Cleansing your sonic palate...best analogy I’ve heard for the 4/4 chorus of this song. Tool tends to do this pretty often in their music. Great reaction!
As a professional chef I REALLY appreciated that analogy too. In fact, if the opportunity ever presents itself, I'm stealing it and gonna work into a conversation hehe.
A journalist once said to Danny "you delve into odd meters often, but when you play in 4/4, it's like a celebration." He knows how and when to just straight up groove after working the odd times in Tool's songs.
When you said, "Oh! Now they're going to go back and mess with ya," I laughed so hard. They love to sort of drag our emotions up and down with their songs. It's definitely a journey to really hear Tool and hang on every note.
Actually first time I’ve watched a reaction from someone and listened to everything you said. Loved your insight. Keep your empathy for the musician and the meaning of songs and you will be a star:)
Dude your commentary is frigging dope. I love listening to your insights! Keep doing Tool but consider doing Gojira, Mastodon and Meshuggah for some heavier stuff!
The ability TOOL has to constantly resolve these different time signature changes in different places throughout the arrangement is nothing short of pure brilliance and talent. It’s ultimately what makes them so great and so unique. There will likely never be another band to do it as they have, and I’m so glad I’ve had the opportunity to bear witness to their musical masterpieces.
As a composer I honestly believe you will have your mind blown after listening to Tools discography......they are masters of their craft and composers like no other band...
You lucky dog. I had 9th row for Grand Rapids MI...the closest tickets I had ever gotten...then covid.. they cancelled. I am still devastated. I have total ticket jealousy of you...
This is one of THE most amazing songs ever written. I cannot stop watching various reaction videos. I’m seeing them in January for the Fear Inoculum tour and I’m out of my mind with anticipation!
You should definitely absolutely give Schism a listen. Tool are renowned for their use of pentatonic meter, and I really think you will like the meter changes in Schism... All 47-ish of them.
As a drummer, for me there are lots of delicious tidbits here, but I think my favourite is the fact that the volume of the crosstick in the beginning and end oscillates between pianissimo and forte! (To those who don’t know what that means, watch the crosstick (where the stick is flat on the snare and the notes are played on the rim of the drum… it goes from soft to loud and then fades away)… If you haven’t tried it, certainly do! It’s not as easy as it sounds if your independence is basic because the dynamics only oscillate on the left hand, but not the right. The right is always constant. Then, of course, is the middle instrumental section with the mind-blowing orchestration of what’s essentially Swiss triplets around the kit. Sounds wonderful. I have always maintained that the most satisfying drummers are ones who are able to make complex things sound easy. It’s fairly easy to make easy things sound complex - just throw in more notes and you’re all set. But to arrange your parts in such a way that everything sounds cohesive AND grooves while requiring you to EARN the ability to execute it? Well, that’s why some of these cats are masters. Another great example of that is Vinnie Colaiuta’s work on Sting’s Seven Days. Sounds simple to a non-musician. Try playing it the way he does. Best of luck. 😉
Absolutely this !! A more reserved side of Tool , but for good reason. The back to back tracks deal with the passing of Maynard’s mother. The album title “10,000 Days” is actually a reference to the amount of time she spent partially paralyzed after having a stroke. Part 1 is amazing , Part 2 is nothing short of a masterpiece , in my opinion.
@@michaelnorman6905 He uses his fingers on 10,000 Days only. He uses his fingers for almost the entire song, he gets a pick from his mouth at the climax.
Finally, someone gives a great commentary on the time signatures in that. I've watched a couple of drummer reactions and they couldn't figure out the time signatures. Great vid.
I’m glad you broke down what Justin was doing at the 7:07 mark. His playing during that section is never talked about. The airy, flange effect (could be wrong, I’m not a musician) he’s playing sounds so cool. Just one of those cool minor details I didn’t recognize on first listen.
You are entirely correct, it is a flanger. I do want to give the guitar some credit too: it is still playing the exact same riff as before the change, butt stopped the palm-muting. Definitely contributes to the "airyness" to let the notes sustain.
Your reaction to one of my favorite "modern" Tool songs is priceless! You got excited about all of the things I got excited about (and still do!) in this song as a musician. Keep it up!
You have a unique and learned perspective with years of top level experience. We want to hear whatever you have to say. So get out of your own head and say what comes to mind. We will love to hear it.
There is no comparison. Tool took that song and completely owned it. In particular the instrumental section, which in Zep just feels kind of wayward. Tool honed it down and translated it into their own language: they *composed* it, where Zep was sorta freewheeling ...
Hopefully when the world finishes melting, Tool will go back on tour and give you a chance to check them out live. I was lucky enough to see them a few times over the years and can vouch, that they're simply amazing on stage. Fun stuff so far (reaction wise) Keep it coming!

Was just listening to someone else listen to Pneuma (studio version). If you haven't reacted to that yet, I recommend it. I think you'd have a lot to say about how it was produced in studio. So good.
I like how you describe things. I'm about as far from being any sort of musician as you can get. But the way you decribe what you're explaining makes it all make perfect sense.
Carey is such a complex drummer and extremely technical and makes it look so simple and like a walk through the park where most drummers would be lagging behind!
Man. I watch a lot of these reactions for some reason. Love seeing people react to stuff I’ve loved for decades. Floyd, Rush, Tool, etc... You take it to another level. Appreciate the knowledge.
I love the fact that you are one of very few reactors who caught his mistake towards the end of the song. Bravo sir!! Goes to show that even the best make mistakes. But it's really impressive that he was able to carry on and not lose focus or where he was at in the count.
There was a mistake? I'm no drummer or musician so this is all like magick to me. (Well it is magick, but you know what I mean) I didn't even catch him catching the mistake! 🤣🤣🤣
@@mattwilson8298 He does! Right about the 15 minute mark of Geebz' video. Geebz clearly catches the mistake because he reacts to it (non-verbally). It's easy to miss because Danny is able to just quickly carry on without missing a beat.
I noticed while sitting in the left hand lane once that all the turning signals appeared to blink randomly, then slow, suddenly blink together and begin to separate. In the universe everything begins and ends with zero, yet the energy is infinite (0=2)... This band captures that.
I'm going to lower myself to begging that you react to Puscifer - Bullet Train to Iowa. It's the same vocalist as Tool, in case you weren't aware; the 3 groups he fronts are all amazing, he seems to attract genius and produce as such, consistently. The production and composing of Bullet Train are mind-blowing, in my opinion, and I really want to see an expert experience and dissect it. Mat Mitchell did a brilliant job composing/producing the album and somehow made 80's synths sound modern and fresh, while giving familiar warm and fuzzy vibes. I'm glad you're making a place here, subbing for more gloriously detailed analysis.
This is a great song. Tons of respect for the musicians. Have you done much with Unleash the Archers? Their song Awakening is probably something that you would enjoy from a composition standpoint.
Tool is the very definition of the fifth harmony. Which, for those who don’t know, the fifth harmony is what they call when you get all four harmonies to sync up together so perfectly, that it makes it sounds like there is a fifth. And that’s the best way to describe Tool! It’s like they’re all doing solos, just at the same time.
This is Danny Careys' "hey God.....remember me??" moment... My music teacher used to call these type of time sigs "borrowing". You take from the bar ahead, pay it back a few bars later, borrow some more later on. We learned later about syncopation.
You have no idea how much I want you to react to The Patient by Tool. It has a lot of cool production stuff you could talk about and there's a part at the end that makes it feel like my soul is leaving my body.
Fantastic video, man! Many more gems down the Tool rabbit-hole, let me tell ya. Another thing, if you're gonna talk, pause. You have so many interesting things to say compared to other reaction channels out there and that's what really sets you apart ;) btw totally down for some jazz/fusion or country reactions.
"Clear your PALATE before the next meal." I think Maynard would be happy to hear that analogy.
*palate
Actually first time I’ve watched a reaction from someone and listened to everything you said. Loved your insight. Keep your empathy for the musician and the meaning of songs and you will be a star:)
Thank you so much, Paul :)
Dude your commentary is frigging dope. I love listening to your insights! Keep doing Tool but consider doing Gojira, Mastodon and Meshuggah for some heavier stuff!
Top notch recommendations. A man of culture I see 🤘🤘🤣
Yes, yes, yes and yes
Gojira!!!
Fist bump
Gojira is my 2nd top favorite band besides Tool 🤟🤟
The ability TOOL has to constantly resolve these different time signature changes in different places throughout the arrangement is nothing short of pure brilliance and talent. It’s ultimately what makes them so great and so unique. There will likely never be another band to do it as they have, and I’m so glad I’ve had the opportunity to bear witness to their musical masterpieces.
As a composer I honestly believe you will have your mind blown after listening to Tools discography......they are masters of their craft and composers like no other band...
Just what I’d always hoped for - a college course in tool. Ty🙏
I was in the 4th row, center, at this show. The entire performance was amazing.
No way.
@@Itsunclegabby “Yes way, Ted!” ruclips.net/video/JCtEA9e_wp0/видео.html
You lucky dog. I had 9th row for Grand Rapids MI...the closest tickets I had ever gotten...then covid.. they cancelled. I am still devastated. I have total ticket jealousy of you...
@@Kj-ec7iz Oh no! Sorry to hear that! I really hope that gets to happen for you someday.
Every Tool performance is amazing
YES YES!!!! To continue your tool journey I would recommend "wings for Marie" part 1 & 2 and you need to do that in order
I second, third, and fourth this recommendation!!
I tear up every time I hear the "Give me my wings" climax in pt.2
Absolutely yes to this!
For this one, lyrics are required
Also, Descending.
I’m glad the channel was popular enough to reach my eyes. Awesome videos man and thank you
The bass player, Justin Chancellor, actually uses a pick
Was going say the same pretty sure uses the pick on everything I have ever watched of him.
@@michaelnorman6905 I think there are literally only 2 tool songs that he doens't use a pick on
@@haydn995 10000 days and?
@@mehavingavietnameseflashba7132 I was going to say undertow the song but Justin wasn't even the bassist
Great vid.
"This is actually an agitated tug and pull of rhythm ..." I understood that and think it describes a lot of Tool. Nice insight
I love Dany's posture & how buff he looks @ 59 year old, this guy is a genius in my books.
Can’t wait until you hit “46 + 2”
He did, go check it out.
@@dmartinez1993 I wrote that a month ago.
@@benjammin7729 hahahah awesome comment im always looking for word like that :D
I’m glad you broke down what Justin was doing at the 7:07 mark. His playing during that section is never talked about. The airy, flange effect (could be wrong, I’m not a musician) he’s playing sounds so cool. Just one of those cool minor details I didn’t recognize on first listen.
You are entirely correct, it is a flanger. I do want to give the guitar some credit too: it is still playing the exact same riff as before the change, butt stopped the palm-muting. Definitely contributes to the "airyness" to let the notes sustain.
Awesome reaction, try Parabol/Parabola. Powerful pair of songs.
Might be two tracks on the CD but it's one piece. But agreed.
@Jen Striker yes, and?
Don't apologize for what you do. The longer reactions are fantastic and definitely appreciated.
You are my new favorite reactionist. Please keep making more videos!!!
Cleansing the sonic pallet...awesome!!!
I'd love for you to listen to tools cover of led zeppelins "no quarter", maybe listen to both and do a comparison
There is no comparison. Tool took that song and completely owned it. In particular the instrumental section, which in Zep just feels kind of wayward. Tool honed it down and translated it into their own language: they *composed* it, where Zep was sorta freewheeling ...
One of the very few persons I've seen decipher Danny's tempo and time signatures so quickly. You're the guy...
Hopefully when the world finishes melting, Tool will go back on tour and give you a chance to check them out live.
I was lucky enough to see them a few times over the years and can vouch, that they're simply amazing on stage.
Fun stuff so far (reaction wise) Keep it coming!
I finally saw them back in September last year. Was dreaming about seeing them for like 12 years, can’t believe it actually happened, and right before all this bullshit happened. One of the best nights and best concerts I’ve ever had 🥲
I saw them last October for the first time... I'm so glad I got to see them live!
I had tix to see them in Eugene last March, but lockdown happened that day (they played Portland the night before)😓
I've watched the Pneuma video by itself so many times. Its so damn good. He is a wizard behind that set. Seeing them live is a WHOLE different experience too.
This is so fun to watch as a major Tool fan and a drummer dabbling in Tool covers. I couldn't click and like fast enough! More Tool please!
"From finish to end" 16:16 . That's deep :D
Man, we appreciate all you do from your perspective
I appreciate that
Its like a nostalgia high watching you hear these for the first time, I wish I could hear them again for the first time. Love the actual knowledge appled unlike a lot of reacting stuff and you seem like a good dude. 10/10
So awesome you see the light of Tool...so much talent on each instrument including the Mic..
Real analysis of Tool. Excellent perspective from a composer and it shows.
Man these videos take me back to the feeling had during the heart of the covid lockdowns. It was like a depressing escape but in a good way. I look back at it with fondness
Fawk yes, I’ve been waiting for you to do this reaction!
This guy could’ve just made a living off listening to the whole tool catalog.
Love ya man, can’t wait for the next one
Here for the long videos, as long as your insight is authentic I’m here for it! Another great job.
"Hey it's in 'D' again. 🤣🤣 Damn near every song of tool's is in D. Heh.
Love this reaction series... mahalo!!! Cheeehooo
Cheeeeeeee!!
2:22 Adam Jones just LOL'd when watching this when you said that haha!!!! Drop D baby
Be aware that one of their major influences is Robert Fripp and King Crimson.
Yes- useful background info for him for future reviews of the band, especially as a composer.
Danny has been my inspiration for almost 20 years and dude deserves it.
Great song and reaction, I’ll add my vote for Parabol/Parabola, where Tool takes the listener on a similar journey
I’ve been listening to TOOL since 96’ and somehow someway watching your videos helps me enjoy TOOL under a different light!
It's easy to miss because Danny is able to just quickly carry on without missing a beat.
the joy on your face is amazing when you see something amazing.
The grudge! And btw, great vid
Soooo layered 😎🙌🏻 like 5 songs at once
I noticed while sitting in the left hand lane once that all the turning signals appeared to blink randomly, then slow, suddenly blink together and begin to separate. In the universe everything begins and ends with zero, yet the energy is infinite (0=2)... This band captures that.
You have no clue what you're talking about
Nothing short or phenomenal behind the kit man. Dissect it however you want. Amazing.
Their Arco Santi show was flawless! I love the record entirely.
I for one value the “ramble”. You provide me another way to view some of my favourite music and I am enjoying the ride.
Favorite reaction channel...awesome job bro on everything.
You have no idea how much I want you to react to The Patient by Tool. It has a lot of cool production stuff you could talk about and there's a part at the end that makes it feel like my soul is leaving my body.
Thank you once again for posting.
🎶🎼😎🎼🎶
Wish they did the whole concert video this way. It would be cool all 4 members in each corner of the screen.
Keep 'em coming!
a drumming masterpiece , that snare sound is perfect
Excellent video. Probably the best reaction to this song I have watched. You have a unique way of breaking things down. Love watching the gears turning in your head as you analyze a song in a way very few of us can.
I love the insight from a professional into the music an simple chimp listening to Tool! I know nothing about music but love it. It’s really cool hearing what is going on, it gives me a while new appreciation to what I already love.
Wings for Marie 1&2 are mandatory reaction material. Rosetta Stoned is a wild ride sonically. And 7empest will really challenge your ear. I'd love to see your reaction to any of those.
