@@SAScheidt Really a shame I don't get to "like" this comment more than once. Because I would. My mom was born in 53, and she - for the most part as far as I can tell - shares your view on music. She has even expressed some regret that she didn't listen more to the "extreme" music - whatever that was for any given time period.
Same exact thought! In fact it surprised me this time watching this "reaction". I honestly assumed I had heard it too many times to still get goosebumps, pleasantly surprised!
I'll never forget one of the many times I've seen Disturbed live. David stopped his set and refused to play until the mostly male crowd stop groping the women who were crowd surfing. Spent a good five minutes telling them what disgusting pigs they were. Never experienced another artist who commented openly on very common practice for the day. Mad respect for him plus his angelic voice.
I’ve been to many gigs over the years and always get involved if there’s a chance to crowd surf. I get groped, touched sometimes hit and slapped etc…. I’m a man, women can be just as handsy as men, probably worse to be honest because their aloud to be. You won’t hear me complaining because honestly I’ve got a life and that 10 seconds isn’t going to affect the rest of my day. Sometimes when you’re holding someone up in the crowd it’s hard to see where your grabbing/pushing the crowd surfer. If you don’t want to risk it don’t do it but don’t complain like a little snowflake get on with your life
@@reyrey9458 I've been to many forums over the years and I always get involved if there's a chance to complain to a complainer. You don't seem to get that people are different and not all are carbon copies of you. That means that their perspective will be different from yours, but good on you if you don't feel it necessary to complain about groping during crowd surfing. What's interesting is that you *do* feel it necessary to comment on what other people should complain about. Seems you're a bit touchy about this subject, almost to the point of being a little bit snowflaky yourself. Why don't you just stop doing this and get on with your life? //Hugs and kisses!
@@reyrey9458 "it’s hard to see where your grabbing/pushing the crowd surfer".The following might be surprising for someone like you, but women have a working brain that lets them know grabbing from groping, they do very well without your guidance. And if she felt that these touchings (those SHE felt, not you in YOUR experience) were normal human reactions according to the situation (which is your case), she wouldn't even complain. That means you're are NOT actually getting groped man (lol), you're just being pushed and grabbed, ocationally in private parts of course, as normally as it can be in a gig context, that isn't getting groped. I don't wanna describe what it means to be genuinely getting gropped and harassed in a gig, but man, if you knew... you wouldn't be saying such stupid things. What you're missing here is empathy, something that helps you understand "hmm,, I'm a man and she's not, our situations are different, that might mean that the way people grab her might be different than how they grab me", man it's something so basic and easy to deduce that it's almost embarrassing to have to explain it. That being said, I use to go to gigs too, and the chances that you as a man get *genuinely* groped at one, are vey low, but if you actaully get groped (again, genuinely groped), 99.9% chances it was a man, not a woman. And if you were honest to yourself, you would say the same.
I highly doubt that happened. 95% of men would never do that. We are raised since birth to respect woman. someone touching you in the wrong place is one accident is common as men don’t know where their hands are placed. Grow up Karen.
Quit listening to the lyrics and just hear the vocal sounds and understand that that's one man without autotune basically issuing a challenge to every person who has ever considered themselves a good singer with broad range. Whether you like his music or not, he is one of the most talented vocalists to ever exist.
I was like “he didn’t just say that right??” I had to replay it just to make sure I did hear what I thought. #DeafVocalCoach Haha, is statement really got me 😂
Considering David was sick with the flu, fever of 103 during this show. He's sitting down because he didn't have the strength to stand. This man is legend. Absolutely one of the best voices today. Trained as a cantor. Can you tell I love David Draiman?
I read this somewhere else too. My nurse brain is having a hard time just vibing with this performance because he LOOKS like he has the flu. 😂😬 Poor dude. But what a performer.
The thing that impresses me the most about this cover is how absolutely intentional it is. Loud to soft, low to high, clear to rasp all lend to what the song is trying to say at any particular time.
Someone else in the comments noted that it was said that S&G's version was a warning of things to come, and Disturbed's version was an expression of anger because we did not heed the warning. So absolutely 100% every single thing he does in this cover is intentional to showcase that emotional statement.
I’m classically trained cellist. He can turn that pure tonal depth on and off across his harmonic range! This is the perfect example of genre hiding absolute incredible raw pure talent! Just love him!
David is classically trained. He is also well educated. His writing is 🔥. If you read the lyrics to his songs, you'll see the religious references informed by his traditional Jewish upbringing.
Former Cellist here, and the first time I heard this amazing rendition, all I could think is that his baritone register has a very cello-esque resonance to it.
Yes! Thank you! Exactly. I' was a big disturbed fan back when down with the sickness came out..but the choir nerd in me loves real singing like ths... and a comment said he was sick this nite like the flu and 102 temp.. and I can see subtle shifts in the big notes to compensate...but the official version shows his full ability.. those vibrating bass notes that send chills to that upper register effortlessly and powerfully belting the crescendo of song (I think that's the correct term, but the fireworks after the build up that will lead to a softening backing off to end a musical piece) ..I never knew he had that kinda ability. I never thought a genre bending cover would ever top Johnny cash's nine inch nails cover of 'hurt'.. but vocally, well, the league's arent the same(johnny was emotion and lyrics and music and delivery and deep dark notes unheard of in radio music, and his cover was perfect, emotionally so perfectly worded for his life and loss of his wife as he said his final goodbye to his fans, music, and the world to be reunited with his love.. I cant comprehend that it's a metal cover still, bc that song was made for his delivery of it.. a final bow that I cant name a single example that comes close to competing with... and obviously this isnt a final word for disturbed.. but the cover you never saw coming.. and the dark depth and just emotional connection that makes it hard to remember they didn't write it..that its not their biological creation of a musical offspring.. main stream has so few true examples of true vocal ability, even where it exists, it no longer sells.. the dumbing down of vocal talent ..esp from a man, let alone a rocker who dabbled in sceamo vibes... I hope he writes a ballad that shows this sorta range and ability one day so he can get the credit and respect he deserves for our generation, just vocally.. I bet he was classically trained, or grew up with parents who listened to more opera or something classy vibes.. I could see how down with the sickness's abused and angry letter to an overbearing and abusive mother he was standing up to (literally, he does a spoken rant telling us that much...) .like money, snobby, reputation, perfection demanded maybe made his take piano and voice lessons as a kid ..and his rebellion and hate led his to rock and releasing the demons she caused.. as a rocker, it's obvious he can sing.. but he SANG.. been hiding his full greatness prolly steamed from fear of failure or hatred for conforming to the competitive and misguided greed and societal hierarchy that pretends perfection, judges others as beneth them and often hide such horrible secrets that destroy their children .... obviously this is pure speculation based on what he openly shared in the very beginning of their music and success in disturbed... but I bet hes got classical training as a child.. it would tie together his rock ability with the vocal ability he just showed effortlessly here. Sorry , i am just floored I didn't know he did this cover bc this is the kinda song I'll have on my permanent playlist ,bc it hits everything music should. The message, the emotion, the ability, and my personal niche in music favorites.. the curveballs of the unexpected (sometimes it the vocals, or the lyrical brilliance, the ability to suck in the sound/voice but say something so well,so neccessary, so real that it transcends into talent .. and his rocker show never bothered showing us hes not just good , hes damn good. He could succeed anywhere he chose vocally.. Broadway, opera, choral, mainstream, rock actually downplays it and that' itself is crazy. Since rock is the only genre thats popular and has men who sing and play instruments and write their songs still... 😂😂❤
You need to listen to the bands own video. David had flu when he sang this, his own video knocks spots off this one. It makes grown men cry. This song was about the lack of communication when TV became popular, (and the people bowed down and prayed to the neon God they made). When David sent it to Paul Simon, he was very nervous. Paul said my version was a warning, your version is the rage because the warning was ignored, it's your song now. Now that's the highest of compliments.
thanks for saying this. the original has waaaaaay more "gravitas" that he should really experience, now. and thank you for sharing what paul said..it is exactly the feeling.
Paul never said that -_- he never said ANYTHING like that. He did however endorse this cover and ONLY this cover. The "This is a warning but your is rage" is complete bullshit thats been passed around the internet since they did this -_-
"Holy Hermione Granger!" 😂 I love your reactions. It's difficult to listen to such a beloved song being covered. Most of us probably have doubts; such a beautiful and legendary song, and your reaction shows the surprise and joy with this very different version. David's voice is like no other.
@@harleybicknell9375 quote: Before David Draiman became famous as the singer of the heavy metal band Disturbed, he trained to be a cantor. ... Either way it shows he had vocal training prior to being in a band.
@@RavenAnima certainly trained but he’s been quoted himself as saying he isn’t trained classically. Just a rumour. He is also auto tuned a LOT in this performance which is a huge shame because his voice is absolutely phenomenal and his power is earth-shattering. The tuning ruins this version for me 🙁
Side note...he was actually sick when he sang this that night on Conon. He is a phenomenal singer that sounds just as good live as he does recorded. He is the epitome of never judge a book by it cover, hands down the nicest guy ever, and multi talented.
He really is a great guy. My brother has met him a few times and he always stops to have a conversation with him. On top of his phenomenal vocal technique, him being a great guy makes me love him even more lol
Well you can hear its autotune. And that makes me sad cuz David was doing such a good performance that he didnt need it. Not sure how they ended up using autotune.
I lived during Simon and Garfunkel period and it was beautiful then. Now I’m 68 yrs. old and am very thankful I’m alive to experience this version. It is even better by Disturbed.
@@sherynlabate1683 David Draiman is a ridiculously talented vocalist, and a very good song writer in his own genre. But credit to Simon and Garfunkel for writing this masterpiece so David could take his turn singing it.
It's said, that 100 different versions of this song have been made by professionals. THIS version is the ONLY one that prompted Paul Simon to pick up the phone and congratulate Draiman for his version.
I hear you. My friend and I have decided it is this and Joe Cocker's "With a little Help" I say with a little help because of the sad attempt by Ringo.
As a fan of Simon and Garfunkel's original and I am a child of the sixties, this has got to be one of the most incredible renditions of this song I've ever heard. The man is singing with his heart.
I too heard this song the night it was performed on Conan -- I cried so hard as I was so moved by this version- always loved the S&G original version having heard it hundreds of times- but had I been standing- I would have fell to my knees in my weeping over David's presentation - and the orchestra was an excellent addition
Paul Simon emailed to Draiman: “Really powerful performance on Conan the other day.” Since, he has said it is his favorite cover of the song. With his control, chest voice, head voice, face voice, Draiman has had a vocal coach for decades and said in an interview that he could not have sung this song 20 years ago. He wouldn’t have known how. If it moved you, it is art; and, Draiman is an artist 🙏🏻🥰 Yay for vocal coaching making this cover possible!
Don't feel a traitor, Paul Simon likes it too. "In April 2016, Paul Simon endorsed the cover. Additionally, on April 1, Simon sent Draiman an email praising Disturbed's performance of the rendition on American talk show Conan. Simon wrote, "Really powerful performance on Conan the other day. First time I'd seen you do it live. Nice. Thanks." Draiman responded, "Mr. Simon, I am honored beyond words. We only hoped to pay homage and honor to the brilliance of one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Your compliment means the world to me/us and we are eternally grateful."" [Wikipedia]
You should hear this LIVE. I saw them perform it when it was still new and the huge crowd was...well....SI-LENT.....to the last hint of sound. THEN the place EXPLODED! It was the thrill of a lifetime!
RIGHT I watched them live in 2018 and just. Holy shit. You could just feel the electricity during the silence during this piece, even after it had been out. The audience didn’t sing with him, and just. The chills.
Ive heard this song so many times and every fucking time he gets to "And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made" my throat constricts and I get tears in my eyes.
Me too! It’s embarrassing how many times I’ve watched others listen to, & “react” to this song on RUclips-my obsession has reached the point where I hide it from others because I look like such a dork🤩It might even be worse than my addiction to Eminem reactions😏 IMO, the Conan/live performance beats the recorded/video version simply because it’s freaking LIVE & he was sick!
I played this music video for my elderly dad and his buddies in assisted living. They are all late 80's and early 90's and were expecting Simon & Garfunkel. Those old men loved the Disturbed cover. Now when I go back to visit them they always ask me to bring more Disturbed for them to watch and listen to. The lesson is never judge a book by its cover. Great music is great music, period.
Simon straight up said, that this is not our song anymore, and openly admitted, that this is exactly what they originally wanted the song to be like. Straight up the best cover ever made of a song. For me that has been a fan of Disturbed since 2008 with Indestructible, it was the first song since Darkness from Believe of 2002, that really took this kind of acoustic approach, and showed David's incredible range in a more calm way. Disturbed is such an amazing band, and David is easily in top five of best vocalists of the 21st century.
Having been a diehard Disturbed fan since I first heard Stupified in 2000, supporting them for over two decades, seeing all of the critics either crap on or ignore them to now seeing everyone blown away by not only David’s phenomenal vocals but Dans arrangements, I feel validated and so proud of them.
@@iplaywithrocksforfun Take it with a grain of salt since it's just something I read somewhere. But supposedly David was pissed off with this particular performance since production decided to add that without him wanting it.
Can we appreciate David's style for this performance? Pitch black slacks, matching button-down shirt, and the floor-length black coat? That man has style.
It was such a powerful performance, the audience held absolutely silent until the echoes of the last note faded. This is one of the all-time masterful live performances.
David Draiman is one of the most underrated vocalists of our time. By far. Simon and Garfunkel can take all the credit for the lyrics but unfortunately Draiman and Disturbed have them beat at it everywhere else. David Draiman doesn’t get nearly enough credit or praise for his vocals, and that goes for everything he sings not just this.
I liked the performance but Simon and Garfunkel still is the best. It has a naturalness that here is lacking. He re is a performance. In Simon it is like a moment of life.
David draiman studied for years to be a cantor, so he didn’t just open his mouth a d gold came out. He worked hard. He’s a really intelligent and very well-rounded musician/vocalist. I mean, he is a real singer, and understands his voice and how to use good technique (including the mic) to create a real experience.
No he didn't lol he wasn't a trained cantor nor was his father and grandfather go watch an actual interview with him his dad ran a mental health facility. And he had no real training until well after disturbeds second album....
I liked when he mentioned country. Next frame commentary. He said going to stop talking and play the rests the remake gives me the chills amazing vocals and powerful. Love it
The first time I ever heard it was on the radio when it first came out. I had visible chill bumps up and down both arms. There’s no volume too high to listen to this song. It still gives me chills. My husband was really resistant to listening to it bc of S&G, but once he heard it, he was sold.
@@julielockhart1904 Not the result of the world not listening that would mean it is to late. This version is more out of anger that the world did not listen the first time.
Conan actually said when he was finished the entire crowd was stunned. Absolutely flabbergasted at the performance. Some were crying, others were speechless.
His mouth should have been agape from the Auto-Tune slaughter. Instead we're treated to 13 minutes of a guy who is a self-described professional, but yet has no clue that he's listening to a computer-processed voice.
@@erichimmelheberYES HE DID but Simon and Garfunkel’s version was “IT” for its day and time. And, yes it was a warning at the time and, no, no one listened. As stated in a comment later, this represents the rage that no one listened.
Honestly, their version of this song gives me chills EVERY time I hear it. Especially this particular live performance of it. I've probably heard it 100 times and I still get the goosebumps. I think if the preliminary bias like you felt wasn't there, this could have been very popular. Pentatonix does a very good job as well but this one is on another level. Thanks for reacting to it Ken. Great job!
as a singer myself, I am just blown away constantly by all of the different levels and shading and tones he uses throughout this song. It's like five different people are singing this, and it's all just one amazing man.
I grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel...I always loved this song, but when I heard this version...I cried. It still moves me to tears every time I hear it.
Disturbed’s version made me pay attention to the words of this beautifully written Paul Simon song!! I listened to it for the first time years ago and like you, was blown out of the water! This is pure Tribute to Paul and Art!
So fun watching different professional people hear this for the first time, it NEVER disappoints. Classically trained to be a cantor, what a treasure, his voice.
OMG! I'm 65 years old and I love this version. I loved the original also, as I was a young person when it came out and sang it in my junior high chorus. This version is so very powerful. It can be about our world today.
@@lydwinaofschiedam2685 Same here, though 68. The original was a gorgeous tune, but really didn't convey the emotion that it was designed to do. This one knocks it out of the ball park.
60 here and have an extreme dislike for remakes in general. This one knocks it out of the ballpark. I will give this high praise indeed by saying that I believe it is better than the original classic by Simon & Garfunkel. This one has so much emotion and sucks you into the emotions of the song far better than the original did. I have heard other remakes of this song that are mediocre at best and utter crap at the worst. Great job Disturbed!
When Paul Simon heard this version he told Disturbed the song was now theirs. Also, David was sick when he did this performance. As far as his abilities he was classically trained and being trained as a Cantor as his father and grandfather before him.
Where do you guys keep pulling he was a cantor out of your ass and that he was classically trained he spent his teen years as an addict and never had a vocal coach until after disturbeds 2nd album this info isnt hard to find here is a hint type David draiman fact or fiction your theory is shot in the foot by the man himself.....
Art Garfunkel sent a personal thank you to the band on the release of this song because he was so amazed by their version. David Draiman is one of the best singers alive in my opinion, regardless of musical category. He also trained as a Jewish cantor so definitely no country 😂😂
So, David is an absolutely underrated singer. Yes, his band has been in the metal genre for decades. However, he has an incredible range and vibrato. Early in his life he had surgery on his vocal cords. Also, like others here have said, during this performance, David had the flu. Unbelievable performance even with the slight auto tune. I personally prefer the studio version to this live performance, but that’s just me.
Look for concert footage of him singing this with myles kennedy. There are a couple with good audio quality, so you might have to search a little. But its worth it if you find one of the good ones.
I was thinking the same thing. He was good here, but his other live late night performance was definitely better. Can't remember which late night show it was. But here, he actually sounded a little "late" in a few parts. But he was very good.
Disturbed is a band for emotions. Even tho they might sound hard at first, their songs are all pretty powerful when you listen closely. The emotions leads this band, what makes them so incredible. Davids versatile voice made their music one of the most influential and emotional important music in my life.
I really love it when people come to the realization that hard rock/metal singers have more depth in their voices than they are ever given credit for and when they cover an iconic song, they usually take it to a much higher level than the original.
I’ve watched so many reactions to this song. I watched yours twice. You can literally see in your eyes the moment you hear his voice that you soften, you’re literally pulled in. It’s so beautiful to watch the power of music & how it goes straight to the soul. I sent the Disturbed version to my 76 yo mom. Her response was simple. “Amazing”
I love seeing vocal coaches reacting to this version of this song. They are almost always blown away by David Draiman’s vocal techniques. As soon as I saw you had done this video I knew it was going to be a good one!
This song touches me so much. I used to sing but, cancer damaged my throat and I can't sing anymore but, the feelings are still there. David has the most amazing voice.
Ok Ken....thank you for opening my mind and my ears. I had asked my daughter a while ago if she had heard The Sound of Silence. She said no and proceeded to pull up this cover. I immediately said nope...there is no way anyone can compare to Simon and Garfunkel’s version. I stand corrected....this version is amazing. I will be a lot more open minded from now on. Thank you!
If you'd like to hear a version that is much closer to the original, check out Peter Hollins and Tim Faust covering this same song. The Disturbed version is probably my favorite, but Peter and Tim proved a beautiful and haunting rendition, while honoring Simon and Garfunkel.
I can recommend another cover of a different song. That would be, Nightwish - High Hopes. I never thought I could recommend a "cover" of Pink Floyd. Nightwish never considered it a cover, but rather a tribute.
Disturbed's rendition on Conan is going to go down in history as one of those timeless, iconic performances in history, like McCartney's Hey Jude on SNL and Queen's performance at Live Aid. People will be watching it and doing this version Karaoke in 40 years.
It's a beautiful thing to watch someone's attitude go from haughty to amazement to being a convert. The power of the epiphany is why I love watching reaction videos and it never gets old!
One thing I love about this song is that it's a social commentary. We place a great deal into things that don't matter that much and ignore things that need attention. We are afraid to speak our minds. The use of the kettle drums really adds to the song.
I LOVE that you admitted your bias. Disturbed is an AMAZING band, and David Draiman is such an unbelievable vocalist, you can’t even imagine. Thank you SO much for reviewing this!!!
So, story goes David had a cold for this performance. His "team" applied an autotune to part of this performance that he didn't know about. He was pissed. This dude has an amazing voice.
I could see your appreciation of the music and his voice on your face. As a metal fan, I wish more bands would show their artistic talents in this way. Many of them have beautiful voices and really can sing.
Inasmuch as I love the original Simon & Garfunkel "Sound of Silence", and always will, I must say that Disturbed gave the song a new depth of life that no other rendition has ever come close to duplicating. My absolute favorite version.
Mine, too. I can't listen to Simon and Garfunkel's version anymore because it's too "happy." Disturbed put a dark, mysterious and prophetic vibe to it that I love.
No matter how many times i hear Disturbed version of "sound of silence" I'm never bored of it or disapointed...it was so different to their normal music...maybe try reacting to some of their heavier stuff :P
When my daughter was 3 months old she was having an unbearable wailing fit in the back seat on a road trip. When this song came on she immediately stopped crying and calmed down as the song progressed. As a long time Disturbed fan, it gave me chills. But I don’t blame her, it is a fantastic version of the song and it has a similar effect on me. 🙃
Disturbed's version of this song sends shivers down my spine every single time I hear it. So beautiful and powerful; the song's message comes across loud and clear.
He is??? Wow I didn't know that, never looked into Disturbed more than learning that he's named Dave, but this performance really shows it. Incredible vocal extension
Brings tears every time man. David is very educated in music against his parents wishes. This man has a range as well or better than Axl Rose. He has many phenomenal songs, some on great spiritual and sensitive social issues. Listen to more of his music to hear his ranges.
I just found this song about a month ago and I can’t stop listening to it. It evokes some deep feeling that I can’t describe. Both versions have their place in time.
This made your reaction even more special. Now, you have to react to the official video. Along with the visual it's a transported experience. I find myself watching reactions to this. And,Your reaction is exactly what I find every single time. Thanks.
This is what I call a true artist. To sound exactly like your recording in your live performances is a true talent. This singer sounds exactly like the recording they done. Also the video that they did with this versions really adds to this amazing version.
This is true I've seen David Draiman several time's live. Over dozen at minimum the man voice is iconic. Him and Serj Tankian did a song together simply amazing.

David is a classically trained cantor. His range is crazy and incredible. He doesn't get enough credit!! 🥰🥰
What is "coixe"? (Googled it but that didn't help).
I didn't know this! No wonder he has such amazing control of his voice.
Leading a band with low quality musical output doesn’t help
Truth! He has a great baritone voice
Quit listening to the lyrics and just hear the vocal sounds and understand that that's one man without autotune basically issuing a challenge to every person who has ever considered themselves a good singer with broad range. Whether you like his music or not, he is one of the most talented vocalists to ever exist.
“I’m getting a country vibe”

Hahahah brilliant comment
Considering David was sick with the flu, fever of 103 during this show. He's sitting down because he didn't have the strength to stand. This man is legend. Absolutely one of the best voices today. Trained as a cantor. Can you tell I love David Draiman?
I read this somewhere else too. My nurse brain is having a hard time just vibing with this performance because he LOOKS like he has the flu. 😂😬 Poor dude. But what a performer.
Holy frick ! Thanks for telling me this.
sick with a flu?! You mean : down with the sickness! \m/
No girl, from you comment nothing says that you love David 😂
Love him too
The thing that impresses me the most about this cover is how absolutely intentional it is.
I love liking comments years later so I can remind people how much they love this.
Paul Simon met David at a party and told him that he liked his version and added it to his play list
He also put a link to it on his professional page.
That's so awesome
AT GORDON RAMSAY'S HOUSE TOO
... and promoted it
True
I’m classically trained cellist. He can turn that pure tonal depth on and off across his harmonic range! This is the perfect example of genre hiding absolute incredible raw pure talent! Just love him!
David is classically trained. He is also well educated. His writing is 🔥. If you read the lyrics to his songs, you'll see the religious references informed by his traditional Jewish upbringing.
@@Cathy16011
Not classically trained.
Trained as a Jewish Cantor.
Just as rigorous, but different training.
I could see how down with the sickness's abused and angry letter to an overbearing and abusive mother he was standing up to (literally, he does a spoken rant telling us that much...) .like money, snobby, reputation, perfection demanded maybe made his take piano and voice lessons as a kid ..and his rebellion and hate led his to rock and releasing the demons she caused.. as a rocker, it's obvious he can sing.. but he SANG.. been hiding his full greatness prolly steamed from fear of failure or hatred for conforming to the competitive and misguided greed and societal hierarchy that pretends perfection, judges others as beneth them and often hide such horrible secrets that destroy their children
.... obviously this is pure speculation based on what he openly shared in the very beginning of their music and success in disturbed... but I bet hes got classical training as a child.. it would tie together his rock ability with the vocal ability he just showed effortlessly here.
Now that's the highest of compliments.
i am one of those men that gets watery eyes of disturbeds own sos! that man is so damn skilled
This is a bastardization of several very popular youtube comments strung together to sound like something that happened.
thanks for saying this. the original has waaaaaay more "gravitas" that he should really experience, now. and thank you for sharing what paul said..it is exactly the feeling.
Aw. Hellz. Yeah.
David, the lead singer of Disturbed was classically trained.
Yep, was about to say the same thing 😊
He isn’t classically trained. He trained to be a Cantor, big difference!
@@harleybicknell9375 quote: Before David Draiman became famous as the singer of the heavy metal band Disturbed, he trained to be a cantor. ... So both. Either way it shows he had vocal training prior to being in a band.
@@RavenAnima certainly trained but he’s been quoted himself as saying he isn’t trained classically. Just a rumour. Absolutely.
I too heard this song the night it was performed on Conan -- I cried so hard as I was so moved by this version- always loved the S&G original version having heard it hundreds of times- but had I been standing- I would have fell to my knees in my weeping over David's presentation - and the orchestra was an excellent addition
Not only that, to me it reminds me how a song can have more meaning/different meaning as you mature and time passes.
Soooooo true!!!!!
Disturbed knocks this one out of the park . Loved S & G's but the way he builds up in intensity blows me away. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT. 😍🤩🥳
Don't feel a traitor, Paul Simon likes it too.
"In April 2016, Paul Simon endorsed the cover. Additionally, on April 1, Simon sent Draiman an email praising Disturbed's performance of the rendition on American talk show Conan. @@iplaywithrocksforfun Take it with a grain of salt since it's just something I read somewhere. But supposedly David was pissed off with this particular performance since production decided to add that without him wanting it.
They are, and always have been, amazing
One part of this live performance that I think is so cool is how the audience waits, silent, until the song’s completely finished. Then they ERUPT!!
It was on TV. They had a prompt.
Audiences are told to be silent during the musical performances. Obviously they don't always listen but they usually are compliant
Can we appreciate David's style for this performance? Pitch black slacks, matching button-down shirt, and the floor-length black coat? That man has style.
Apparently he had the flu during this performance.

I enjoy that you literally watch him fall in love with the song. His facial expressions absolutely soften and he just loses himself to it.
I firmly believe that David’s voice has magical healing powers.
He is a voice of GOD
I've said the same thing myself, it's cool that he's starting to get the recognition he so richly deserves, carry on!

I've known of Disturbed but never heard anything by them until this song. No other words to say except WOW. Talented guy right there.
David draiman studied for years to be a cantor, so he didn’t just open his mouth a d gold came out. He worked hard. He’s a really intelligent and very well-rounded musician/vocalist.

So well stated. I had such a hard time realizing this vocal coach had no idea or background on David Draiman. So sad
No shit!
Garfunkel never sent any such thing, what are you talking about?
Best voice ever
Just to add: David was trained as a hazzan/cantor in his jewish church, which explains why he masters this "not-metal" side of his voice.
Underrated? He’s in one of the most successful metal bands on the planet. If he’s underrated I’d love to know what you quantify as overrated

I really love it when people come to the realization that hard rock/metal singers have more depth in their voices than they are ever given credit for and when they cover an iconic song, they usually take it to a much higher level than the original.
People think of metal as just screaming but it's not. It takes a lot power and vocal strength to do what singers like David Draiman do.

@@BIGSMOKE-bl2lq What did they cover?
A shame that they then do not perform arts that show off that depth.
@@mortenbork6249 They do.
“Amazing”
David comes from an orthodox Jewish family and was classically trained. His voice is totally unique.
And one of the absolute best voices ever!
This is the ONLY remake I LOVE MORE than the original! Played this for my parents (in their 70's) and they were blown away and my mom even teared up!
Have you heard Eva Cassidy sing Fields of Gold? Sting said she owns it now.
Nirvana “the man who sold the world”
Same
Being a NIN fan, I have to say Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" is better than the original.
@@nichi403 I've heard that too. I haven't heard the full version of the original. I need to do that!
@@joannajohnson8210 Also the Pentatonix version too. So many good versions of this classic song. But I will always watch some Peter Hollens too!
I can recommend another cover of a different song. That would be, Nightwish - High Hopes. I never thought I could recommend a "cover" of Pink Floyd. Nightwish never considered it a cover, but rather a tribute.
@@horseshoe_nc I will never be closed minded about covers ever again :)
Why do I like your reaction videos more than any others on RUclips? Probably because you are real. You are genuine. Thank you for that.
Nah, they are overwrought, naff rubbish.
This song sounds like a send up from South Park.
@@tigerpjm what makes you say that?
@@amylicht4818
The fact that is sounds like a send up song from South Park mainly.
@@amylicht4818
Sorry to hurt your feelings Karen.
Subjectivity is a bitch!
@@amylicht4818
I know Karen, foreign languages, especially English, are hard for Americans aren't they?
So, story goes David had a cold for this performance. His "team" applied an autotune to part of this performance that he didn't know about. He was pissed. This dude has an amazing voice.
Check out live concert ruclips.net/video/RS7hfwXpS5s/видео.html. No autotune on this one. Just as amazing!
It was the Conan team, not his.
from what i heard is that they told him right before the performance. He got pissed and said no, he was going to do it without any help
Thing is David is a trained Cantor he didn't need the help.
He was also going deaf
That is my absolutely favourite version. It blows me away every time I hear it
The S & G original makes me think. The Disturbed cover makes me feel.
That's exactly 💯 % ✅right!!!
@@kathrynadair7575 Thanks 😎

Thinking or feeling what is the best ? That's the question
Feel sick.
Mine, too. The original was cheerfully manic, this was more.. the future is here and the future is very, veery sick of everyone's shit.
He made it his.
Mine too!!😀
Garfunkel actually reaches out to David after this and said 'its your song now'
Mine, too. I can't listen to Simon and Garfunkel's version anymore because it's too "happy." Disturbed put a dark, mysterious and prophetic vibe to it that I love.
I love watching the micro expressions on your face when you're showing appreciation.
My son had the same reaction to space grass by clutch.
My daughter too
I got the chills as well
Disturbed's version of this song sends shivers down my spine every single time I hear it. So beautiful and powerful; the song's message comes across loud and clear.
Your reaction brought me so much joy. It’s beautiful to see the raw reaction right along with song. Pure joy. Thank you. 😊
Paul Simon endorsed this song and performance as one of the best covers ever.
David is a classically trained opera artist. Who, just happens to be a world wide famous rock star.
He never sung opera though! That's what I love!
He was a Cantor.
Uh...no...he was trained as a cantor. But you're close. 👀
@@kimberleymcmahan3863 you beat me to it!
He is??? Wow I didn't know that, never looked into Disturbed more than learning that he's named Dave, but this performance really shows it. Incredible vocal extension
I seem to realize I’m holding my breath the last 30 seconds of this song whenever I hear this version. It’s simply transformative.
Exactly how I feel! 🥲❤️
I feel the same way .
They do sound the same live, I've seen them twice now.
This version is sooooo much better than the recorded one. Take a listen again. Listen closely. Chills...
This is true I've seen David Draiman several time's live. Over dozen at minimum the man voice is iconic. Him and Serj Tankian did a song together simply amazing.
It is like 5 different people with different voices sing a verse each of this song. Amazing.
