Therapist makes a wish by Jambi -Tool

  • Therapist analyzes the lyrics of Jambi by Tool to discuss the difficulty of wishing. We are in a place of HOPE and powerlessness and this tension often causes us to run, but that is not what the sufferer needs. The person our wish is directed towards needs us to see them instead of just their pain. This song calls us to be with the pain and shine our light on it.

'Wings for Marie, Pt. 1” and “Wings for Marie, Pt. 2” (also known as “10,000 Days”) by Tool are deeply personal songs written by lead singer Maynard James Keenan as a tribute to his mother, Judith Marie. The songs reflect on her life, her unwavering faith, and her strength in the face of a debilitating stroke that left her paralyzed for 27 years, which is roughly 10,000 days. These tracks explore themes of grief, spirituality, and the afterlife as Keenan grapples with his mother’s suffering and her eventual passing. The emotional depth and complexity of the lyrics invite listeners to contemplate their own experiences with loss and the search for meaning beyond it

TOOL'S evolution from angry/defiant youth, leaps forward each album toward a deeper understanding of the human spirit. Jambi represents Maynard's reluctant transformation in his acceptance of spiritual power and its role in his life. The song demonstrates his developing awareness that a life filled with riches and debauchery is absolutely pointless without the sunlight of the spirit. Not religion, but the spirit of life inside all of us! Its the fulcrum, the center, the sun and light that he comes to understand as the key to happiness, that he would wish all his riches and fame away to keep from being divided from.

I love your take on it! For me, I honestly think it's a love song to someone who he nearly lost (or did lose) through the temptations of the world he lived in...there's a vision of someone feasting and living large, tempted by devils and this partner he sings to resuced him from this, became his balance, a sense of wholeness, in life. That last part seems to be him addressing the demons in his head that seek to disrupt this relationship he has with this person through gluttony and the typical temptations that come with being a bonafide rockstar!

Some people say it’s about his mother, some people say it’s his son, and I can agree with both interpretations. I also hear it connect to “Jimmy” and how it could be about his work healing his inner child. In “Jimmy” he references Eleven, aka his inner child, protecting his light and waiting for him (adult Maynard) to come home. Then, after doing the self work, adult Maynard is awake to his regressed suffering and comes to “save” Eleven. In Jambi, I think he touches on how fame can sometimes make him lose sight of the self work and healing he’s done, but Eleven is always there and Maynard has to reaffirm that the fame is nothing without the growth and strength that comes from Eleven, so he tells him (Eleven, who is always guarding his light) to “shine down upon the broken until two become one”, another throwback to “Jimmy” when he says that “one and one become one”, as Maynard and Eleven must heal together to become whole. Eleven is the benevolent sun and Maynard is the broken one. Maynard is asking his inner child to keep shining his light, to not give up on him and in turn Maynard will silence his internal demons, and as one they will survive.

The guitar sounding like a person, is literally the guitar sounding like a person talking. It's a talkbox, a sort of strange contraption that hooks up to your amp, that has a long straw that you put in your mouth and then your mouth modifies the sound. You can get the same effect with any amp, even your phone, if you play music and then put your mouth next to where the sound comes out, it will sound the same as this. That is what a tallkbox does, but instead of you standing looking like you're goiing to eat your amp, the straw directs the sound into your mouth and then gets picked up again and send through the amp, basically.

The guitar solo is done through a talk box - essentially Adam (the guitarist) is "speaking" into a tube that mixes into the guitar sound - so whatever he plays on his guitar, it is affected by how he controls the tube with his mouth. This effect is super famous on Livin' on a Prayer by Bon Jovi.

Your thoughts on "thoughts and prayers" are so true. Half of my hometown burned down due to forest fires a couple days ago. I see so many posts on social media "thoughts and prayers - but what about my vacation??!!" And it is insanely angering.

I really enjoy your breakdown and reaction. I think there is also inspiration from him and the love of his son. Like you said this song applies to those you love but can't always project/heal. in the case of a child you can only do so much because they have to be their own person.

TOOL has been with me since the early 90’s constantly in my car and my man cave, have all their cd’s ( even salival ) my daughter and I have seen them four times live, incredible musicians, Maynard’s lyrics are so deep and personal. I’ve got all the Perfect Circle as well as Pusifer. Spiral out…

I just lost my wife. We were together for 13 years. I lost my mother last December. And I lost my job this April. Listening to music brings me joy and sadness but it helps me. Thank you for doing these videos. Tool has been a beg part of my musical journey through my life. I even got my wife into it. Lol.

That fraction of a clip of The Fifth Element cracked me up because the musician/occasional actor Tricky who was in the Parabola music video was in the movie about a minute later from that scene, he’s got some pretty cool music too and was a pretty important figure in the 90’s Trip-Hop scene

I think the song is about having a child. When i met my daughter (i think in the songs case, his son), this song is about how it changes you, and because of them and their light, it leads the way to being a better human. It's about the experience of your life becoming about someone else, rather than yourself. I'd wish it all away if it lost you just one day. As a dad, i have found that i feel like id happily stop existing if i thought me existing would lose my daughter even one day of her life.

For the guitar sound on the solo, Adam is using a pedal or effect called a Talk Box. To keep it simple for non-guitar nerds, it’s a device plugged into your amp from your guitar and has a plastic tube attached to a mic, using your mouth to manipulate the overall tone. Peter Frampton and Joe Perry (among others I’m sure) made these popular.

Love your reactions: if you really want a mindblow, try doing an entire album! If you piece together each of the songs as a full kind of 'story' or 'essay' you find a whole new level of wtf! Start with all of Lateralus but definitely do Fear Inoculum!
