On the album, it’s two songs. The slow lead in is Parabol, and that big drop is the transition into Parabola. I still get goosebumps more than 20 years after I first heard it.

When I lived in Denver, I used this album to time my drive to work. I would always make it to my parking space in the middle of Lateralus. But my favorite part of that drive was the part of this song when Maynard screams "ALIIIIIVE, I." This was when I'd come over a hill and the Continental Divide would seem to rise up from the horizon. It always made my morning.
Same! Seeing it live is to breathe life into your soul that you didn't know you needed.

Me too, but about 27 years ago. I discovered Tool at just the right time in my life. I never get tired of listening to Tool, any song, anytime.. on a loop, doesn't matter. Saw them in concert 4 times, will go again. You don't really listen to Tool, you experience Tool.

You can do their entire discography and find therapy in every single track, it's quite amazing how connected they make you.
I really like to start at the beginning, and work my way through their albums to just experience the growth. Both with the instruments and Maynards lyrics.

My favorite Tool song. There is so much in these lyrics. It gives me goose bumps every time and I've heard it countless times. Maynard's ability to put into lyrics the poetry of life and the human condition is beautiful. As above so below, as within so without. We are the All, and the All is all.
This song came to me followed by Lateralus at the sabe time that I was feeling depressed 😥 and the message that it transmits put me straight to the path of life 🥲 and everytime that feeling come back I sink again in these songs to help me get out. Nice reaction, you are doing great 😁
Tool have so many brilliant, unique songs but this one is definitely one of my favourites. The song is so cleverly written and constructed and the video just puts it up there even higher.

This song, its lyrics and its music video are all about the initiate system of the Golden Dawn Hermetic Order. Secret Fire; If you know the relationship between kundalini, kabbalah and alchemy, you can understand it a little. If you infer from this song that only the third eye is opened, you would be unfair.
@@WhoAmi-sk1kz my theory, a person reaches enlightenment, opens their third eye and realises that they are nothing but energy and fades into the background of the universe, which is also energy. We are all connected in some way, death is just a part of your life, you'll return to where you came from, back to energy. I find it very soothing.
@@WhoAmi-sk1kz Or...the ending animation of the video depicts the idea of chakras from Hinduism and Buddahism. The eyes are enlightenment entering at their feet. The eyes paused around his crotch which is where your first (or base) chakra is. The eyes continue to intertwine where the other chakras reside, ending at the final chakra which is ultimate enlightenment. Here is where they realize that we are energy and we are all connected. Finally, the body disappears only leaving an energy form, connected to other energy forms. Wrote that totally sober and remembered my world religions class from the 90's.

The way her eyes open, and jaw drops - THIS is why I watch Tool reaction videos, and it never fails to give me goosebumps to watch someone else have their mind opened by this amazing band. Fun fact I read is that when Maynard screams "Alive" following a pause, that marks the exact middle of the song. The apex of the parabola. Thus, the build-up to that moment and then the wind down on to the end. Again, I read this somewhere researching this track. If I am wrong, please enlighten me so I don't spread misinformation.

my friend brought this album with us when we went to Thailand for a holiday. we flew on Sept. 11th 2001 and when we landed the world had changed. my first time hearing this was in the aftermath of that horrendous tragedy tripping balls on a beach on Ko Samui... still blows my mind 😎🤘

For me, this is one of the most powerful songs that I've ever heard. I live with chronic pain due to many injuries, and pain is something that I live with every day. This life that I live though, is a blessing. I am made of the material of a million dead stars, at some point in the future, parts of me will return to a star, and will find a new holy experience. I am eternal, or at least, parts of me are. In the meantime, my pain is an illusion. It's just a series of action potentials from one nerve to another, it, like the body that I live in, does not define me.

It's not just about pain tho, it's a reminder that this existence is just a small blip of time and that we chose to have this experience... this WHOLE experience, the good, the bad, the pain, the pleasure the entire human experience.
This entire album helped me view my bipolar diagnosis from a different angle, and take responsibility for my own mental health. I’m not at all exaggerating when I say this album gave me my life back. Decades later, I still come back to this to center myself and calm my inner storms.
Every time I click on a Parabola review I have major anxiety over whether it's Parabol/Parabola or just Parabola and immediately pause it and head to the comments to see.

This has been one of my biggest go-to songs. Whenever I need release something that has been weighing on me or falling up in my chest to the point that it feels like I'm drowning. I will put this song on in my truck at full volume and just let it rip. After you scream this at the top of your lungs, you are guaranteed to feel at least 50% better than you did when the song came on.

@heartsupport this song has and all always been a beacon of light for me in troubled times, as I have always felt so lost and alone in this world struggling with PDA and depression to connect with others especially as I feel like I can never truly connect with anyone

The songs leading up to this track, The Grudge, Schism, et. al., are chaotic with varied time sigs. Parabol/a is essentially 4/4 and you can hear the band way more focused and united. And driving forward with purpose. They’re learning to live and appreciate the pain of being together… fully realized by Lateralus. 🌀

It's so awesome hearing a therapist's perspective on, well, ANY of Tool's songs. Absolutely loving these! Parabol + Parabola is one of my favorites from them.
I'd be super interested to hear your take on three songs in particular, which I'm sure have been mentioned. They're "Judith", by A Perfect Circle, which is one of Maynard's (the vocalist of Tool) other bands, and then Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days, which are both back-to-back tracks on Tool's 10,000 Days album. The three songs deal with Maynard's mother, her health issues, her faith, and Maynard coming to terms with the different stages of her illness, struggles, and ultimately her death. Hearing the perspective of someone in the mental health field would be absolutely fascinating!
