people getting locked up over pot in the area he lives. I still learn new things about the songs that I’ve been listening to for years. Fun fact: Tom Morello from Rage and Adam Jones were friends in high school in Illinois
Tom Morello's mother was a school teacher there and Adam Jones was in her class. They (Tom and his Mom) talk about it sometimes on his "One Man Revolution" show he does on Lithium.
You gotta read the lyrics while ya listen man. It’s a whole different appreciation when you can relate and connect with the words. Love what yall are doin!
If THIS is only the second rock song you've ever really reacted and listened to.....this is the cream of the crop. This is THE best band for soooooo many reasons

Been listening to Tool since 89 when Opiate came out… Adam Jones is one of the best dynamic guitarist in the world…. It’s all about Dynamics & Evoking Emotion…
I think on your first listen you notice more of the instrumentation and music first, and the lyrics pop out at you sometimes. The lyrics clear up when you listen to it a few times. I like it
My first introduction to Tool was the music video for Schism that played on MTV when they were still about music videos, and ever since then, Tool & A Perfect Circle have become routine listening 🙌
Loving the reaction, WAY more thoughtful than most reaction videos... just subscribed. If you liked Tool, the lead singer went on to lead A Perfect Circle and currently Puscifer. I'd love to know what you guys think about mumble rap, since you were saying you value lyrics along with a good sound.
Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan also formed a band with guitarist Billy Howerdel in 1999 named A Perfect Circle.
I so enjoy watching people (esp musicians) hear TOOL for the first time. Most of all, when other drummers hear Danny Carrey and you see them counting with both hands out :) I've been a fan from the first listen of their album "Opiate". the lyrics were almost like another instrument and I didn't really need them and once I started to hear them I got even more from the song and the music. 💯👏👏👏
Maynard has said that the music always comes first and the he writes his lyrics based on how the music makes him feel
1:46 (pause) .........hol up! 😂 such an absolutely perfect and, honestly, the one and ONLY reaction acceptable; no one forgets their first time. Tool still out here just swinging around on the spiral, as per usual 🤙🏼
You would enjoy Pneuma by Tool, watching Danny Carey play the drums is just insane
I know this video is old but ive got two songs that you guys should check out. One by tool, and one by "a perfect circle" which is another band that the singer of Tool is in. The singers name is Maynard James Keenan. Both of these songs have great lyrics that make you think (as most songs with Maynard James Keenan make you do.)
Tool - Right in two
A perfect circle - Pet
Wow. 1st time watcher. Enjoyed your reaction. Really talented group oguys. Pneuma *docused on DC* Live, really cool. Thanks again for your time and i will definitely check out more.
If you like this, oh my God are you in for a treat. Y'all barely scratched the surface of what is the greatness of the band Tool. For context, I'm a 51-year-old black man who is steeped in multiple genres of music. That being said, go see them live, it is indescribable. But before you do, get more familiar with their body of work. I'll add this as well. The lyrics are relevant. For example, this particular song is a protest about the prosecution of marijuana. In the last line, the singer says "Ganja please".
Start with "Undertow" and go from. And, if that's not enough of an invitation, Danny Carey, the drummer, is a phenomenon. Check out the video of him playing a track called "Pneuma". Mind-blowing. I thoroughly enjoyed this video, and I look forward to more...
The drummer is doing some 3/4 or 6/8 with some 4/4 and he keeps them coming together on the 12!!!! Sick fkn drummer.
The lyrics are awesome, they are a metaphor for the corruption and problems in the judicial system and society
This song is about Robert Plant's comments about Tool stealing Led Zeppelin's sound. When in reality Led Zeppelin are known and proven plagiarist.
"The pot calling the kettle black"
"Kangaroo done hung the jury with the innocent"
A kangaroo court is a mock court with a predetermined outcome. Led Zeppelin made millions off stolen blues musicians and payed them hush money and settled out of court.
"Weeping shades of cozened indigo"
=You're crying about stolen blues.
When you said that you must've been high.
"Eye hole deep in Muddy Waters"
It a double entendre. He's saying he's full of shit but also calling on blues musician Muddy Waters.
Normally the lyrics dont matter that much to me in a song, at least at first. It's there to fit the groove and the overall sound. But with TOOL, or anything Maynard, the lyrics are incredibly deep and meaningful! They add a whole new level of depth to the music when you understand the importance, structure and where the lyrics come from. These boys are some smarty pants musicians, so enjoy the music now, dive in to the lyrics after! Really good reaction btw!
Also, if you want some smooth but amazing music, react to Tremonti - marching in time!
Exactly! 46 and 2 changed my life! 🤯

One theory is he is answering to Led Zeppelin's guitarist Jimmy Page who said that Tool was ripping off Zeppelin's style with their music and imagery and Maynard was calling him a hypocrite because Zeppelin has been sued many times for ripping off some of their most famous songs from other artists, especially blues artists.
i feel this was about tool EVERY time i hear the same song for the 1000th time
I've always said they compose music. They don't just write songs it's something more complex and rich like differences between milk and butter

Y'all are great
Blown away yall counting Tool time sigs. Wowza. ❤
Yall have such a good understanding of music. Glad to be a new sub
Just a snip into the song, "so you're weeping shades of cozened indigo, got lemon juice up in your eye" he was talking about the people in his mother's church who didn't weep for her until she passed away. Cozened indigo being forced tears with lemon juice.
That Jurassic Park comment was kind of funny, the guitarist's first job was working on that movie as one of the dinosaur animators.
I don’t understand why none of these reactors do a quick read of the Wikipedia page prior to listening. Knowing more about the song prior to listening to it can unlock so much perception.
The lyrics with Tool do matter far more than most. It's very clever poetry, with deep meanings. The pot is the drug and the pot calling the kettle black. The lost art of allowing the listener to form his own opinion rather than most cut and dry songs allow with no mystery. Black Kettle was an Indian that was wronged, so the story goes even deeper.
The Bass is the guitar part and the guitar part is the bass. It helps understand what they are doing.
Bruhhh the lyrics are crazy - His lyrics are like reading poetry... In this song, he is calling out the hypocrites that demonize drug addicts or fallen souls. Drug addicts lie and deceit, but so do the Lawyers in the court room. People get up on a soapbox and try to spread their gospel about what everyone is doing is wrong, but "THEY ARE STANDING IN A FLIMSY HOUSE OF CARDS"
Love that you all picked up the call out in the verse he talks about pissing on the black kettle.
Welcome to Kangaroo Court :)

It's about government hypocrisy, corruption, and brutality; specifically, in the context of marijuana laws in the United States which lends itself to "the pot" analogy. Excellent content. I'm an instant subscriber after seeing your reactions.
I've always found Tool's messages to be somewhat Postmodern. I've never gone out of my way to read the lyrics, and generally have no idea what the songs are truly about, but when I have stumbled across lyric videos/explanation videos on RUclips, I'm always astounded by the lyrical genius of Maynard. This particular song isn't one of his best lyrically, but some are next level shit.

Funny thing is the intro of this song is standard 4/4 time signature. The accents just aren't on the 1st and the 3rd.
There's no 5/4, but there are 3/4 and 6/4 parts.
Still 20+ years later, watching people discover TOOL brings me goosebumps, and brings that same exciting feeling to old fans.
Ive been a tool fan forever and these reactions are such a strange phenomenon. I don't know why but I agree with you that it is such a satisfying feeling watching people discover them for the first time.
Tool army still going strong! 🔧💪
💯
From my understanding, the guitarists play around and come up with stuff. They then pass it off to Danny Carey, the drummer for him to create what it needs. Then it goes to Maynard, the singer. He gives it the rest of what it needs.
@ashleyreeb yes, i heard Maynard say this in an interview. It seems like an intuitive way to go about it, but apparently kind of rare. Definitely works for them though!
Those of us that are iniated into the Tool fandom love watching these first time reactions because deep down we all wish we could hear Tool for the first time again. 10/10 analysis guys you got my sub!
I was agreeing with you until I realized hearing the opiate EP was an amazing first, then undertow really amped that up. Then Aenima was like hearing them for the first time all over again. Then Lateralus was like hearing them for the first time again. 10000 day proved they could make something better than Lateralus. Then Fear Innoculum (at least half the album) made me think it was a whole new band. But yeah, to hear Tool for the first again would be amazing!

Definitely listen to a Tool song first without worrying too much about what Maynard is singing bc he means his vocal performance to be part of the music as a whole and not on top of it. But to not go back and read the lyrics is to miss out on the GENIUS of Maynard’s lyricism.
The Pot for example has many layers about hypocrisy in general (The pot calling the kettle black) the hypocrisy of the war on drugs (prosecutors going after pot smokers when they themselves are the real criminals-“fucking hypocrites!”) and the hypocrisy of governments ruling when they are themselves corrupt.
Read the lyrics after listening to a Tool song and then listen to it again! It will be worth your while. Genius all around!!
Very much so. He doesnt write lyrics until he's heard the band play the song. So it's very much a part of it, and not just something that he had in his head without sound.
what questionme2 said. Maynard tends to write in double, or even triple, entendres - there are usually two or more "meanings" to the lyrics, just beyond the musical contribution to the overall song. Its good to process it, and no shame if the first listen you can't really figure out what the "point" is.
And the “high” is, ‘high on your soapbox or pedestal’, and being high on the feeling of being up there.
@@tempsitch5632 i feel like it is also refering to the hypocrisy of a judge or a lawyer who would ruin someone's life over a minor drug incident while they themselves are high on some drug.
I think it can very well be taken literally aswell as metaphorically.
It’s a crime to overlook Tool lyircs. Point blank.
Eyeballs deep in muddy water is a reference to Dantes inferno. It was the punishment for hypocrites. The song is essentially about a judge who was extremely tough sentencing minor drug offenses, was later caught with drugs and was crying for leniency and forgiveness. " Cohen indigo", " lemon juice up in your eyes" is an allusion to fake, crocodile tears. There is so much wrapped into this song.
"Eyeballs deep in muddy waters" is mentioned by Maynard to mean "Eyeballs deep in the muddy waters of materialism", as a statement against Christianity, as they claim that "Through the faith, we transcend materialism, even the material world itself", yet here we are with all these convenient Christians all wrapped up in material things, and judging others for those same problems. Basically, this entire song is based around criticizing Christianity. It could be a gentle nod at Dante's Inferno, considering Maynard isn't opposed to occult things like in Lateralus, but this is directly a critique on Christianity.
Then Cozen Indigo is basically the fake tears that Christians give each other in forgiveness, knowing well they don't really care. This is furthered by "Kangaroo be stoned. He's guilty as the government", which refers to the corruption and dishonesty of major figures in Christianity, and MAY even be accusing Jesus. He's saying the major heads of Christianity that somehow were given the power to judge others, though the Bible prohibits it, have a rigged court and condemn men just as guilty as they are.
Ah is THAT where the muddy eyeballs come from! Well sleuthed! I can actually see the picture from Doré's Dante's Inferno 😊👍
cozened indigo but ye crocodile tears is the vibe there
The last sentence here sums up the lions share of their whole catalog
Oh dear. Following my reply to you (and I DO recall that pic in Dore's pics of the Inferno) I double checked the punishments for hypocrites and it's not the muddy eyeballs - hypocrites wear lovely clothes in hell, but the clothes are weighed down underneath with lead, iron etc, so it's really a slog for them to move, and that's the punishment. Damn!
I wonder what the muddy eyeballs come from then? Research needed!

Tool uses insane poly-rhythms that constantly shift throughout their pieces in addition to frequent key changes and discordant harmonies. It is super complex and interesting music. And a lot of their lyrics are pure poetry. They are a highly technical band and they are very clean and precise at the same time. They really sound like this live too. And they improvise on top of it. They're not for everyone, but they are damn good.

The lyrics and how Maynard uses his voice.... it's the 4th instrument of the band. It's insane..... This song is about hypocrisy.... and it's beautifully written.
Well said
What even the majority of tool fans never think about, because they are very vocal about their preferences & things they notice in the compositions, is what both you & me point out. The fourth instrument is absolutely Maynard's voice. From his growls to his vibrato, movingly powerful screams to stabbing accusational crescendos. I get more emotion from the combination of the burden-laying bass licks tied to the heart thru the drum cadence, being whipped by the shearing guitar power chords in time with the lash of a scream or yelled lyric than from any other rock/metal combination. So whomever lays down the first layer that the others play off of has the easiest job (during composition) I'd think it would be the bassist, it is just so heavy & angry. I feel the drums are layered on top of the fat bass. Then the guitarist finds a rhythm & chasms to chop into. His fills rebuild a new sense of emergency then the drums build up your heart rate & whack! Guitar chords chop down to help you release the blood pressure before swapping to rhythm again as the lyrics take your new emotion for another ride.
Maynard's voice is incredible 🤘
This song is about hypocrisy, the title refers to the phrase "The Pot calling the Kettle black". It uses a masterful weaving of metaphors and turns of phrase combined with insanely technical musicianship. A true masterpiece.

This is a really good one for a BRAND NEW fan to listen to as well. As much as I love a Lateralus or parabol/parabola, it can be a lot if you're used to shorter more conventional songs. Tool composes the instrumental first, give it to Maynard to add his vocals to it. Maynard is also the lead singer in Pucsifer and A Perfect Circle if you want to check them out too. ❤️
You single? Vibing your words
Danny Carey is something else. It’s like wailing on those drums is as natural as breathing to him. And Justin chancellor is such a master on the bass and Adam with the guitar… sheesh… have you ever tried to play a tool song? The tabs are nuts. Nothing about that band is simple. MJK has a vocal range and writing skills that are just unreal. May as well try to play Dragonforce. 😂
LOL!!! same thing i thought, being a bass player, but you beat me to it!! :)
Should check out clutch, one of my buddies said it's like a country/blues rock version of tool 😂😂😂 ironically it's kinda accurate
Brace yourself, Tool is a whole vibe no matter what song you listen too. It’s all brilliant
I’m so pissed I waited until I was almost 50 to discover them. I have to be careful because I find myself closing my eyes and vibing while driving.
Subbed for Tool and Rage Against the machine! Your journey into these two bands will surely be fun to see. You two are in for one hell of a ride! Spiral out 🌀
And "Keep Going." \m/
Not to mention that Adam Jones went to school with Tom Morello. I seem to remember Tom's mother was Adam's teacher.
In regards to the question, “are you meant to understand the lyrics?”
Yes, but not always easily at first. This song came out when you still bought the CD and had the lyrics printed off in the cover art to follow along.
Tool is a great band to follow in that their music hits different depending on your mood. Sometimes you only need the vibe, like when you’re working out. Other times the lyrics really cut deep and you need them from of you until you have them seared in your mind.
Very well put, and so true.
This song came out when you still bought the CD and had the lyrics printed off in the cover art to follow along.
also stereoscopic glasses built into the album case. i still have that one in a box somewhere. i also had the aenima one with the lenticular cover, but sadly that one got stolen.
“I think they’re doing completely different things”
Exactly that. Tool use a lot of polyrhythms and polymeters in their songs. You’ll often find that the drums are playing one time signature, whilst the guitar, bass and vocals are alternating in other time signatures.
Pneuma is a stunning example of this, from their latest album. Especially towards the end, when the guitar, bass, and drums all drift in an out of sync with one another. It’s honestly hypnotic to tune into.
The Pot is one of my all time favourite tunes though. Such a great choice for an entry into the world of Tool.
Pneuma is amazingly hypnotic, Right In Two is another one IMO
Best thing about Tool with their polyrhythms is how many "time signatures" you can hear in a song like this while the entire thing is actually in 4/4.
Watching the video of Danny Carey playing Pneuma live gave me a whole new respect for his skill, and I already thought he was one of the best drummers alive today.
"Pot" the gateway drug.
Tool songs are my favorite Tool songs.
Even the ones that don't hit on the first listen. I just need that song to hit in a different moment on a playlist.
I've never found a genuinely skippable Tool song.
Tool is a band formed by extremely precise musicians that focus on unique time signatures and riffs blended with extraordinary solo performances from the rhythm and percussion sections. The lyrical ability and creativeness from the vocalists is the icing on the cake.
Wrote a paper in college about Tool and I had a section dedicated to their unique time signatures. How they change them up throughout the song and how different instruments are doing different time signatures at the same time. My professor didn't like that, said "that's not how music works" and insisted I change it. I didn't and got marked off. I'm convinced he never even attempted to listen to Tool before grading my paper.

I lended a copy of a Porcupine Tree CD to my sister once. She had it playing in her car when she picked up her choir director and immediately she picked up on the tempo changes and odd time signatures. It’s not her genre but she recognized the difficulty and the talent it takes. Tool is in the same vein. Your instructor just doesn’t understand music.
Yes absolutely, but not so much so in the beginning of their career though. They definitely grew into the extremely precise complex creatures that they became. I mean they had it in the beginning, just not as much
I wanted to stand and applaud like six times during this reaction. You guys picked up on everything and had so much insight into the track just on your first listen. This is what music reactions should be! Keep it up!
They are clearly fellow musicians/ artists . This band is tailor made for music needs to geek out on lol
@@mookiestewart3776 hell yeah. And here we are haha
This is one of my favorite Tool songs! The song is about hypocrisy, All the little sayings about the pot calling the kettle black. Also the Kangaroo court is like your guilty before the facts are giving out or at all. All Tool songs have a deep meaning thats why I love them so much
You can literally hear a kangaroo hop in the guitar, you can fucking see it
This whole album is about Maynard’s mother suffering for 10,000 days before her illness took her life
I thought Kangaroo Court was a jail/prison style of judgment and justice.
@@scapito A kangaroo court is basically when a group arbitrarily judged people with little to no actual evidence and typically one that doesn't apply the law correctly (ie All Stoners are Lazy, Metal Heads are all devil worshippers ect)
Schism, Lateralus, Jambi, Right in Two... tbh, you can just listen to their whole discography and not be disappointed!
Right in two is my go to when I need a tool fix. Ridiculously amazing
Maynard was a stand up comic before joining Green Jello then Tool. His lyrics are sometimes comical when people think they are serious. He’s educated and intelligent
That’s dope as hell
I don't know about comical, but certainly ironic. You won't get it if you take yourself too seriously.
This isn't just rock music. This is tool and when you listen to tool you're going down a rabbit hole. My friends welcome to the rabbit hole of tool. Singers name is Maynard James Keenan. It's drummer. Is Danny Carey? Their time signatures are very difficult to identify, but I love that you appreciate their talent and the way that they put their music together. It's so amazing. I've been a fan since the '90s
Danny is the probably one of the best drummers ever
I only discovered Tool in 2022. I’m into Psy trance and techno. But they are awesome. Rabbit hole here I come.
@@belldracka Bro if you like psytrance i understand where you come from, tool is very synonymous to psychedelics in general. Right in Two is a great song if you havent heard it yet. The tabla solo is insane
Not only is tool just rock it's just grunge power cords.
@@Randomfliper speaking of tabla... everything danny carey knows of the tabla (to extent he does at least) can be attributed to his lessons from tabla master ALOKE DUTTA featured on salival (tool boxset, 2000)'s version of "pushit" (live). that's aloke. go ahead, youtube the alien. oh yeah, duh! ...yeah, he's an alien. (considered "fifth member of the band" - likely due to touring that version of "pushit" at the time)
actually. "pushit (live)" ...is a good recommendation for reaction video i haven't seen much of
Maynard is arguably one of the best lyricists of all time. The words do matter.
Not to all.
Maynard is great but mike patton eats him for breakfast.

@@crankfastle8138 I’m a huge mike Patton fan but a lot of his lyrics are complete gibberish, he’s admitted it himself he cares more about the sound of the words than what they mean, he wipes the floor with Maynard as a singer though
“I can almost understand what the guitar is saying!”
Welcome to TOOL.
I especially like Dre's comment about how before, he assumed that anyone could play rock. As someone that grew up with rock/metal, I always thought the same about rap. Once I opened my mind the world of music opened up. Now, it's not uncomon for me to have Tool, Pharcyde, J5, and Iron Maiden all queued up. Continue using music to connect us as people. Respect.
I’ve tried liking Tool since they came out, but there was always something about them that was elusive; I recognized the genius I was hearing but I couldn’t feel it.
Then, about a month ago for some obscure reason, my brain decided that what was hidden is now visible, and it all came together for me. I watched the reaction compilation for Lateralus, and the collective stunned silence afterward was in sync with my own.
@@jburt779 they activated your kundalini ✌️
To me as a fan of rap and metal there's still a huge difference in difficulty.
If only because Rap artists often have many many people working on lyrics and the beat and all that.
Most metal bands I'm into basically write 95-100% of the lyrics and music and play the instruments.
Both have unique skill sets for sure.
Jurassic 5 is sick, can't believe you mentioned that. Apologies if you mean Jackson 5 haha
❤
Maynard is probably one of the most gifted lyricist in a generation. Very intelligent, and intentional. The great thing about Tool is that they are 4 uniquely talented guys, all doing their thing, and coming together. Where the sum is greater than the parts.
Excellent summary
So many don't know he only writes the lyrics once he has the music before him. This band has no comparison..
Perfectly said.
Yeah it's surprising how independent they are.. I mean Adam, Justin and Danny put the composition together and then Maynard comes in with lyrics later. But it all sounds and flows like it was meant to be. If it works for them, who are we to wave out fingers 😂
Oh also, I recommend always listening to tool headphones (so many little details you miss otherwise) and always read lyrics to get the full affect. Enjoy guys!
Every single member of this band is a genius at what they play and Maynard is a poet. The lyrics are important. As important as every perfect note they play.
TOOL is a band with a lead drummer and a rhythmic vocalist, IMO. The interesting part too is the band creates the music first then the singer comes in and writes the lyrics.
Incredible description. Danny Carey is a mastermind on the kit.
Hence the 13 year hiatus between '10,000 Days' and Fear Inoculum...... These dudes reviewing this video have yet to comprehend the depth of TOOL. THEY'RE the MOST well-thought-out-satisfying band of all time. It takes A LOT of time ⏲️ to appreciate this band..... It's "EYE BALLS 👁 DEEP IN MUDDY WATERS" BTW...... Maynard is a lyrical genius not only with what he says but how he sings it. Please show me another band that doesn't have one bad (skipable) song! I've listened to their every song at least 90 times and every song, every time, it gets better.... No other band has a fan that can say that so suck it Megadeath!
Coming from a drummers perspective, I couldn’t agree more, and I have the utmost respect and love for MJK, as well as Adam and Justin! His lyrics are truly incredible, especially considering they are done after the music is completed by the rest of the band, but to have a master like Danny behind that unbelievable kit, he will always be the main reason I go see them every time they are in the Philly area. There is a reason they call him the human octopus!
If I were ever to write music, I'd definitely have my band mates create the instrumentals first and then come up with lyrics but that's just how my mind works most effectively
I honestly think, especially when you see Tool in concert, the whole band works off of Justin Chancellor's bass.
Tool is amazing, glad to see you guys getting into some rock and metal. I bet you'd dig Schism, Lateralus, Forty Six & 2, or H.

I vote forty six & 2 for they lyrics alone but H is my favorite tool song of all time that part where MJK says "The snake is drowned, I can see the look your eyes. My fear beings to fade recalling all of the times." Still to this day sends a chill up my spine.
"I could almost understand what the guitar is saying!"
My dude, that is the BASS solo. Tool has the best rhythm section of any rock band not named Rush. :D
As much as Tool is incredible musically tho, Maynards lyrics is equally fantastic. This album is mostly dedicated to his mother's passing after 10,000 days of illness and paralysis, with Wings for Marie pts 1 & 2 being the culmination of that theme. I recommend checking it out, but maybe bring tissue.
Don't forget "Judith" from A Perfect Circle.
You can listen to any band you want to in this van……..as long as it’s Rush…..
Wings of Marie part 2 is so fucking beautiful
@@CentralFloridaBowHunting lol nice reference
Rush? 🤔🙄🤦♂️
Remember this was before Internet, we bought into the music, the artistry, and lyrics. Buying a CD and pulling out the sleeve with all the lyrics and looking at all the art was like opening a super cool present. Sitting in my room with headphones on just looking over the sleeve over and over again! 😊❤️
Amen. I can remember when audioslave came out with that badass flame album and my dad bought it. We all sat down and took it out the case. Played it on surround sound. I'm building my cd collection up. Imagine what it will be like in 25 years. I'll be about 52. Probably not cds
🎯💯
This was released in 2006. We had the internet then.
@@jimidave6281 UUUGH BUT THEY DIDNT RELEASE ON ITUNES.
I remember being a kid wanting to download this album so bad- because I heard it on the radio. But it WASNT AVAILABLE ONLINE.
TOOL ended up being the first CD I set out to buy as a kid.
This comment took me right back.
Miss that!!!
There’s no band like Tool.. the lyrics.. the timing… everything is different than ANY band you will ever hear
Which is irritating as fuck, tbh. It's brutal wanting to find something similar but knowing you just never will. And I've been looking for, what, 25 years?
They sound amazing live as well. Just saw them for the first time in Manchester, NH on 11/13/23. Been a fan since the mid 90s.
@@TR-ut3yhoh yeah. And after hearing them live you can hear how these recordings can fill a huge arena. The bass and intensity reverberates like nothing else you'll ever hear. Still have vivid memories of Sober on their '02 tour
You guys are gonna like Tool. Not only is Maynard one of the best lyricists, they'll do crazy things like base a song around the Fibonacci sequence.
According to Maynard that was not planned. The song just came out that way which if true makes you wonder how special they really are to naturally input the most natural sequence found in the world.
Their live performance of Sober is absolutely incredible.
Indeed.
On god
One of the best ever
Top bands I’ve seen live. 95 at the shrine.. they sound just like they do live as you do from a cd. And they had a shemale strip on stage while we laying one song lol
I don't know if I could cry like that Infront of that many people
When I have a bad day at work or just am feeling a little off, I always check new tool reaction videos. Seeing people vibe to tool for the first time cheers me up immediately
If you do Tool again, I recommend The Grudge. It has something for both y'all: musically perfect and a tremendous message in the lyrics.
EDIT: A note about understanding the lyrics. It just takes time and practice. I fully understand all these songs where there's screaming and such, because I listen to it everyday. But if I flip on the radio and listen to a pop song, I have no clue what they are singing.
TOOL is definitely well known for using unusual and changing time signatures. Glad you appreciated this!
Also, if you appreciated that scream, listen to The Grudge by TOOL.
