My daughter is a music major in college and views this Tool song as a modern "percussion concerto". Some Tool songs like Schism are bass-led as opposed to the usual guitar, but this one is definitely a showcase around Danny and his drumming. Every member of Tool gets time in the spotlight. They really are an amazing band.
When I saw Tool live I was struck first by the stage set up. Bands traditionally set the drummer at the back with singer front and center.....bass and guitar either side. Not Tool......Drummer front and center. And Maynard was at the back facing the other way and never once turned around to face the audience. It was all about the music experience. No distractions from the normal theatrics of the singer. And they sound the exact same live as they do recorded. True virtuoso musicianship
As an OG Tool fan, it tickles me to no end that the youngs are still discovering how fucking insanely talented these guys are. 30 years and still going.
@@EclipsReactions damn right! if it was just flashy skill or dexterity with multiple rhythm patterns even THAT would be awesome (but Danny Carey is so good, restrained and calculated when needed, he makes this difficult shit look EFFORTLESS 🔥)
during the slow section, Danny is playing a 3 drum pattern with his left hand, a 5 drum pattern that reduces to a 4 drum pattern with his right hand, left foot is keeping time on the high hats and right foot is playing a kick drum, phenomenal stuff
After watching like 30 times this video I noticed that he keeps the beat with high hats on the spot but there was a moment where he missed it! And i was like what the hell? And the he regain the beat again. He is in another league, an absolut monster
The last tour was the best ive seen them. Wish I discovered them earlier to hear more of aenema album live as they dont play those tracks too often nowadays
63, jeez. You must have been a fan since inception. Nice. I bet you have an awesome collection of concert tees. I saw them every time they came to the Gulf Coast about 15x along with APC. My friend had a ticket and asked me to go last year, but I can't stand crowds anymore.

This past Monday I got to see the BEAT tour with a meet and greet with Steve Vai, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Danny Carey...Danny is a beast and the nicest person
The best part is how Danny Carey became Tool's drummer. Danny Carey met Maynard James Keenan (Tool singer) and Adam Jones (Tool guitarist) through their mutual friend, Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine. Maynard and Adam were renting out a practice space inside Danny Carey's home, and Danny would occasionally fill in as drummer when other drummers were no-shows. Danny wasn't trying to be their drummer, but there was a natural musical chemistry during their jam sessions and slowly over time, he joined the band.
bro -been playing drums for 37 years! and the VERY first time I heard this track, I had a VERY similar reaction as you..... then when this video dropped, I swear I had the EXACT same reaction as you - I almost wanted to put down my sticks and just call it a day bro.
Cool reaction. Subb'd. Keep in mind that Danny is 58 in this video, and this is the first time they performed this song live & you can always tell where they're at by what shirt Danny is wearing. He is the "octopus" and best living drummer IMO. Here comes Pau! LOL
You just popped up on my feed today. Watched all your tool vids, about to dive into your other reactions. Another excellent reaction. If you play it, the Tool Army will come.
I love watching people react to this song of danny carey playing the drums. Anytime people say anything about how good he is, i just think wait a minute, it gets better.
@@stewpot6998 Yeah, there are definitely a ton of names I could've included; Decades of them. I just went with the ones that are likely to be at the top of the vast majority of lists.
Just love it when human beings get to a level where it appears they are channeling a music spirit/God. As with athletes that perform wayyyy above average. It will never cease to amaze me.

Now that you have heard his most talented acolyte, I think it's time you hear "The Professor," himself, Neil Peart. A few years ago, Carry had this to say about Peart (drummer for the legendary progressive rock trio, Rush); "Neil was so defined and he was such a precise composer in the way he played that that was a big influence on what I wanted to do with the band - to be in a band that did compositions, and it wasn't just jamming and stuff like that." Rush had a huge influence on Tool and, eventually, Tool would have some reciprocal influence on Rush (which was active from 1974 to 2015). If you like intricacy, power, and complexity in your music (which you must, if you like Tool), you'll wind up loving Rush too. Peart was known for many things, one of which were his epic drum solos. Most people like to start with his "R30" Frankfurt performance in 2004, but there are many from which to choose. I'd recommend this one from 1988, which finds his solo embedded within one of Rush's most popular instrumental numbers, YYZ: ruclips.net/video/2E85dkOYhtQ/видео.htmlsi=d2EDxquND0Ldp6Zu Thanks for your efforts, which are very much appreciated!
Checkout Neil Peart’s drum solo on Rush’s R30: Live in Frankfurt. Danny Carey is the Neil Peart protege. He’s taken that style and incorporated it into his own signature style. The building layer upon layer of beats and patterns, the ferocity of his playing, the impossible four limb independence that are all independently working together. The band Tool is instrumentally a three piece band-with a singer makes it four. But they all multitask and play everything live on stage to replicate their recordings accurately. Definitely the best live band around today and one of the best I’ve ever seen.🤘🥁
The first time I saw the was right when they were blowing up on the AEnima tour November 1st 1996 and I will never forget it. I have been lucky enough see them on every tour at least twice since. It is the closet thing to a spiritual/religious experience. The First time I heard Stinkfist on the radio, I knew right then and there they were my new Favorite band.
The Professors Prodigy, I love the fact that he became friends with Neil Peart (R.I.P.) of Rush. Just one of I’m sure many others great drummers he admired. I hear some Steve Gad in those quick quads and triplets like at the end of Aja by Steely Dan. I’ll shut up now but Before you reply, please don’t tear me apart. I’m a BRAND NEW tool fan and longtime bassist. Just want to hear and learn only everything about these guys.. WOW!
Years ago, I said the same thing about Danny "being an alien" and 'not of this world' and was wasn't surprised to see your face change into an expression of WTF within the first 30seconds. I'm sure anyone and everyone who watches this amazing drummer/band for the first time reacts in the same way. I played drums for 35yrs and wouldn't scratch the surface of this man's talent. Subbed.
Notice how he goes from double strokes to single strokes at the beginning and you can't even tell. Seamless transition. And apparently, he did it in one take in the studio.
Danny Carey is THE BEST drummer EVER, in my opinion!! The way both arms AND legs are doing their own thing....untouchable. Tool is AMAZING live. Since 1993, I've seen them 16 times & they NEVER disappoint. You haven't lived until you've seen them live.
I'm always looking for this video reaction because to see if people really know what in tf what they are hearing,,, you sir, picked up on it right away.
Whoever Idea was to shoot Danny on a video like this one is a Genius it has brought not just more audience and new fans but also made the bad bigger than ever !..LOVE TOOL!
those 'Odd Sounds' are synth triggers. I love how he plays the chorus section at various levels of intensity. This song has a beginning, a middle, and an end.
Tool live is amazing!. Seen them in the mid 90s then again recently at Sonic Temple Columbus Ohio. Enjoyed the reaction as always!!! I normally record live performances at concerts for my youtube channel but Tool prefers you not to and enjoy the show. I usually honor any bands wishes in those regards. So I did not record Tool.
It's one thing that Danny's so comfortable with such mathematically complex timings, but then he manages those smooth fills too? Just mind-numbing, Danny is an absolute treasure.
" To do something as simple as that". Pauses.. " Nevermind, that is not simple at all" 🤣 That would be a correct assessment! Playing 3 diff drums with your left hand while playing 4 diff with your right hand all while the left foot runs the bass kick drum and the right foot runs the High hat symbol and keeping it all in harmony is the most impressive part of this whole video to me.
I agree Danny is absolutely incredible and yes I can confirm seeing this live is out of this world. It’s a very spiritual experience! I 10/10 would recommend seeing it live for yourself if you’re into that kind of thing.
and to play all this from memory (and this isn't even one of the craziest examples for careys drumming given there are multiple polyrythmic pieces by Tool)

This man was 59 when he did this lol.
Goes to show you don't have to give in to age. I dunno how long he can realistically keep that level up, though.
Takes a lot of years to develop independence as a drummer.
Dude, I wish I had half of this magic. God Bless people like him.
And is still doing it, night after night. Exactly the same...
Danny is a beast, been doing this forever. Glad to see eyes on what he does and people digging it
Mike Portnoy put it the best way. He said, "This is not a song. It's a mathematical equation." He's not wrong.
Yeah😂😂😂 I spilled a lot of coffee o my keyboard watching that drumeo video. 😅😅😅😅
Portnoy considers it as a math instead of just music. Counted bars instead of feeling the groove.
That's why he's called "The Octopus" :)
Was looking for this comment. Yeah he truly is one of the best ever do it.

expensive to see anyone live these days
@briandiff1459 True! Tool is actually worth the cost though everytime.

That's fukken dope
He should work with Buckethead then.
He played basketball in high school and got some small college offers
Huge Tool fan (and basketball fan), never knew that about Bird or Danny actually playing basketball, amazing.
Never knew that. I used to hate this band in the 90s. What an idiot😂

Danny and Tony together and the genius of AB I gotta hear this!!!

It's pretty nuts that he's said this isn't even the most difficult song for him to play. I think he said Invincible was.
I thought he said it was The Grudge
Definitely said The Grudge is the most demanding.

@@HoldMyPoopKnife I just saw it in a reel. 🤷
Love the reaction my friend. I have watched this video of Mr. Carey 1000 times. I will never tire of witnessing a first view reaction 😅
Not just the skill and timing but the memory to remember every single beat at the right time. Memorizing everything is overwhelming.
I put him on the shortlist of greatest drummers -- up there with Peart and Bonham,
I'd say Danny's technically a better drummer, but Peart and Bonham were more influential
Both true statements

Tool, one of the few bands where you can find three people riding three different grooves and all still be in time. Saw them on this tour right before COVID ruined everything. It indeed is an experience watching The Octopus at work.
Bro got to see them live in el paso 2024 they played this song. First tool concert too was sick as fuck cant wait for the next!!
This is just 1 song this man plays every show
If you ever get the chance, go to a Tool show. It's unlike anything you've ever experienced. It's not just a concert, it's a visual spectacle. A two hour live movie told through song and art.
Carey is one of the best drummers on earth.
if I remember correctly, this dude's been on the drums since he was 5 years old. He's a master, no doubt.
Keeping 2 different time signatures at once, and to be able to make them distinguishable is so much talent! Practice!
that fucking synth and drum pairing is goddamn amazing.
Love his how its complicated at first listen but by the end of the song it slowly sucks you in. And by the end it got you!
Dude's tall too; 6'5". He was a really good basketball player growing up in Lawrence, Kansas where the game is king.
incredible technical player the time signatures are amazing
I love watching people discover Daney Carey and Tool.

Good luck experiencing this live. I remember tickets used to sell out in seconds
I attended Tool show at The B$mb Factory in Dallas mid 90's. There was always a before and after from then on.
thank You forYour reaction my friend!!!!! Thank You!!!!
I'm so happy Danny chose music over basketball!!🥰
Danny carey is probly the best ever! Seriously
The octopus always creates fans when they see him work 😊
Awesome reaction!!!
Was this the Boston show? Celtics t shirt? If so I was at this one. Absolutely amazing.
This performance is so Hypnotic.
