I just want to wish EVERYONE who follows Doug and his family aswell all the best in 2022! It's why I love his page so much. Right on! I've been enjoying his explanation of the meanings of the songs, specifically. He just seems like a legit dude that has a good time enjoying his life. Hope he sticks around for a long time.
I was smoking whilst watching this and after following this guy casually for a while seeing him pull out a bong made me cough and almost die. made my day lol
There’s a video here on RUclips of Justin and Danny playing Aenema at Berklee, just the two of them, and it’s freaking incredible. Justin is a machine. I actually gained a new appreciation for his technical skill after watching that.
It cannot be denied, those bass riffs are FONKY! Tool have always been remarkable in the Alternative/Prog Metal community for the prominence of bass guitar in their music. But nothing else in their catalog GROOVES anywhere near as much as The Pot.
OK. Doug hitting the bong as the song kicks the fuck in was legit the coolest YT moment for me in years. I was doing work emails, this was on a different screen - I turn round just in time to catch it - let out a massive 'FUCK YEA DOUG!'
The production on this song is so incredibly good - everything sounds so amazing. What an engineering and mixing job; not to mention the crisp execution.
That bong rip might have been the coolest moment on this channel. Love the analysis…both from the research you do prior to the song and then the music theory going through the song.
It's pretty badass (and baffling - to me) how so many people within the last couple of years are finally getting an introduction to Tool. I bought Undertow on my 13th birthday - which was 12 days after its release - and they have been my favorite band since. This might sound weird, but I actually get enjoyment out of watching people react to Tool for the first time. And as for most of Maynard's lyrics, they're written so the listener gets their own interpretation. Find an interpretation that's relevant to you (when applicable). Try to be a better person today than you were yesterday. Doug, I am now a fan of your channel lol. So keep going. The more you listen, the more you'll appreciate Tool's music.
Doug partakes? This is a fascinating development. You're full of surprises Doug. Another great reaction - this channel really has gone from strength to strength in my opinion.
It’s funny this must be one of his older videos because I’ve seen him spark up in several other videos. I’ve just discovered Doug and must have seen some of his newer videos.
Just one thing: right when you are talking about them keeping a straight 4/4 around 9:23, there is a polyrhythmic thing going on in the background: the whole band is on 4/4 together, and then the kick drum starts to play a 3/8 pattern on top of it. :)
@@lisahillis8973 ??? He was just mentioning a fact about the composition of the song and there's nothing wrong with that, Doug does the exact same thing in all of his videos
Love this channel, love this song, this is only my second video of yours, but I love how you dive in and actually break it down in a great way. Your philosophizing is also great, an educated person listening to great music and able to get something out of it and share with us. I love what you do, keep it up and stay well my friend.
I can’t stop laughing :P One of the best video moments I’ve ever seen on youtube when you bring out the bong. I was suprised, used to see you with an occasional drink. Somewhat unexpected 😇
No shame, Doug. Pleasantly insightful as usual. Thank you for your content. Also, be aware that there is a 2022 Tool tour currently happening, if you didn't know already.
greetings, m'man... You may be interested to note: that "phased meter" (meters of different lengths overlaying, and overlapping, and phasing through each other all over the place) sound, which is certainly a big (If not the biggest) Tool mainstay, is derived directly from "King Crimson"... a shining example of that about which I speak would be the piece titled "frame by frame" on the 'crimson album "discipline": clear as day at several points- one guitar is doing a seven, then a unison track splits off, throwing in a bar of six every other time, and cycles all the way through like that... so now you've got this long cycle... um, Well... thirteen "measures" long if you were the one doing the seven... If you were the other one... one could think about it any number of ways; take your pick, I don't care. the aforementioned album, plus the 'crimson albums "beat" and "three of a perfect pair" are actually where most of the obvious examples are. the only example of this type of rhythmic scheme in nature that I'm aware of would be the Balinese Gamalon Orchestra. perhaps a tiny bit in the music of South India. of course, there is the big one- most of the music of Africa and derivatives thereof... which as you will know is a vast landscape; a fact that is difficult to overstate- "poly-meter" is usually experienced in much shorter cycles though. but in a way that's the only technical difference. The Gamalon- I think that's where Fripp (of King Crimson) said he got it... Or else I just imagined that part because it's the only obvious place... It's been years. I speak of this "origin of "that Tool sound"" as fact, simply because Maynard explained all of this in detail at a concert that I was at. Maynard elaborated with hyperbole and props to the "elder band", who had in fact just opened for them. yes, you read that correctly... a lot of people thought that was odd. It was however strangely fitting... or perhaps not "strangely" just that I can't explain it clearly myself. It's in keeping with Fripps' philosophy of understating himself I guess. at the time (the cretaceous), as a crazy fan of both bands, I could hardly believe my luck at seeing such a show... Peace be upon you, sir.
Being a 20+ year metalhead/guitar player, Tool has been one of the most significant reasons for me to continue listening and practicing various kinds of metal pieces, extensively - Adam Jones’ tone quality, instrumental prowess and musicianship/composure had been a great influence and had real impact on my own style (if something like that even exists 😊). So I must say, “The Pot” is the ultimate piece that the band has ever written; let me tell you why: Tool is almost always revered for their unmatched poly-rythmic wisdom and utmost harmony which manisfest as insane odd-time groupings that feel as if they are creating “divine order” out of “infernal chaos” 😊. Yet this might sometimes cause a kind of progressive divergence in the form of failing to maintain the unnatural hype they initially elevate at the start - mainly in the below songs I humbly practiced and listened on many occasions: - Lateralus (Lateralus): Too much attention to mathematical accuracy overshadows musical prowess. - Parabola (Lateralus): Cannot live up to one of the greatest intros of metal music history. - Schism (Lateralus): Even the extraordinary drum-final is not able to save the heavily descending hype. - Vicarious (10000 Days): Depletes mind-blowing riff structure too soon. - Jambi (10000 Days): Fails to maintain the feel following a masterfully composed heavy section. - Sober (Undertow): Dominated by intoxicating-but-in-a-positive-way vocal sections. - Forty-six and Two (Aenima): Only slightly shorter in time, but it’s there. You might notice, as a result of said divergence, the songs feel a bit “longer” than they supposed to - but then again, these are my own assessments and opinions; so that feeling might be only my concern. Among these masterpieces, I believe only “The Pot” does not suffer from mentioned adversities/conflicts: It maintains all the feel and mesmerizing progression introduced at the beginning, embracing us with carefully dispersed interludes and finishes with a diminished-measure crescendo, summing up a perfectly refined progressive-metal masterpiece. So, from the bottom of my heart, i thank you Doug - for reacting to and analyzing the song. Keep up the good work man!
Hi Doug, I'm not sure if you ever look at bands that do covers of great tunes like this. But there is a great band by the name of "Brass Against" that did an amazing cover of this song. They're mostly a brass band with a drummer, a guitar and an outstanding singer. Thanks for all of your work.
Hey Doug fantastic analysis as always. As a student of music (I started late in life having played by ear for years), I'm learning a lot from you. Loving your journey of metal discovery. Thank you.
Tool is getting ready to play the second leg of the "Fear Inoculum" tour that I saw that got canceled 2 days later from the covid virus thing. I saw them a long time ago for the "Aenima" too. Guys thundered both times. This last one was really perfection. Get tix.
Hahahaha! I am sitting here enjoying my new favorite past time, watching Doug breakdown one of the best, complex bands of my lifetime, when ya pull out a flippin bong! My man! Where do you reside, Doug? Tool has been touring for awhile, doing so now as a matter of fact. As you know, Tool is a musician's band. Almost every musician I have known (being one myself for 40+ yrs) appreciates the level of musicianship from Tool. This particular song is fun with Maynard having a contradictory time signature at the beginning along with Danny's usage of various polyrhythms throughout a relative straightforward 4/4 song for them. This may be their best "pop" song. Great intro of the band to others. Peace.
Just LOVE it when people take the lyrics in consideration! Like most great writers, Maynard knows how to capture our feelings! Doug likes to mirror the lyrics to HIS experiences, but in the end it really doesn't matter..... you can put it to any anger! But let's NOT forget the other members! Each and EVERY one of them, come at you like a knife! After hearing this tune, I'm sure you feel the load less heavy!
RUclips algorithm straight up tryin to bury this, Doug. No way I could've missed this. Glorious and legendary. You have my undying loyalty from now on.
What a coincidence I was searching for a reaction video to this song out of nowhere and see your video which was uploaded only a few hours ago. Great stuff
Adam Jones loves that drop D tuning ergo much Tool D minor. I feel it is a kind of limitation to his playing, but he does it quite well. If you are going to partake this is the song to do it to. Try Passage to Bangkok by Rush (2112) another weed friendly song. Tool would sometimes open their concert with the opening Passage to Bankok riff.
The solo is a bass solo, playing bending harmonics, through an amp with distortion, a wah pedal and some feedback. Reminds me of Cliff Burton (R.I.P.). You might notice the absence of the bass in the rythym during this section. Actually two sections when he does the "Waaaa-ooooo" part right before the big break. Badass. \m/
California definitely didn't lead on recreational weed. They followed behind Colorado and Washington (2012), Oregon, Alaska, and oddly enough DC (2014). In 2016 CA was joined by Nevada, Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont. I give them a B- on this issue.
Watched a slew of your videos, saw you had looked at some game soundtracks I'm a fan of, and tool as well. Excellent content across the board. I've seen too many reasons to subscribe, please keep up the amazing work, and thank you!
I still can’t believe you caught the Fibbionacci thing on the first listen of Lateralus. This is why I subbed. Totally impressive music theory knowledge.
The tones that Adam and Justin are able to create with their instruments are absolutely astounding. I strongly recommend checking out Russian Circles if you want to hear another group that creates huge soundscapes. "Mladek" or "Afrika" are great examples of their versatility.
ooh thanks for the recommend- hadn't heard of them. Hopefully you've heard Oceansize but if not I recommend them; my favorites are the album Effloresce and the EP Music For Nurses (esp. starting from Track 2-end)
So glad I found your channel, looking for Rush's La Villa Strangiato videos. Don't usually watch reaction vids, but after seeing you have done some of my favorite bands (Tool, Pink Floyd, Rush), I've been watching those for the past day. I know you get tons of requests, and I don't expect you to do this soon , if at all -- but I would LOVE to hear you breakdown "Flood" off of Tool's Undertow album, although your ear may be better off hearing "Triad" off of Lateralus for me and everyone else -- It seems to be many variations on the use of triads. I would be amazed to learn that it hadn't been recommended to you numerous times already, with your skills and abilities.Hope Tool Tuesdays remain a thing. Will check out Stravinksi's "Rite of Spring" like you advised in another video. Perhaps you will help me "Broaden my horizons" -- as many friends of mine note when they see my 50 Pink floyd discs and complete collections of Tool, Led Zeppelin, Rush et al. THANK YOU. Btw, this is comment # 420!
No way!! My band just started playing this song! That riff at the last 20 seconds of the song is so heavy. It is always a good day when we are listening to Tool, but this song in particular. 👌

The Pot: The closest Tool ever came to playing funk.

You HAVE to do Wings for Marie part 1 and 2! Right up your alley
Once again, thank you for your perspective again! 🙏 awesome!
Yooo he pulled the bong out I had mine in my hands, and one with ya bro! Straight outta nowhere, starting to love this channel!
“And they leave me wanting more.” You and me both man!
3:56 is where the magic happens, biggest laugh and smile I've gotten out of all of these videos.
California definitely didn't lead on recreational weed. They followed behind Colorado and Washington (2012), Oregon, Alaska, and oddly enough DC (2014). In 2016 CA was joined by Nevada, Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont. I give them a B- on this issue.
Doug, you've gotta check out Brass Against's version of this with Sophia on vocals! Should do a Reaction to that!
on the channel of Go Pato...? the version with air instruments? Is INSANEEE!!
She pissed on someone not to long ago at a concert
She literally pissed on the kettle..sadly that’s all she’ll be known for now..lol
Watched a slew of your videos, saw you had looked at some game soundtracks I'm a fan of, and tool as well. Excellent content across the board.
I've seen too many reasons to subscribe, please keep up the amazing work, and thank you!
Multiple metaphors in this song. Stunningly Brilliant...
MY MAN! Like the second you hit that bad boy. Big fan of your stuff haha you are awesome,
I still can’t believe you caught the Fibbionacci thing on the first listen of Lateralus. This is why I subbed. Totally impressive music theory knowledge.
I celebrate it here, Doug. Well done.
Doug instructed tool that back in the day that was a good thing.
glad i had my bong around when you took that rip because that shit was sneaky
So happy to see Tool back on this channel.
Keep up the great work Doug!
That was awesome! Props to you!
That hit from the bong thooooooo 😂😂😂 I could hardly believe it even after seeing the smoke
Doug must have been SOOOO high! Love it!
You’ve gotta do some between the buried and me. Obfuscation is a personal favorite. It would be a definitive metal monday
Hit that bong my friend. My favorite way to jam to Tool! Spiral out!🌀
Outstanding analysis sir.
8:35 Danny's dynamics are beastly
This song is one of the best examples of things you can do with 4/4.
No way!! My band just started playing this song! That riff at the last 20 seconds of the song is so heavy. It is always a good day when we are listening to Tool, but this song in particular. 👌
Ok you got me when you took a bong rip, I cracked up :)
Damn! When he pulled out that bong and hit it like a pro... I was not expecting that at all!!!
Uh-oh, Doug broke out the bong! Fantastic!! 😆
What an incredible video this was!
Visibility is the key to fighting stigma. Thank you for the bong rip. Sincerely.
When you took a hit I lost it!! LOL! And....I have those same curtains....carry on...
I absolutely LOVE your new headphones!!!! Definitely can’t afford it but it’s really awesome
Any time I have had a shit week I get back to this video - Makes all the difference!
4:04 notable jajaj!! Great videos bro. Keep up!
