  • Therapist analyzes the lyrics to Judith by a Perfect Circle to discuss the journey that Maynard has gone through in his grieving process. This song is a gift for anyone who is in the anger stage of their grief and has more questions than they have answers. Tool has been creating music long enough for us to see that this feeling is a point in the journey.

    No one seems to mention the awesomeness of Maynard holding that last note on “did it all for yooooouuuuuu…” right through Billy & Paz layering over it. He holds that (including the downshift) for 17 seconds. It isn’t “The Grudge” level, but it’s a reminder that Maynard could just bring it.

    I think it's less that Maynard was pissed at god specifically but more the idea that his Mother was still such a believer even while she was in so much pain from her Illness. If I remember correctly, in some interview he did he spoke how she would say things like "I just need to pray more" and it ate him up.

      Yeah I am pretty sure he doesn't actually believe per say. Wings for Marie was his way of showing his appreciation for her being, not faithful, but being a good person til the end regardless of what happened to her. I also think that it's his way of praising her and speaking about her the way she would've wanted in a way. She was a better person than phony religious people who only pretend to be good because they are thinking they are going to hell, if not and others who pretend to be religious just to tear other people down basically.

      This. And he is upset with her for seeming to stay loyal to a congregation that treats her sickness like a punishment for some lack of faith she must have had. When he says "he did this to you" it isn't out of an actual belief that some cosmic being made her sick. He is telling her what her own church members were saying. James Hetfield from Metallica experienced a similar kind of conflict with a mother who belonged to one of those goofy sects that reject modern medicine and push "faith" healing instead. It prompted the song "The God That Failed" which I have always found very thematically similar to Judith.

    Just wanted to add one thing you didn’t know about the song, Maynard felt so powerfully about this song that it has the one and only expletive on the entire album giving it a parental advisory warning

    • @TheBonusHoles
      @TheBonusHoles 4 месяца назад +4

      Yeah, the parental advisory logo has nothing to do with Maynard. It's just an arbitrary thing record labels voluntarily put on albums at the time. There are albums that have more swearing on them than Mer De Noms that don't have a PA logo. Hell, Nevermind by Nirvana has the same amount of swearing, even the same word, and it doesn't have a PA logo. Generally, one swear word didn't result in a PA logo. It was likely the label (APC signed to a different label than Tool) being squeamish about the subject matter of the song itself rather than him saying any one word. Like back then, corporations were weird about offending Christians. Like if a song said "god damn", the radio would take out "god" but not "damn".

    Its my understanding that Maynard was angry that his mother had suffered a stroke which left her in a wheelchair, and couldn't understand how she remained steady in her faith in God.
    Maynard is a wine grower, and scattered his mom's ashes in his vineyard. He named that crop of wine "Judith" after his mom. my mother suffered and died from a 10+ year battle with breast cancer, early on she had her faith shook and I turned away from the church as prayer never changed her suffering. When this song came out I instantly related to the reckoning he came to face between life and death and how we want what is best for the ones we love but can sometimes have zero control over, and the subsequent anger that was evoked by my own suffering in grief.

    My mother in law passed 5 days ago after nearly a 2 year battle with cancer, she was VERY Catholic, and kept her faith.
    This song came to mind, as i saw what she was going through

    Maynard is just plain incredible on so many levels, singer of three bands, winemaker who actually goes and does all the working of planting and earthwork of the grapes/vines etc., oversight of it all and warming at it, his creativity in sooo many ways! Simply phenomenal!

    It's been 14 years since I became a paraplegic, from a very capable and independent guy, to now. I still feel this deep in my bones. (the ones I still feel) I still go from one to another to the next and back. It's really hard, especially when you are on your own most of the time. I have music, and it's kept me going.

      Josh is one of my favorite drummers. (I am a drummer) I saw APC along with Primus and Puscifer a few months ago, and I was so excited that Josh was touring with them. But the night I saw the show, he had already rejoined the Foo Fighters for their tour! I was so sad........at first. Puscifers drummer - Gunnar Olsen - filled in and knocked it out of the park. He got a new fan that night!!

    I love how we all got to watch Maynard evolve through the same trauma as we lived ourselves and it helped us move through this life in a healthy way and not lose our sht because he provided us with an outlet that wasn't negative and detrimental to our mental health and now we're a productive member of society doing good things in life that are positive...amirite?

    His anger and frustration is perfectly versed and the music yells on his behalf as he makes his case to his mother. It’s tragic, caring and angry all at once. Still one of their best songs, for a group with a LOT of amazing songs.
