- Welcome!
Experience the rush with me as I react to Tool's 'The Grudge'. This song is a masterclass in dynamics, taking us on a rollercoaster ride of heavy and soft, with Maynard's iconic vocals guiding the way. Let's dive in and explore/ break down the highs and lows of this epic track together! (𝑅𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑡𝑜 𝑐𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑘 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑏𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑛!)

I apologize for having to put this up without a premiere, this week has been HECTIC! Ido wish you enjoyed the ride with TOOL again, do let me know your thoughts in the comments so we can connect! 😊🙏🏼🎶
Great reaction to a great song and band, I just wish you had a wikifeet page
You're doing Awesome!! Forget about IT!! 💟☮️
You are doing awesome! What about a newly released song? "Paper Wolf - VOLA"
You never need to apologize. 😉
This is my first reaction to your videos. Please forgive my ignorance, but I must know the language you are speaking. May I also say that you are quite beautiful, and you have a great smile. And although your accent is heavy, your use of English words to describe your reaction is very eloquent, and I'm impressed.
By the way, this is my favorite Tool song, as its music and lyrics evoke a vision of mankind's begrudging grip on the many different interpretations of religion and God concepts. I question, will mankind ever be able to "let go" of the destructive dogmas which keep us at perpetual odds with each other?
I'm a former Christian, and I dream of a world in which we agree to disagree and converse and commerce in relative peace; a world in which we all have an educated understanding of how to keep our Id, Ego and Superego in check, for the sake of peaceful coexistence, of course.
Every time I listen to this song, I create a new video in my mind of the process of humanity 'letting go' of the psychological grips from the Gods that have been imposed upon us by our ancient ancestors. I dream of world peace. Is that so wrong? I doubt we will see it in our lifetime. Mankind needs to further evolve. Mankind needs to "46 & 2," another excellent Tool song. Have you reacted to "Lateralus" yet?
i love the sound of finnish, such a beautiful language. the grudge is my favourite tool song
I was wondering why it sounded so familiar. I listen to a lot of Estonian Psy-Trance (Meisterjaan specifically) and they are both Uralic languages and there is a similar flow/sound to them. I love it. To me, Finnish sounds like a Swede speaking Estonian, but I have no working knowledge of either language so it’s not based in any fact and purely anecdotal, although I do believe most Finns have to learn Swedish is school. Great reaction as well! About to binge more of them from her!
After enduring innumerable RUclipsr reactions to Tool and navigating the dense undergrowth of poor critiques and lackluster appreciation, we at last receive a true gift from the maestro!
Awww I am happy to serve! 🎶😊🙏🏼
Skullz and Knox Hill do pretty good analysis, if you're looking for some good ones. Skullz has done almost all of TOOL's discography, but Knox has only done a few songs.
@@TheDieselDRNKR seen all of Skullz. He’s legit. I’ll check out Knox for sure. If you don’t know Geebz you’re missing out
Try David Heretic too, he has done several Tool songs.
Maynard is 60. I heard them do this song in concert last year and he nailed the scream.
:o
I saw them in concert last year in LA, too - yes, Maynard nailed it! I saw them this year, too!
He nails the tone but doesn’t go as long for obvious reasons, it’s a monumental task.
Maynard’s goal was 29.5 seconds on the scream because Saturn returns every 29.5 years but he almost passed out in the studio . So 25 seconds is all he could get. Great reaction. And Danny Carrey is a beast on drums.
Sounds legit...
@@billpimentel-vm6cu lmao
It's not really 25 seconds though. The scream fades in and out, so the actual time of the scream is 21-22 seconds (which is still super impressive anyway!).
@@robmartin9782 agreed
That's the kind of silly symbolism that's the worst part of Tool :)
This song is so meaningful when you understand the message! ❤ The "frustrated" sections symbolize a grudge weighing down your life ... the "serene" sections symbolize choosing to let go of that heavy weight ... the "scream" at the end symbolizes the difficult work of actually releasing the painful emotions that may have lived in your body for years and years. It's an absolutely beautiful musical composition to mirror the song's meaning ❤
Yes, a beast. Everyone makes a big deal over Maynard's scream (rightly so), but Danny's drumming at the end is the TRUE highlight of this song.
I vividly remember saving enough to buy this album at 15 back when it came out. That anticipation of knowing that would be the only CD I could afford that month, so it had better be great, added a dimension we sorely miss these days. I remember smiling and laughing exactly like you did. I remember the room, who I was with and precisely how I felt. I was listening to an album that would be with me for the rest of my life, and it has proved to be the case.
And the packaging was amazing. You can't buy things like that anymore.
Maynard used to perform the scream live pretty much every night on the 2001-2002 tour. I saw them in 2001 and he pulled that scream off flawlessly.
Same. Saw them October 2001. They opened with The Grudge and he nailed the scream.
He didn’t hold it the full length, but he still held it impressively long when I saw them this year.
@@crazydrummer181 Yeah its more of a yell now and not a full scream. Its impressive how he has preserved his voice at his age considering almost destroying it in the early 2000's.
@@tomloeper8933 Magical time to see them live back then.
They played The Grudge nearly each show on the recent tour. He does the scream for about 10ish seconds now. The way they do it though, it all still sounds excellent.
3:00 thats bass
3:10 thats synth
12:49 hes an alien
Everyday is a school day! I am not afraid to say that I was wrong. :)
In the lyrics Maynard refers to the astrological relevance of Saturn (also called "the planet of Karma"). It takes Saturn 28-30 years to complete its orbit of the zodiac and all the negative things, behavioural patterns and grudges etc that you haven't cleared up/changed during that time will hit you even harder when "Saturn comes back around". Saturn is like a very strict teacher that confronts you with your dark side/your shadow but also rewards you when you did the inner work conscientiously. He is also associated with the underworld and time.
Awesome reaction btw! You're easily one of the most interesting and most intelligent "reactors" on YT. Much love and greetings from Germany :)
There is no better band in the history of the world! Four guys that are the absolute best at what they do! No equivalent, nothing even close!🌿🌸
You. Hit that right!!!Tool rules! Guess how old I am ??? Lol
Maynard is certified not human
:D
Your attention is wonerful. It was a 25 second controlled cry. Every time I watch you with a song that I've known for years.I learned something new about it and find more appreciation for the artists. Well done.
Im a 55 year old alaskan man and your dissections and analysis of, not only tool but a lot of metal and rock bands song are absolutely dead on. I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL.😊
I just found this channel. I listened to this video and the two previous TOOL videos. Easy sub. I love the analysis. Anna clearly knows what she is talking about and seems quite skilled herself. I need to get to sleep, but I want to watch all the vids!
Thank you so much for your kind words! Welcome to the music fam and hope you had a good sleep! :)
The Grudge is an unbelievable masterpiece. Sorry i don't have anything more articulate to say at the moment. Many of Tool's songs leave me speechless.
Check out Rick Beato's interview with Maynard. He described self care during touring.
I saw them live in January….and they played this one (he can still pull it off like nothing… is jaw dropping ). TOOL ARE BY FAR THE GOATS
Many of their live set list, put this song right before the 15 minutes intermission.
Round 4: May I suggest Tool's best trip yet, the Holy Trinity: "Disposition / Reflection / Triad." You gotta listen to this straight through. It's definitely a journey. Loved your reaction to "Grudge." 🤩
That was my favourite song of all time for a decade! Still in the top ten for me 👌 tx from Québec Canada 🇲🇶🇨🇦 🖐️
Great music that was new when you were a little girl. The drummer is now 63. They have not only never had a bad album , they have never had a bad song.
It's so funny to see your puzzling expression as you're trying to figure some of the rhythms and patterns out. A true must have for any Tool listener! Awesome review.
The scream at towards the end is the stuff of legends. Between stories that Maynard threw up after or passed out after, only the band and the producer know...BUT...what I find amazing in the scream is the last few seconds you can hear him wringing the last bits of air from his lungs. There is an additional strain and raspyness to it as he completely forces out every bit of air.
I really enjoy hearing you reacting in your native language and English. You are very pleasant to listen to. I always look forward to your new videos.
Thanks for letting me hear your Finnish. Tool brings us all together. /snicker
Just a wonderful reaction as always, Anna! Maynard’s 25 second scream isn’t just a show-off moment, it’s a crucially important release of all the frustration that the lyrics are describing throughout.
There aren’t too many live recordings of this - Maynard used to be able to get 20 seconds or more of it live, but since he got COVID I haven’t seen or heard of him holding more than about 12-15 seconds of it. I could be wrong, though, other Tool army members can correct me if needed.
The outro is about 30 seconds of the most glorious musical chaos one could ever want to hear.
Thanks so much, Anna, for covering this one. I do hope you get to SOAD “Spiders” next, it was my 2nd place vote in your poll.
Cheers!! 😊
Still one of the greatest live songs of all time, its hard for even Tool to follow it sometimes. I miss the Lateralus tours where they still played Lateralus live, that one is even more powerful live.
One of the greatest bands ever!🤘❤🤟
First time seeing your channel. I really enjoyed your reaction/analysis, and I'll definitely watch some more of your videos 😎🤙
Thanks Anna, great reaction! ❤
The Brazilian Gracie Jiu-Jitsu training keeps his lungs that powerful. I'd heard that he vomited after that scream, due to pushing himself to the limit, vocally. He was trying for 29 seconds, referencing Saturn's orbital period of 29.5 Earth years.
Maynard was a combat diver in the Army, maybe that's why he has such volume that he can scream for so long :)
Another great analysis, Anna! You never disappoint.
Happy to serve!
the drummer is a beast!
yes! 😂
Yes!!! 🌀🌀🌀
If you want to hear something live from Tool, try Pushit (Live) from the Salival compilation album.
Agreed, but studio version first imo so she can compare the difference.
Finnish is the most gorgeous language I've ever heard
Maynard is definitely an alien. He meant to message home but forgot his pen
Live environment that scream is about 15-20 seconds I’ve seen this performed a couple times live. They’re concerts are amazing
My favorite analyst is back ❤
Happy to be back!
Can't go wrong listening to this band. Song is dope. I remember this is the first song on the album too....its like daaaaamn, here we gooooo
Your natural language is wonderful to hear
Also tool helped to make the man I am
Serious, Pious, Ruminating, Triumphant War-Cries, sounds like good description of TOOL.
Not even to react to (obviously you can), but the song "Right in Two" is incredible!
Im in love with this woman
27 seconds is the scream that represent the days saturn does a turn, that are 10000 days that is the next albums name, that is the time that his mom was paralitic on a chair and die
Maynard is also a master winemaker here in northern Arizona USA
Tool is amazing love!
I have seen them live 4 times!
Best live shows I have ever been to!
You should try one of Maynard’s other projects, “A Perfect Circle”, specifically the song “Judith”. Before listening, look up the meaning of the song. It’s very powerful
I always hold my breath during Maynard's scream, without even thinking about it.
Diggailen näistä suomalaisista reaktioista. Thankkis!
Muchas gracias por haber hecho que mi entendimiento de esta experiencia que es la escucha de las obras de tool sean mucho más .
So in regards to writing the lyrics after the instrumental part of the song, Miyako of Lovebites (Guitarist/Pianist) who composes around 50% of the songs (she has a BA in Music Composition), wrote a sample demo song for RUclips in a 3 part video series (way too long for you to react to) where she used piano notes for how she wanted the lyrics to sound. Part 1 is here ruclips.net/video/zODuQZ0Ka6k/видео.html
So thoughtful.
Tool is a band without any weak links. Everybody understands perfectly what the music is doing. When a guitar is played this way it is so easy for it to turn muddy, but here, despite the distorrion, every beat is crisp and clear. And Danny? What is possible to say about Danny? It is like having multiple synchronised fireworks shows going on at once. I don't know of another drummer who can match him. People talk about Peart, but he was a jazz drummer and so not really easily compared. Any time you choose to analyse a Tool song, I will be here for you.
And finally - the scream? The scream. Just not possible.
I often equate Maynard's scream in the Grudge to the legend of Giotto drawing a perfect circle, freehand, for the Pope: An artist can create a masterpiece that is complex, beautiful and thoughtful -- but none of those particular things are, themselves, a sign of true talent. A good artist relies on all of their tools, a great artist knows how to rely on just a few of them, but a true master knows how to express their talent without *any* of those tools.
A perfect circle (or, in the case of Maynard, a 25 second sustained scream), on the surface, it's such a simple thing -- "it's just a circle." But then, to think of the *years of mastery* it required to actually be able to do such a "simple thing" - the practice, the failures, the insights into one's own rythms and the mechanics of one's own body; Maynard's scream here is no different: It is not merely impressive, it, in and of itself, is a pure expression of his true talent, and a summation of all his experience up until this point.
Let's not forget the amazing mix and master of this album perhaps only rivaled by Steely Dan.
I am a simple man. I see a Tool reaction, I watch and click Like :)
Recommendations for more Tool:
Forty-Six & 2
Pushit (the live version from Salival)
Lateralus
Pneuma
Parabol/Parabola
Right In Two
Jambi
When I was young in in the 90's I only remember Tool being weird music videos that lasted a long time, but now in my early 40's I enjoy them and can relate to them. Maynard has two other bands as well. I went to a Lollapalooza in 2003 and he was there with A Perfect Circle and he also had Puscifer.
great reaction. enjoyed very much thank you.
imo Tool's Wings For Marie parts 1 & 2 from the 10,000days album is one of the best pieces of art they've created. Maynard's voicings and lyrical depth is devastating, and how the band managed to write the music first is astounding.
I've only heard hockey players (and Sam Lake) speak Finnish. Didn't know it could sound that good🥵
Yes, it sets a precedence. Very controlled. Movement leads you in to the lyrics
14:50 Exactly.
Absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this!!!!!
Maynard caught covid back in the day so he picks the live songs to perform based off how he feels he could perform also Danny Carey has said this is one of if not the toughest song to play live particularly early in a tour schedule.
Love the continuation down the TOOL rabbit hole…Maynard’s voice play is so incredible,as is the musical makeup of every piece they produce. I would love to hear your reaction to a bit of a crossover between two of my favorite bands. Please enjoy “Passenger “ from The Deftones…it features Maynard,as he helped inspire and record it!! The vocal play between him and Chino is top notch. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it,and I’m curious what your take would be!! It also opens up the voyage into Deftones and their amazing catalog as well👍 Keep up the terrific work❤️
it's insane how much I had listen to tool 20 years ago and now a girl who can not be much older is listen to it, where has all the time gone and why there is nothing comparable to tool to this day.
Wow!!!! Phenomenal analysis Anna. Great track from a great band. ❤
Liked and Sub'd. I have seen hundreds and hundreds of Tool reactions over the years and this is one of my top 5 easily. Loved your breakdowns and enthusiasm ! Keep em coming ! Pushit is one of my favorites along with Parabol-Parabola. They would make great Tool reactions for you.
This is my favorite TOOL song. Loved your reaction.
Tool is so good, you can introduce 15 more songs and every one is perfect.
It would be nice to see a double reaction. Eva Cassidy Autumn leaves and blues in the night. She could do so much.
Or a male voice madrugada the song vocal.
Also an interesting artist Aldous Harding. Two songs by her. : Fixture Picture and No peace.
Another great reaction! So glad you finally made your way back to TOOL. I’ve missed this, so good to see you again. ❤
It's the album opener from this beautiful concept album.
Best they could've done in my opinion.
It's crazy.
I can't say I ever was a tool fan, but I enjoyed the reaction. 🤔👍 Have a great weekend.
Yes...I love watching your reactions to Tool- I will never tire of watching pure amazement from first-time viewers/listeners. This one goes into My Favorites. :) Continue down the rabbit hole since there is so much more amazing stuff to come. Though this might sound cheesy, Tool is more of an experience than a band. As always, I equally love both your English accent as well as you speaking in your native tongue; it's such a great combination of other languages (simply my opinion).. Hope that didn't come across as creepy-lol.
Another incredible reaction ❤
Love hearing you speak both languages too 😊
Part of the appeal of your channel is of course your intelligence and expertise, but just seeing you get in the groove and have fun with music like Tool's is awesome!
welp gosh, i speak english, and i don't know what you're saying, but i love it. so i'm going to subscribe and watch some more.
Thanks for the subtitles I enjoy hearing you speak your native tongue. 👏
Awsome quality reaction and reveiw/anlysis
In an interview, drummer Danny Carey said this is his most difficult to play. In particular earlier in tours when he feels not in full 'playing condition'.
Danny says this is the hardest song to play in his old age bc of the ending. Maynard did the scream for about 4-5 years post album release. Obviously not every show bc you just can’t. He takes care of his voice more than I care to appreciate lol I wanna hear that scream live!! In Maynard’s 20 sec scream you can hear he is holding that note until all the air in his lungs passes through his vocal chords
Was lucky enough to hear it last November in Toronto. Maybe around 20 seconds at this stage, but still gives goose bumps
@@kbmaclean ima terd. I get more amped listening to the albums than I do going to a live show bc I love undertow Maynard, and I’m old. My friends that have seen them in the past 2 years tell me they are tighter than ever. Incredible.
You got the real scream. You can rest in peace haha
So the bass is actually the melodic riffs you're hearing in the beginning, and in the short bit before the main verse kicks in. Justin Chancellor is one of the most melodic bassists in modern music.
I'm no fan of Tool, but I totally see their genius in creating a song. And you Anna are the best to explain and annalyze that.
Kiitos 🧡
Parabol/Parabola next :)
this whole album is my spirit animal lol......subbed 👍
I could watch you taking to me in a language I have no clue all day.
As a portuguese i dunno much about Finland (other than it seems to be a great country) but i do like and respect how you pronounce the R's! 😆
If you ever get round to a live version please choose a performance from 2001-2002. Another great reaction, one of my favourite Tool songs, so powerful!
Danny can do a long roll like that because his smaller toms have a thicker surface, and it graduates to thinner the larger the drum.
Seems like you had fun with this reaction so I could as well, not a Tool fan but you still made it interesting and therefore fun for me as well Thank You❤😊.
First time coming to your channel. I'll throw out a random song suggestion. Hopefully you bite! American Woman by The Guess Who live on The Midnight Special. Burton's live singing is absolutely fantastic.
I love watching the moment someone thinks, "wait, he's still going?" and then every half second the eyes get wider and wider.
:D
60 notifications today. Saved the best for last.
Tool - Reflection next :)
Not quite music for me, but very impressive, and immensly enjoyable to hear it through Anna's knowledge and inspiring enthusiasm.
Tulen aina iloiseksi kuin kuuntelen sinua Anna. 👍😁
Your insights were interesting. Also you’re easy to look at 😊
3:07 that’s actually the the guitar in the background building up with the percussion. The bass was playing the whole time during that whole part.
I cannot recommend Lateralus enough. Sincerely, someone with your mind needs to experience it
This song is special to me. Kinda like Anna ❤
😊🎶🙏🏼
You seem more focused on what the song sounds like than on why it sounds that way and the meaning. Maynard heard the track and wrote the perfect lyrics about grief and bitterness and beholding grudges that consume you which is then captured in the sounds that the band puts forth. He is just another instrument but breaths life into the track giving it purpose and meaning. It is so much more than tone and inflections and such. It is about pain and healing.
Hi Jimmy! The video absolutely involves technical analysis because people ask for it. If you read the subtitles, I ask about the meaning of this song there.
People who have been following me for a while know that I can get easily over stimulated/moved over songs and what they are about so sometimes I intentionally choose to zoom out on some aspects "live" and ask about them in the subtitles. I have been talking about song meanings in my two other TOOL reactions.
I appreciate your contribution regarding my question about the lyrics!
Thoughts on if you’ve ever heard Northlane before? They combine electronic music and hard rock/metal and Marcus the vocalist has multiple vocal styles. I’d suggest “4D” first for a combination of a lot of things they do well. Cheers.
