Yeah this is one of few Tool's songs that require CC especially for me non native english speaker. There is just no way to understand them damn insane lyrics. Its well worth it tho. They are "purple" level squared.

the build up and drop for "overwhelmed as one would be" has to be one of my fav moments in music ever.
It holds so much meaning from a psychological and audial sense. This guy calls it the most "traditional" part musically. And that is the point - it is a harmonic release from the fairly disjointed rhythms of the song. The duality is it fits the story of the song too - that harmony is the moment of clarity the man Maynard speaks as experiences. It's his epiphany that he fucked up royally by forgetting what they said, and he probably doomed humanity because of it.
@@fcon2123 there's a major farcical aspect to the "dooming humanity" thing, which is one of my favorite parts of the song. The character that was "abducted" was heavily implied to be on drugs, and to be kind of a burnout as well.
Even if he was in fact given all this information, no one would believe him anyway. He'd be just another freak talking about the end of the world, and this incredulous story to tell about aliens. That's hilarious to me, especially in contrast to "you are the chosen one" and "such a heavy burden".

I’ve spent the last few months learning every bass track... it’s the most fun I’ve had playing bass since I learned Pearl Jam’s “Vs.” back in 1994. Full stop; top 10 bass players. He’s so deep in the pocket he’s stealing your graddaddys pocket change.
I think the secret weapon is all of them. Danny is a god, Justin is incredible, Adam is technically gifted, and you have maynard, one of the best metal singers ever

Yeah, I feel like it brings even more emotions the more you listen to the song. Like exploring something new and diving deeper with each round. So much to discover.
They can always brighten my mood and get me feeling a way nothing else can. Whenever I’m having a bad day I can throw on any of their songs and forget about my problems for a while. They’re truly something special
TooL, Pink Floyd, and Porcupine Tree are three bands that I can think of off the top of my head that do that for me time and time again.
Thats for sure, been a fan since 93' and they are still the best, only in the last 6 or so years forund tesseract and then about 8 years ago found Karnivool. So love them all!!!!

@@JackCarver10 When the album first came out, I read a review that said it sounds like the songs could have been from the Ænima era, and it was too repetitive. I kind of agreed at first.
It took me a couple of listens to get into it, because the tracks are so long. It’s definitely not a “casual listening” album, but now that I know the songs better and can isolate them as their own entities, if that makes sense, it’s easier to dig into.
I guess what I’m saying is I get it, but after some time I got really into it.

Yes, but the lyrics are an integral part of any Tool song, more so than any other band that I know of.
It’s more than just singing a song, it’s more than telling a story, it’s more than playing his voice like an instrument, it’s more than setting a mood...
It’s all of the above and just as important as Adam’s guitar parts, Justin’s incredible bass, and Danny’s inhuman polyrhythmic abilities and use of odd time signatures.
Take any one of those things out, including the lyrics, and it’s like a friend’s personality changing.
Sure it’s your friend, but he’s just not the same.
@@paulweisgerber7654 I disagree. The voice, inflection, emotion, Maynard's singing is integral, but knowing every word he speaks is not. Obviously, the band feels the exact same way since they've declined to include lyrics in any of their album packaging, which they meticulously craft, until Fear Inoculum.
If anything this "personality change" you speak of occurs when you force a completely different part of your brain to activate when you follow along with a lyrics sheet. Since tool very consciously chose not to include lyrics with their album packaging, despite the fact that most artists did in the 90s and 2000s, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the way Old Composer listens is more in line with what the band actually intended.
The narration of an acid trip is so much fun to hear and read.

When I first read this comment I thought it was dumb but then I remember I bounced off this song intially (was already a house tool fan) but then after a couple listens it swapped to one of their best.

Couldn't agree more. It took me probably at least a year after 10k days came out when I would listen to this on my earphones at my 3rd shift job before finally appreciating Lost Keys + Rosetta Stoned. It's an absolutely incredible song and it's one of their tracks like Third Eye and Invincible and 7empest where it just literally goes on forever but it KEEPS getting more and more insane.

I don't think you need to listen to the whole album before listening to "Third Eye". You just need to be accustomed to Tool's sound. Otherwise, it's kinda overwhelming and difficult to follow.

I mean listen to aenima in full for the first time because it’s a masterpiece
as some have pointed out that Lost Keys Blame Hoffman starts this song off. Hoffman was the man who first synthesized LSD. The skit is about someone who entered a doctors office and refused to tell the nurse what was wrong. The doctor comes in and convinces the protagonist to tell him and that's where this song starts, with him saying ALRIGHTY THEN. Do your self a favor and read the lyrics. They are really brilliant how they set the chaotic nature of a severe hallucinogenic trip and being abducted by aliens. There are a ton of cool references about Charley Brown, The Grateful Dead, the X Files, the Matrix, etc. etc. so please read the lyrics without the song to get every line, then re-read them while the song plays to ride that wave of a trip about being the chosen one to save humanity but not being able to remember that message. enjoy.

You found Tool by studying music. I found joy in studying music from listening to Tool. It sparked a desire to understand why music can move us in largely similar ways. It is an absolute delight to see someone so deeply trained in so many aspects of music experiencing Tool for the first time. A lot of Maynard lyrics resonate with me. An emphasis on lyrics has lead me to musicians like Leonard Cohen and Townes Van Zandt. Even with the lyrics directly in front of you, those initial vocal passes are painfully difficult to understand. I liken it to what others might believe you sound like if you were using a Speech Jammer app in order to talk to them. Thematically, the "cleaner" Maynard's vocals become is symbolic to the protagonist of the song slowly coming down from his incredible high.

A load of the Arcosanti concert is up now. Carina's vocals are particularly impressive, but the rest of the band are so tight too.
11:26 the auto-fade effect you describe has the effect of creating a 'swirling' sensation as you listen if you're in quad channels. Adds even further depth to the listener's experience of being sung the story of a baaad trip.
This song definitely reminds me of one of my more uncomfortable acid trips.

I would love to see you do a review of the two songs "Intension" and "Right in Two". It's best if you had the CD, because they merge flawlessly the same way Parabol/Parabola do. In fact, I hope you do both of these Supertracks. Disposition/Reflection/Triad is another great Supertrack. So much to discover with this band's discography.

Once you read the lyrics while listening to it again, you will have a good laugh. Maynard has a great sense of humor.
I also strongly recommend Orestes and 3 Libras from A Perfect Circle, one of Maynard's projects. You will find a melodic complexity, with different changes of registers, really interesting!
Wings 1 and 2 WITH LYRICS!!! “Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father. Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended. It’s time now, my time now give me my wings”.... I’m sorry but that is some of the greatest commentary on human ego you’ll ever hear... like all his lyrics. Truest medicine I’ve ever discovered. And the Dead can come along too!! 🤘❤️😆
If you do Wings 1and 2 with lyrics you need to do Jimmy from Aenima and Judith from A Perfect Circle then Wings 1 and 2. Those songs form a story arc concerning Maynard's mother. Very heartfelt, angry and tragic.
Maynard doesn't scream like that as much. It's always pretty calculated when he does it. He has a few songs where he shows off his lungs but when it comes to the more distorted esque screaming vocals, Ticks and Leaches off of Lateralus is the song to check out. It's also one they don't play live frequently cause its pretty harsh on his vocal chords.
Same with ticks and leeches because theres so much screaming in it.
Around 10:00 you looked kinda uneasy. That's how I feel listening to the narrator tell his story.
