I was looking for this comment before I posted myself 😂. Also, the line "Vicariously I, live while the whole world dies. Much better you than I" goes pretty deep. I think Maynard is saying that we live comfortably through entertainment so we don't have to live in discomfort. Afraid to take risks for fear of failure, or worse... Death! Therefore providing meaning to the "much better you than I" I could be wrong lol.
Yeah, news of tragedy/violence/bloodshed is what sells, but not because ppl want to do anything about it. It sells because we can feel bad for a second, then change the channel and quit thinking about it. It's entertainment.
he's also speaking to our willingness to endorse the violent enforcement of social norms, and atrocities we endorse around the world by upholding this current empire. It's easier to glorify war and violence when you're far from the front lines.
Fun Fact about their AMAZING guitarist Adam Jones: Jones was offered a film scholarship but declined and chose to move to Los Angeles to study art and sculpture. His interest shifted to film, and he began to work as a sculptor and special effects designer, where he learned the stop motion camera techniques he would later apply in Tool's music videos, such as "Sober", "Prison Sex", "Stinkfist", "Ænema", "Schism", "Parabola", and "Vicarious". He graduated in 1987. After graduation, he went to work at Rick Lazzarini's Character Shop. During the next two years, he worked on the TV show Monsters. He designed and fabricated a Grim Reaper makeup and a zombie head on a spike (later used in Ghostbusters II) among others. After that, he went to Stan Winston's special effects workshop, where he worked on Predator 2, sculpting a unique-looking skull for the Predator's spaceship interior. Jones worked on several other films in Hollywood doing makeup and set design, including Jurassic Park, Batman Returns, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Dances with Wolves, and Ghostbusters II. He did the "Freddy Krueger in the womb" makeup for A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, as well as work for A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. He also worked on commercials for salad dressing (never aired), Olympic Paints & Stains (Albert Einstein makeup), and Duracell (boxers and taxicabs
Insofar as I understand, this song is a critique of modern news media and how they sensationalize, profitize and get people addicted to the idea of violence. in truth, the best way to listen to Tool is literally in order of every song released. it’s pretty much a journey of self. Early Tool albums didn’t have lyrics in the album art, and looking up lyrics online wasn’t like what it is now; meaning, the internet really wasn’t a thing for us until Tool’s 4th album. So glad you're open to the rabbit hole. You are wise to realize it's about experiences. Broadly and in general T00L's oldest stuff is much shorter and angrier than their newest stuff, so depending on your mood you can keep finding more to enjoy. Thankyou!
As I look through this I see you haven’t read the comments yet. I haven’t seen one Wings for Maria comment. Listen to part 1 then part 2, it’s like Parabolas transition. It’s probably there best song and it’s imo the greatest song of all time. Some people can’t listen to it because of the meaning it has for them. You hit the nail on the head: there is not one track that sounds the same. Pnuema is a masterpiece, especially the drum cam if you want to see the Octopus (Danny) at work 🐙 loving the reactions!
The meaning behind the song is the concerns that us as American have an obsession with the television and "living vicariously" through television characters. It also touches upon the American obsession with violence in television. A very psychological view on how we as a culture tend to need to watch violence to feel better about our own lives, and how when a war occurs(the Iraq war) we tend to need to watch "while the whole world dies"
Loving these reaction videos. This song is mainly about when the US was in a war with the middle east after 911 when CNN had live broadcasts live from the battle ground. We were all watching the war 24/7 for months.
Just found you this morning, Love Your intro Msg Sooo much!! I shared you with my Mother, Brother & fried during "46 & 2", cuz they all needed to hear that! So glad you're open to the rabbit hole. You are wise to realize it's about experiences. Broadly and in general T00L's oldest stuff is much shorter and angrier than their newest stuff, so depending on your mood you can keep finding more to enjoy. Thankyou!
I love your beautiful spirit and your love for music. This is so fun to watch you discover new music and love it. ❤
You crushing the Tool reactions
They're like zeppelin. I'm so glad a hip hop man can get into something new and different.
If you have or had a strong relationship with your mother than it will hit harder than all these songs. Give it a listen
Favorite line is “credulous at best, your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of men”
Great reactions to TOOL, don’t always take MJK literally, he’s a Genius! My daughter and I have seen them 5 times over the years, Greatest Band Ever!! Spiral out
You hit the nail on the head: there is not one track that sounds the same. Pnuema is a masterpiece, especially the drum cam if you want to see the Octopus (Danny) at work 🐙 loving the reactions!
Love your charisma brother, keep letting your light shine.
Definitely need great ear gear to truly appreciate Tool
That talking you heard in the other ear is the news reporting on tragedy
Yes sir today is a GREAT DAY 💯💯
Thank you JT🙏🏼, your positivity at the open and closing of each of your videos is getting me through some tough times. Much love, brother🤘🌀!!
And Maynard/Lead singer does that layering internationally! And Next Lateralus or Schism.
he's VICARIOUSLY living through the media
Loving these reaction videos. This song is mainly about when the US was in a war with the middle east after 911 when CNN had live broadcasts live from the battle ground. We were all watching the war 24/7 for months.
Just found you this morning, Love Your intro Msg Sooo much!! I shared you with my Mother, Brother & fried during "46 & 2", cuz they all needed to hear that! I watched all your Tool Videos now, I Strongly Suggest you check out Tool's Singer Maynard's side projects, A Perfect Circle's "Disillusioned" & Puscifer's "The Mission", Maynard singing with Milla Jovovich!! So Awesome!
You should do Schism. You will not regret it.
Something tells me, you would LOVE the drum solo in 46&2
have you listened to ÆNIMA yet? Or Prison sex or Sober or one of my all time favorites Lateralus? if you do listen to Lateralus you should google (fibonacci sequence) first, if you don't know what that is. it really displays the genius that Maynard is.
Remember that songs about( especially in this genre ) are not endorsements of whatever they are mentioning. The common examples I can think of are " Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen or "Every Breath You Take " by The Police.
Lost Keys(Blame Hofman)/Rosetta Stoned....please!
the sound quality of the actual albums are so much better than the internet audio files let’s all pitch in together to get him a whole set of tool albums…. I’ll contribute
So here for it!! Spiral out my friend!!
He's speaking on the prospective of human beings, he's not wishing that ish on anyone.
Gotta do the Pneuma drum cam video of Danny Carey next if you like the drums! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
🔥FIRE‼️🌋
through the experience of another person…at a good safe distance.
To be honest one of my favourite tool songs comes from their first EP. Its called Sweat. Its pretty short but its fun as hell.
5 Tool songs. Cmon now get on that shi!!!❤
vicarious honestly is one of my favs.... i know its about humans need to see bad stuff happen..but it also reminds me of forensic files... one day i wanna do a cool video of synchronized clips from that show that match the lyrics...as the song plays....
