Glad you reacted to Vicarious. 10,000 Days is easily the best Tool album from a lyrical standpoint, in my opinion. It's also got gems like: "Repugnant is the creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of our fleeting time here."
Nonsensical wankery. There's plenty of good people doing good things. Practically every day we have stories about people risking their lives for strangers, and even animals. True, we're not actually angels. We're humans. But we, as a species, do have a touch of grace, a touch of the angelic.
I agree, I also like to point out that it does not say will always be. I think this leaves the option of choice. One can only choose a new path if one is aware of the present and past. Know we are creatures and choose a path to grow.
It’s also about morbid curiosity. When suffering is happening on a screen, it feels like a safe way to watch the worst parts of the human experience, knowing that it’s not happening to us or people we know. It’s a way to finally be a secret observer of the most heinous acts. It’s the same as not being able to look away from car accidents
This is the best way I've heard it explained. Not necessarily sadistic energy, just an expression of the Shadow. Honestly, their is probably a weird good that can come from safely tapping into that part of ourselves.
I've never taken the lyrics to say that we derive "joy" from the suffering of others, I've taken it to be something much more basic, as in a hunger that needs fed, with zero emotion at all. Just something we're drawn to because there's this part of our psyche that needs fed.

He actually explained this during the Salival tour (if you will). The difference in hate and anger. Destructive and constructive behaviors. Anger is constructive because instead of fighting someone, he’s gonna create a song and sing his anger out. Hate would have him doing physical damage to himself and others. It’s also why he doesn’t scream much anymore. When he does, it’s extremely selective and has major purpose. What good does it do someone to continue to scream about the same things over and over? There is no growth. I digress. Your reaction video had me in tears. Thank you for that. The more people begin to hear the depth of Tool, the more free we become… I know that sounds weird, but some of us cannot afford therapy lol. Tool is exactly that. A Tool, to be used, I believe, for the ultimate self awakening. Thank you again.
Your perspective and readings on Tool's music is some of the most insightful and thoughtful I've seen out of all these "reaction" type videos. I also really appreciate that you read the lyrics along with the music. Would really love for you to keep going with Tool. Your thoughts on The Grudge, Parabol/Parabola and Disposition/Reflection would be incredibly interesting as those are songs that really helped me through my own mental health journey and gave me some new perspective on myself. Love the work you do!
To be honest, if you have never experienced death, tragedy and anger in life you can't be part of a vicarious world, this song helps the brain to understand more and more about us as wild creatures that we are, more in theses days in which we don't know nothing about what is real or a lie.
I’ve received so much joy from watching you listen to Tool. It seems silly to say but they’ve pulled me from some of the darkest places I’ve been. That being said I’ll throw my two cents in. H. , jimmy, the Patient, and the wings for Marie 10,000 days (wings part 2) consistently have tears streaming down my face
It’s not silly at all! I’m in the same boat, and eternally grateful that I found Tool (and the strength in myself) to pull myself out of dark times as well. I’m glad you made it too!!
Understanding 46&2 changed my life and is a great song for you to explore. Understanding and accepting our shadow is a reoccurring Tool theme. I would love to see you explore H. - I think it is about raising a child and thanking them for "considerately killing me' so I can become what they deserve while always being mindful of my past habits. Also Jimmy is a good one for you.
Essentially this song is about empathy , it has so many subjects . This is one signature about tool songs , they can be interpreted from many perspectives
There's no joy. It feeds. And we never actually "care"...it doesn't press us, because we are entirely desensitized. It's a song about human nature and loneliness combined by the effect of mass media.
The song is about the nature of humanity. We feed the algorithm. We feed by tuning in to what the media is showing us. And it's inate. We are an animal that has always fed on tragedy. Overtaking each other. Fighting for the land. Money. Power. Etc...
This song has always meant to me, that there is a part in EVERYBODY that takes joy from others pain and suffering because it makes people feel better about themselves and their lives. I love Maynard for that because he'll pick at these topics and these mannerisms that people don't want to admit about themselves and act like they walk such a high road. Great pick on this one, I LOVE this song!
Loved this analysis! I've always been an observer and a people watcher so I naturally experience the joys of watching someone else's suffering, but I've never let it turn me into someone that cheers for it. You put it so well, to use that energy, anger, or passion into a more positive means. I know it's a massive part of being a therapist, but I just love the objective lens you view the lyrics through and how you dissect them. I haven't scrolled through enough comments to see anybody request Wings for Marie by Tool, so here's my vote in the hat!
Swing on the spiral and still be a human... Yeahhh I made an animatic with this as the soundtrack. Mentors said remove the music but... that kinda missed the point.. its on my channel titled A Knight Reborn - Video Game Concept / Animatic
The Red Wedding is the prefect example of the joy that can be gotten from watching others suffer. Just look at how many reaction videos have been made due to that one sence.
I respectfully disagree. I think their videos are intrinsic to the lyrics and the meaning of the song as a whole. The visuals alone are like poetry. I'm a visual artist myself, though. So I tend to look at visual art as poetry.
You are such a great therapist. I don't know if I could have you as mine, because I wouldn't be able to focus, due to you beauty. Love your content. Just discovered you channel. Loving it.
You'll hear this a lot. Don't watch the official videos when listening to Tool at first glance. It's distracting. I love Adam's artistic creativity, but it does draw away from the music and lyrics. Circle back to it later. Edit: I never took it to be that harm happening to others makes us feel better, but that we're relieved that it didn't happen to *us*. But there is a sense of the Coliseum, right? Watching people fight for their lives. That basement level of entertainment? Tool is very deep.
learned about tool when i was tripping very hard a friend of mine showed it to me (he knew me well enough to know i would be okay with it) and i've never been the same the trip went very deep into the core of who i am as a person i got to know myself that day and it changed my life for the better
14:52 "If it's something you are going to observe and consume anyway, may as well use it as good" Well said. Great reaction and great understanding of the message of an amazing song!
I thought I was going to laugh or have a giggle at how she might patronize their lyrics. But I was so pleasantly surprised when she listened to it and empathized DARKLY and understood the nature of it. BRAVO. Very very proud. It's so rare to see such an excellent mind at work. Two thumbs up!
I want to bring up the concept of compersion (uncountable) 1. The feeling of joy one has experiencing another's joy, such as in witnessing a toddler's joy and feeling joy in response. 2. The feeling of joy associated with seeing a loved one love another; contrasted with jealousy. According to Wikipedia this was coined in reference as a romantic opposite to jealousy. However I have been using it as a non-romantic sense and to remind myself I CAN experience joy from another's joy and to actively look for it.
I wouldn’t say you can’t vicariously experience positive things happen to other people and feel good about it. I love those videos where people go buy like $1000 of food and feed the homeless or they help small businesses or help someone accomplish some goal they’ve been working towards. It definitely works more than one way. Also Danny’s tom work in this song sends me. Especially in the crescendo at the end around “credulous at best”
you have helped me view tool much differently than I used to. I used to think tool was just music that you'd listen to while tripping on acid but I've come to realize that its much deeper than that. the acid trip is just the journey that tool takes you on while you're tripping. what they're really trying to teach you is very deep emotional processing. I think coupling this way of thinking with the trip would be very eye opening.
"We don't give pause until the blood is flowing". Goes back to the adage about television...if it bleeds it leads. If it's not sensational enough no one pays attention. It's a very unfortunate fact of life for many
It was hard for me to concentrate on the lyrics of this song and the musical instrumentations and instead my eyes were just mesmerized by the visual conceptions of the music video. Absolutely amazing and gorgeous video and major kudos to whoever created this visual work of art.
My feeling about this song is that it describes the reaction to the numbing/enervating effect of alienation. The disconnection of modern life, living to work, leaves us starved for some form of emotional experience that we take from the most extreme source that is constantly presented to us (the unfolding human tragedy brought to you 24/7 by the news). Watching the pain of others to remind us what it is to be human. I find myself doing it with reaction channels. Anyone watching Band of Brothers, you watch them react to Why We Fight, and you share an emotive response.
I was 4:20 in and was like nooooo that doesn't seem right. Enjoying other people's suffering? No, people become characters in a drama we enjoy - we don't enjoy that they're suffering
Loved it. I will definitely say with Tool, the music video has its own meaning alongside some parallels with the lyrics but not always. Adam Jones, the guitarist usually has done the videos. From what I remember from an old interview, it's that he wants the music video to go alongside the music but not necessarily lyrically. It's why it all seems abstract when trying to tie it to Maynard's lyrics.
watching people try to "bop" to TOOL time signatures never gets old.
One thing I love about Tool is you can always find a beat, not "the beat" but a beat. 😂

An odd time signature is even if you head bang on the eighth notes instead of the quarter note.
It's not hard to do. She's just weird and awkward about it, no matter if it's the most solid 4/4 or 12/8 (like parts of this song)

Your reactions are so refreshing! I love watching Tool reactions and you’ve found a really fascinating approach to yours. Well done, subbing!
Hardest line = The universe is hostile, so impersonal
Devour to survive, so it is, so it's always been
I like to watch things die beats that 1000%
Always been my favorite line of this song cuz it’s so real
Tool really is a treasure trove for internal and societal examination.
All their work better be in the Smithsonian fr
Your perspective and readings on Tool's music is some of the most insightful and thoughtful I've seen out of all these "reaction" type videos. I also really appreciate that you read the lyrics along with the music. Would really love for you to keep going with Tool. Your thoughts on The Grudge, Parabol/Parabola and Disposition/Reflection would be incredibly interesting as those are songs that really helped me through my own mental health journey and gave me some new perspective on myself. Love the work you do!
This is the song that got me into Tool. It will always be a part of me.
Part of Me is so good...I had to lol
To be honest, if you have never experienced death, tragedy and anger in life you can't be part of a vicarious world, this song helps the brain to understand more and more about us as wild creatures that we are, more in theses days in which we don't know nothing about what is real or a lie.
Puscifer - Mama Sed
Live version from
"What is........ Puscifer"
They crafted their art in the town of schadenfreude. Sounds like you’re spot on. I love these.
Not silly one bit 🌀🤘🤝
You have such a vigorous and beautiful insight and I enjoy watching your reactions to some of my favorite music.
It speaks to the human condition bindings us all. Suffering through joy, pleasure in pain. Between apathy and empathy lies our therapy.
Do The Patient next please
By far the most underrated Tool song in my opinion. And I agree, would love to hear her analysis of those lyrics.
Essentially this song is about empathy , it has so many subjects . This is one signature about tool songs , they can be interpreted from many perspectives
very bright young lady. she chose the right career path for sure. extremely deep thinker. great job!
Your videos are so uplifting, and fruitful. Makes me smile to watch you experience TOOL. ❤
TOOL is Pink Floyd for the new millennium.
🤘🧙♂🤘
🤔🧐👏👏👏🌚🔺🌈
Yikes...not even close...Tool is another animal. But I respect your perspective. 😊
Different animals. But point taken, both are bands whose music makes you think.
My fav Tool song hands down!!!!
There's no joy. It feeds. And we never actually "care"...it doesn't press us, because we are entirely desensitized. It's a song about human nature and loneliness combined by the effect of mass media.
I love watching your videos I learn something new every time. Thank you for doing this
I think you should listen to "Prison sex" by Tool.
Kneeled down, hands bound…
Exactly. For a therapist, "Vicarous" can be unpacked well before the session's over.
And the downward spiral of "Undertow" is up there with me.
No 🤣😳
I actually read back in the day that therapists were using the song to help abuse victims deal with their trauma.
"Do unto you now, what has been done to me"
The song is about the nature of humanity. We feed the algorithm. We feed by tuning in to what the media is showing us. And it's inate. We are an animal that has always fed on tragedy. Overtaking each other. Fighting for the land. Money. Power. Etc...
That bass though!
Justin is such a vibe
You are incredibly good at analyzing meaningful lyrics!I'm so glad I found your channel,I absolutely love it!❤
Disillusioned by A Perfect Circle would be great too!
By and Down 💯🔥
Disillusioned is f*cking phenominal....
It’s not that it brings joy it’s the fact that pain, blood, destruction, violence is captivating or entertaining we can’t look away.
Your reactions/reviews are really good. Very insightful. I’d love to hear what you think of pushit by tool.
Me too! I just hope she does the live version from Salival, if she does.
Live!!
What a heart wrenching experience for those of us that have had toxic relationships.
Lateralus. My all time fav tool. Album.
That my 3rd favorite Tool Album behind Anemia , and 10000 Days
Loved this analysis! I've always been an observer and a people watcher so I naturally experience the joys of watching someone else's suffering, but I've never let it turn me into someone that cheers for it. You put it so well, to use that energy, anger, or passion into a more positive means. I know it's a massive part of being a therapist, but I just love the objective lens you view the lyrics through and how you dissect them.
I haven't scrolled through enough comments to see anybody request Wings for Marie by Tool, so here's my vote in the hat!
Laterals. Best Tool song the universe ever conceived.
Stinkfist (Tool) or The Package (A Perfect Circle) are my suggestions
Hell yeah, the grudge is a good one too...also, stay away from the videos, they have nothing to do with the song and only distract from the lyrics
Tool is very deep.
lol i was def getting ' making my way downtown" vibes from your dancing at the beginning of the video haha
Schadenfreude
I reckon this goes beyond schadenfreude
The ultimate treatise of our twisted mankind, put to music.
Been a Tool fan for years, and your analyses actually brings out some things I hadn't really noticed or considered before. Enjoying these videos!
learned about tool when i was tripping very hard a friend of mine showed it to me (he knew me well enough to know i would be okay with it) and i've never been the same the trip went very deep into the core of who i am as a person i got to know myself that day and it changed my life for the better
14:52 "If it's something you are going to observe and consume anyway, may as well use it as good"
Well said. Great reaction and great understanding of the message of an amazing song!
Thanks so much for the support! Glad you liked it! - T
This song is beyond brilliant, a masterpiece among masterpieces.
Great song. Please cover every Tool song. They are my favorite. 46 and 2, schism, and vicarious are my jams
Your energy is fantastic. Love all your videos!❤
I want to bring up the concept of compersion (uncountable)
However I have been using it as a non-romantic sense and to remind myself I CAN experience joy from another's joy and to actively look for it.
it makes us feel good because it reminds us of how bad things can be . and makes us grateful its not us
This whole album is quiet the experience and mental journie. enjoying your content.
Taylor has the BEST reactions ever!!!!
Tool is deep, I always recommend having the lyrics available when first listening to their songs
I really Dig You,. I think you have nailed every TOOL song, thus far......BRAVO!!!!!
Haha. In your prior Tool video I mentioned that you’d have a field day with this one - glad you reviewed it!
You are the only reactor that saw this song the way I do.
Saw this tour and have seen them twice since then.
Thanks for finally “validating” me lol
Love how you you listen to the people in the comments. You got it recommended so often.
We heard the people so we answered.

As with anything TOOL this is as surreal as it gets. Love this band.❤😊
Keep listening to my favorite metal. I am learning so much.
Glad you like it! - T
"We don't give pause until the blood is flowing". Goes back to the adage about television...if it bleeds it leads. If it's not sensational enough no one pays attention. It's a very unfortunate fact of life for many
Great perspective. I could watch you break down Tool songs all day. Well done.
It was hard for me to concentrate on the lyrics of this song and the musical instrumentations and instead my eyes were just mesmerized by the visual conceptions of the music video. Absolutely amazing and gorgeous video and major kudos to whoever created this visual work of art.
This is, in my opinion, on the shortlist for greatest song ever made, and possibly even the best piece of art ever made.
I dont really care to watch things die, but i do enjoy watching a pretty lady discovering TooL, Vicariously. mind blown.
I was 4:20 in and was like nooooo that doesn't seem right. Enjoying other people's suffering? No, people become characters in a drama we enjoy - we don't enjoy that they're suffering
Great analysis! And love you love rock! ⚘️🔥🖤
Wow your insight into their lyrics is amazing , thank you. The best out there ! Please give us your interpretation to Tool ‘Descending’.
