In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of Tool to hear the title track from their 2nd album, Aenima. This is a first time listen brought to you by my younger brother, DJ Dan. He couldn't believe that I hadn't heard this great song before. And, after hearing it for myself, I agree that it's a great song! I hope y'all enjoy!

1998 Grammy, has it been that long since this was released?
"And one day you find 26 years have got behind you. No one told you when to run. You missed the starting gun."
To paraphrase another classic song
*cue epic David Gilmour solo
@@lycanthrogenic979 🙂😘
Should've learnt how to swim 😅
love you for saying that. wanna be friends?
"20 years now. Where'd they go? 20 years, I don't know. I sit and I wonder sometimes where they've gone." Another great one about looking back at our fleeting past.
Without a doubt my favorite lyrics in this song is the line: "...don't just call me pessimist, Try and read between the lines, I can't imagine why you wouldn't, Welcome any change, my friend" This asks the listener to not just hear the anger but to think of what provoked the anger. The anger is not the real message of the song it is the root of the anger & discontentment ALL people stuck in the system would feel if the let themselves.
Well said 👏👏
Ditto. I've always loved that point as kid...the cander/sincerity in how it's sung felt like a plea/cry for others to wake up, as opposed to an angry repudiation of society.
"One great big festering neon distraction" what a fantastic way to describe the music business in LA
"Aenema" is one of the greatest albums of the 90s. Full stop.
One of the greatest albums of all time
Wait wait wait wait…
I’m glad you made it here, but it’s alarming to me that you have not experienced “forty six & 2”! It’s a must!
Enjoying your reactions as always sir, thank you for sharing them!
Bill Hicks, who would open for tool, was a massive influence for this song. He's still as relevant now as back then and well worth discovering. Probably more so with the state of American politics.
Yeah his Arizona Bay skit is brilliant. Love how Tool uses a couple of Hicks' clips at the start of Third Eye too.
(...chomp...chomp...chomp) "What you reading for?"
-Waffle House Waitress
it's very striking how Hick's routines still hold up but i think he was lucky to check out when he did. i can't imagine what he would be like today, whether he would be spitting conspiracies on Rogan with Alex Jones or leading the Trump hate bandwagon in Hollywood with DeNiro. it's just better that he speaks to us from the past.
@@stegwise He'd be roasting everyone, both sides and straight down the middle too. A nuclear blast of truth with heavy hand of sarcasm and a wtf were you thinking lesson at the end of it.
I coincidentally just listened to the entire Arizona Bay album today for the first time in near a decade, and was absolutely blown away how much it's just perfectly relevant.
Ænema remains my favorite Tool song. The grooves, the musicianship, the progressive composition, the recording quality, the killer lyrics. It's all there and it's glorious!!
Same here. Glorious is exactly the right word.
Everything he said ☝️🤟
I second that. When I saw them in Berlin back in 2019 and the started their set with that song... Boy, that was the start of a very very special night...
Awesome review Doug, This tour was my first Tool concert Dec,1st 1996, Toronto Ontario Canada at a Venue called " The Warehouse". Back when Maynard was still in front of the band, they were shirtless in shorts covered head to toe in Blue and White body paint. It was really Tribal. I was hardly 3-4 feet from Maynard at the Barrier/Gates.
They opened with a cover of Zeps "No Quarter" It was epic!
I saw this as well, but maybe in Ottawa or New York.
Tool is so great in bringing politics, spirituality and inteligent music come together in such a natural way. There aren't many bands coming close to their level.
I don't know of any that do.
Please let me know if y'all have suggestions
@@kennethalbert4653 gojira is pretty great in these aspects, check them out if you haven’t.
My first concert was Ozzfest ‘98- specifically to see Tool- they were one of the main headliners. Still one of my all time favorite concerts. Tool killed it. Maynard is a genius.
I’d say every member of TOOL is a genius, including MJK
You are the best reaction tuber bar none. I just found your channel.. Just a great mix of visceral reaction/musical knowledge/ and lyrical insight. instant sub.
Almost 500k Doug, congrats man, you make awesome content. I believe you add value with the focus on breaking EVERYTHING down and explaining it.
DOUG!! We need more Tool on your channel! Thanks in advance for all the Tool songs you're fixing to do...😀
Did anyone else have the cd? The reflective artwork was beyond bizarre. Especially the couch scene
Top notch Tool. Never gets old still after 30 years listening.
This is my favourite tool song
that sentence syncs up with the opening riff, cannot unsee
In 2016-2017 or so Ænema was my introduction into tool’s music and to this day… My God! I’m glad I found and I still like their music. This is such a master piece, the lyrics, the instruments combined and what they sound like it is just perfect. Thank you for bringing this reacting to 🙌🏽
Watching Doug geek out to Tool has to be one of the purest forms of joy in existence.
One of the most powerful songs of theirs, to my taste.
Doug almost had a workout listening to it, love it!
People recognize the rhythm, and that makes sense, because 'Danny Carrey', but of course it's every member of the band. Danny's drums. The bass being so prominent in the overall sound. The guitar weaving in and out of the spaces left by the bass and drums. Even Maynard's phrasing of the lyrics is highly rhythmic. And I love their willingness to let it all blend and layer together. It's just beautiful stuff.
He's specifically talking about L.A. The earthquake, swimming in "Arizona Bay" (after California breaks off), asteroids, comets, Mother Nature ("Mom"); all referring to what he sees as a needed purge of L.A.
We know
@@jefferycomer860 The poster didn't.
One of their absolute best in my opinion - it takes you on a roller coaster ride of tones and Danny Carey is thundering on it.
Great review. Saw them back in 1996 in Paradiso in Amsterdam, legendary gig with Maynard painted blue with green fluorescent dots. At the end of the show, they didn’t go backstage, but gathered on stage to decide if they would do one more song. It was of course this one. Epic, and it made me miss the last train home…
I always love your reactions to Tool - thanks, Doug!
Love your enthusiasm with Tool songs! And great looking headphones too!
Hi Doug. First time viewer here. Your analysis is great. I especially like the music theory highlights you identify. Also, the metaphorical flushing of the superficial is a spot-on reception of the song’s message. However, there is one thing you didn’t point out. Just as they layer rhythmic meters, Tool layered another message that is more literal. Maynard is hoping for California to sink into the ocean. That is the context of the lines “I’ll see you down in Arizona Bay” and “learn to swim”. I’m going to find more videos of yours to watch as I think you’re earned a fan. Cheers.
I was just watching the Muse - Hysteria video you reacted to a while ago and now you're reacting to one of my other favorite bands. Im sure you loved "Ænima", it's beautiful!!
New reaction... Rocking the 22' tour shirt., 😮
Tool songs individually tell a great story but they are one of my favourite album bands. Every song is in the perfect place and not just there to fill a spot. Especially the interludes they do like chocolate chip trip and lost keys to name a few. If you ever do a full album reaction it would be great to see!
One of my absolute favorite Tool songs, not that I am even capable or want to put a label of "favorite" on anything they do. I love the song, but I have to hear Cesaro Summability leading into it. The haunting sound of that baby's cry as an introduction to Ænima is just so perfect and with the lyrics of "Mom, please flush it all away" later, it gives an additional impact.
"I love how Maynard tells us how he feels"
Ikr?
After listening to this with you, for the millionth time, I realized it is likely one of my favorite songs of all time.
It is one of my top 2 favorite songs. I've always heard it countless times. But somehow, watching someone else react, I can listen with a slightly fresh ear. I got so I focused more on the musicians over the years. One thing I somehow failed to notice is when singing "let it swim, let it swim", it is prominent, then when Maynard comes in with the main vocal line, it's quieter in the back but it continues (and goes from ear to ear). Then when he pauses the main vocal line, it comes to the forefront again. I never noticed it continued in the back! Unusual technique. I can't think of another song where they do that offhand.
They are coming to Brazil! Finally, a dream come true, I'll attend my first Tool concert next March in São Paulo. Unfortunately on a pop festival (Lollapalooza) but I'm thrilled and extremely happy.
I've been fortunate enough to see them live 3 times. LOVE Tool! Thanks Doug!
Probably my favorite of their songs. That wall of sound in your face that just disappears into a melodic Major that just float on clouds above and then fall back down in a torrent.
It's the drummer. One of the best there is today.
He, Thomas, and Mario. Holy trinity :D
Danny Carey aka. "the Octopus". He can play 4 different timings at the same time. He could do 5. But not with his pants on.
I remember when this album came out, so good been listening to it ever since. Seen it 😊performed live Twice since. Such good music plus o f course, powerful stuff as always
If you are planning an album review, 10,000 Days is the one to do. All (most) of the songs flow together sonically and conceptually. It is, as a whole, a masterpiece.
The title track, "10,000 Days (Wings for Marie pt. 2)" makes me cry every time.
Amazing reaction as always. A full reaction to the Lateralus or 10,000 days album would be magical. Thanks for being you, Doug!
TOOL = Art. Everything they release is pure, masterful art.
Glad to see you back on some tool Doug thank you
Awsome pick! Great analysis!!! You made my day.
I always thought of it as a soul enema
As a native Californian who lived through the Loma Prieta and Northridge earthquakes, a major element of the 90s zeitgeist was a worry about "the big one" in which the west side of the San Andreas fault would literally sink into the Pacific ocean, hence the "Mom please flush it all away". This obviously would include Los Angeles. Also, Doug, FWIW: Anima goes back way further than Jung. It's the word the ancient Greeks used for the breath of god/soul, and is the root word for Animate (i.e. animate object)
Thank you. Didn't know that last part.
Grew up in the Inland Empire. I can still hear my mom preaching to me about the big one for years.
Full album, please. I mean albums. All of them.
Thanks for your take on the meaning - makes complete sense to me. Tool are one of my go to bands when I want music with attitude...!
You are like the only person I’ve seen who can catch there beat blind ! Glad you got a swing at this track👍
It’s always a great reaction with you ✌
YES! the first dude I've seen that counts this properly! Shifts between 6 and 8!
Also, you seem to adopt the pronunciation as (ah)... like 'Arthur'... but that character is more ancient greek for 'a' as in 'fact'. So 'Anima' would be more correct, no? A blend between enema and anima, with the latter taking precedence.
I love this🔥
It's kind of nice that you didn't rush through the whole Tool catalogue so we still get some Doug Tool reacts these many months later. ;)
Aenima or Lateralus would be the best to fully react to. Can't wait!
Yes, please do a full album reaction from TOOL
What an absolute treat to wake up to! THANK YOU DOUGH! :D
The song Aenema from the album Aenima.
What a song.
I love the power of their music, without your technical understanding but some musicality. I love be the way it builds, this is music that slams you in the chest. Danny is a genius, I can’t follow all his rhythms, and as a classical singer I know how to count. Live t really slams you. These thoughts are a bit all over the place. This s music that makes you think and feel.
Most excellent DD!!!
passion for music coming out in this one Doug, seems like your back in the zone!
“I love it with maynard tells us how he feels” - you and me both brother 😂
Grande!!
I have been watching a whole bunch of reaction videos of Wings For Marie and 10,000 Days (Wings For Marie Part 2) lately. Powerful song and many of the reactors ended up crying. It's the acceptance phase of grief where Judith by A Perfect Circle is the angry phase.
I’m a 42 year old man that cries almost every time I hear it. It’s very personal to me, as I’m sure it is many others. It’s raw emotion, and one of the most beautiful songs ever written!
That song crushes me every time, imagine yelling at the gates of heaven for the soul of your mom (BOOM,,, tears)
Sir, it's been a real aenema to work with you.
LOVED JAMMING OUT WITH YOU!!!!💙💙💙
Short path to a full TOOL album reaction, would be the EP Opiate. Not only short and raw, but an excellent example of where they started out. Plus there is some absolutely epic material.
You were talking about doing a whole album reaction from Tool, well I just watched your reaction to Parabola and you mentioned that you needed to listen to the whole album "Lateralus". Well? Let's see it, lol. Great videos and thanks for focussing on my favorite band.
No boring songs from Tool. Tool brought us here.
After 3 (ish) years you really have gone down the rabbit hole...even wearing a Tool T Shirt, Rock on from the UK.
10,000 days all the way through!
Wings into pot into Rosetta is just relentless perfection!
One of my favorite songs ever!
I first heard from Tool by a music reviewer (Claude Rajotte) that presented the band as some kind of mix between Rush and Black Sabbath. I ran to buy the album and got stuck on it since. Yes, this album's reaction would be a blast !
gotta headbang to the chorus, yeah, good stuff, legendary album
Really great video, we love tool as much as you, please bring it even more to your channel, and I recommend you full listenings to their albums.
By the way, anima is the latin word for soul ;-) before Carl Gustav Jung use it for his work
Oh yeah, this was right before he moved outta LA and to AZ. Because he's fucking sincere.
Watch you flush it all away!
RIP Bill Hicks, the comedian's comedian.
🤘🧙♂🤘
"Suck it. It's just your dignity. C'mon, suck it."
Pope Bill
Yep, moved to AZ and started a winery... 🤣
Aenema is one of those generation changing songs...there is nothing I would change about the song...
I love the Rosetta Stoned reaction you did. But your ubiquitous bad timing air drums keep me coming back for more! Your enthusiasm is great.
I am surprised you haven't reacted to this song yet! All the Tool songs to that manner ... Every one needs to be studied in all musical schools all over the world!
It comes from Edgar Cayce's prediction of California and the coast falling into the ocean. It's depicted on the cover when you bend the cd covering the map side. It's Jungian and Cayce interwoven.
You GOTTA do Stinkfist and 46 and 2 from this album. They're seminal Tool.
I call this track A Enema. Thank you Doug.
L.A.-nema
Stinkfist sold me
Bought CD had inserts used on the CD cover. Images would change. Total package, songs and play with the CDs items came with
The 10,000 Days CD had 3D glasses and a gallery of photos. I love when bands go the extra mile.
Looking forward to the full Tool album reaction!! Spiral out my friend!
it was a great reaction, as usual
I got excited that it was a full album reaction 😂 I’m guessing it’s the song which is spelt “Ænema”, the album is called “Ænima”
thanks I'll fix it!
whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat, I NEVER REALIZED THAT IT WERE DIFFERENT NAMES!!
WTAF??! me neither and I've been playing this record for like 25 years or whatever!
Good idea
Kyuss and Monster Magnet are also bands worth to check from that decade.
This and Lateralus were the peaks of Tool. They were never really able to change their sound. Pneuma sounds like it could have been recorded in 1996. But back for those two albums they were cutting edge, totally fresh, unlike any other band. The lyric to this song is easily amongst their best.
Any full tool album is worth your time
“Mom” is Mother Nature.
The Weather Mama
I bought Lateralus the day it came out, and It is my favorite Tool album.
K
It's way past my bedtime. But who coold blame me. This is my favorite nightime broadcast 😏
Still Tool's best album IMO (although I did love Fear Inoculum). For many years, this was my favorite Tool track.
I'd love them to record a sequel to this. As you say I'm sure Maynard is a whole lot more disappointted in the world now.
"The Council of Dougs". That's funny. You're the greatest, Doc.
I'm starting the beginning phases of getting psyched out to go see Danny play with the Beat tour here in a couple months. I've been watching a song here and a song there as the videos pop up from live recordings and the stuff is tight. Dream line up.
TOOL is Pink Floyd for the new millennium.
🤘🧙♂🤘
Love the Tool! You gotta check out ‘80s King Crimson. Tool site them as one of their influences. Odd time signatures, fresh harmonic content and great lyrics. A good place to start is the songs Three Of A Prefect Pair, Thela Hun Gingeet, Elephant Talk and Matte Kudasai. In fact, the entire Indicipline album is awesome. Keep up the good work!
Hi Doug, this is by far, my favourite tool récord. I want to suggest a band that i recently saw and for me is themost interesting band that last from the 80'. The sound was totaly advanced at that time and you can hear itnow and sounds totaly fresh. By the way, singer share name with you. Im recommended totally hear Kings X
Do "46 and 2" please!
We have finally had Elizabeth with Floor. What I want now is Tuomas with Doug!
I'm a little late to this channel, Might I make a suggestion that I haven't seen posted yet. Aenema is the core basis for one of Maynard's side bands, A Perfect Circle. Check out the 1st album Mer De Noms. Not quite as technical or "aggressive" as an early Tool album but, the core is there and shows a different approach. The tracks Judith, Orestes, Magdalena, the Hollow are a similar in vein that continues were Aenema shined.
Simple meters followed by “meteor showers and tidal waves” “let them swim”
"Praying for tidal waves", ties it into the San Andreas fault - which whill eventually become Arizona Bay and Bill Hicks etc.
