I'm a professional opera singer. My friend @coacheugeneteo put me on the spot to get my reaction on Pushit by Tool. I had never heard the song before. It turned into a deep analysis on TOOL and Maynard James Keenan and what makes them so great.

I'm Cristina, opera singer, singing teacher and speech pathologist. I have spent over a decade in the music industry as a performer, and I’ve done some pretty cool things as an opera singer, film vocalist, lyricist and jazz singer.
Here you'll find videos that deep-dive into artists that you adore. We'll unpack what makes a great and not so great vocal performance, and we'll also get into some voice tips and education about the science of the voice.

Thanks!
Thanks so much Matt! It's still early days for this channel so your contribution will help me keep it going!
@@cristinamrusso maybe do another tool song 😉
Maynard (particularly in Tool) tends to think of his voice more as another instrument in the band and that is reflected in the strange emphasis in his words. But its also what makes the song melt with emotion imo. Also, I have listened to this song at least 1000 times since 1996 and even to this day when he goes into the bridge "When I say I might fade like a sigh" still makes my hair stand up.
This line really floored me too. Beautiful lyric.
i love how this is reflected in the slow dissolving of maynard into the background at a tool show. early on he was a front man, with front man costumes and antics. but every tour, he would enhance certain things and slowly reduce his visual impact on a show. now you have to look to find him.
1000000%
Hair just stood up listening to it again even through this review
Same. Like an automatic trigger.
People forget how long Maynard kept his face concealed from the public
I've been a Tool fan for years, but suddenly I'm thinking....People roll their eyes at Tool now sometimes because the fans are known for being obnoxious, but decades from now when all the band members are gone, Tool will probably be known as one of the great legendary classic bands and be appreciated even more.
and with the 13 year hiatus, have earned my "biggest let-down" in music history.
Just imagine what they could have put out in that time? ahhh!
The whole band utilized Enochian Angelic magic to personally develop, and maximize their arts impact. The only other band to due this was Led Zeppelin.
@@kyleshick8360 interesting.
And that's an understatement on a colossal scale.
@ShastaBean check out Puscifer and obviously APC. Plenty of great music that involves MJK put out over the years. You can't rush perfection 😉
Your observation is spot on, young lady. I have been a fan of Menard's work for years. Unique, lovely, inspiring, and painfully direct (for some), their music pulls deeply rooted strings in a human being and shakes them like nothing else. Investigating the meaning and inspiration for each song will open new doors as a new fan.
Wasn't expecting to open this and see Eugene Teo!
whomever has been in a toxic environment with his/her partner in this situation will shiver everytime this song plays. It's so emotionally strong and heavy. I had to go through some shit with an ex of mine to really connect to what he's trying to convey.
For real!
Shivers and teared eyes every time.
Same situation as well.
This track gives me goosebumps nearly everytime. So emotive.
This song is about his mother sexually abusing him.
Not gonna lie, never saw it that way, that's hard@@matthewhall7496
Yes - this song makes me feel sick, but somehow it’s not in a bad way. It’s just so intensely spot on. One of my favorites. Would love to see her reaction to Songs for Marie & 10,000 Days. That build up can bring me to tears.
The song(s) Maynard doesn't particularly like to do much. 10,000 Days &Wings for Marie. They go together as 1.
Judith Marie Keenan was his mother. 10,000 days is how long she lived from her paralyzing aneurysm til death. ...it's painfully beautiful
Understandable, going back to that headspace to sing those again must be rough..
Actually on this recording Danny's tabla mentor/master, Aloke Dutta, is playing with him.
Tool triggers that ancestor DNA when we used to do these chants before huge battles and before hunting our food. Our society today with supermarkets forgot what these chants gave us spiritually and tool unlocks that DNA that thousands of years ago was built for surviving.
I enjoyed your take. Thank you
The Tabla on Salival is actually being played by Aloke Dutta. Danny is an absolutely amazing drummer, but doubling up on the tabla is beyond his skills. When I saw Tool in Melbourne I remember their guest tabla artist worming his way across the stage before taking his place.
Discovered your channel just this day. I really hope you can find the time and inspiration to upload some more. Going into great bands like Tool is really fun, but also the in-depth reactions and occasional humor in your videos is a very sweet combination.
Thanks for posting the fun content, I had a blast this evening after a hard days work!
Actually, a guy named Aloke Dutta (a Bengali from LA) is doing acoustic tabla on this recording... 🤩
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the line,
"I feel alive when you hold me down"?
One of my favorite Tool reactions!!!
Haha, keep it up!
New subscriber here. Real quick before I go off - do more! Tool's shows Philadelphia 1992 and Glass House 1996 are great recordings of live performances. You can see Maynard actually "turn off" in between songs; emerging from the zone he is in while singing. Now with that out of the way...
As many others have said, the lyrics/vocals are simply another instrument within the music. Maynard isn't trying to be the "frontman" of Tool, he is just one of the musicians within the band. This creates very odd cadences and inflections in order to go with the music. This also fits their music well since most of their music revolves around introspection, sociological issues, and trauma. It allows the listener to fall more readily into the sound. Sitting back and just listening to their music (especially their ten to fifteen minute pieces or a two part song like Wings for Marie) is like power meditation. You start out entranced and falling into the spiral (ha! - Tool pun) of sound before they build it into a controlled frenzy; a wall of powerful words and energy, screaming for you to rise up and scream with him. They are a band like no other in their style, technique and brilliance.
This one is the only Tool song with two percussionists. The tabla percussion is done by Danny's tutor, Aloke Dutta, and the regular drumming is by Danny.
Push it is a phenomenal song in any version!
Such baited anticipation, knowing what is coming watching her experience it for the first time.
I would love to have seen my reaction hearing this stellar performance the first time!
PS, she has a great voice and carry!!
5:42… Yes ma’am!!
I was at that Lewiston Me show ... it was amazing
Subscribing for not just more Tool (and Danny Carey drum cam) reactions, but also in hopes that you will also go into Maynards other bands, Puscifer, and A Perfect Circle.
In this version it seems like the band ‘slips into the gap’ immediately after Maynard says ‘down.’ Or at about the 13 min mark of this video. To me the rest of this iteration of the song seems to want to sound like that mental space. Lost at first, then chaotic, swinging, fast. If you’ve felt that frustration and anger you’ll recognize it. Maybe that’s obvious, it’s so well executed
Actually (sorry to be that guy lol), the tabla is being played by Aloke Dutta, Danny's old tabla instructor. I found him on Instagram. He's still going and doing studio work if you need him. He's insane.
I didn't see anyone comment this yet but Maynard started performing in the dark in the back because it was pulling away from the music. He's not the focus of the band and he performs that way now.
He’s been doing that for 20 years
Great reaction video!
Really liked this.
Now add PUSCIFER and A PERFECT CIRCLE songs!
Ladies and gentleman we have another birth of a tool fan
This whole album was amazing, but this version of pushit is my favorite song of all time. It covers everything that is tool from all the albums combined into one song.
MJK is just another TooL in the TooLbox of TooL!! 🤘
"even when he is belting, he's still got a - " BELL TONE is the phrase I believe u are looking for...
Just curious, but you mention reacting to Sober in this video, but I don't see that video on your channel? Was it removed for some reason? If so that's unfortunate, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
This is why Tool is Tool … that’s it 👍👍
I realized MJK uses his voice to convey each part of every song in Tool from low to mean just as any instrument in a band. That is why I also love the way they make music. Danny Justin and Adam will make the music and then MJK wil come with lyrics
Maynard is not only a winery owner he's a black belt martial artist too...
Greatest *anything* of all time is inherently unknowable and unprovable.
🌹for Christina.
"That drummer, my god!"
Now you should do the live version of "Sober" from 1991.
You absolutely need to do The Patient imo. One of the songs where the vocals are absolutely another instrument, although there are quite many. Only 7+ minutes. Short song😂.
Met Maynard at a wine store when I lived 1 block away from it called Silverlake Wine & Spirits. I happened. To get invited by the manager because I frequented the wine store twice a week to buy my girl bottles of wine. He came with a camera crew I guess to document the release of his own wines to hat he makes. I bought 2 bottles Sancha and Judith. The people in the store tried to move me to a line which was to meet Maynard and he would sign the bottles. But I wasn’t interested and when he get stood me in front of Maynard I could tell he absolutely did not want to be there because all the people in line to meet him seemed to annoy him and call out that he’d s GOD which I could tell he hated the whole event and literally cringed and made stink faces when fans acted a fool
Oh I Highly recommend Tools You Lied, and Tools remake on Led Zeppelin's No Quarter
❤❤❤❤❤
Tabla: I think Danny uses triggers live, but he records his own tabla sounds before
Now watch a 96-97 version of third eye live

I know its not TOOL but APC judith would show yet another side of him :)
And this is the Danny Carey drum cam video you are looking for

He is such an amazing drummer so powerful.
The whole salival album was a gift to the fans. You lied is a hidden gem.
that scream at the end, iykyk
Soooo goood changed my thought process on life
You Lied is actually a Peach cover, I believe. Justin Chancellor's previous band.
Their version of You Lied is probably my 2nd favorite song of theirs and I'm so sad it's not on spotify
@@MountainBen29yep. You are correct. It is a covet and the original, by Peach, sounds like TOOL. Peach opened for Tool which brought attention to Justin as a replacement for Paul D'more.
I must have seen a thousand Tool reactions at this point-and I've been an avid Tool junkie for most of my life-, but this one was exceptional. One of the best around. You two are effortlessly charming and endearing.
I thought the exact same thing!
I completely agree and I was about to comment on that as well. If there are more reaction songs, I want to see these two again...with these two I know the pieces fit.
I love how she says that it takes many listens to dissect a song like this but gives such an amazing vocal analysis on the first listen
Great reaction, and I’m here for your Tool journey! Don’t worry about the pausing…Tool fans have heard these songs thousands of times and have probably watched tons of reactions, so they are here for your genuine and professional(as a singer) opinion. Maynard doesn’t consider himself a lead singer, he sees himself as another instrument in the band…a band which seems to have a lead drummer, a lead guitarist and a lead bassist, depending on the track. Can’t wait for to hear the breath control on The Grudge, which your friend eluded to, and for you to see the octopus Danny Carey in action on Pneuma…but as most will tell you, they don’t have a bad song, and each one is a different journey. Have fun spiraling out🌀!
Maynard is an interesting person and artist because even after 30 years of enjoying the music he makes, I still can't confidently say the stage performance is the artist reacting to the music or if it is all thought out and executed for maximum effect. He is a very honest and sarcastic and feminine and masculine and tough and soft person.
He has this weird way of moving that’s imo just overflowing talent with body-control and expression. To my knowledge, he’s never just danced in a “normal” way, but what’s funny is i think he would be a fantastic traditional dancer. He _has_ to “avoid the cliché” with every move and knows that if he lets himself be vulnerable and feels this thing we call music in an improvisatory way, actually reacting to it then it will be successful. So he looks “awkward” like that because he just has this thing for it and Tool’s music just amplifies it.
Greatest lead vocalists and showman in rock history
Tool live is a life changing experience. No other musical performance will affect your mind, body, subconscious the way TOOL does.
new watcher here. i would like to say a few things. i have seen tool live a number of times and after their live show i feel like i have been beat up every time. its such an intense experience. the entire band are so amazing talented. they are almost alien live. like they dont move around on stage because you may see the cable that attatches their brains together. they can jam almost randomly for a half hour then suddenly on the 1 they alll come together like a kick in the chest. you go into a trance then get violently pulled out but in an amazing way. just such an amazing band and live experience.
Yes! I saw them 20 yrs ago and it was.... visceral. I hope I get the chance to see them again.
Great words here man, well done.
Shrooms made them holy in my experience. I got sober and changed my life with Tool and APC as the trip soundtrack along with some deep meditations and focusing on forgiving myself and being dedicated to change as well. Came out on the other end a better me. Medicinal mushrooms could change the world.
I’m going to 16 and 17 this year for me and I always feel like I need a day off afterwards. Esp when the set is like this. One show in Boston a few years ago took the life outta me and I’m one of those guys that really sits and listens. Great way to put it
you should feel... WHOLE. :)
The expression on the guys face for the first minute or so is every single Tool fan ever showing off Tool to someone for the first time.
Most of the tabla in the track is Danny triggering sounds off the various pads on his kit. The part at 16:10 is one of the special moments where Danny's tabla instructor Aloke Dutta joined them on stage and the two are playing together.
Yes! I was looking for the “it’s Aloke Dutta” comment…I mean, i owned the Salival VHS and he was definitely listed in the credits…it got lost down the line; I’ve seen many reactions to this and I’m usually that guy. 😆
Tool - The Grudge!
Review done - and it’s awesome 👏🏻
I paid for a lap dance to this song. The poor girl had no clue, she quit after 3 minutes and then we talked for the last 9 or so minutes. She appreciated the break.
brother...
lmao
This is the most diabolically unhinged thing I've ever read lmfao
I remember in 96. I was 14 and my older brother said here you go little bro and gave me this album cassette tape. I was forever changed by this band. They became and still are my favorite band.
One of the greatest songs ever created.
And I feel like one of their most under-hyped. Sober/lateralus/aenima/right in two get a lot of attention, but push it is one of my faves.
Pushit is my top 3. Lateralus, reflection, and pushit, but not this version.
They have been playing pushit live (last tour) and my goodness I cant remember singing with a crowd so damn hard like that ever. It was sincerely like a love letter to the crowd and the band at the same time. Maynard and Danny gave a massive high five after it. You can tell they enjoyed the feedback from the crowd. Grateful these guys are still together, firm handshakes to all of them.
@@gagelindell271 yeah they played it in Phoenix last year. It was great.
Third eye is the greatest. Aenima is the greatest album of all time.
Actually, Danny's tabla teacher (Aloke Dutta) sat in on this recoding. So there are two drummers for this specific performance.
EDIT: Do the 3rd Eye video from the same show🌀🤘
True, but Danny does simultaneously play some of his mandala drums too and on other live performances has done it without him which is insane to me haha
@tool46n2 Yes, no doubt. 💯 However, the live performance of the "Salival" version they watched is not quite the same as the album version. But I will never go as far as to say he isn't the 🐙 Simply making a factual statement about this specific recording.
And “No Quarter” from this album as well!
😂 I came here specifically to say this.
@@noahbernatz2050 I was surprised I was the 1st

Can’t wait for more Tool reactions from Cristina. It’s always so fun to go on a Tool discovery journey with new folks. 😊

I hate the friend looking over during the whole thing. Like watching a movie with someone that loves it and hoping you laugh at all the same parts.
She has a great insight, and He adds a nice comedic human touch to the show. It's a good dynamic. Hope they both do shows together again in the future.
What I love is that you didn't just focus on Maynard, but also appreciate the other members of the band. It's pretty common to hear people laud Danny's drumming, but Adams guitar and Justin's bass just so seamlessly blend together. The entire musical experience is a mastery. The complexity that Tool puts into their music, yet still producing something beautiful is pretty rare in the rock/metal world. It's more something I'd expect from classical music.
5:12
Rock certainly has angrier music, but when things mellow down, when the acoustic guitars come out, a certain magic happens, and Tool is definitely one of the best at expressing those different layers together.
Thanks for sharing your reaction and thoughts on the song! Looking forward to Lateralus and Parabol/a, if y'all find a chance, though their whole discography has something to offer
You hit the nail on the head with Maynard's movements. I think he is becoming one with the music, and he could careless what people think.
I love tool live, it is a whole experience, the music absolutely belts you in the chest
The last Tool show I saw had preachers at the gates telling the audience that they were entering hell and I waited in line for the bathroom with a guy on several hits of acid freaking out because they started playing Jambi!!
What an amazing night!
One lead singer who I would put in the same league as Maynard in the world of Rock is Skin from Skunk Anansie. They are an old UK band from the 90s and really underrated.
Check out I can dream from their first album, she is phenomenal
In this video, Christina points out the techniques that we, as Tool listeners and fans, have noticed and felt in this track forever. The reason I love good reaction videos is that some experts like her have a depth of understanding to describe the performance with amazing clarity. It's great that she likes and admires it, and even more to break it down.
Listen and digest “Right In Two”, “H”, and “Flood”.
Also, Maynard writes the lyrics around the music.
Pushit is a song that explores the theme of being pushed to the edge by a toxic relationship. The lyrics are written from the perspective of someone who is struggling with their own inner demons and trying to find a way to cope with the pain and anger that they feel towards their partner. The song also reflects on the idea of redemption and forgiveness, as the speaker wants to make things right and heal the wounds that they have inflicted on each other.
There are different interpretations of what the song means, and I think that’s part of its beauty. Some people think that the song is about Maynard James Keenan’s childhood abuse and how he dealt with it as an adult. Others think that the song is about drug addiction and how it affects one’s mental state and relationships. Some even think that the song is about meditation and finding inner peace.
I think that the song can mean different things to different people, depending on their own experiences and emotions. I think that’s what makes Tool such a great band, because they create songs that are not only musically amazing, but also lyrically profound and meaningful. They challenge their listeners to think deeply and critically about themselves and the world around them.
parabol/parabola (just audio) might be a good start.
pushit kinda hard to digest for beginner.
Maynard usually writes the lyrics after hearing the music they don't normally sit together and create
I hope you guys check out the live 1995 performance of their led zepplin cover of "no quarter" in 1995 or 1998 ( i think). Maynard's live performance is amazing on both. Also, you get it with the live performances. I'd love to see her reaction to thom yorke of radiohead with some of his live performances from live from the basement. Then again, I see that Cristina did a cover to a Jeff Buckley song, which means I have no doubt that shes already familiar with radiohead and their work. Either way, I loved seeing your reaction!
I'm obsessed with both Radiohead and Jeff Buckley 😍
@@cristinamrusso Then I think you've already seen and familiar with everything they do. Have you checked out some of Thom Yorke's solo projects or other bands ? If so, then you already know! aside from that, its fun seeing you react to Tool. I can't wait to see you react to other Tool tracks, A Perfect Circle, Deftones, soundgraden, and other artists of the various rock genres and other genres. so many artists and genres, so little time, but the fun is seeing you react to the range of styles. Looking forward to more!
Wow. Great reaction. I just happened to glance down and saw so few subscribers and thought you must be fairly new. You're gonna crush it on this channel (subscribed). 🙏
There’s a little redemption for ya. The studio version of this is worth checking out now. It’s so much better imo.
This liver version really doesn’t do it for me at all. Studio version hits like a ton of bricks though.
Great reaction
I think you really hit the nail on the head with your comments.
Welcome to the other side 🤘🏼🔥👁️
Oh and just to let you know Danny is doing all those sounds .
He has electric pads set up around his kit
when she's breaking down the first part of the song it's giving me goosebumps knowing what's coming up. i'm at just over twelve minutes into this video right now.
Love ya bud
Choosing a favourite Tool song is virtually impossible for me. But I'm so glad you went with this live version of Pushit to listen to. If you told me I could only listen to one Tool song again for the rest of my life it would be this song, and this Salival version. I always find this song when I'm around rock bottom of my depression and it always marks the ascent back to the surface. I was listening to 46 & 2 earlier today in a "I need some Aenima in my head" moment and here I am again back to Pushit. Up we go I guess. Ah Tool, been my best friend since '96. lol. Fuck, I feel old.
Your (Both of you) did such a great analysis of the band, the vocals and the music. I have never seen such a comprehensive breakdown of all the intricacies of these guys. Thank you so much!!
Maynard does a pseudo gregorian chant in 10,000 days :D
I always felt moved by the conflicted nature of this song, and how well it can reflect any abusive relationship, be it addiction, or a toxic relationship with another person. Even in the crescendo, as he's screaming and saying he has to destroy the relationship to survive, he's saying remember I'll always love you, like some part of him STILL wanted to hold on. The inner push and pull Im sure so many of us can relate to in our own lives in whatever we've been through.
Yeah and Maynard is a wine maker too
Wow, what a great Tool reaction. It reminds me of the watching "Tool Fans Being Born", how the eyes of newbs are opened to a whole new world of musical aptitude and complexity

If you would like to hear more of Maynard’s “Gregorian chanting” give Parabol/Parabola a listen. Fantastic song
Another banger. Loving this tool journey for you.
Tool is known for having very long songs and in most of those long songs the dramatic moments build up as it goes, and usually the peak dramatic or interesting moment comes right at the end or right before the end of the song. It can be pointed out in countless tunes of theirs. It's actually a pretty conventional thing for a "prog band". It's cool.
You MUST do a reaction to Lateralus. It’s based on the Fibonacci sequence .
Wonderful reaction. 💕
Nice Plini shirt. Just discovered them and I’m liking them.
You should check out Maynard’s cover of Bohemian Rapsody!
There's a live vid of them doing parabola and his voice cracks lol he takes the mic and throws it full force down on the stage and just walks off. Shows how much they care. One fuck up and he's pissed. I'd be the same way
I just subscribed to you because your knowledge and honest insightful reaction.
If you like the Gregorian chant style try Wings For Marie/10,000 days or Parabol/Parabola. It’s a tabla sound in this, but it’s an electronic sample.
