I love how at the end of each verse the line about communication changes. Verse one: Testing our communication Verse two: Crippling our communication Verse three: Rediscover communication Verse four: And strengthen our communication It’s like a roadmap to relationships. When the communication is broken you slowly need to rediscover it and eventually strengthen it.
The Grudge by Tool, would be awesome if you analyzed it. That song literally broke me down to tears as I realized what I had been holding onto for years has been pulling me down into the depths of despair. Plus he lets out a scream for like 40 seconds.
@@bloodblitzowns11 A mindset of "winning" an argument is the antithesis of compassion. When I have a conflict with my partner the first thing I do is give up trying to convince them I am "right." Instead {if they are stable enough) I ask without any sarcasm to explain what they are feeling and thinking, then repeat it as best I can in my own words. Once they agree I understand often the conflict is over. When it is not they ASK me to explain my side - reciprocation. This will only work if both of you truly still care about each other. The are other techniques but being mindful of your own emotional state and learning listen to it in a way that allows you to calm down is at the heart of all of that.
This song, along with other Tool songs, kinda wrecked me emotionally after my first break up. I didn't know anything about connecting with other people since I was 17, didn't realize I was autistic, and feeling things at levels I had never felt before. Tool simultaneously destroyed and saved me.
Sometimes the only way we can be saved is when our ego is destroyed. I'm glad you had tool to help guide you and this makes me smile at their name. We really can use their music as a tool to guide and teach us through tough times
"We often hear with our pain" is such an important takeaway for me. My husband and I dont really "fight" (we aren't the type to yell or god forbid be physical), but we do often get fussy with eachother because one or both of us don't communicate what we need properly (like asking, "do you need to vent or do you need advice?"). We're working on it! I know the pieces fit 🖤
I usually don't like watching people react to Tool music videos because they are usually to distracted by the video to really hear the song but i really enjoyed your reaction and appreciate that you sent so much time on the lyrics. Tool has great lyrics to analyze. Just subscribed and hope to hear more Tool from you. Thank you.
I love how people hear Tool for the first time and almost with certainty they proceed to be blown the F away. Tool isn’t just music, tool is an experience. Looks like she is going to be another soldier in the Tool army!
This song is so powerful on explaining relationships and communication. Not just love relationships, but our relationships with everything and everyone we interact with.
That opening bass riff is one of the best in the history of the genre in my opinion. If you close your eyes and listen to it, it's just as much a math equation as it is music. Brilliance rarely emerges from a stable mind.
This album has literally been a life changer for me. This might be the best reaction to this song that I’ve seen. Even though you watched the video on the first listen. It’s awesome seeing the lyrics being so appreciated.
This is one of my favorite Tool songs. I usually do not analyze the words and the meaning of it, so you digging in deep to the meaning of the song is fascinating. Thank you.
Never knew I needed a Therapist’s breakdown of this. You confirm the poetic genius that I believed was there but was just beyond my understanding. Thank You. PLEASE do The Pot by Tool.
This song has a deep place in my heart. The "cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion" line and "i know the pieces fit" always hit me really hard.
The song is about a relationship being ruined beyond repair due to poor or no constructive communication, and attempts at it either go nowhere or make it worse. It's a song of desperation and despair
Two of the greatest experiences in my life; discovering Tool, and finally going to rehab/therapy. I am SO PUMPED for the rest of your Tool journey. “Wings for Marie” “Right in Two” and “Vicarious” would be my next picks!
Seeing your video pop up in my suggestions, I was initially skeptical. Admittedly, the thumbnail had me thinking you'd be dismissive of the subject matter. But after a few minutes in, I was absolutely stunned. You broke down an amzing song (that I've enjoyed for over a decade) in an exceptionally enlightening way, instead of a cold and clinical manner; in a way I'd never considered, but wished I always had. You've taught me so much in such a short span of time, and I cannot thank you enough. You have yourself a new subscriber. Cheers!
Tool's music, especially their lyricism, the literal meaning of their songs if one were to truly listen to them, is lightyears ahead of their/our time. They're phenomenal!
Consider this that Manyard could have oobe and travel throught spiral in any direction and connected so good and specific talented people and with him all, he is an astonishing artist.
This is the most amazing interpretation of this song. All I wanted was for my ex wife to listen to this song to help her understand my perspective on our relationship and lack of communication. She just thought TOOL was demonic and wouldn't let me listen to them for or 12 year relationship. This song is so profound and beautifully written. I just wish she could have heard it and listened with an open heart and mind. Thank you for recognizing this song for all its beauty and power
We fought every day with intense passion with my beloved wife....We couldn't stop....years later I now realize we fought so we could be closer - to connect even more deeply. I still love her so much. WE just couldn't find another way to touch each other.
The song is absolutely about relationships and conflict but also about repairing and rebuilding off the existing foundations of those relationships. The song, if I recall correctly, was written about the conflict that existed within the band at that time that was preventing them from writing new music and touring.
I love this little info-nugget "we have a problem in our group relationship that keeps us from writing songs... let's write a song about that." bloody brilliant.
After 34 years & everyday listening to my fav band here seeing people reacting to them takes me rate back 34 years ago hearing my fav band for the first time. These reactions breathe new life into me through passion of enthusiasm. This band isnt just a band these 4 extraterrestrials have saved my life more than i can count. This band got me through Bladder & Prostate Cancer in 2021. After my coma i would rediscover them like it was brand new again for me like time stood still. Then in 2013 after my baby died this band kept me alive daily. Now while i battle shingles for the second month once again my fav band is getting me through my pain internally & externally. T📀💿L = Life for Me. 🤘🏼 Being so intense & hardcore fot this band is keeping me alive & loving life so much. The past 34 years with my fav band i have grown spiritually & have become so calm.
It is so incredibly crazy to me that 90% of all pop music is about the emotional pain of, sometimes just temporarily, disfunctional relationships and tool makes one song that covers all that and just gives a well educated solution to the problem. An absolute masterpiece.
This song helped me through a bad breakup. Because of that, Tool became my favourite band on the planet. Thanks so much for analyzing this song so articulately and accurately.
The whole Lateralus album is an absolute journey. If I hit a point in life where my anxiety and stress levels push me to the brink, I listen to that album and it brings me down from the emotional ledge. I can't recommend the whole album enough. And then the art of Alex Grey (does the art/album covers for TOOL) is also fun for the mind.
Honestly.. it makes me wanna cry seeing a woman understand this song.. because mine didnt. Wanted to argue about everything no matter how hard i tried to communicate.. And it all fell apart in the end and i lost the woman i was in love with for over a decade and my "family" which was her and all my 3 kids. I still see them.. but its not the same.. never will be for me.. just have to make sure i make the best of it for THEM so they still have something to save from it all. As hard as she tries to make that. Couldnt even explain if i tried. Someone out there wish me luck

And now you co-parent your children together but it seems like you still feel a lot of pain. That sounds so so difficult to have gone through and my heart absolutely goes out to you. I imagine that trying your best and putting so much of yourself out there, only for things to still not work out, is so so exhausting. I imagine feeling powerless and frustrated and defeated at the end of it all. I do not judge you in the slightest for how you're feeling. For much of my life, I struggled to make the pieces fit with other people. I can't say ive lost something that was perfect - but the hindsight there is 20/20. I *have* lost relationships with people where I thought things were a great fit. In that pain, I found a lot of myself. For me, what I thought was open communication wasn't as good as it could've been. I learned that my anxieties spilled into my relationships in a way that put my partners on edge and made them defensive against me. In that, I'm saying that splitting up gave me a moment to reflect and do better. And become better. And even though I currently co-parent an 8 year old, that opportunity to grow and do better and be better sets my daughter up for the best chances of success. All of that being said, I dont know your experiences or what you've gone through. Your situation may not be the same at all. But I think there are things to learn everywhere. Positive takeaways that can set your and your kids future up for success. I am proud of you for your perseverance and capability. I hope you are safe and that your family is ok. If you ever need to write back, feel free to keep us updated on your life. On what's happening. Feel free to vent. We're here to shoulder some of that burden with you. Hold fast, friend.

Amazing review video, and one of my favourite songs ever. This made me think more about the meaning, and I had goosebumps multiple times. You are doing some real higher power work here and I applaud it 🎉
A song from this album called The Patient helped me see a clearer picture of my depression and obsessive worrying and panic. The lyrics “I must keep reminding myself of this” was my anthem, it was my OCD telling me I needed/had to worry… but that line also stood for the coping work I had to practice relentlessly to break the cycle of thinking. It’s hard to explain. This album came out about a year after my symptoms really came on. And I honestly credit it with helping to save my life. Almost the entire album is like this. It’s been 24 years since my symptoms started. I’m stable, healthy, married with two astounding children. I give God credit for all good things. But these guys and they’re music have given my emotions a voice since I was 13 years old. ❤️
This song is therapeutic but watching you vibe and appreciate the goodness of the song and its message is even more therapeutic! Yeah, I'll be watching this video multiple times. I super appreciate your messages you put out but I appreciate your genuine energy even more. Thanks for doing this!
I LOVE watching people react to Tool. Their lyrics are so amazing and I'm so glad you could see that and point it out to people. My favorite song by them is Parabola. It's a reminder for me, in the throes of depression, that I chose to be here and the pain I feel is an illusion even tho it feels devastating. Yep you're on point. In the video 3:08 she understood that too! :D
YES 🙌🏼
I love how each verse ends with the word "communication"
We all need to rediscover communication a little bit better don’t we? Maynard was simply trying to reinforce and drive the thought process home.
and the bridge ends with the word "Compassion"
I love how at the end of each verse the line about communication changes.
Verse one:
Testing our communication
Verse two:
Crippling our communication
Verse three:
Rediscover communication
Verse four:
And strengthen our communication
It’s like a roadmap to relationships. When the communication is broken you slowly need to rediscover it and eventually strengthen it.
The Grudge by Tool, would be awesome if you analyzed it. That song literally broke me down to tears as I realized what I had been holding onto for years has been pulling me down into the depths of despair. Plus he lets out a scream for like 40 seconds.
agree the grudge would be a great reaction
Love the Grudge
Could not agree more
I think she would really appreciate The Grudge.
Absolutely should be reviewed next. What a song to EXPERIENCE!👍🤘🌀
These guys are on another level and can't be touched 💯🔥
Spiral out
Keep going 💛
I really love the line about "Finding beauty in the dissonance" even conflict can be beautiful when you have the tools to keep your compassion.
Is it me or does the music become less dissonant itself as the song progresses? I don’t think I’ve heard anyone mention it, yet.
Do you have any advice for keeping compassion?
@danielcarter94 I guess it depends on weather you mean the musical notes or the harmonious nature of the lyrics
@@XathexX this was actually beautiful, thank you
This song, along with other Tool songs, kinda wrecked me emotionally after my first break up.
Tool is way deeper than most folks realize. Truthfully a beautiful band in total.
Congratulations, you are now full immersed in the Tool experience
Just wait till she hears Parabol & Parabola 😏
You should do the whole discography. They are all phenomenal
Tool has been 1 of my favorite bands for 30 years now. Their music has been a comfort to me for so long!❤
The drummer for tool is one of the best 5 ever
Danny is your drummer's favorite drummer.
Danny is 4 of them.
The best for Tool
The best for Tool
That opening bass riff is one of the best in the history of the genre in my opinion. If you close your eyes and listen to it, it's just as much a math equation as it is music. Brilliance rarely emerges from a stable mind.
This album has literally been a life changer for me. This might be the best reaction to this song that I’ve seen. Even though you watched the video on the first listen. It’s awesome seeing the lyrics being so appreciated.
This is one of my favorite Tool songs. I usually do not analyze the words and the meaning of it, so you digging in deep to the meaning of the song is fascinating.
Thank you.
As a therapist, you should absolutely go down the Aenima rabbit hole. Their most impressive album; I will stand by that.
"What is this?"
The best thing your ears will ever receive.
Crazy that this song is almost 20 years old.
Tool and a bon fire are a giant part of my therapy
Therapist...you tell it like it is and a heartfelt reaction from you! Thanks for the show.
Two of the greatest experiences in my life; discovering Tool, and finally going to rehab/therapy.
I am SO PUMPED for the rest of your Tool journey. “Wings for Marie” “Right in Two” and “Vicarious” would be my next picks!
14 years clean here, congratulations on your recovery. Stay the course my friend, it can be done ❤️
Tool puts me in a state of mind where I can deal with anything. Their music is able to open my mind and comfort my soul even if life beats me down.
It would be very interesting to hear your analysis of TOOL's songs Wings for Marie (Pt1) and 10,000 days (Wings Pt2).
Yes !!
Great reaction
Maynard will be proud 😀
Please do more TOOL!!! ALL of their songs are so good and such a good TOOL to use for any issues you’re going through!
From another dimension
This is the most amazing interpretation of this song. All I wanted was for my ex wife to listen to this song to help her understand my perspective on our relationship and lack of communication. She just thought TOOL was demonic and wouldn't let me listen to them for or 12 year relationship. This song is so profound and beautifully written. I just wish she could have heard it and listened with an open heart and mind. Thank you for recognizing this song for all its beauty and power
Your five best songs are fixing to be all TOOL songs, and you're gonna need a bigger number.
She was always a Tool fan she just didn't know it 🤙
Yea he writes some good lyrics. They're one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Total perfection on stage.
Tool is the most incredible sonic and lyrical journey you'll ever experience!!
The song, if I recall correctly, was written about the conflict that existed within the band at that time that was preventing them from writing new music and touring.
yes, but also it's definitely about 2 guys trying to put together a furniture set from Ikea on the weekend
@@Requiem4aDr3Am lmfao! This is the best reply ever haha! That made my morning.
@@anoceanbetweenus89 I aim to please. Thank you
I love this little info-nugget
"we have a problem in our group relationship that keeps us from writing songs... let's write a song about that."
bloody brilliant.
Being so intense & hardcore fot this band is keeping me alive & loving life so much.
The past 34 years with my fav band i have grown spiritually & have become so calm.
I was hoping you would do more tool. Nice.
It is so incredibly crazy to me that 90% of all pop music is about the emotional pain of, sometimes just temporarily, disfunctional relationships and tool makes one song that covers all that and just gives a well educated solution to the problem.
An absolute masterpiece.
Tool is always like a therapy session!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought it was Adam Jones, the band's guitarist.
@@laurabuer4714 Alex Jones also does special effects and stop motion. I bet they collaborate on the album covers.
“Hear with your pain” is the best way to describe that. I wish I’d had those words in many situations.
Adam Jones, the guitarist, does the videos. He has done special effects for movies like Jurassic Park and Terminator. Creepy, indeed, but creative af.
Honestly.. it makes me wanna cry seeing a woman understand this song.. because mine didnt.
From DyllonKG: @J-RAD_notAnNpc Hey my friend.
Firstly, thank you so much for bearing your soul and posting a comment here. This had to be difficult to go through and Im proud of you for opening up.
In your post you mention a fallout between you and your wife. You talked about how you tried to communicate, be open, and build a bridge but that it all fell apart despite your best efforts.

Nice. I don't know a ton of Tool. This is a great song, though. The Bassline is iconic.
Well, it will be interesting to see how far down the rabbit hole you go with this. Plenty of material that makes a message in a musical format that some people immediately dismiss. Tool fans love watching people break things down and understand what we have listened to for decades.
Really enjoying these videos. Stinkfist is a great one for this style of analysis. Deals with our constant need for more stimulation.
I agree I have struggled with addiction for years, Stinkfist helped me recognize my triggers
Plus it’s also about fisting, because Maynard is a little bit clever that way.
Amazing review video, and one of my favourite songs ever. This made me think more about the meaning, and I had goosebumps multiple times. You are doing some real higher power work here and I applaud it 🎉
❤ your analysis! Any song on the Lateralus album you're going to be blown away by the wisdom of the lyrics.
PS Yes Tool videos are too distracting lol
Baked potatoes don't sprout. They're baked. Just saying.
Definitely
Haha😂
Didja ever think she knows that and it was just a mix up? Just saying :)
This song is therapeutic but watching you vibe and appreciate the goodness of the song and its message is even more therapeutic! Yeah, I'll be watching this video multiple times. I super appreciate your messages you put out but I appreciate your genuine energy even more. Thanks for doing this!
Tool is not just a music it is a message. Love it 💛🖐️
I LOVE watching people react to Tool. Their lyrics are so amazing and I'm so glad you could see that and point it out to people. My favorite song by them is Parabola. It's a reminder for me, in the throes of depression, that I chose to be here and the pain I feel is an illusion even tho it feels devastating. It's helpful for me to be able to separate myself from the pain so I can examine it from a higher perspective
I wrote an essay on this song and video for AP psychology back in hs. Love it.
I love the fact that fear is your first response to this song. That is the root of separation of trust. The meaning behind this song.
Wow this an amazing breakdown for new listen to Tool to take this much away so quickly! I love to hear your breakdown to their Song Pushit, live vision or studio. I think you are going to gain some wisdom from almost everyone of their songs.
Tool music has been some.of the best therapy I have received over the last 3 decades.
This is why tool is top shelf maynard really be giving wisdom that can not only be seen thru different lenses but it resonates with individual situations of the listeners its a really special thing
Loved this review… I actually sent an ex the lyrics to this song about a decade ago because I felt it was what we were going through (she didn’t get it) but thanks for reinforcing that ideal about this song.. TOOL is usually open for all kinds of interpretations, and meant to be a TOOL for your own journey, take it how u will/no right or wrong interpretation, but you nailed it
Been a life long fan of Tool. Trying to analyze any Tool video for both the lyrics and video is a huge challenge. I always tell my wife that I listen more to the music than the lyrics, but after hearing your analysis of the lyrics, it reminds me how amazing Maynard is as a lyricist.
This piece is really SUPERIOR, musically, philosophically, lyrically...and visually, too❤✌ ...well, like many of them .. 😜
I love blasting tool songs LOUD as possible. Even while driving. Sorry not sorry lol. Everyone needs to listen to TOOL!
Out of all the awesome music from this era or any era for that matter, Tool is/was the GOAT in my humble opinion....profoundly deep and excellently executed...
The first time I heard this song I thought it was a call to world peace.
I guess it all starts with number 1.
Yeeees girl! Speak truth! Everything you said were so relevant and well interpreted
I want to show my therapist your channel. Music is a HUGE side talking point in my sessions and i think you would have been an amazing therapist for me.
Keep doing your thing, youre great!
I've said it a million times; Schism is the best break up song ever. I loved your reaction, I used to listen to this song as a kid and never really paid much attention to lyrics/never really understood them. As an adult I rediscovered the song and it blew me away.
I suggest you give all tool songs a listen. It really will open up the mind
8:26 i mean...she's not wrong. When people lose their willingness to hear another person, conflict is inevitable.
I cant believe you are reacting to Tool my favorite band of all time and Ren my favorite musican on earth right now. So its safe to say im really digging your content!!! Thank You..
Finally a normal person understands Tools music. It gets very deep down the rabbit hole
This song has always been amazing to me. It literally says what I am feeling and been going through.
Tool is a whole different level. Between numbers, tempo, lyrics, and just everything in between. Very intelligent person.
THE GRUDGE is AMAZING and you will LOVE IT!
Ive heard this song so many times and listening to it today and hearing your take on it are really uncovering things within my own marriage. Ive been looking for a couples therapy. Amazed at how much this helps. Thats why I love Tool. Have since I was a teenager.
Thanks going through Tool’s music Psychology… hope you keep it up and don’t stop! Remember to have always the Lyrics with you…
Tool is such a great band, with so many gems, right in two, vicarious, lateralus, could just write every song to check out :D
Love all of maynard projects
"This song did my job for me" I won't get into it, but Tool brought me back. I'm not "healed", but man did I get them when I needed them most
