During this performance, Maynard picked out one person in the crowd and focused on him/her. Ironically, he now owns and operates a vinyard and winery in Arizona. Cheers!

This song is so powerful because it is so real. To many, this is a daily reality. You literally hate what you have become. Some find a way out, others don't. December 31. 2004, after 16 years, I was finally able to escape the grasp. May I never F'n go back there! Now let me turn this up!

for complexity I recommend "Lateralus" or "Parabol/Parabola", for vocal extremes I suggest "Bottom", "The Grudge" or "The Pot". If you desire to "get" the sense of Tool try "46 & 2" "Aenima" or "Schism", those were their other most popular radio hits back in the 1990's.

The best thing about tool is that the more you listen to them the more you will love/appreciate them. It’s like a fine wine. Plus you do not get sick of hearing their songs. I’m currently on a four year bender, where tool is my dominant band. I saw them first live in 1994 I think in Orlando at a college gym. Took a break from them for a while and then re-discovered there later artistry. And I’m infatuated with everything they’ve ever put out.

The brilliance of Sober is the song is broken down into three parts.
    Part 1. The addict pleading.
Part 2. The addiction/substance prying itself in.
Part 3. The back and forth, the struggle, the acceptance.
    Tool rarely does happy endings.

I regard this song as a masterpiece of brooding and having torment; it can give me chills. It’s true that Maynard is quite in character, and I feel like he is almost an actor up on that stage. Not that he is creating a fictional character, but that he is so into his role that his performance reaches a higher, truer level of theatre.

  • @JariJuslin
    @JariJuslin 10 месяцев назад +12

I understand the song is about close friend of his and the band who felt he was creative only when under influence of substances, but the substances were destroying him. So either he was under influence and killing himself or sober and not making art he considered worthwhile.
I am not sure which path he ultimately chose, but it is clear the torment and misery affected those around him deeply.

I love how the song ends with "I want what I want". Through all the depression and self-loathing, he is aware that he is being selfish with his actions.
Very authentic writing. Most musicians would try to make you feel sorry for them. He is like, "No, I am being a selfish POS with this self-hatred."
It's not a self-serving false cry for support. It is a depressing and real dive into the mind of someone that hates themself.

Another incredible and equally gut-wrenching live performance is their live version of "Pushit" from Aenima, as performed on the live record Salival during the Aenima tour way back in 1997-1998. You can find it on youtube, and while there is no video of that particular performance, it is a transcendent performance, both musically and vocally. It is worth checking out both as a fan of music, and as a professional voice coach.

Your observation of him looking through the audience. It's as if there is something behind the audience that he is battling with. Whether or not it was part of the performance or not, it's very effective.

When you attempt to sing this song you would be really suprised by how much the 'hunch' helps in been able to create the resonance and control needed. It goes against everything your taught, but try it. It is shocking how much it helps. I'd go for Pushit Salival, which is a live performance and really shows off many of MJKs' skills. I studied with many Finnish students and it's great to hear Finnish again. Really good reaction 💜

To me, Maynard is referring to the guilt of mankind in this song, how we human beeings can fail so often with all the possibilities we have, but not using them in a positive way. Maynard sound like EPIKTET, stoic, in a modern thinking form.

For the ultimate in emotion listen to "10,000 Days/Wings for Marie" written by Maynard about his mother. It shows sorrow, anger, and love.

I just found you and you are amazing….. I saw Tool in an old movie theater in Bakersfield California in the 90,s….. I have seen them a total of 6 times and will see them a 7th time in Phoenix on Saturday… They are great and as good as the music live as any band I have heard…

These days maynard sings in the background, switching from right and left of Danny carey's drums. Usually in the dark and he sounds better than ever. Went to 1/21/24 show and it was great.

Finnish sounds so beautiful. Im kind of Biased. I remember my grandfather and relatives speaking it at such a young age. Astoria Oregon where i was born. Yes the film of the Goonies. Has a huge Finnish population and history of immigrants there.

The funny thing too is that Maynard is a shrewd business man who is a very successful winemaker who owns vineyards in Arizona USA and sometimes wears a business suit and black framed glasses.
