In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of Tool by listening to Rosetta Stoned. This song just keeps coming at you, with earthy riffs and rhythmic complexity...all while Maynard is spinning a fantastical tale of aliens near Area 51. This is a wild and amazing piece!

I used to go to their website nearly every day. The writers and creators of the site aren't in the band. For the news feed one day, there was a really long story about hanging out at area 51 and something really crazy happened to them. Then when the album came out, this song parodies that story. Maynard is picking on these guys in this song, which I'm sure are his friends, but there is a seriousness buried in it. They were definitely high, so imagine being the person who really believes this happened to them. Better yet, you can't remember what the aliens said to save the world because you were too high and forgot your pen, typical. 😛

Justin's bassline in that with the changing intervals is one of my absolute favourite parts he's ever came up with! It's so simple but the deployment of it and its context after all the intense, locked in parts - it's so spacey and post-rock and other than a bit of chorus and stuff I LOVE how clean they keep it too!!

Another note on the title of the album is the lyric "10,000 days in the fire is long enough" in the song Wings for Marie. Maynard's mother, Judith Marie, suffered a stroke in 1976 which left her partially paralysed and with nerve pain until her death 27 years later.
    Edit: Typo in the year

I've always seen 10,000 days as a rebuttal to the message of Judith by A Perfect Circle. Both songs discuss Maynard's mother Judith Marie and her battle with terminal sickness. While Judith is all about how foolish she is for remaining faithful despite her illness, Wings for Marie/10,000 Days is a tribute to her strength. "Fetch me the spirit the son and the father, tell them their pillar of faith as ascended." Judith looks at her faith a different way. "Oh so many ways for me to show you how your savior has abandoned you" and "He did this.
took all you had and left you this way. Still you pray, you never stray."
I feel Maynard needed to write a tribute to his mother after such a condemning, angry track he had described her in. He did this masterfully with 10,000 Days and it's one of my favorite examples of repentance and change. "Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance, burden of proof tossed upon non-believers. You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence.
      Judith Marie, unconditional one."

The song is prefaced by "Lost Keys" which shows our character in an emergency room following this event that he's explaining in this song initially to a doctor. After explaining the event he is found to have suffered a psychotic episode by the doctor and sent to a psychiatric hospital where he continues to struggle with the memory of the event. In the end of the song he repeats, "but I forgot my pen, Shit the bed again" referencing that he could have been the hero of the story, saving humanity, but instead is now locked up in a psychiatric ward and unable to control his faculties or mind due possibly to psychosis, prevalent in Schizophrenia, or the medications given to him to treat the psychosis. And incredibly dark and well told story. Great work Tool!

It could also be a retelling of a particularily intense trip on the drug DMT with which it's common (allegedly) to experience profound religious visions and stuff like meeting aliens or thinking you're now the messiah and saviour of mankind. And once the drug wears off you lose memory of what exactly happened, which is why the protagonist should have brought a pen. :) And maybe if you trip too hard you'll also end up shitting yourself quite literally.

"Lost Keys (blame Hofmann)" sets the context of this guy being brought in to the hospital, unable to speak and not knowing who he is, and at the end the doctor asks "tell me everything..." and then this track begins, wherein he definitely tells them everything. Also the beginning is still very frantic and under the influence and as it goes along he gets more and more lucid and aware of his real surroundings, as the psychedelics continue to wear off and "the message" he was meant to convey fades. "Deadhead chemistry" would indicate LSD (ala the Grateful Dead) but many think it is more like a DMT trip since there are references to self-evacuation which is not necessarily common with LSD. Although at least one of those references was indeed the other meaning of "catastrophic failure" as you correctly caught. But since Hofmann was a discoverer of LSD that strengthens the acid hypothesis.

Actually Doug, the album (and its title song) are a tribute to Maynard's mother after her death. 10,000 days is the time she lived paralyzed. The song is extremely clear about it, there's nothing to interpret. Aside from these secondary notions, in my opinion this song is Danny Carey's absolute masterpiece. Initially I didn't like it very much... After assimilating it I find it exceptional.... Practically perfect from certain points of view!
The story being told is not clear to you because this is a song divided into two parts: Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman) and Rosetta Stoned. The first song is not at all that monumental from a musical point of view and there are very few words. These few words, however, are essential to put the rest into perspective. Lost Keys is The very Rosetta Stone to understand Rosetta Stoned. I'm pretty sure your brother will scold you for this 😜

I love that part of listening to a Tool song is trying to figure out what’s going on. It’s such ordered chaos and I love it!

Doug, the 10,000 days / Saturn thing is interesting, and certainly the lead track bears this out. But the title is all about his mother’s suffering. Listen to the title track and you’ll understand. I dare you to keep a dry eye…

I love unreliable narrators in music, i can only think of two songs this and Tribute by Tenacious D, is he on drugs or psychotic maybe both, by the end he's got the worlds most important message to tell you but he forgot his pen. Love it, one of my favourite Tool songs and simple but fun as hell on guitar.

Danny Carey and Blair MacKenzie Blake talking about where this songs lyrics were inspired from.
I cut the following section from the podcast transcript:
... bill manson kind of wandered into our rehearsal
one day and he had gone out to see the integritron somewhere out in the desert by palm
springs space rock yeah and it came back with
some crazy story of abduction and strange briefcases and whatnot is just
quite the story i don't know if if it really happened or if he was writing it for a script or if he was
testing it on us to see how he'd react but it was one hell of a story yeah rating our gullibility factors perhaps
and uh you just have to go with it and go okay yeah i think that happened to me once too
was it there was a million cuts or something all over his body it was a great story yeah i
was just so scattered and beyond though i can't really recall too many the nutty details of it but um
the horror in his voice pretty much said it all which something strange had happened to him you know
immediately i had to go out there and check it out it sounded almost closer to a cattle mutilation rather than an
abduction though there's a fine line between the two yeah
but um maynard was so inspired that he wrote this next song and we're gonna
go ahead and play it for you guys so here you have it rosetta stoned [Music]

It took a LONG time for me to finally stop skipping this song through listens of the album, due to the chaotic and often unintelligible nature of the beginning verses. Especially since Tool (read Maynard) held their lyrics very close to their chest to allow for more personal interpretations to flourish instead. So, I would hear the noise of this song and have to change it, but eventually I did start listening and finding enjoyable pieces within the background of its soundscape, eventually coming to love the transitions, the passages of ethereal timbre, and slowly gauged through words here and there that it was less a melodic poetry and more a irreverent plea from a ranting and raving psychonaut. Now the story and its delivery makes total sense to me, along with the music that accompanies. That just speaks to the nuance you can find in any Tool song that will continually rear its presence no matter how many times you've listened to them
