    What I absolutely loved about Portnoy's cover is that he didn't have the kit (or time lol) to really recreate what Danny did during the whole breakdown / bridge phase, but he came up with something that was both close and made it his own. And maybe in some context someone could read that as a bit of a slight, but it's nothing short of incredible what he did in just a few hours.

      The funny thing is he is actually struggling because it ISN'T a mathematical equation and that's why its a struggle. You can't break it down easily because of the odd timings and poly-rhythms. Recently saw an interview where Danny Carey talks about music "breathing" which is a pretty good description of how he plays drums instead of a formula.

  • @missinbrain

    It's impressive that Portnoy can learn another person's complicated parts so quickly. It's also impressive that he can make the bridge section just a little more "him" without changing the vibe. I'd love to see Danny try a Dream Theater song.

      I've been trying to express to my other musician friends what an insane rhythm those verses are in. I can't even find the 1. When I say that, they look at me like I'm stupid, and I say, tell me where it is then! 😂 I can find it, but it's REALLY hard to anticipate it.

  • @Titanium_Cranium
    @Titanium_Cranium 6 месяцев назад +23

    Pneuma has a strange time signature that once Mike thought he'd found the sequence he had a lot more success, treating it as combinations of bars of 6's & 5's but the order of the bar counts over the length of the piece evolves as it continues, hence we have one of the hardest drum tracks to replicate, but in the time he had, Mike killed it. Danny's complete version of course is simply mindblowing.

    I haven't learned this song but for what I understood, the main riff is 33/8 (hence the 33 on his jersey) split in measures of 6/8 and 5/8. The whole song plays with sections of 3 and polyrhythms in 3. Portnoy had to record it in parts because he couldn't do it in one take. That's how complicated this song is. He did an amazing job.

That said, not to take away from the insane ability here, dude knocked it out of the park completely in such a short amount of time.
