@@kingjames1308 lol haven’t listened yet. That’s why I spoke only of what I know. But I had a feeling these comments were coming. :P At the time I discovered Maynard, I believe these were the OG 2, so to me they are sort of the original gateways to loving him as a vocalist. I was born in the early ‘90s.

Great reaction! Someone probably already said this in one of the comments of your Tool reaction videos but in case no one did: Maynard always writes his lyrics when the other three band members have finished the song. So he "sculptures" the lyrics and his singing/ performance style around the foundation the others give him (if that makes sense). That's also why most songs have a difference in the vocal style and performances aswell. On top of that his voice is actually treated like the fourth instrument which could be another reason for why he sounds a bit different in almost every song.
You are one of the only reactors besides Rick Beato that Isolates Maynard's vocals and it is so awesome to hear them Isolated. This is what makes you stand out and I am here for it!
Don't forget that Maynard adds the lyrics after the music is mostly finished. He fits the lyrics and his delivery to the music and I think that's the real magic from this band.
Someone has likely already pointed this out, but in case they didn't... Maynard comes in with his parts last. The rest of the band writes, does the arrangements and then records it. Once the tracking is done, they give it to Maynard and he writes his melodies and lyrics. So when you pointed out how the arrangement really emphasizes the "the whole world dies" section - you're right. But it was entirely Maynard that chose to hammer the lyrics that way. Their system works really, really well 😁
Right on man. I hate hearing all the "when Maynard was writing the album" nonsense. He writes his parts, and they are brilliant. But It's a huge part of the story to note that the music is written first. It does service to both the rest of the band, and to Maynard for coming up with vocals and lyrics that fit the music so perfectly.
Amazing breakdown of a song I've loved for a very long time, you even showed me new aspects to the song (isolation tracks and the close-mic whispering) that I never realized. Instant sub for me!

tool is a band that believes words get in the way. album lyrics before fear innoculum were not available for months even years after each respective release. this is similar to why maynard as vocalist takes a step back from being your typical "frontman". they are fractal in their intentionality ...it is meant to reiterate a few things: active listening (as opposed to passive listening - i refer ppl to robert fripp for all that) and adage "the map is not the territory" (which is "there is no spoon" robert anton wilson talk). use the words (if need be) to get yourself to where you need to be in order to forget the words ...bc the real !@#$ is in the music, not lyrics. they will admit that, they have admitted that. i'll give a pass on skipping music video aspect on first listen ...but lyrics were never part of the "first listen" experience tool specifically meant to cultivate. there are message boards dedicated to "what did he say?" leaving things open to interpretation, and introspection. listener is therefor inherently more engaged. remember, context over content always. "question authority" of mind, of words, of everything you (ego) think you know, "watch things die"... esp lyrics. "try and read between the lines", "move between the sounds" ..."to the spaces betwixt" (these are all tool lyrics). if you get caught up on lyrics, you're overlooking the music, and before long you're counting syllables and "never thought to question why".
That wooshing vocal sound is a classic tool trick of flipping the tape over and recoding reverb then flipping the tape back over and the reverb comes in before the vocal in reverse.

Awesome video yet again! I especially liked the isolated vocals and hearing your take on them. I don’t know if you missed it (which is easy to do when it comes to tool with all the things going on all the time) but the shredding guitar sound that starts at 11:27 isn’t a guitar at all, but instead it’s Justin Chancellor going absolutely mental with his bass! Just a small thing that you might want to consider in the future is to film yourself in either 30fps or 60fps instead of doing 25fps or 50fps. It sounds like after that high A at the end he drops to the major third. I hadn't noticed that before. I'd have to listen again but I'm thinking that's the only time they use F# in the song.
I love the analysis in your videos! Much better content than reaction videos I've seen from other youtubers. How are you able to isolate the vocal track from the song?
Never do their videos on your first listen, imo. They are quite (intentionally) distracting and are their own art project with often very little to do with the music
Maybe Tools members signed a pact at the beginning of the band. "Thou shall play in D minor". They got rid of that choice, now they can vary the rythm as much as they want.
I was on the gym the first time i heard the song i was bloowing away with the very end, that was so original and i think i never heared a song like that with that ending, im so happy discovering TOOL
Your reviews are THE most delightful. I really like how you don't try to interpret the lyrics too much. The focus on the WAY the lyrics are presented is more interesting than the lyrics. Also, thank you for not commenting on the video. I enjoy hearing a vocal coach focus on the vocals, rythym, melody, production, and the effect. A+ for your reactions!
Regarding the abrupt ending... you really need to see how the guitar and percussion play into the guitar and percussion at the beginning of the next song on the album (Jambi). When listened to in succession, they really don't fully lose the momentum they build at the end of Vicarious, and it doesn't feel like as abrupt of an ending while listening to the album. They'll sometimes have one song almost flow into the next song -- I think the most pronounced example of this would be from "Intermission" to "Jimmy" on the Ænima album. Glad to see you're enjoying the complexity of TOOL and Maynard. You should go see them in concert!
6:30. Just remember, they are able to do ANY song in the entire TOOL cartography/dimorphism/songs live. Remember that. Any song you listen to on RUclips or other…they can do live. Even today! Remember that. 🌿🌸

Great content, really appreciate your breakdown and focus on the singing technique and how it works with the storytelling! Would recommend avoiding the music videos and pulling a high quality copy or just spotify so you can really hear everything clearly. Looking forward to more!
First, I have to say that your successful attempt at doing Maynard’s 26ish second sustained note in your “The Grudge” reaction was one of the impressive things that I’ve ever seen anyone do on RUclips (Full stop). Great job!
Even if Cristina wasn't stunningly gorgeous - and she is - that Australian accent would still make me melt. Cristina is absolutely lovely. Plus she appreciates Tool, which is a major plus in my book. She's a positive champion. Beauty, talent, and smart as all get out. What more could one hope for?
I got very much a kids singing a song on a playground kind of feel and I think that was on purpose. Its very childish of a concept to feed on tragic events removed from yourself. I love too its fun to watch people hear it for the first time. Thanks!
If I'm not mistaken, every Tool song is drop D except Prison Sex which is drop B. From a tuning perspective they're pretty...rigid. Seems timing is where they have their fun.
Tool’s singer Maynard does some cool vocals in his other band a perfect circle. I’m no singer but the scream in “Judith” is similar to that in tool’s the grudge and think his vocal range gets pretty wide in “weak and powerless”
You're the only reactor whose videos I watch more than once, I really appreciate hearing your thoughts and analysis! You asked about the meaning behind the visuals in one of the comments, so I thought I'd add my own thoughts on that topic. Disclaimer: art is subjective, this is my opinion, and others might have a different view of the same art. The "snakes" are a representation of our visual awareness, connecting the eyes to the outside world. The flea is a blood sucking parasite, and represents that vicarious aspect of the watcher that is the central theme of the song. The eye that appears in both the palm of the hand and the flea itself are representations of consciousness - this is a common theme in the art of Alex Grey. The trippy visuals come from an artwork by Alex Grey called "The Net of Being", a representation of shared consciousness which some believe underlies our physical reality. The watcher falls into this Net of Being after being mentally reborn, and explores the deeper levels of consciousness, until a flame of understanding, a "capital R" Realisation of Self, erupts from the eye of consciousness in the watchers palm and strikes the watcher in their "third eye", shattering this need to vicariously feed on the tragedy around us, represented by the glass screens breaking apart - itself a representation of a TV screen. Finally, we see an eye on the Earth, representing the hope that by enough people breaking free of this vicarious feeding on tragedy, a shared consciousness can arise around the world, and instead of vicariously feeding on tragedy, go out into the world and be the change that the world needs. I hope that makes sense? What I wrote is a bit disjointed, but in general terms I think that's the message of the song and video.
It’s time for the drum cam pneuma reaction video. Additionally, need to hit Lateralus for the time signature Easter eggs and Right In Two cause it’s a personal favorite. I love all of these Tool reaction videos. “The Army” welcomes you. ❤️🔧
PLEASE PLEASE Do a vocal analysis of Protest the Hero. Literally any song would work but Bloodmeat or Sequoia throne would be a great starting point. An unbelievably intelligent band with and equally impressive vocalist. Your content is awesome!
I believe what you called “the megaphone effect” is supposed to sound like a news broadcast in the background, I think of it like a background singing track, also saying the lyrics. About @ 6:30 in. @ 13:30 I call that pre-verb, as in you take the vocal recording, reverse it. Then apply a reverb effect, then reverse it again. So it’s a backwards reverb. Just to further articulate what you were trying to say.
If there is one song I want you to listen to is Wings for Marie/10000 Days (2 songs but should be listened together). Seeing that you are a theatrical singer as well you will love the atmosphere and the instrumentation. And the lyrics on that song are very emotional and, in my personal opinion, the best composition written by Tool. And for the Tool army reading this comment, I understand that Lateralus in itself is probably their greatest achievement with a theme. What I mean with Wings/10000 Days is a composition written for someone, with emotion, with an image, with sentiments infused in it, with a story...a song that can transport you.

Much better you than I.
I literally sing that line every time I'm driving past vehicular accidents or people pulled over for moving violations. 😆 🤣 😂
My favorite as well, at least tied with Wings For Marie/10000 Days and Jambi. As you can see I absolutely obsess over 10000 Days. A perfect album.
outstanding analysis of this song. Really like your in depth breakdown of the vocals. Very educational.
I love the analysis in your videos! Much better content than reaction videos I've seen from other youtubers. How are you able to isolate the vocal track from the song?
I love the smile on your face at the end. Danny is a beast
Danny is an absolute BEAST and the rest is too l
15 year old fan of tool. Learnt so many new things today. Thank you
You have to hear them live. The studio albums are amazing, the tours... are Effing Amazing.
Rosetta Stoned by Tool is also a great showcase of the bands ability.
Yo those isolated vocal tracks are sick! Subscribed lol
Unlike other "reaction" or analyzing videos, you seperate the vocals. And i love it. Great choice. 🫡
HUGE tool fan. I watched probably most of these reaction videos, and I gotta say this was one of my favorites from a vocal coach/ singer.
6:30. Just remember, they are able to do ANY song in the entire TOOL cartography/dimorphism/songs live. Remember that. Any song you listen to on RUclips or other…they can do live. Even today! Remember that. 🌿🌸
Yea. And flawlessly
you've got some poise, that's for sure 👍 I didn't mind the poises
Hi Christina, Tool fan here. I love the way you react with this Tool's song. I would like you also react "il Sogno" song by Isyana Sarasvati, it's such an amazing song which combining opera singing style and prog metal music
I had never heard that news reel megaphone kind of effect before, couldn't pick it out of the mix. Thanks for that!
landed on your channel after hearing jinjer for the 1st time.
the effect you are referencing around the 13 min mark is reverse reverberation. the first i remember of it was in the 80's when it was featured in one of the nightmare on elm street sequels. the gsp-21 guitar pre-amp i had in the early 90's included that effect anongst the others (chorus, flange, delay, etc). appreciate your content. you may find the work geoff tate did with queensryche stimulating and interesting. i doubt i would be the first to recommend him.
regards.
Great reaction little lady!!! Tool is always layering big time, one of my all time favorite bands... They just do it how they want and don't really pay attention to the normal musical rules hahaha
Great content, really appreciate your breakdown and focus on the singing technique and how it works with the storytelling! Would recommend avoiding the music videos and pulling a high quality copy or just spotify so you can really hear everything clearly. Looking forward to more!
Bored and Can't sleep 3:00AM and I find a pretty woman nerding out analyzing Tool this is a great channel
First, I have to say that your successful attempt at doing Maynard’s 26ish second sustained note in your “The Grudge” reaction was one of the impressive things that I’ve ever seen anyone do on RUclips (Full stop). Great job!
The drums in this one are sooooo good!
Please do a video on Tool's "Wings for Marie" Parts 1 & 2. Maynard's magnum Opus!!!
This is cool… keep up the vocal analysis. I’m here for it.
This was a fantastic breakdown, Young Lady! Bravo 👏
Love your picture in the back!!!
Immediate follow. Your breakdowns are amazing!
As usual really enjoyed it and your musical knowledge to go with
Sober is probably the most impressive feat of vocal ability Tool can deliver. Especially the live versions
Can't wait for your reaction to pnuema... especially with Danny Carey drum cam video
MORE T00L PLEASE!
I love many bands and genres of music from different times (from Classic into Drum n Bass) but i'm sure Tool will forever be one of my favorite bands!
"Schism" is like the ultimate tool song!!! it's got everything what makes them great!! like the "enter sandman" for metallica...
Great reaction and amazing breakdown of vicarious.Don't be a stranger and do some more tool please
