I’ve been listening since I first saw the video for _Sober_ on MTV (when they still played videos) back in the early 90s, but I think it was AEnima which really took me in. I didn’t even like all of it on first listen. However, the more I played it, the more I began to gain appreciation of it. But now, years later, I can put it on and still catch something. It’s like fine wine, growing richer with age.

The reason why Maynard's voice melody and lyrics sound so perfectly ensconced within TOOL's music, is because Maynard writes his parts specifically off of his personal impressions of the finished composition. This and his lower volume level makes him another instrument in the band, instead of being just a lead singer who noticeably sits on top of the music. Maynard doesn't want to draw too much attention to himself; he knows that he is just one member of this four piece band and has profound respect for what his bandmates are capable of. I think also, because Maynard writes this way, it alows for his true emotions to come through in his voice.

Each of the musicians believes so strongly in the project, as well. They never intended for it to be a commercially successful venture, it was just something they all loved doing. Danny Carey was just interviewed by Rick Beato about a month ago and he talks about the beginning of Tool and how he committed to the band because he loved what they were creating. I think at the time he was playing with Jeff Buckley and doing gigs for Carole King. Amazing, amazing drummer.

@TheVocalyst A Perfect Circle (APC) is a great choice for this channel because you can compare vocal qualities across different bands. APC is still rock, but is more 'traditional' than TOOL's experiemental/progressive musicianship/song length. APC hits that feel much different than TOOL include So Long, And Thanks For All the Fish, 3 Libras, and TalkTalk. Other hit APC songs that are closer to a TOOL vibe include Judith, The Outsider, and Weak And Powerless. All are fun jams. His lyrics tend to be more overt and direct in APC, so his (confrontational) views on religion are very present in songs like TalkTalk and Judith.

This song is extremely spiritual. It stresses how a grudge will cycle back through your life and present differently until you let it go. Sometimes people don't and wonder why negative energy revolves through their life, like a bad cycle. It drags you down, or it will lift you up if you just let it go.

Yep, I can't think of a better band than Tool for people with PTSD, and holding grudges, memories, guilt, blame, trauma, etc - dwelling on it and not letting go of any of it is a centric debilitating part of PTSD.
They have several go-to songs that are perfect for this, and Tool's just overall spectacular for getting yourself a much-needed attitude adjustment anyway, of course.
But as far as mental health goes, they are probably better therapy than any therapist could be. Comes at you one-way so you can just experience it and let it steamroll those bumps in your way, kinda. But they leave you with some nice bitesize mantras you might need to hear, and, yeah. That's a rare ability.

I love moments like this. I can only think of one similar outstanding IRL time but, wow - much more instantaneous. Porcupine Tree, with Robert Fripp from King Crimson opening for them. I was there for PT, but the crowd was mostly old hippie types and were obviously there for Fripp. I knew they had no clue who Porcupine Tree was. This was their Deadwing tour.
PT came on and opened with Open Car - and I knew that around 15 seconds in it was gonna EXPLODE, so I just turned and watched these old dudes to see that moment hit them. Fn PERFECT. It was like those atomic bomb test videos - ka BLAMMO. And in that moment they became enlightened. 🤣
      Yeah yeah. Totally irrelevant. 🥱

Tool often have something tribal. Primordial. Something that speaks to the deepest instincts. Complete organized chaos with a method to the madness. There's always a deeper purpose, a covered-up reason. And don't apologise for fear of not making any sense. You're like a river carving out your natural flow. A river always makes sense in where it goes. Because it's nature that guides its course. You're a natural. Everything you say comes straight from the heart and as such, there's an inability there to become offensive, or for us to take offense for whatever you say. It looked like waves lapping against the beach, or rather, a living organism, 20,000 people all entranced and moving in perfect harmony. I was stone cold sober too. To this day I have yet to feel anything like that, been to hundreds of concerts since, which includes seeing tool 5 more times. It truly was a singular, once in a lifetime feeling, and I'm ok with that, it makes it special.

My dear, I've been listening to TOOL regularly since 1993 and it never gets "old" in the way you sometimes just get tired of hearing a song. TOOL has somehow overcome all typical barriers to being old, while simultaneously seeming "new" that can fit into any aged timeframe every time you listen to them. It's uncanny, yet this is the singular twist that keeps everyone hooked on their music.

Not only did it do sick burnouts, it had a beastly stereo system in it. He says check out the "system" in it and plays this album cranked to max volume. These guys blew my friggin mind! My mom and dad listened to classic rock and oldies, so I had never heard anything like it. I was hooked and it started my journey into heavy metal and other types of music.

Absolutely one of my favorites, but unfortunately, she has like 10 higher priority songs to get to first but who knows, maybe one day. The big payoff is that even after hearing a dozen Tool tracks, I bet the Patient will still strike a raw nerve and get through to her.

@@PaulMella-f4b sometimes I can't even accept one song on that album as my favorite. I hear parabol and parabola together and it sometimes takes me back to when I purchased the CD, put it into my CD player in my truck (cuz I couldn't wait til I go home to listen to it) and just the absolute drive from the drums almost like an engine/motor pushing the entirety of the band/music into a new plane, just can still grab my complete and total focus. But then those harmonies and sincerity of emotion comes out in The Patient and what I was going through in my life at the time, and it...... I just can't explain it man.

    • @PaulMella-f4b
      @PaulMella-f4b 8 месяцев назад

I have my own fond memories of that album. My friend had just gotten his first car, and gas was relatively cheap back then, so when the rare summer rains would come, we would just drive on the back roads of the towns we lived in listening to Lateralus (yes, for 1h+ at a time). Listening to Lateralus during a thunderstorm smelling that fresh air from the rain is a memory I think I'll have until my deathbed.
So yeah, I think she'll have a strong reaction to hearing The Patient when she gets to it, but that's to be expected for the whole album.
I was fortunate enough to see Tool twice during the Lateralus touring days, so I think the only "real" song I haven't heard live is Ticks and Leeches. They even played Triad live with Meshuggah!
I admit The Grudge was a surprise reaction video I wasn't expecting yet, but I was very happy with it since it's the song of the night during their recent tours. Realistically, I think any further reactions from her on this album would be
      Schism
      Parabol/Parabola
      Lateralus (best song)
      And then maybe The Patient

That was after this album. He was highly involved from opiate to lateralus. He kinda lost the fight to the other 3 and chose to step back 10000 days and on. Mainly due to creating apc and trying to make puscifer big. Ha big puscifer

Two of my favourite Tool songs are “Lateralus”, and “Right in Two”. Of course, everyone has their particular favorites, but Tool has such an eclectic catalogue that you could pretty much blindly pick any song and be happily surprised.
    Looking forward to more reactions.

I came to recommend “lateralus”. The live version of “pushit” hits sooo hard.

I could sit down and listen to you dissect Tool for 9 hours straight. More please!! You should check out Wings for Marie Pt. 2. It's a tribute that Maynard wrote to his mother after she passed and it is incredible.

Your reactions are so good! Its so beautiful and personally validating watching you enjoy music I first enjoyed when I was a teenager. I couldn't describe to people why I loved it so much and it's like you're giving me the words I never had!
I'd love you to do Around the fur by Deftones

He was trying for 29.5 seconds, Saturn's orbital period. The planet being in the lyrics.
The -now- BJJ black belt threw up after the recorded attempt.

The mixture of timing signatures is a signature too.
