You might want to react to High Hopes by Nightwish, from End of an Era (preferably the live version, as always with Nighwish: ruclips.net/video/4oEDnVeYYyM/видео.html). If you dont know: The original is by Pink Floyd, The Division Bell Album (1994), written by David Gilmour and his wife Polly Samson (if I remember correctly).
Other than that you could react to Johnny Cash - Hurt (although you might already know this), Original by Nine Inch Nails - on The Downward Spiral (also 1994!), written by Trent Reznor.

In 1975, when I was 5 years old, when no one else was home, my dad and I used to lay in the living room floor, beneath all the speakers (yes, a good sound system in the 70's). This was one of my father's favorite songs, we listen to Simon and Garfunkel over and over. So, the song has a lot of sentimental value for me.
When I first heard this cover, I was driving my daughter to her first day of high school, she looked over and asked me why I was crying. I told her the story and I told her how much I missed my father and wish that I could have shared it with him, in this world.
we played the song a second time, she cried, too.

He was just as P*ssed off about that one moment of auto tune. He is a perfectionist that does NOT want mechanical help with his voice and the production staff made the choice because he had a cold while singing this. He didn't need it, and having one off or flat note would ahve been preferable to that jarring autotune moment.
Disturbed went into the studio and did a recording track of this without auto tune and with rehearsal to go fully in their own style. Its worth a listen to if not a react.

There's a ton of metal music out there that has clean vocals (meaning sung as opposed to growled or screamed etc.) and slow tempos, relaxing tones, etc. (Porcupine Tree comes to mind), and plenty of the faster "heavier" stuff has clean vocals and is less aggressive to the ear than plenty of everyday rock. I love that you not only identified the auto-tune but flatly dismissed it as unneeded. David was livid when he discovered they used auto-tune on his voice. He was ill, like feverish, sweats, chills, SICK; plus he gets stage fright because he's so critical of his own work. In an interview he said he's gotten comfortable playing arenas and the like, but when a red light goes on a camera he shuts down; so the whole day leading up he wouldn't let anyone near him as he attempted to psych himself up for this performance. Also, look closer, he's not standing, he's on that bar stool which means he's delivering all that range and volume while SEATED. I need to find the source on this again so forgive me but I'm paraphrasing from memory, but after that performance he and Paul Simon spoke and Paul said it was the most beautiful performance of his song that he had ever heard; it belonged to him now. Paul further saw fit to share their video on his own social media pages and endorse the cover publicly. It has been said that if you consider the performance by Simon and Garfunkel as a warning that needs to be heeded, this version is the anger and disappointment in realizing that it hasn't been heeded. Disturbed's music video of this song also contains powerful imagery to go along with the lyrics, in my opinion the video could almost be watched on mute and still bring the view to tears.

FALSE. Paul Simon shared it on his social media but HE DID NOT tell Disturbed it's their song now. This is a MYTH circulating RUclips, regurgitated by people who don't know how to Google. These people are conflating this song with 'Hurt' in which the original singer DID tell Johnny Cash that it's his song now.

This version is how this song should be sung. The message uncovers the deep sadness of humans not communicating anymore. We speak and text and don’t listen or care. We send words at each other to shut each other down. We cut off any words that don’t agree with our personal truths. This song warns us, again, that not communicating face to face is a cancer on our society. Heed the warning or reap the consequences - isolation, ignorance, hatred, war. The same happened in the 60’s when this was written and sung by S&G. Please listen.

Julia, your reaction to this cover is exactly the same reaction I had. To give you an idea of my connection to this song, I can remember when Simon and Garfunkel released this song. Yes, I’m a 70 year old man and I heard Disturbed’s cover, for the first time, just 6 days ago.
Many, many people have reacted to this cover ... yours is the best I have seen. You didn’t keep stopping, picking it apart. You reacted.
Kudos to Disturbed and David’s presentation of Sound of Silence. This cover captures the essence and message of the lyrics. The original version was a “Nice” song created and sung in the era of “folk music”. This cover, to me, is a dramatic moving rebirth of a classic song. If I had to compare David this to another artist, I would put him with Neil Diamond.
I cannot stop playing and listening to this cover by Disturbed and watching your reaction.
I know this is a very long post, but I wanted to share my reaction and history to this song and to thank you for your beautiful reaction.
    Thank you, Julia!!!

As I've been getting older, I find myself feeling really quite emotional when listening to music, ecpecially certain songs by certain artists (frankly, usually those in my or my children's generation). Sometimes it gets a bit difficult to listen to certain songs by the Traveling Wilburys because I cry when I hear Roy sing "I'm so tired of being lonely" (my eyes are wet just typing this because I hear it in my mind) or when George or Tom take a lead singing line in any of their songs. Three of my lifelong favorite artists in probably the one band that is truly deserving of being called a "supergroup" are now gone. The reason they were deserving of that moniker was that their dedication to their friendship was the most important reason they recorded music together. To share their friendship's love of music by writing and playing/singing songs together and sharing them with the world for those of us who loved to hear their music.
David and his band, Disturbed, have shared a lot through their own music, and for me, their "interpretation" of a Paul Simon & Art Garfunkle masterpiece has changed the emotional impact of that song from being at the edge of what once looked like a deep dark forest to being on a journey down in a dark, dank, dirty mine tunnel and coming to a juncture facing a choice between three tunnels, not knowing which one leads to the way out. As you make a choice and continue down one of the paths, you find it only gets a bit darker no matter which "path" you take.

The timing of when this was originally released. ANYONE attempting to put a new spin on this seemed pure folly!!! This stood alone, and still does. Yet now Disturbed has taken a masterpiece, and actually, dare I say it, kicked it up a notch! I chose those words purposely. I can not accept the concept that anyone could actually improve on the original. Through this interpretation, Disturbed grabs the listener by the collar, and shouts the message in your face, unapologetically! Delivery sometimes out ranks originality. And some messages are timeless. Great reaction!
