I’ve seen Disturbed live twice since they released this and as emotional as it makes me on video when you’re stood in a crowd stunned into silence when he sings this it’s a completely different experience
The initial warning was ignored by the original version and now Disturbed redo a haunted enraged lament of that ignoring , with David goes to baritone low register for starting singing not in the middle register of the original one . The intetion building orchestration is a jewel . Great job guys . A grand piano , 2 guitars , Timpani , cymbals and tubular bells , and string ensemble ... David Draiman take you to a haunted journey !
It should be noted that Paul Simon himself came out and said this rendition is phenomenal. When the original comes out and gives you props, you're good.

I don't think it's physically possible not to have some sort of emotional response to this version of this song. It's so guttural. It's so angry. And it's so emotionally charged
I agree, but it actually starts out sad for the first part, semi-optimistic when his pitch goes up for a refrain (and the lyrics reflect trying to help people see the problem) and ending at the point where the lyrics go "hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you", and angry when he gets to the lyric about his words falling like silent raindrops (no one listening/on deaf ears), and then gets even angrier in the next lines when speaking of people praying to the neon gods they made. The lyrics are actually setup in an interesting way where it should sound like this. It is actually quite strange that Simon and Garfunkel had such a consistent, even keel high pitch voice through the whole song.
In 1966, the divisions were a quiet thunder on the horizon. Now, 2023, we are under more extreme stress of falling apart as a nation. The differences are as Beth said. I read this rendition as regret that we are at war, but it is time to fight for dialog, as well as guarding our own safety and rights.

He once claimed he wrote it in one day but Art Garfunkel says the lyrics were developed over a three month period. You are right though, because when Paul was recently asked about the meaning of the song he answered, "I have no idea." 😂 In contrast, Art Garfunkel, once summarized the meaning of the song, as "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other." This is probably what most people go by. Personally, I think that you can interpret it anyway you want since it is so ambiguous. 😁

I bet it's way more common than you'd think, just not commonly talked about on your age range, and the fact that now you can hear it pretty much whenever you want makes you experience it more often than what you have grown up to expect. The song that hits me like a ton of bricks it's called "Con la frente marchita" (With [a, or my] withered forehead) as sang by Adriana Varela and a line goes, roughly translated by me, like "There's no worst longing than to miss what never happened". If you have lost a young one, the tone it self, and if you speak Spanish the lyrics, will bring to you all that never was, but could, and is indeed a strange and strong longing.

His voice and emotion he gives out, hits you right in the stomach, like your stomach has got a big knot in it. He sings this as though it was written directly for him. One powerful voice and performance.

Dave Draiman is a classically trained vocalist. It took him three hours in the sound booth to come up with a vocal progression that he liked. He heard it the next day and teared up because he knew he nailed it.
@@alexboehm7171 autotune does pitch correction. It doesn't do breath control, decide when and how to use chest or head voice, vocal fry, volume control, etc. Draiman is a better singer on his worst day than 95% of the singers recording today.

For years I thought only Simon and Garfunkel could sing this song. But... I was proved wrong when this version came out by Disturbed. This version actually made me cry. Such power behind the lyrics.
I can't count how many times I've listened to this song, but I think what I love about it the most is the fact that they slowed it down. Mr. Draiman's tone combines with beautiful instrumentation to give this cover a reverence and a feeling of power and urgency that no other rendition has.
I was at my parents house after my mom died at age 74.. she was a bit of a musical hippy / she loved all music.. my dad had her ipod on shuffle that weekend.. when this song came on that weekend ..that was the first time since she had died earlier in the week that I cried over her death.. such a powerful song

Dave Draiman is a vocal wizard. I didn't really fully respect his vocal range until I heard the song "Darkness" off of Disturbed's 2nd album "Believe."
Disturbed ia my favorite band, but i have to disagree, first i think david is little softer live, thats not a bad thing, but after his surgery for his acid reflux started damaging his voice, he is very soft in the distortion. Second, i think that kinda adds to the charm, they are good enough live, but not perfect to the point, they add a little new component to the mix, and you can see they respect each other a lot in stage, david always makes the croud cheer while dan plays a solo. So, my point is that, they are not the same live, they are similar enough to make it good, but simpler enough to make it fresh. As an addition, if you dont mind heavier music, listen to gojira live, they are by far the best live performers i know.

@@TwiStedTentom I actually prefer my over the ears headphones for good full range listening. I have a pair of Superlux HD668Bs that are semi open backed, and do your standard low end very well. I love my ear buds for isolation and very loud listening, but there just isn't enough room in the ear canal for those low, full notes to bloom and resonate.

I've watched a few other vocal coaches review this song by Disturbed as well. And they all gave him high kudo's for his range, power & ability as you said. To hit notes, go up and down, without straining or damaging his vocal cords.

First time I heard Disturbed's version of this song I cried. Every time I hear it I get goosebumps. We did the original in music class in high school and this just blows me away.
It isn't unusual to get a frisson response from a good piece of music. However, so far this is the ONLY one of which I am aware to just cause me to have wave after wave of goosebumps. Absolutely perfect.

I'm not sure it is 'angry', I feel it is more haunting and sad, albeit, David has a great ability to gravel his voice to project emotion.

The Simon and Garfunkel version is pleasant but this version gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes.

That explains it. His voice cracked at 5:30 and seemed to strain at the slightly hight pitched parts.

This is one of those songs that always make me sweat a bit around my eyes...
Makes my hair stand up everytime I hear it.. even 5 times in a row still get the shivers... That performance is magnificent
I always listen to this rendition of Disturbed and i always get chills... so i understand how you feel... it just has that heavy hit on the feels
at least she didnt try to lie and say shes never heard the cover before - so many of these *reactors* lie about never hearing or seeing the cover or the original = all in the name of views
99% of them say they have never even heard of disturbed... I mean come on...

David has such an amazing range. We saw them live last month, and I swear they're better live than recorded!
David Draiman has the most godlike vocals i’ve ever heard.
But not now... His voice is... Awful
THANK YOU for finally being adequately impressed when Draiman sings "To the neon god they made." I can now close the rest of my tabs of vocal teachers being confused by Draiman and go back to procrastinating in peace.
The Charismatic Voice reaction is well worth a watch. One of those reactions where even when she wasn't speaking you could tell exactly what she thought of the song!
If you like this song, do yourself a favor and listen to it very LOUD, on a high quality system that has good bass tones. His amazing voice, with those huge kettledrums will blow you away!

@@TwiStedTentom I actually prefer my over the ears headphones for good full range listening. I have a pair of Superlux HD668Bs that are semi open backed, and do your standard low end very well. I love my ear buds for isolation and very loud listening, but there just isn't enough room in the ear canal for those low, full notes to bloom and resonate.

@@coolborder26 I may be half-Irish by blood, yet while I can do a passable imitation of the Irish brogue, I don't think I could speak in quite as melodious of a voice as most people native to the Emerald Isle.
That's not an Irish accent lads it's actually Scottish! Coming from an Irish man!
@@DonCarlos393 Good point. I get them mixed on occasion and I feel she has a fairly light accent for a Scott so i didnt pick it up.
Wasn't trying to be an ass to the first guy, was genuinely curious because most Americans only know the cringeworthy Irish accents in movies (this back when i mistakenly thought she had an Irish accent 😉 )

This vocal not only gave me goosebumps bumps but brought a tear to my eye..... a tremendous vocal to a great song 👍
Paul Simon actually said that Draimon brought something new to that song and improved on the original version.
I've watched a few other vocal coaches review this song by Disturbed as well. And they all gave him high kudo's for his range, power & ability as you said. To hit notes, go up and down, without straining or damaging his vocal cords.
"Music is subjective"...except in the case of this cover. Then it's universal.

Devil Reject there are a lot of classically trained rock singers. Look up Lacuna Coil. Trained opera singer.

It's just not what we expect from a metal singer. But he absolutely kills this song, powerful the amount of emotion he brings out.

David's voice is amazing. So warm & welcoming. He has a darn wide range. Plus this song is vintage and near perfect... EPIC!!! How can someone listen to this and not be moved??? I cannot answer that one! This is SO special. Plus the arrangement for the strings is wonderful.
First time I heard Disturbed's version of this song I cried. Every time I hear it I get goosebumps. We did the original in music class in high school and this just blows me away.

It isn't unusual to get a frisson response from a good piece of music. However, so far this is the ONLY one of which I am aware to just cause me to have wave after wave of goosebumps. Absolutely perfect.
