It's so interesting that you brought up Britney Spears - she has said that Britney is one of her biggest idols! Despite being in a metal band, she is very into pop and inspired by various pop artists. I know she also loves Gwen Stefani :)

@@cristinamrusso you as an vocal coach find for sure a lot of joy and amazement in eivors voice. to start into this rabbit hole i reccomend to listen to "falling free" live at the old theater in torshavn. her voice can do amazing things, she carries ages and centuries in her voice, plus she is able to do ancient throat singing techniques. she has absolute voice control. you can literally pick any song without disappointment.
she also made the soundtrack for netflix' the last kingdom. (the theme song for this was published recently, also interesting to watch and listen)

Probably because every reaction channel owner has read the same guidelines about how to structure reaction videos. That's why so many channels pause before the chorus, maybe repeat the first verse etc...

You mentioned her good diction. Tatiana is a native Ukrainian speaker, and she has said in at least one interview that when she sings in English, she wants to make sure she is understood. Makes me wish everyone singing in English were foreign speakers so we could understand them all. 😂😂
especially with screaming in metal. that is the one thing that deters me about it. people start screaming and I can't understand the lyrics any more. I love Tatiana for doing it better. and for having so much substance to her screams.
A little correction there, Tatiana speaks in Russian cause she was born in the Eastern region of Ukraine, i know all of them have to speak some Ukrainian, but have never seen any interview or comentary by them in Ukrainian

Yes, that's really another quality to all of those already really great videos. I'm just waiting on reaction videos to this reaction video.
Tatiana has said in interviews that when she learned the technique she was disappointed because she sounded too much like a female. So she set about learning how to sound more like the guys. Obviously she succeeded. Gwen Stephani and Amy Winehouse are among her influences and you can hear that in her singing in a lot of songs. I really think you would like her One Take Vocal video of their song Judgment and Punishment and Perennial Live at Wacken Open Air video.
Yes, I forget which song it is, but there is at least one where the Gwen Stefani influence is very prominent and easily recognizable.
@@joelhammond4162 IMO, Vortex is a strong example of that influence, whether intentional or not. It's really fun to hear.
Agree with checking out the one take of Judgement & Punishment. Perennial live at Wacken is a must too. I'd add Teacher, Teacher & and one more, Retrospection as well.
"Who is Gonna Be the One" for earlier song. I'm particularly enamored with "Judgment/Punishment" (one take), for the reggae vibes.
I watched another reaction to this song and the reactor said her clean vocals sound like Britney Spears and now I just can't help but hear that correlation when I hear Jinjer. I definitely can hear Gwen Stefani influence too though in some songs. Anything to get the Britney Spears correlation out of my head.

Oh, girl. I can't wait until you get the lyrics of this song & listen back to it again. The story of her bitter self resentment coupled with the dichotomy of her failing relationship all culminate in this devastating maelstrom of self destruction in the outro. I've been a musician all my life and never have I had a song bring me to tears in that brief three seconds after the last chord is played. It's like all her pent up energy is at last allowed to be exhaled & a flood of tears let loose. The song stirs up a whirlwind of emotions (insecurity, desperation, hopelessness, unbridled anger) and at the very end all subsides to a deep lethal sadness. True art.

Yup, very nicely put. I'm fond of pointing out that her shift to a more third-person/external narrative in her gutturals very much fulfills the same purpose as the Greek chorus in a classical play - driving and mercilessly describing the fate of the doomed protagonist that is her first-person Pisces.
What I also love is it ends at its peak. There is nothing after culmination, it just done leaving you with thunderstorm of emotions to think in silence.

“Now she’s just showing off” is my favorite quote from this! I’m also a reactor but now I want to see YOUR music! The way you can mimic the voices in the song is amazing to me.
It never gets old the facial expressions and peoples minds being blown not just by the first chorus section, but the quick / seamless return to clean vocals, then the big belting section in the final bridge, love it 😁
This is the reason I LOVE first timers on Pisces :D
Especially at the first chorus when you can literally "see" the reactors brain shutting down and you can hear the "56k modem connecting" sound :D

The studio version of "judgement and punishment" is just her in the booth. really gives you a chance to see what her mouth and throat are doing when she sings. and coincidentally the next song on your list when Pisces ended. She is a goddess!!

The human voice is so amazing.
This type of screaming does not use the vocal chords so it's not really "voice", but I get what you mean. That some people can do this and sing perfectly for hour long performances is crazy. If you tried to scream without having proper technique you would blow your voice real fast.

"Voice" is the most pure passive verb in the English Language.

This live session was done to showcase Vlad on drums. He had joined not long before this, but it ,of course, went viral because of Tatiana. Vlad is classically trained on piano, and self taught on drums. Roman on guitar, and Eugen on bass, along with Vlad write the music (this was written before Vlad joined) ,and Tati writes most of the lyrics. I think I've read the time signature is 7/8, but don't quote me on that. Tatiana is mostly self taught as well. According to other reactors(iirc Elizabeth at the Charismatic Voice, an opera singer), that clean belt went to E5. Yes, from Ukraine, Donetsk in the eastern part, where the fighting started in 2014. When the current fighting started , the guys were stuck in Kiev, but were allowed to leave last summer, to tour and be ambassadors for Ukraine.
She can do it live too, Perennial at Wacken 2019 is the usual next step to see that. Pit of Consciousness in Kiev is good too. Other songs to try: Teacher Teacher, Judgement(and Punishment), I Speak Astronomy, Vortex, and Home Back(about the fighting in their homeland in 2014).
To me, all verses and interludes were in 7/8, choruses were 4/4-4/4-2/4 (or you can count in eighth notes too) and the end section was in a unswung 6/8. Thoughts?

As a drummer, I'd count it like this:
Intro:

Verse (clean):

All these can be conuted as /8 and combined into 6/8's 7/8's and syncopated 8/8's.
I prefer to break them down into as small counts as possible to keep track of them when counting and playing.
@@andrewkarp5067 Yes, 7/8 for verses, 12/8 chorus.
Verses are in 7/8, bridge sections are in 6/8, and the chorus follows a bar of 8 and bar of 12... giving it this odd 20/8 feel. But you wouldn't count it at 20/8 - easier to just count each bar in the chorus separately.
The shock discovering Tatiana's grawl was also the first shock I had, and it still has some of its surprising effect years later, but there are 4 more things shocking me way more :
1- She does it without effort, seamlessly going from her clear, beautiful and accurate voice to her complex grawls.
(big up to you to have felt the diversity of texture she can bring in her grawls, most non metalheads - and even a bunch of metalheads - just hear a rasp and miss how rich it can be)
2- It's not a studio exploit needing hundreds of takes to get a good one. She's a live artist first and she is just as good on stage.
3- She's an insane performer, she does all this running, jumping, head banging etc, and just as well as standing here.
4- To make it even harder there's also the physical and psychological fatigue this band faces like any other one touring worldwide for more than a hundred shows a year, but in addition Jinjer isn't only Ukrainian but from the Donbass. In 2014 they had to leave everything behind and struggled to just survive. Their actual success came after a lot of years of costs and pains. They keep fighting for peace because of the recent Russian invasion, but it makes a decade they are facing such atrocities and just keep doing their best to give hope, energy, and even material help, to their people. So they not only have to carry their burden but also they feel they got to keep showing strength to help others facing their pain. That's a lot.
She is in full control, and has been during the past 14 years, while many others would have broke their voices just after some days trying to grawl.
I think her secret lays exactly where the power of metal guitars is : it sounds extremely strong but it's all about playing soft. A very powerful metal guitar needs to be very clean, and be played very softly, in order to control and push effects the most violently possible to avoid sound to become a mush. There's no artificial effect on her voice, but I feel it's about the same philosophy... a clear, soft and very accurate base, with perfectly controlled saturation of her grawl, then pushed by amps to build a monstrous wall of sound. It sounds like butchering with a chainsaw but it's laser tight surgery. It would explain why she has done it for so long without hurting herself.
I love seeing people hear her for the first time. It’s just great.
Jinjer are fantastic, four musicians who have mastered their instrument and are almost symbiotic when they play. You also need to delve into the lyric, Tatiana is a great poet. Lots of great songs to dive into, obvious choices are the one take of Judgement and Punishment, Vortex shows of some great lows and Teacher Teacher is os diverse. Agree she is a cross between Britney, Gwen Stephani and Randy Blythe (Lamb of God) all big influences for her. Enjoy the ride.

Jinjer often use multiple time signatures in their songs. This one has 7/8 and 6/8. I Speak Astronomy has 4 time signatures in the first minute and Tati does some epic belts at the end. The performance is live, but there is double tracking of the vocals in post-production which is more pronounced in the second verse, which is probably what you are hearing.
Its just 4/4 and 3/4 on repeat.

The verses are in 7/8 (you wouldn't break that into alternating 4 and 3 when annotating it), the pre-chorus is in 6/8 (you wouldn't call it 3/4 because of the 7/8 preceding it), the instrumental section following the first pre-chorus is in 4 time, the chorus is two bars of 7/8 followed by one bar of 6/8 repeated 4 times, then after the second chorus it's all 6/8.
Sounds like 7/4 to me.
@@john091077 Whether you call it 7/4 or 7/8, only the first two verses and choruses are in 7 time, the pre-choruses, mellow section and big finish are all in 6 (or 3) time.
The most impressive vocal technique for me at the moment is Devin Townsend's. He is able to switch seamlessly from his operetta-like voice to highly aggressive screams without any effort. This can be heard particularly well in his performance of "Deadhead" at the Royal Albert Hall. It is out of this world.
She’s amazing live. And tiny. Just saw Jinjer for the 3rd time recently. So good.
Tati (and Courtney) can even flip back and forth between cleans and screams in the middle of a phrase!
Floor Jansen and Alissa White Gluz as well. And both those ladies are better singers. Where I think Tati is definitely the better hard vocalist. Floor Jansen would be the best all rounder. But I know a lot of other Jinjer fans don't seem to be too much into symphonic styles of metal. Which is okay. Can't all like the same thing 😊
One of the best male growling voices that's going around is done by Michael Akerfeldt from Opeth. He can also transform his voice into cleans and harsch with no effort. When done the right way this kind of vocal technique can be a very impressive way of translating intentions, emotions, color, sphere etc in a song. I understand this type of singing much better now listening to bands like Jinjer, Opeth, Gojira and etc. I hope your investigation goes further. I thank you.
Incidentally, Tati has said he's the vocalist she'd be most likely to fangirl over if she met him.
I think if you're looking for the best, you're going to find them in, to some, unexpected places. Mark Garett from Kardashev is probably one of the best, but there's lots of names to keep in mind out there. Will Ramos popped off recently because of his insane screams, but he's got some decent cleans too, though not on the level of Mark, and his band is deathcore so not much clean singing going on there. Ne Obliviscaris and Spiritbox are great examples of bands with vocalists that both have really nice cleans and screams, or Enterprise Earth if you wanna get more extreme. Fallujah (progressive tech-death) also has a new vocalist who's crazy good, possibly on the level of Mark, but I don't think we've heard all he can do.
TL;DR: lots of stuff to keep your eyes on out there, even aside from the greats like Opeth, Gojira, Jinjer etc... and it's only gonna get better

I just thought of Orbit Culture as well, their sound is pretty enjoyable to most metal listeners.
Anyway, there's too much talent out there going under the radar though, we've probably mentioned a fraction of the great vocalists out there that can sing and scream well.

"Pisces" never fail to bring tears to my eyes and goosebumps up my arms. Dont know what it is, but Tati's changes between soft vulnerability and straight-up demon is almost transcendental to me.
If you want to go in a different scream direction, go for the band Heilung and their live version of the song "In Maidjan" from Castlefest 2017. Their female singer Maria Franz delivers some insane vocals inspired by the nordic Kulning calls.

I love how the fact that she sings lower in the first verse and then more "Britney-like" in the second also makes sense if you pay attention to the lyrics, as she is describing a duality. "One being brigs life, another runs for death". For some reason this song always makes me wanna cry, I find it both sad and beautiful.

Vs 3 is 6/8 & I think changes to a minor key.
Just watch how relaxed Tatiana's neck is when she transtitions into the scream. Nothing is forced including her breathing.
They were also incredible to see live in Melbourne last year. Insane energy on stage.

Aliki Katriou has some of the most detailed metal scream tutorials on RUclips, she knows a lot about vocal anatomy and gives tons of exercises to develop different aspects of screams. Super underrated channel, but really helpful.
I love how all the reactions to this song always pause right before the break down after the first chorus. I love it it makes me giggle that they were like waiting for that drop and they paused right at that job.

You have some amazing vocal chops yourself! The melodic part of the song mimics a gentle back and forth of waves on the beach. During the heavy part of the song reminds me of a ship crashing through powerful waves in a storm at sea. A very "Aquatic" vibe. Looking forward to your journey down the Jinjer rabbit hole.
"Not sure where the downbeat is"..."hard to work out the timing"..."it's really unsettling" = Jinjer.

Ayup. That's a Jinjer thing, the band is so tight they can make quite ordinary time signatures sound like there were several fancier ones, because if everyone is of one mind and really good you don't have to *sound* like you're staying put.

You forgot "Pit of Consciousness" Live at Kiev. I think that has some of her lowest of low growls.
When the live session video came out I had a co-worker show it to me for the shock value. Little did I know that they would become one of my favorite bands. Also, their song Home Back hits a little harder these days.
Seen them a couple weeks ago amazing. Her voice is like no other.
You are the first person I’ve seen that payed attention to the deviation from the melody in the 3rd verse/act and gave it particular credit. Made me happy lol. I found that part hypnotic and captivating.
This is the only song I know from them at this point, but I really hope they have some songs where her belt is featured much more. The clean vocals were beautiful, the growls were impressive, but that tiny section near the end where she let loose with that belt blew me away!

Best way I've heard it described is that if someone coughs, you don't necessarily know if that person is male or female... you completely relax the vocal chords and only use the folds for vibration. Put simply, force a deep cough, feel where that is within your tract, and modulate ONLY those muscles (and some abdominal pressure) without engaging anything within your neck or throat. You were in the right general area on your last attempt :)
Welcome to Jinjer! Awesome reaction and I hope you continue with this amazing band! They have a very deep catalog of great songs for you to discover. I would recommend a live in concert song next, either Perennial (live at Wacken 2019 or Pit of Consciousness (live in Kiev) as great next stops as this band is even better live!

I can never get enough of reactions to this song. I really appreciate the quality of the analysis- but what makes this video truly authentic for me is that you admit upfront that you’ve done some research, you know there will be screaming, and you don’t act as if it can’t be her or that you totally didn’t see that coming. The honesty is refreshing!

It's worth mentioning that Tatiana is basically self taught. She's using her false folds for most of the growling, which is how she does it without hurting herself. Also, the band is so technically impressive. Great things all around with Jinjer!
Yeah, Tatiana first reactions never disappoint, LOL. And this is by far not her lowest growls or most versatile song. If you check out "Home Back" you will probably be surprised how incredible not only her versatility is, but also how progressive, amazing and unique their songwriting and sound handling is...
I have yet to hear a bad Jinjer song, and their discography is already impressive.
Tati’s ability to transition seamlessly from clean to dirty vocals is second to none. A truly amazing vocalist in a band full of amazing musicians.
If you want another great “screamer” with good enunciation, Randy Blythe from Lamb of God has great dirty vocals but you can still understand what he is singing.
Try Jinjer - Judgement(& Punishment).
Specifically the One take vocal performance.
Each of their songs are so different and Tatiana often looks different. When you think you know what to expect, they'll change it.
So refreshing to see react from a vocal coach who will demonstrate point with singing and just not saying : '' Head voice...''
Aside of this fun scenario of being knocked off your socks you have to realize what she actually does with her voice is mind blowing. The whole band is exceptional but she is the cherry on top.
If you're looking for more suggestions of lady screamers to check out, I'd strongly suggest watching Angela Gossow (formerly of Arch Enemy - she retired from performing and now manages the band), Alissa White-Gluz (who was hand-picked by Angela as her replacement), Melissa Bonny (Ad Infinitum), and Vicky Psarakis (The Agonist).
Edit: I also forgot Lauren Hart of Once Human. She's an absolute beast and has talked a lot about how important fitness is for screamers.

@@richardthresh3587 It's definitely an acquired taste. It's easier if you think of them moving the melodic line off the voice and onto the guitar(s), and making the voice a rhythm instrument.

Great reaction and analysis! Tatiana's harsh vocals are interesting for a couple of reasons. First she uses false cord growling for her lows and fry screaming for her highs, and she can seamlessly transition between them. Secondly, she gets an unusual amount of static-y overtones in her false cord growling, which is unusual because it's done with the true folds held open and thus its really hard to get enough air pressure going in the vocal tract to get much rattle out of tissues above the false folds when the true folds are held open (in fry screaming the true folds are held closed to pressurize the air stream but not phonate, making it way easier to get the pressure to rattle those tissues higher in the vocal tract). To get that much 'rattle' in a false cord scream implies she's able to generate a TON of breath support.
If you want to get a good chance to see her face/neck as she does this stuff, you should check out her one take vocal performance of Judgment & Punishment.
Also, at the end when you were trying to imitate her lows, it sounds like you're squeezing in the throat and/or not holding the true folds fully open. You were much closer to doing it the right way earlier in the video in the brief imitations you did of that growl sound. At least that's what it sounded like to my ears.
i've watched hundreds of "pisces" reaction videos, and you're the first one to point out the timbral differences between the verses. also, i literally laughed out loud at "COOKIES!" great stuff, you've earned my sub. :)
New sub and I really loved, LOVED that reaction. It is not a scream, it's a growl (growling being the main vocal technique used by most death metal bands) and if learnt properly it's not harmful. Enjoy the journey, grabbing pop corn for more of your reactions.

-When it comes to how the vocal tones of the first 2 verses and the chorus after each, the song I think of is “This Love” by Pantera. In the 1st verse, the “character” is somewhat reserved in their tone. There’s a reluctance to open up and express themselves. Something is holding them back. In the chorus, that’s where they release whatever was holding them back. So, in the second verse, there’s a sense that they are more confident to open up. There’s still reluctance but it’s not as much there as before.
-I have heard this song 1000’s of times. I still can’t not get emotional over the belt. I tense up right before “Pisces swimming….” and brace myself.
-As I’ve gone the Jinjer rabbit hole over the past year, I am incredibly impressed with the how much they try to incorporate as many styles into their music. Please continue checking them out.
Jinjer is such a tight band overall. I saw them live and the precision of their music is mind blowing. I would suggest watching the one take of Tatiana singing Judgement and Punishment to get a good look at how she sings, since it is just her singing and the camera stands just off center and never moves. It is amazing how she can go between her two voices with such ease.

Charismatic Voice is Elizabeth Zharoff's channel. She has been exploring this too. She even convinced a growling vocalist to have a camera put down his throat so she could watch his voicebox and see what's happening while he does this. The video is up on her channel.
Tatiana is self taught, but Melissa Cross is the vocal coach who taught many of the biggest names in metal how to growl in a healthy way. Arch Enemy, Bring Me the Horizon, Infected Rain, Cradle of Filth, Gojira, Slipknot, even Dave Mustaine of Megadeth has taken lessons from her and he doesn't even growl. I'm pretty sure she has a RUclips channel too, or at least I've seen videos of her on here if she doesn't.

I saw Jinjer in a small bar in Houston, TX 4 or 5 years ago. I knew nothing about them when I went. They blew my mind and I've been a fan ever since.

If you want other role models for harsh vocals, you may want to look into Alissa White-Gluz, the Beast Queen of Metal herself, usually with the band Arch Enemy. Also Melissa Bonny of Ad Infinitum, Avienne of Vintersea, Lauren Hart of Once Human, and no doubt many others that slip my mind.
Tatiana is insane, undoubtably the best in her genre by far, let alone the band who absolutely kills it. You really need to listem to Lorna Shore if you want to hear the most insane vocals. Will will blow your mind.

The funniest & most entertaining reaction video to any song (I've watched dozens of reactions) I have seen.
Also, I've watched all the reactions to this song by a vocalist or teacher & you are, as far as I know, the only one to mention how different her voice is in each verse.
Total respect for branching out. Do keep in mind that Tatiana first started learning to growl when she was 15 and she was 30 when this was recorded. Obviously your background lets you shortcut the process since even though the skills aren't the same there's some overlap through control of the vocal tract, while her journey was slower due to mostly being self taught. Still building skills takes time so it's nothing to be embarrassed about. Also there's post production editing on both the cleans and growls here.
A cleaner recording from the same era is Who Is Gonna Be The One official live - which also is one where she goes into her _low_ growls. :D Lots more concert videos including Perennial at Wacken, On The Top live in Kiev (now Kyiv) which has a lot of great belting, Pit Of Consciousness live in Kiev which is one of their most impressive videos as a complete package including visuals, and Sit Stay Roll Over live in Melbourne which has more vocal tricks than I've seen her use in any one performance of a single song before. Both SSRO in Melbourneand all performancs of PoC she does low growls, btw. Though the Gas Monkey performance video has a cool scoop with her growls at the 2 minute 27 second mark that I've never seen her repeat in anything so while it isn't worth reacting to that video maybe take a peek at it just for fun. :) She gets bored easily and they tour almost constantly so she's constantly mixing different stuff into her performances to keep it fresh. I never get tired of seeing people watch this video. I wish I could remember my reaction to it. I was already a metalhead at that point, but I'm pretty sure I still thought "oh my God, that's like a male's growls". I think Tatiana's clean vocals in this song are meant to be slightly more pop sounding than her typical voice, to add extra contrast to the verse and chorus. That's the whole point of this song, the duality of her personality expressed by the different singing techniques. Most Jinjer songs aren't like this one, and mix the clean and dirty sounds more subtly.
I am not a trained singer at all. I just goof around in the car. I think I've figured out some things about harsh vocals, though. My diaphragm/abs/that whole area is really engaged when I go low. I don't know what you were using in this video, but I imagine no matter what is going on up in my head, I need support from the core to access that rumbling distortion that makes things sound more monstrous.
