I love listening to professionals talk about their craft and dissecting great works. As a professional artist, I feel a kinship with it even though it's a different discipline. Great reactions.
Killer reaction to a killer track, love it. You are fast becoming one of my favorite reactors. I've been into this genre for about 2 years, I got into it watching reactors who are into hip hop/rap listening to metal/rock for the first time in any meaningful manner. Which makes it interesting for obvious reasons. Along that journey the vocal coach reactors started popping up, the enjoyment from them (I'm not factoring in anyone's personality, just what they bring to the table otherwise if that makes sense) is of course they dissect the tracks on a more technical level with a focus on the singing. Then we start seeing the reactions from the composers, the engineers, etc. The really technical group, but there are a lot less of you. The fans aren't kidding when they drone on about how freakishly technical, creative and cerebral Tool is, so when I see you picking up on all the meter changes, overlapping time signatures, the poly-rhythms, their use of the Fibonacci Sequence as a way to count syllables in the singing, and all the other crazy shit this band messes with I get almost giddy, lol. I'm not a musician or engineer or anything, just a music fan who's been into this band from their beginnings (my fav band btw) and has just learned about this stuff along the way. It's so nice to see these things we as fans talk about, realized by an expert and professional in the biz who isn't familiar with the band (yet) whom explains it all to use plebs so we can REALLY start to understand this stuff as a lil more than laymen. Anyways I'm stoned as fuck and eating mozzarella sticks and rootbeer while I watch this and type out my reaction to your reaction and I'm rambling, lol. I hope you stick with this because yer good at it, your content and personality are damn enjoyable my friend. Signed - Some Asshole townie from Boston :D

Becoming a huge fan of this channel you got a great personality and good in depth conversations on these songs the bass line by Justin Chancellor gives me chills everytime
You are spot on with the comment about how he stands with the band versus in front of the band. The few times I have seen them he hasn't even faced the crowd and faces the drums.
So as kid, I grew up around music. My father has a collection of 6,000 records and a large volume of reel to reel tapes. Any time that any of us came home excited to hear something new we found he'd listen with us with the same enthusiasm. Then he'd say try this and tell me what you think and put on a record. We learned to appreciate and listen more closely that way. I was fortunate to figure out and realize at a young age that just because I didn't like it, doesn't mean it sucked. It just wasn't for me, it was still good, just not a personal preference and that helped open my worldview quite a bit. These videos remind me of those moments a helluva lot. Thank you for that.
Mate you said you haven’t seen tool live?? Im a 39 year old dude from Australia and I have no idea how you stumbled across my feed, but your great please keep it up, I will personally pay for you to attend a concert near you. You owe it to yourself to accept this gift. As a Thankyou for doing these.
Maynard's voice is really clear and nice on this track. It makes me so sad that he's dealing with the after effects of covid-19 & that it might be detrimental for the rest of his life. It's just sad, glad he didn't die but for a guy who relies on his lungs and vocals it's just really sad.
@@DadaPoopoo its not death thats the real concern, its lasting effects to your cardiopulmonary system. There's already been a few pro athletes that have needed to retire from the after effects.
This was my first thought when I heard he'd gotten COVID. 😐 He's super health conscious, I hope he's able to recover fully and the long term affects are minimal if any. 🙏🏻
Really appreciate your comments on how those brief moments of 4/4 help cleanse the sonic palette as you put it. After listening to Tool for so long, I've recognized when those moments occur instinctually, but never really understood technically the why. Regarding Maynard position during a live show, there's a bunch of rumors that go around that its some kind of performance anxiety or discomfort being up front, but that's really not the case. In the earlier days of Tool, MJK was upfront most of the time (think on that Sober video you watched) but as the band really matured into Aenima and Lateralus, he decided to refocus the audiences attention more towards the band as a whole since they are as key to their sound and success as he is. He's talked about how he deeply respects each member and their sonic contribution and enjoys watching THEM play live. When you come back from hiatus, two recommendations. If you want to go the third eye route (literally), and go really deep into the Tool ocean, there is a track by the same name on the Aenima album which is unlike anything you've heard. Or elsewhere in the depths of their catalogue and given other videos on your channel prior to these reaction videos, I think you'd especially appreciate the three tracks together of Disposition-Reflection-Triad, musically, lyrically, spiritually, and technically.
Thank you for commenting. I really enjoy these types of comment where I get a better understanding both about who is watching my vids but also about the band it it's members. 🤙🤙 I really appreciate it.
Your reactions to Tool have started to open my ears to the nuances in their songs. I've actually noticed more from Tool, musically, than I ever have in all the years I've listened to them. It's definitely great to see the reactions from the people who notice, then relay the technical aspects to the viewer/listener.
I absolutely love The Pot. It is for sure my favorite Tool song. But I have to say, that part at around 12:27 is just mind blowing. As you said, I feel like this is a reintroduction to the main riff of the song which, although sounds rhythmically very interesting, is a pretty straight forward 4/4. BUT Danny just decides to mess with our brains and while the whole band is nailing the pocket of this huge groove, his feet are playing a 5/8 figure in the bass drum, which transforms this rhythm in something so much more layered and complex. It is pretty amazing.
I found myself having a slight laugh every time you stopped the song. Not laughing at you, laughing with your need to stop, understand, describe, and enjoy. This is so good. Thanks, and keep it up. We love it.
@@gravytruck Speak for yourself. Maynard writes great lyrics but when it comes to being a vocalist he doesnt hold a candle to guys like Bruce Dickinson or Dio.
This channel is awesome!!! I could listen to you talk all day long, even with my limited understanding of what you are actually explaining!! Thank you for doing what you do and looking forward to continuing this journey with you!! 🤘🤙
Maynard did not want his performance on stage to distract from the music/the band. He performs from the back of the stage, backlit...no spot lights on him.
All these are good facts about why he’s back there...yes he was out front early. I’ve heard him say it’s about the entire band and the art. He doesn’t need to be a “front man “ that would take away from the art.
Thank you for your insight to the technicality of their music. It just brings my appreciation to a whole new level. I think As a composer, wings for Marie and 10,000 days will absolutely melt your heart for music.
The healthiest, most fun series of RUclips videos I’ve seen in a very long time. So cool. Please keep being you and don’t change what you’re doing in any way.
First and foremost, aye howzit bra. This is the beauty of being a ToOls fan. The complexity of levels and rhythm changes are what makes this band so unique. Mine as well throw out any meters or measurement tools. This band triumphs from not just having one lead but equals across the board that make listening so enjoyable. Many non-fans say that this band is to complex, these are usually the same people that can't listen to classical music. The richness and depth of each song be it the acoustics, the instrumental flows, tribal or celtic nuances, this is the reward we get for being ToOls fans. I mean there's just oceans upon oceans of music that's just so blah out there. And then there's ToOl. The only way I can explain it, it's like being on a Rollercoaster, while surfing in a heavyweight boxing match. Not many bands can take you on a journey with each and every song, like they can. Most of those bands such as Pink Floyd are from a much older era, but never ever forgotten and any true fan that hasn't enjoyed this journey in between pods or cans should be tarred, feathered, mulched, fed sticks of butter then lit and thrown over the wall. I'm just so happy I was around to bare witness to the band that is ToOl. And now thru you watching and counting, losing count and then punched then uppercut. Your facial expressions of surprise and awe are a great joy as if I was hearing for the first time again. Thank you for this. Also before I forget huge Kudos to the Production team. Oh and in terms of vocal people that are so powerful and unique, Chris Cornell immediately jumps to mind. But like you mentioned we'll just hear more about him from the vocal coaches.
I look forward to every pause in your videos to hear what you interpret and feel and digest from the sections in their music. Really enjoying your assessments and looking forward to more for sure! Can't wait to hear your view on the "sonic palette cleansing" in Invincible or overall review of 7empest! Thanks for the content!
Glad you're having fun with these, nice to see an expert react without being obnoxious about youtube culture. This is my favorite Tool song. I'd love to see your reaction to some of the modern math rock that's been coming out as you've said you're something of a guitarist. Invalids would be really cool to see you analyze, I'd recommend A Rather Mediocre Genius or the live version of Idle Promises.
Another really enjoyable reaction. I'm learning a lot from you. As a 50 year old listener of rock, hard rock and metal for most of my life to finally have a professional willing to take his time to dissect what I've been listening to and explain it, even in basic terms is a real treat for me. Ty
I'm a drummer as well as a bass and guitar player so I really enjoy people like you who can break down the elements of what goes into their music and analyze what they do. Don't ever feel shy about nerding out; we're here to see it! If you want something complex to break down, we'd love to see you do Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned. Also my favorite Tool song is a 3-parter called Disposition/Reflection/Triad. I think you'll really enjoy the meditativeness of that piece. Definitely see if you can do those on a format where the songs can transition seamlessly. Keep it up!
Glad you enjoyed this listen. The Pot may actually be my favorite Tool song, and that's a difficult thing to say with a band as good as this. So many good songs. I think the thing I love most about this song (and correct me if I'm wrong) is that it doesn't seem like he sings a line the same way twice except for the "Weeping shades of indigo" line that gets sung twice in the middle bridge section. It seems like he is at least changing some little bit of every line. It's a hard tune to learn/remember and tough to sing correctly. But oh what fun it is!
It's true. I've seen them twice in concert. Both times you barely saw Maynard. He was usually in the dark back by the drummer. You usually just saw a shadow of him projected on a wall or something. Pretty cool!
I love watching people who know music discover tool; invariably they all realize how special the band is. lb 4 lb it just doesn’t get any better than them
as a fellow musician, tool is absolutely unbelievable. keep in mind however as amazing as they are, they also had an amazing engineer in the studio which rings clear in these songs final mix downs. the engineer on their stuff is a genius.
Maynard's vocal is a next level mix of alternative shoegaze innocence at times with militant metal man and also, especially in this song, a kind of hard rock R&B soulfulness of notes in his lines. As he's singing on the outro, he's doing similar stuff Hank Williams did to bend his lines in kind of Bluesy ways. The guy also arranges and writes all his vocal lines against the other guys' music! Maynard is a highly talented, very intellectual musician as are all the Tool members.
As a longtime listener of Tool and part of the toolarmy way back since dial up internet; it's always refreshing to see a new person actually listen and hear tool as band. As you put it they are all instruments and they all are Jedi's with their abilities. A full circle, the pieces fit etc etc. We all took different paths with Tool but in the end we all end up in unity. I can see you are truly trying to understand their way of play. That's why I'm here that's why I subscribed. Keep doing what you're doing I'm digging it. I go to my boys Lost In Vegas for lyrical breakdowns. Either way I'll still watch lol. Seems to be a thing with MJK his musical circle follows him around wherever he goes.
Absolutely no need to apologize for stopping. 1) It is your channel. B) You have some really good stuff to say that always adds to the view. Love this stuff!
It's so refreshing and rare to hear intelligent insightful Tool reactions. Please do more, there are so many gems I can't wait to hear your opinions on. Please don't leave out Lost Keys / Rosetta Stoned. You might need a couple of hours to dissect that one. :)
You made the absolute classic 'The Pot Breakdown Face' 🤣🤣 Since the day this came out, I still lose my shitevery time that part kicks in! Loving your videos, I have been extremely by humbled watching Tool reaction videos. Remembering what is that makes me deeply love and cherish this band. I once upon a time had the same feelings you are experiencing, very cool for me :) Keep spiraling out my friend, your time is appreciated!!
I've seen professional instrumentalists react, I've seen vocalists react. I love seeing a composer react. You bring new perspectives to react videos that us tool fans love to see. People are very enthusiastic about this band and I love to see how they bring others in that haven't heard the songs before.
Can we as the Tool army who watches every reaction video for the pure pleasure of seeing peoples mind get blown, give this guy the props he deserves?!? Best reaction series ever!! KEEP IT UP MY DUDE.
As a guitarist, I initially listen to new tracks from a guitar point of view. It's really interesting hearing a composer's first listen. Another cool video! 🤘🎸🤙
Rossetta Stoned would be a good one to hear too off of the same album. On a different note, Devin Townsend would be a good one to explore, complex sounds, you might like it, check out Kingdom on EMGTV as a start. Good show.
Your comment on Maynard being effortless is bang on. I've seen Tool a few times, and A Perfect Circle. Maynard's control of his voice is insane. He never looks like he is straining. You're breakdowns are great. You always know when to comment. Love your work!
I think it's so cool how people get into different elements of music. You bring a perspective I haven't seen elsewhere, someone who knows about composing and mixing, so it makes sense that that's what you pay attention to. Lyrics are always what hit me, which is part of why The Pot is my favorite Tool song. It's the perfect mix of instantly understandable with a deeper meaning if the listener really wants to get into it. I love Tool, but some songs are six levels deep lyrically, and you almost need to take classes in Jungian psychology to follow along, lol.
There were a couple of observations in there that I felt were absolutely spot-on. Like when what you said about Maynard sometimes keeping himself "behind the band". A friend of mine told me about a show he attended in which Maynard almost shyly stayed back behind the amplifiers for almost the entire show, only to show himself near the end. Another was in an interview where he said that he only starts to develop his parts after after the other guys send him theirs, and he has spent some time sitting in his truck somewhere listening to them. Great stuff. All I know is that it's awesome, and definitely working for him.
I've also slowly come around to Reflection. It takes a while to truly appreciate how good it is, at first you're just like "ok, solid instrumental" lol
4 over 3 polyrhythms everywhere in the guitar and vocals in this one, the 3 is actually part of the group of 4 that makes up the standard 4/4 time signature underneath everything. great song!
Your comment was spot on about some of us who are not that technical but still want to take a deeper dive into what we hear. Your insights make me listen with fresh ears these songs that I love and understand a little better what makes them so compelling to me. Thanks for these videos.
Bottom is an underrated Tool track and should get some recognition, I’d love if you could react to it. A bit of an older one, but so great. It has Henry Rollins have a part on it, I also made a cover of it for anyone willing to check it out. But I love seeing new Tool fans going on a very familiar journey through the music, keep it up I really love seeing it 👍
You never give Alex enough credit, the guitarist because at 10:00 to 1030 of your video right before you pause alex does some incredible work. The way he pulls and holds is outstanding.
Sun's out, cans *on*. "Now you're weeping shades of cozen indigo, got lemon juice up in your eye." Indeed, that sounds like it comes from 'a purple place' Such ear candy, diabetics have died listening to this.

Do not apologize for stopping a song when you. It want REACTION!!!! I want COMMENT!!!! From a knowledgeable person. You are awesome.
That's the point :)
And when he stops, we know that something qualitative is expactable
Comment away !!
You are spot on with the comment about how he stands with the band versus in front of the band. The few times I have seen them he hasn't even faced the crowd and faces the drums.
I think you're gonna absolutely love The Grudge.
I have been listening to TOOL for over 20 years now.. I still have no idea what you are talking about. Love it!
Damn. This is the first time I've heard this. :(
99.5% of people don't die from Covid. He's just getting old.
@@DadaPoopoo Sincerely, dude. Fuck off. Don't bring that shit here.
Enjoying watching you calculate in your head and feel in your gut - and when the two meet in that cosmically happy place.
Enjoy the break, we'll be here waiting.
🤙🤙🤙
I absolutely love The Pot. It is for sure my favorite Tool song. But I have to say, that part at around 12:27 is just mind blowing. As you said, I feel like this is a reintroduction to the main riff of the song which, although sounds rhythmically very interesting, is a pretty straight forward 4/4. BUT Danny just decides to mess with our brains and while the whole band is nailing the pocket of this huge groove, his feet are playing a 5/8 figure in the bass drum, which transforms this rhythm in something so much more layered and complex. It is pretty amazing.
Took a break from studying and played this video. Was just what I needed. You're the man Geebz!
Thanks man - means a lot🤙. For me when I take a break I'm watching Scary Snowman :)
Sending you some support from Costa Rica. Always end up with your analysis of the music when just looking to listen to Tool.

He said "Third Eye" Anyone..... Anyone
Isn't that exactly what "cozened indigo" is referring to?
I found myself having a slight laugh every time you stopped the song. Not laughing at you, laughing with your need to stop, understand, describe, and enjoy.
This is so good. Thanks, and keep it up. We love it.
Maynard confirmed that he doesnt stand in the back because of some anxiety or fear, he actually stands there because it works better with the drums.
I heard that he also loves to watch Danny play as he sings.
@@charlieconlin7367 that is amazingly cool
@@charlieconlin7367 God, I hope that's true!

Maynard’s voice is way underrated.....
By who? They must be out their mind.
Underrated? He's a God among regulars and the regulars all know this. 🤷♂️
Yeah, amongst people that are into rock/metal he's always near the top for best vocalists.
@@gravytruck Speak for yourself. Maynard writes great lyrics but when it comes to being a vocalist he doesnt hold a candle to guys like Bruce Dickinson or Dio.
Yeah he’s awesome. But it’s interesting that his voice was pitched up in post in this song. They do this song in a lower key live.
This channel is awesome!!! I could listen to you talk all day long, even with my limited understanding of what you are actually explaining!! Thank you for doing what you do and looking forward to continuing this journey with you!! 🤘🤙
Wow, thanks! 🤙
Maynard did not want his performance on stage to distract from the music/the band. He performs from the back of the stage, backlit...no spot lights on him.
thats totally whats going on, but he claims he just stood there because its easier to do his job when hes watching danny. it makes sense both ways.
In one of the interviews he states that it also helped with the music, less other noises entering his microphone.
He hasn’t always done that.
All these are good facts about why he’s back there...yes he was out front early. I’ve heard him say it’s about the entire band and the art. He doesn’t need to be a “front man “ that would take away from the art.
He said on an episode of Joe Rogan that it’s all cuz of the sound. He can hear the other 3 better back there
"an emotional appreciation" - that's an excellent phrase! well done, another excellent video!
Mr Geebz. Tool will always be the most important reviews you do. It will garner the most attention due to fandom. Appreciate the review
Thank you for your insight to the technicality of their music. It just brings my appreciation to a whole new level. I think As a composer, wings for Marie and 10,000 days will absolutely melt your heart for music.
SO HYPED TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS CLASSIC TRACK
Tatiana from Jinjer also writes her lyrics for their songs after the guys have put the music together.
The Pot covered by Brass Against is a cool take on this song with a brass horn section. The video is here on youtube if you're interested.
Was going to suggest the same thing. Outstanding cover.
Even if not a reaction video, I think he should at least watch it in his downtime. :)

I love watching other people enjoy Tool as much as I do! Awesome video! Beautiful analysis!
Enjoy your videos, appreciate your perspective and passion for music. I subbed and look forward to more content.

4 over 3 polyrhythms everywhere in the guitar and vocals in this one, the 3 is actually part of the group of 4 that makes up the standard 4/4 time signature underneath everything. great song!
