Therapist Reacts to Lateralus by Tool

- Therapist analyzes the lyrics of Lateralus by Tool to discuss how "spiraling out" can actually be a good thing. When we spiral out of our comfort zone we can explore, and expand! Tool allows us to reframe the spiral.

Right on. I thought she would catch the alchemical colors because Jung delve into it, but I know it's a lot to take in at first glance.
@@Qliphirot You have an amazing user name. :D That aside, you're right. It can be a lot to take in, especially while on camera reacting to it for the first time. She did catch the meaning, whether or not she caught the references.
Also the syllables align with the Fibonacci sequence which forms a spiral.
@@GhostCrowBrotherit’s actually the syllables too that line up with the sequence as well and then there’s the timing of the different parts of the song, they’re kinda all going back to spirals.
This is the best song ever written, recorded, performed
I can’t pick one best Tool song though

Some of the genius of this song is the writing and singing to the Fibinocci sequence
And that Fibonacci sequence is another spiral… anyway there is a lot of info on this song on the Internet
ruclips.net/video/nI63B3cY7q0/видео.html
@@edostork8121 it's actually a perfect spiral. Pyramids as well as cathedrals were built utilizing fibonaci sequence. Also a human face is more pleasing to the eye the closer its ratio is to the fibonaci sequence. Amazing how many instances of the fibonaci sequence occur in nature
@@donnypeters-y9c indeed thanks for refining that statement
I absolutely love your breakdowns of Tool's lyrics. I understand you are a therapist, but you are breaking it down like someone who has listened to Tool for 30 years. I'm here for it!
awwww thank you so much!
The crazy thing about the spiral is how often it appears in nature and the universe. From a shell to the galaxy, everything is connected and always spiraling out. Its like the flower of life. It's present in so much of our lives.
I thought the flower of life was a pussy
yea. mostly following the spiral in wich the fibonachy sequence can be depicted. it's for practical reasons. with plants and shells. it's about leaves not overlapping too much and about an effective way of building a structure. in galaxiees, I suppose, it's physics. like fractals, it's one of those things that make you feel like you can see the basic priciples of our universe. I love shit like this. I can't bring myself to believe in any creation deity, but basic patterns that can be found throughout the whole universe, that seem to be the core of what is.... hell yea. that shit makes me feel connected to space time itself.
The golden ratio 😊
Thats why i deny Atheism and any non-belief in God.
In my opinion, all these divine ratios and geometries that appear everywhere in nature are 100% proof of God, the Creator of everything.
They ARE His fingerprints. His blueprints to life.
We all have our own individual fingerprints and identities, but yet, we all have those exact ratios in our human form too. We were created in HIS image.
We are literally Gods creation. Not some random bullshit of soup that came together from nothingness.
never have I clicked on a video so fast before. Spiral out!
After the censored version of Ænema I was a bit wary.
Spiral out !
Keep going!
This song makes me feel like we can achieve anything as long as we KEEP GOING!
Listening to Tool's albums in the order they were released is an amazing journey both mentally, and spiritually!
I cried watching this reaction? Not the advice or permission but more just your discovery during the music. It’s a good one.
awww thank you!
I love this song.
I remember 20 years ago my girlfriend lying down and listening to this for the first time murmuring to me “now I understand why you love this music”.
I am a bit obsessed with tool and my wife never got it until we went to a tool concert about 30 minutes into the show she said now I get it. She's been a fan ever since. I think she had a better time than I did.
I wasted $300 to take wife to Columbus show...she did homework on phone. Now she's an ex-wife@@youtubebannedme4207
Tool 'H' is a must, up your avenue me thinks
That and Jimmy would be amazing to check out! Those are some of MJK's personal songs.
What a coincidence I am going to get to hear my baby's heartbeat for the first time today at my wife's OBGYN appointment.
Congratulations! Hope you all the best! 😁✌️❤️
Amazing. Grats :)🎉
Congratulations!
Congrats brother 🙌
I thought I heard my baby’s heartbeat the other day. Turns out my wife is just fat and she had gas
And now Tool Army, the moment we've all been waiting for!
I highly suggest "Right in Two" for personal listening
I second this request 🔥🤘🏽🔥
Yes!
With Intension as opener of course!
I'd like to see an reaction
YES YES YES!!!
Yes, I am 12 videos into this playlist that I discovered two and half hours ago. Yes, I am thoroughly enjoying your reactions to this music that has spoken to my soul for so many years. This one in particular, the is the song of my heart. I'd encourage a couple nights with just you, the desert sky and some mushrooms. Then come back to break this one down again. There is SOOO much here.
Like wine and cheese.
Screw fell out of chair rocking to Tool...sounds about right.
Some of my screws fell out while listening to Tool for the first time as well, so I understand your feelings. 😅😉😂
It sounds wrong in all the right ways. Their time signatures are nuts.
Screws fall out all the time the world’s an imperfect place. JB
The vibe and groove of this song along with your reaction @ the 7:08 mark caught my attention. Over 20 years I’d never realized how the lyrics and music came together until just now. It’s gave me teary eyed and some chills once I realized it. Thank you
I love how silly you can be but in the next second, serious and insightful. I truly wish you were my therapist. My psych appointments literally last 10 minutes and this is how every visit goes: “how you doing”, “ok I guess besides a lot of anxiety and trouble sleeping” “ok well I’ll increase youre klonpin and that should give you relief” “ok” “alright, good to see you have a good one and I’ll see you in 3 months”
thank you friend. I'm sorry that's your experience at your psych appointment. Unfortunately that's the experience many people have. My encouragement would be to try to find a therapist AND a psychiatrist. Many people don't know this but psychiatrists primarily prescribe medicine, whereas therapists can actually help you process. We also have a peer mentorship program if you're interested :) Sending love!
@@HeartSupport thank you for that advice. See, I always imagined psychiatrists where you go in, lay on a couch, pour out you’re soul and they help you work through you’re issues. When I came back from Afganistan, I was NUTS but I’m doing a lot better now as far as the fear, depression, and paranoia but I’m doing much better now. Just not quite where I wanna be. I’m a single dad with custody of my daughters and they bring me a lot of joy so I’m doing a lot better but I will definitely seek out a good therapist. Thank you
My favorite song of all time since I was a kid for many reasons.
“Swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human”. Im Native American I’m fortunate to still be able to participate and watch our ceremonies/dances. This part always takes me back home. Reminds me that no matter what is going on in the world, whatever or whoever we pray to. Everything will be ok.
this is so beautiful. thanks for sharing
Almost like its a golden ratio of music and meaningful lyrics 😉
It's my favorite Tool song. Nit because of the message. I treat the singing as part of the music. I love the way it all fits together.
But the message of slowly spiral out to explore life....great message
Thanks for analyzing this song.
One of my favorite songs to teach to high school students during our modern poetry unit. Helping students realize that every step into bewilderment is pushing the envelope of their existence was thrilling.
That was cool. Never thought I'd see Stevie Nicks react to the greatest song ever made.
Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned with lyrics. Great reaction. Spiral out!!

I shed a tear every time I hear this song. Spiral out

Doesn’t matter what I’m doing I have to stop and take it in. Whenever my time comes I hope I get a chance to speak my final words. It will be something along the lines of spiraling out.
Amen brother/sister. Spiral out
Yep. Every single time.
Part of what makes Tool so special and unique is their ability to use odd time signatures. Not having things sound just like everything else on out there makes you really listen and pay attention. Of course it helps that they are 4 of that best musicians on the planet and write beautiful music.
When I REALLY sat up and paid attention to this song for the first time, I had the same reaction to "Spiral Out, Keep Going!" that you did. I was giddy!!! It changed my life!!! Embrace the random! Spiral out and keep going!!!
Let yourself ride the wave of life instead of trying to swim through every wave without any mental support for yourself. This song is like a march for me for life as it is. It impassioned me to reach out for the random
I always love seeing folks trying to figure out Tool's rhythms.
Incredible how your mind defaults you to a positive perspective. Always appreciated to hear a new outlook on things
Taylor - Please pause to share your thoughts! Talking loudly over guitar solos isn't the vibe : )
Having had stage 3 cancer twice. I found fighting to stay alive has humbled me and given me anxiety. The big question is what if it comes back what if ? This what if that. This feeling all but consumed me. But after 6 months of taking the magic fungus.
I have found a way to compartmentalize the anxiety and live the life i was given a second chance at . Man what a great feeling it is to be alive.
Please do the song Deadman by the band Karnivool. This one will take you to a place I do t think you can analyze and would love to see you break it down
when this album came out, their live shows were so fire (they always were and still is) but I mean, the stage looked insanely cool
with MJK in a rotating stage, all painted with spirals. CHILLS!
I’m hooked on your tool reactions. I’ve watch two hrs of it, need to go to sleep n I can’t stop watching your take on tool’s lyrics! Fk, gotta go to bed! 😂😂😂
Im here for any Tool songs you do 🤘🌀
Love seeing a therapist dismanteling her apartment with good background music.
A controlled spiral can be an amazing feeling. Stunt driving and race drivers do it all the time. There's something exhilarating about knowing your car's tires are losing they're grip on the road but if you let it happen you can drift and still be in control and accomplish things most people are afraid to try.
this is one of a few songs that gives me chills every time i hear it. a masterpiece.
Glad I stumbled on this channel. Great takes about each song. Thank you for all you do.
He's not talking about "spiraling out" to lose control. He's just talking about the Fibonacci sequence and to push your boundaries "it may just go where no ones been"
If you never change anything you live in a circle. If you try new things and push the limits your life will spiral outwards.
You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, you must build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete. Spiral TF out!
Lateralus is one of the best songs I've ever heard. I think you're ready to delve into the songs about Maynard's relationship with his mother Judith, her faith in the face of tragic disability, and his evolving feelings about her. It's a worthwhile journey.
Tool - Jimmy
A Perfect Circle - Judith
Tool - Wings for Marie (Pt 1) and 10,000 Days (Wings Pt 2) [To be done in one reaction.]
I still love that this song is about not getting lost in needing to understand everything while also being designed to be over analyzed.
This comment makes no sense whatsoever.
This band has been the most influential band and music to me since my young age. Their songs are very long and complex, and the name "Tool" is so well chosen. It's a tool for you through the music they have written for so many years. :)
I always saw it as a song of spirituality and enlightenment. The lyrics exactly describe how I now feel and see things. A great song.
Love how you translate all of the TOOL videos, you’re great 🫶🖤
Gotta love that Fibonacci! Love your Tool reactions. I've seen dozens of reactions to this song and yours is unique given your experience and insight. You definitely have an intensity and motivation that are unrivaled. Keep spiraling out...
btw, SPIRAL OUT and explore MJK other bands too.
A Perfect Circle - Orestes - Stone And Echo ( Live at Red Rocks 2013 ) - pls do the live version
Puscifer - The Humbling River
This song actually helped pull me from the depths of a 2 or 3 year long depression about 20 years ago. The entire album helped, but this and Parobol/Parobola were the most therapeutic.
Anyhoo... I hope your channel grows. You're the kind of person I could get lost in conversation with and I love that. A chaotic yet functional and analytical mind is ... well it's kind of hell but it's fun. Good luck with your channel ❤
The song always takes me to a good head space if I'm having a bad day.
Yes
I highly recommend Tool's songs "Invincible" or "Right in Two"
Most inspiring song in their catalog
The biggest frown in the world followed by a bigger smile is what music does! Lol I ❤ it!
Raching out to embrace the random, reaching out to embrace whatever may come. Thanks dear friends for the journey
this is my favorite song of all time. i listen to it every night
"as below so above and beyond I imagine". I just love that line. for me it takese the "as a above so below" (wich I don't like.) and truns it upside down, inside out. suddenly I can interpret fractals into this and that the same rules apply all over our universe and possible in other universes as well. suddenly that lilne opens a whole world to me.
Best Tool reaction ever.
Love your analysis, as always. This is one of, if not my favorite of theirs. It inspired my tattoo on my forearm (the written version of the phi symbol)
Yes to everything you said. But also, as other comments have mentioned, the Fibonacci Sequence. Look up (on RUclips) "Tool Lateralus Fibonacci". It gives a great break down of how well thought-out this song is.
I hit like on this video before it even started. This song and album are a rabbit hole journey. One I highly suggest, especially when the tracks are put into the “correct” order, referred to as “The holy gift”. Enjoy
This song embodies harmony between entropy and structure. Like life, it is complicated, yet so simple. It invokes thinking but also feeling. It meanders effortlessly between the known and the unknown world, weaving a glorious tapestry of lyrics, sound, and emotions- there is simply no other song that connects so engagingly on all these dimensions.
I’d love for you to do the entire album from start to finish because I believe they put it together as a journey to enlightenment.
Love your reactions on these videos. Thank you for making this content
When you let go of control, you are able to discover.
Discovery is not always good, but experience is the purpose of life, not only good experiences.
I just love how a song that is SO over thought has people interpret its meaning as not to not over think shit. I think it's just the opposite, you have to put everything into something and the most important thing is to know what matters and put it there. She gets it. Spiral out my dear, you're fantastic at it.
Spiral out. Keep going! Great POV

Ahhhh the irony of a song about overthinking/overanalyzing that’s rooted in the Fibonacci sequence. Tool is the 🐐
This blows your mind when seen live.
Tool is just on another level altogether regardless of the genre of music. It’s more akin to high art like the Mona Lisa in musical formatting. He’s an amazing lyricist and the instrumentals are just insane. Danny Carey and his use of sacred geometry in drumming is just different. I love watching people enjoy Tool for the first time. I’m also envious lol
