For me this song is about relationships. Family, friends, lover or kids. We forget how to communicate. How to find compassion and empathy. We know the pieces fit but we got too comfortable. To the point that the math isn’t mathing. It becomes a schism. A divide.

the way TooL writes their music: the music comes first, the lyricist doesn't get to listen until the whole album is completed and final. Then he gets to take his time and writes all lyrics from scratch based on the music and how it inspires and influences him. And just like he (vocalist) doesn't get an input on the music, the band doesn't get a say on the lyrics or vocal melody. This is a long and slow process, but can't argue with the results.

Not only is Tool an amazing band, but they introduced me to some things that has helped me be more self analytical. To see things in a different way. I never liked bands like Pink Floyd and stuff until Tool taught me to sit, relax, and ride the music. I became a much deeper thinker. I tell people that the band Korn was the band that made me not feel so alone as a teenager. Tool set things in motion to get me to work through my problems. When you grow up around shallow, and violent people you're not even aware that you can be deep about anything. The feeling you get when the light bulb lights up, and that inner door ooens can be overwhelming.

That's what Tool does best. They're super talented musicians and they have a super vocalist and lyricist in Maynard, but it's their genius, their creativity, the sounds, notes and rhythms they think of and choose and combine together that make you "feel." Tool themselves are a psychedelic experience. Lights OFF, Volume UP and hold on. Always say my first highs were listening to Supertramp's Even in the Quietest Moments, Fools Overture and of course Floyd's Dark side of the Moon in my bedroom after bedtime with my dad's giant Realistic (pretty sure, know the record player and rest of the system was that) headphones. Took my 10 or so yo mind places not possible with eyes open or any distractions. TOOL is PERFECTION for this. So yeah I know the guys played around with that stuff, but the music no doubt was crafted in sobriety, it wouldn't be so perfect otherwise. Don't get me wrong, some of the sounds may have originated or been seeded during a trip but put to music with a clear mind

It's about a relationship that has ended, whether it's a woman or a close friend. A "Schism" is a split or division between strongly opposed sections or parties, caused by differences in opinion or belief. And Maynard is trying to analyze that, where it split, how to put it back together. Something you would only worry or think about if it was someone you really cared for.

  • @fishblades
    @fishblades Год назад +8

From what I've gathered from interviews the vision comes from the musicians just hanging out and jamming alot. It's part of the reason the songs shift and change so much because they are coming up with new things as they play. I guess most bands do this but tool never goes in saying this is the song we are making. They just play and find things they like and try to surprise each other. They have actually set up a camera and streamed some of these sessions. Maynard comes in later with the vocals and he always does a perfect job matching the tone of the song even though with these songs it's incredibly difficult.
Tool is a real band. Every person is important and you can hear everyone at all times, I've always been impressed with their mix. Even live the levels are perfect. Try finding the bass in a Metallica song, almost impossible. I never truly appreciated the bass until tool, not counting flea or less claypool.
I've heard a few tool fans complain a bit that some of the songs are getting unfocused and are just extended jam sessions. They are few and far between but I can see it with a few of their songs.

As for the dancers in the videos, yes they played a huge role in the visual artistry if the band and were very much chosen intentionally by the band to do so. I turned everyone onto them including my teachers in middle school; one of them i actually ran into about 3 years later at a Tool concert. The late 80's were a damn good hybrid of things to come with bands like Queensryche and Faith no More blowing up. The early 90's were such a diverse land for new music with Pantera and many others breaking the mold. I sadly can never relive hearing that music for the first time again, hence i love watching reaction video's of people now coming upon such great bands.

Excellent video, guys. It's always a trip watching people experiencing this band's work for the first time.
To answer your question about how involved the band was in this video; very. Adam Jones the guitarist of Tool has directed all of the band's music videos since their third album ("Schism" included). He's also very hands on regarding album art and the mutli-media elements that play during their live performances.
Welcome to the club, I hope you enjoy your journey, what you receive from it and where it takes you.
    Cheers!!

Another quick note on guitarist Adam Jones; prior to forming Tool, he was making his living working for Stan Winston's studio, which happened to be the premiere visual effects for the film industry. Jones worked on creature and makeup fx on films like "Terminator 2", "Jurassic Park", "Edward Scissorhands", "Batman Returns" and a bunch of other films with great practical effects and makeup. Unsurprisingly, Jones has designed all the character makeup and production elements of the band's music videos. Talented dude.

Tool is pure art made with intentional reasons. I like both types. It's a ride revisting to purify. Chaos and order somehow the best can merge both.

Their bassist (Paul) left the band during the recording of the previous album and the new bassist (Justin) wrote the bassline that inspired the song. Paul went on to be a high school teacher and later start a new band as well. This album was theorized to be written with the Fibonacci sequence in mind, which many learn about in high school.

The algorithm love showing me reaction videos to Schism, so congrats to being the next fantastic Content Creators that I've had the pleasure to discover.
Tool is a fantastic band large in part due to their abnormal and unusual, alternating time signatures. With the song Schism, it starts out in a 12/8 signature flowing into 5/8 before shifting into 7/8. These transitions are done so seamlessly, or so harsh and deliberate, that it keeps an unnerving, haunting, and lilting feel through out the track.
Fun fact: the title song from this album, Lateralus, incorporates the Fibonacci sequence through the structure of the lyrical meter and time signature. They truly were are a band who thought on another level.

Drawing line where division is not necessary. Done from ego we divide ourselves. How many ways people divide themselves on without even considering that it makes more sense when both are true.
We are so much stronger when we come together. De and Dre reacting to Tool is a good example.
