Saw them recently, and it was the normal band setup completely inverted. Drums on a pedestal center stage flanked by the guitarists on either side and Maynard slinking around in the background. Danny is really the star of the show. That said, they really do play _together_ and their songs pass the motif between all four members.

It’s super cool....during the “polymeric” middle section, Danny is busy doing his Swiss triplets, which then transform into double hits with both hands. In the midst of all of that, the band is playing a simple 4/4 time... all the while, you’ll notice that Danny is keeping the hi hat going at the same 4/4 the band is playing while he is doing his 3/4 triplet progression with his arms. Amazing the way he can separate his brain like that.

Carey takes what Peart started into the stratosphere. Peart hit his innovation peak on Hold Your Fire, then mostly fell into a rock-rut that, drum solos aside, saw him play the same stuff over and over again with diminishing technical demand.
Carey, though? He goes far beyond any of the polyrhythmic, independence, odd time, and speed experimentations that Peart ever undertook in his songs. Plus, he’s always innovating. He never repeats parts in his songs, unlike Peart, who played that La Villa Strangiato ride pattern a million times over and repeated a ton of other parts in his tracks following Hemispheres.

More then any other band out there. Tool uses Maynard’s vocals as another instrument. He doesn’t sing above the music, but within it. He doesn’t even stand at the front of the stage, but he usually stands in the shadows to the left of Danny’s drum set. Maynard’s vocals are absolutely one if a kind in the rock world, you should definitely reacts to more zoo their incredible sings. You will be swamped with subs from the Tool Army if you do. As a start I would suggest the live version of “Pushit” from the Salival album, as well as their cover of Zeppelins “No Quarter”. You will love them both.

well getting justin as a bassist for tool was the best decision in their entire career. but i guess part of the change in their style was also about maynard. i feel like the songs he wrote were always kind of therapeutical for him. he wrote a lot of his anger into his songs and he changed as a person growing older. that's why the music also made a shift starting with lateralus and later 10000 days and fear inoculum. well fear inoculum actually has elements of all previous albums before that in my opinion.

I have subscribed JUST based on this reaction alone, because I have just discovered you. I absolutely LOVED your reaction, because even though I have been a Tool fan for decades, I felt the way you felt when I saw this video. How have I never watched Danny alone before, why isn't every single Tool song drum-cammed? Why isn't SOMEONE on this obvious lack in our world? That needs to change.
Anyway, I am glad you seem to like Tool and I really hope you do more. You will discover that Maynard is one of the best vocalists alive (THE BEST, IMHO), but for Tool, his voice is considered another instrument to the band, that is their philosophy, so his voice is usually (there are exceptions for artistic reasons piece to piece) mixed equal with the other instruments, instead of front and center like most lead singers in most band. But Tool is not most bands. Tool stands alone as their own genre, and you will see this as you travel further down the Tool rabbit hole. No two Tool songs are alike and there are no bad songs. You will also discover this as you continue on.
Have fun and stay safe and I'll be here for all the Tool :D

the thing with Tool.. mjk “the lead singer” considers his voice as one of the instruments of the band, not a front man it all goes around.. so he blends in better.. also him and danny were neighbors and best friends when they started the band, he loves watching danny play drums, in fact during concerts he stays in the back next to danny and u can see him sometimes just watching danny play drums... so the singer and drummer r more in tune with each other i would guess
