@@MyVenom1776 He trained as a cantor, but he never finished that training. As you said, he prefered singing rock/metal. You are also correct that opera is not a singing style, it's a performance type. Despite what David says, being trained as a cantor, even at his grand-dad's level, is NOT strictly Classical. It's specifically for singing prayers in synagogue. It can be very beautiful, but not truly 'classical'. (It actually, per-dates 'classical'.)
I don't know if that 'joke' exists also in English, I guess so, as it exists in French and German... I just kept thinking 'title' all the time. ^^ Way healthier than the dry one -> title !
This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon & Garfunkel sang to alarm us, he sang to give us a final warning. You should watch their music video version. It is as beautiful as it is haunting.
"his voice is very sad" Man, is that the most accurate thing I've ever heard out of all these reaction videos to this song. Knowing some of his life story, you can definitely feel it in the performance. For anyone interested; he's got great songs besides this one, including more covers such as Land of Confusion (Genesis), & I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (U2) Don't judge a book by it's cover, and don't judge band by their genre.
David Draiman is a classically trained singer. I believe he was a Cantor. He worked in the sound booth for 3 hours to get the vocal arrangement just right. He was furious with Conan's production team when they applied some auto-tune to he voice in places.
I think what a lot of people don't realize or know is that many male and most especially female Metal singers are actually classically trained. Some female singers will actually sing in "operatic" type singing in their Metal bands. He has such control that it makes it easier for him to use those "wet fry" techniques she talks about. And that seriously cracked me up LOL. Yeah, just gotta go with it girl. Wet, dry, moist, lubricated, it's all gonna go to a dirty mind. 😁
I have seen multiple vocal coaches say the rasp was done correctly without damaging his voice, but you are the first to explain it in any kind of meaningful way like you did. Thank you.
David had either a cold or the flu when giving this performance on Conan's show. So, without his approval, the TV producers added some post production auto-tune in segments where they thought he strayed a bit. He was not happy to learn this after the fact! He was a very bad drug addict when he was 18 or so and almost perished from it. His great grandfather was the head cantor in the largest synagogue in Jerusalem during the 1930s, so David's voice is apparently inherited from him.
You are correct he had a cold they did do that and he was mad Dave is also classically trained so in this performance he was not at 100% but still nailed it he did not need the Auto-Tune adding to it
@@D.Bunker To be fair, you have to work with a lot of audio production and post-production in order to be able to hear auto tune. Being a vocal coach doesn't necessarily have you in a professional audio studio often enough to hear these things every time it is present. I only know about its presence in this song because of a particular review of it that I watched. It is only present in a few short passages.
@@ToddSauve Having been a 20 year fan of the band, it is very noticeable. I watched this performance the week it was uploaded to RUclips years ago, and I noticed it upon my second listen.
@@D.Bunker - Your comment is ridiculous. Vocals (believe it or not) have been around since LONG before Antares was conceived. Knowing vocals and teaching vocals has NOTHING to do with your secluded gold-chain word of "Music production". There are many classically trained acoustic guitarists that couldn't tell you the difference between a distortion versus an overdrive pedal, or a flange versus a phase. She heard the variations and there are singers that naturally, to some extent, have those qualities in their voices. She's a coach... Not a producer. You seem to enjoy the phrase **"Stop pretending to be a lawyer"** in every one of your own channel responses... My advice to you... Stop pretending to be a vocalist. Wake up.
He has good control of his voice because he has been classically trained vocally. This version is also the ONLY version that was approved by Paul Simon.
The reason - to me - why this cover hits everyone so deeply, is because it's how the song _really_ was meant to be sung. S & G's version was just a bit too happy? It just wasn't sad enough. Not angry enough. Davids version is literally the last version of this song well ever need. His vocal choices match the lyrics PERFECTLY and this is very rare. That's why I think everyone - the vocalists and non vocalists alike - are equally moved. You know it's right, even if you don't know why.
I also love how he was on TV and commanded the stage without any instruments to start off with, he also was sick during that performance, classically trained, It's clear today, It's why it has 135 million views! Bravo David as I tip my hat toward ya! I wish i was singer just to meet Katrinka, she got it going on! Much Love nyc
I liked where you mentioned his voice going from "sad" to "commanding & powerful" to convey a message. He sings each word as though the message is VITAL that we hear and comprehend it. Well done on your reaction/review. 👍
Nicely done, Your explanations make a lot of sense and are easy to understand for an inexperienced person like myself, and the human touch you added by not editing out your laughing at "wet" and "dry fry" made the video fun. You've got a new subscriber.
This is from the Conan O’Brian Show. David Draiman is a sound engineer and wouldn’t ask for nor want auto-tune added....... HOWEVER, on shows like these effects are added in POST-production, which is, apparently, the story here. Also, as far as being nasally, Draiman apparently had a bit of a head cold that night. There are live versions and the official video that was put out by Disturbed.
You should check out another metal singer called Floor Jansen. She sings with a band called Nightwish and is in my opinion one of the best singers in the world. She recently took part in a dutch programme called Beste Zangers where 6 of the best singers in the Netherland sing songs to each other that are either by or important to the person they are singing to. Floor Jansen sang Phantom of the Opera with dutch opera star Henk Poort and also a version of Lady GaGas song Shallow and did it far better than Lady GaGa did. Her band Nightwish is a Finnish band which has been around since 1996 and is the best symphonic metal band in the world and their symphonic content is contributed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Metro choir. A good one to start on with their content would be Ghost love score live at Wacken Germany 2013 where they headlined to an 82,000 people audience.
I really enjoyed this reaction and your comments. It was hilarious when you discovered that you were cornering yourself into a double entendre situation and trying to get out while still explaining just made it worse (better 🤣🤣). Love your sense of humor.

i love alot of well done covers but he really nailed this is such a way that moving forward people will know him over its origin production .... not many covers are this widely renown nor do they manage to evoke such emotion !
Davids sadness comes from being a heroin addict. His girlfriend introduced him to heroin and she later committed suicide. He trains with one of the best vocal coachs in the world. He has always trained in the way that keep his voice as pristine as possible. Davids voice is the best Ive ever heard.
@@Katriinka im no vocal coach but wet fry sounds like he keeps saliva in his throat as he sings as opposed to singing dry like how you would sing with a sore throat and you strain it. He sings as if he has a sore throat with the saliva moisture of a non sore throat so air hits the spit and not throat as he sings. Again im guessing.
I love how a vocal coach loves a genuinely talented singer like Mr Draiman. That man has so much talent. I'm glad she respects his talent. Thank you for your great breakdown.
I have been watching reaction videos to this song for the past 2 hours from vocal coaches and you have by far had the best understanding of what and how he is singing... from the clinched jaw to the *wet* thing in the throat that gives him the rasp without damaging the vocal cords... I started listening to Disturbed since 2003 and he has kept his voice, so all that you have said makes absolute sense. Thank you.
David once shared a story that happened when he was touring smaller circuits about a man that was front and center of the stage, the guy was all tatted up with a prominent swastika on his forehead. He tells of how this guy was pretty anti-Semitic and how after a couple shows of this guy being there same spot front and centre enjoying the music whether it was before or after I forget, he tells the guy “ You know I’m a Jew don’t you?” Same guy comes back to the next show with a totally different attitude. The power of music units! On another note. David is a classically trained singer as well.
Beautiful and haunting how he holds the consonants instead of the vowels. And, of course, the build up to the crescendo gives me chills every single time!
8:27 She fucking nailed this on the head with her summation. Hers is by far, the best, and most forward of all the reviews of this song I've seen thus far. Very well put.
In case you're planning more reactions, Nightwish is a definitely must see/hear/do.. Be sure it will be a long, surprising always awesome Nightwish journey including floorfasms :-) My personal suggestion for the some songs in order to give you a nice overview of some "styles" covered by Nightwish: -> Ghost Love Score (Wacken 2013): THE "traditional first song" to get into Nightwish. Floor is showing diferent capabilities and you can get a first understanding of Tuomas capability of songwriting. -> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast -> There are a couple of great songs from Wacken: Storytime, Song of Myself, Romanticide, Ever Dream, Last Ride of the Day, Ghostriver -> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look at the growls) -> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) and "The Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley - get to know the background of this song ahead) -> Then the new stuff with "Noise" (Video), „Shoemaker“, "Harvest (Lyric Video) ... Just my personal thoughts :-) One thing you can definitely be sure of: Every song is different, has some surprising transitions, is intense. And none of the songs you're going to discover will disappoint you.Floor is one of the most versatile singers from opera over pop and rock towards metal and growls. Greetings from Hannover in Germany
I'd loooove to see you react to Jinjer - Pisces (live session) and then watch another Jinjer video - Perrenial live at Wacken. I'd love to hear what you have to say about Tatiana's voice.
They are a great band from Ukraine and Tatiana's voice is incredible. I've seen them live and she is mesmerizing on stage too! I don't think it matters what you know going in - nobody is ready for Tatiana. :D
ok guys, I hear you! If I do Jinjer, which you completely intrigued me now haha, I will do them without research beforehand, I will look up the info after listening to them. Thank you for info! :)
@M 40 I was going to post on here suggesting Pisces (live session) before scrolling down and seeing this post thread. Jamie, Perrenial at Wacken is good, but so is Who Is Gonna Be The One live, the version released by Jinjer's label Napalm Records on their channel.
I knew that I wouldn't have to scroll very long to see this request, lol. Pisces is perfect for someone reacting & listening to Jinjer for the first time, but then you pretty much have to do at least one more song to truly see Tatiana's vocal capabilities. This young lady obviously knows her stuff, so I'll be looking forward to this one.
Katriinka, you're a very talented vocal coach and reviewer. I sincerely appreciate you choosing this song to review, but I have to be honest, i subbed just for your ability to laugh while trying to explain the wet voice thing! I've probably watched 20 React videos to this song, and you are the first to comment on how he sings the last notes clean. That is one of the notable things to me . He builds to anger, then finishes serene.
You know you've done well when you get Paul Simon telling you...you've done a better job with the song then I did. He brought this incredible song into an entire new generation. David Draiman is much more than just a heavy metal singer he's a true artist.
Hi Katriinka, nice reaction. Nightwish are a symphonic/metal band created in 1996 in Finland. They are the best in this type of music and they have the best female vocalist too. Yes! A "call to arms". I've always felt an energizing motivation from that part of the song but I could never put it in words. Thanks for vocalizing my thoughts
Fun fact: Early in his singing career w/ Disturbed (according to a documentary they did) he said he could feel his throat getting messed up after a night's performance, so he decided if this is going to be his career, he needed to get professional voice training. A good teacher makes all the difference in the world, as you well know.
Katriinka, I enjoy your critique. Watched 2 of your videos, this one and Man of Constant Sorrow. And now I subscribed. Also, your accent is adorable. Good job
I found his voice spoke volumes about the story he is trying to convey. Sadness slowly turns into Frustration, then that turns into Anger and that turns into Rage. All of that telling the story that he is sad that no one listened and his explanation escalated into rage that no one still bothers to listen. That the Warning went ignored and he is forced to Sigh "I told you so!" at the very end.
I loved watching your reaction! It was like hearing it again for the first time. Also, I think it is great to know that no matter your nationality or how you grew up, we are all little giggling schoolchildren when we hear the words wet, dry and moist in the same sentence. :)
He was somewhat ill during this performance. There is some Autotune in there, but that is due to the production, not the singer. There is another video, done in Houston (live), no autotune, and he is just fabulous then.
The one in Houston with Myles Kennedy is the best. This was written as a duet with S&G and its super cool to see Myles and David do it that way. Myles has a much higher tenor but is also very poweful and not overshadowed by David.
1. girl, your mind is wandering way below the vocal cords! 2. he shows every aspect of sadness in this song, he takes it from exhausted-sad to angry-sad to desperate-sad.
Interesting how David and Freddie Mercury have given what can arguably be said as a couple of the best live performances ever. And they were both sick with throat problems during those performances. Very interesting, I think.
To add to that, Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers had a cold when he gave that incredible performance of Unchained Melody on the Andy Williams Show.
He can sing Acapella and sound just as good, but with a band, he kicks ass! (In this clip, he was having health issues. But got the job done with excellence!)
Wow our of about 25 voice coaches that I’ve seen react to this song. You have been the best. I think you explanation of all the aspects of his performance. Thanks so much for your input!!

This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon & Garfunkel sang to alarm us, he sang to give us a final warning. You should watch their music video version. It is as beautiful as it is haunting.
"his voice is very sad"
Man, is that the most accurate thing I've ever heard out of all these reaction videos to this song. Knowing some of his life story, you can definitely feel it in the performance.
For anyone interested; he's got great songs besides this one, including more covers such as Land of Confusion (Genesis), & I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (U2)
Don't judge a book by it's cover, and don't judge band by their genre.
His Land of confusion is awesome.
Holy crap i havent heard of U2 in FOREVER
Don't forget Shout by Tears for Fears. That's a great cover by Disturbed as well.
Also the cover of Sting - If I Ever Lose my Faith in You
Hold on to the memories gets me every time as well!
Haha. That part had me fall in love with the girl. Lol. 1st time i ever see her on RUclips. Yeah shes a keeper. And with your comment. So are you. XD
@@dolphin082 Ditto!! with a capital "D" Hahaha!
I have seen multiple vocal coaches say the rasp was done correctly without damaging his voice, but you are the first to explain it in any kind of meaningful way like you did. Thank you.
Disturbed’s Official Music Video is even more powerful. The stark imagery combined with David’s vocals will take your breath away.
I prefer this live to the official
David had either a cold or the flu when giving this performance on Conan's show. So, without his approval, the TV producers added some post production auto-tune in segments where they thought he strayed a bit. He was not happy to learn this after the fact!
He was a very bad drug addict when he was 18 or so and almost perished from it. His great grandfather was the head cantor in the largest synagogue in Jerusalem during the 1930s, so David's voice is apparently inherited from him.
You are correct he had a cold they did do that and he was mad Dave is also classically trained so in this performance he was not at 100% but still nailed it he did not need the Auto-Tune adding to it
*NEW VIDEO TITLE: "Vocal Coach Doesn't Know Auto-tune When She Hears It" !!!*
This version is also the ONLY version that was approved by Paul Simon.
the fact that he was sick on this performance and doctors even said not to do it but he did and "Disturbed" everyone
David Draiman is actually a classically trained singer.
Also, fun fact: he had the flu while performing this.
Is he going to sound better or worse without flu? 😄
He was trained as a cantor by his father in their synagogue. His father and grandfather were cantors. I saw an interview with him.
@@peanutdaddy9350 The best description of David's voice is, "God asked David if he wanted the voice of an Angel, or a demon. David answered, "Yes."".
@@michaeljackson9564 Perfect!
There's not one time that I don't get chill's from this song he is singing.
Me too. And start to tear up
I'm good now after 900 times watching it xD
There are live versions and the official video that was put out by Disturbed.
oh damn this girl is adorable trying to explain the wet fry and why it is safer or healthier lmao. Love her.
thank you haha
I don't even understand the problem. Keep explaining things!
I think she's adorable also. I lost it. I was laughing so hard. Love her accent too.

@@babybalrog not only his vocal cords is moist at that point. :p
I second the motion!
Nightwish? I heard Nightwish. Is the army mobilizing to overrun another channel? Just say when!
I really enjoyed this reaction and your comments. It was hilarious when you discovered that you were cornering yourself into a double entendre situation and trying to get out while still explaining just made it worse (better 🤣🤣). Love your sense of humor.
thank you haha, I try my best to stay as natural as possible on my videos. :) I think you will love the video I will upload tomorrow. there were so many bloopers haha
i love alot of well done covers but he really nailed this is such a way that moving forward people will know him over its origin production .... not many covers are this widely renown nor do they manage to evoke such emotion !
I've had the honor of hearing this performed live twice and it is absolutely beautiful!!
Davids sadness comes from being a heroin addict. His girlfriend introduced him to heroin and she later committed suicide. He trains with one of the best vocal coachs in the world. He has always trained in the way that keep his voice as pristine as possible. Davids voice is the best Ive ever heard.
that is incredibly sad, he also looks like such a good man. Caring and empathic. My heart hurts for him.
@Katriinka I had the great opportunity to meet them they all are amazing human beings so kind and welcoming.
Did he get clean or still active? Heroin is definitely a life changer.
@@denissavgir2881 he's been clean for a very long time, those issues were very early on in his life.
That word you used “commanding” love it absolutely he is a powerful incredible singer.
I love how a vocal coach loves a genuinely talented singer like Mr Draiman. That man has so much talent. I'm glad she respects his talent. Thank you for your great breakdown.
He’s not using auto tune and when he did this performance he was very sick with the flu and still went on to perform
Thank you.
His grandfather was a Cantor and when he was younger he was being groomed to be one.
His voice wasn't the only thing moist during this video
😂😂😂😂
In Italy we say” he sings with his heart in his hand”
Vocal Coach: Just reacting. Trying to do my job.
David: I'm going to wreck you at 9:15
Beautiful and haunting how he holds the consonants instead of the vowels. And, of course, the build up to the crescendo gives me chills every single time!
That last “sound” never fails to send chills up and down my spine every time.
8:27 She fucking nailed this on the head with her summation. Hers is by far, the best, and most forward of all the reviews of this song I've seen thus far. Very well put.
Probably the best analysis I have seen on this cover. Well done Katriinka!
Omg I died laughing when you talked about the wet and dry fry techniques. Very moist.
In case you're planning more reactions, Nightwish is a definitely must see/hear/do..
Be sure it will be a long, surprising always awesome Nightwish journey including floorfasms :-)
My personal suggestion for the some songs in order to give you a nice overview of some "styles" covered by Nightwish:
-> Ghost Love Score (Wacken 2013): THE "traditional first song" to get into Nightwish. Floor is showing diferent capabilities and you can get a first understanding of Tuomas capability of songwriting.
-> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast
-> There are a couple of great songs from Wacken: Storytime, Song of Myself, Romanticide, Ever Dream, Last Ride of the Day, Ghostriver
-> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look at the growls)
-> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) and "The Poet and the Pendulum (Wembley - get to know the background of this song ahead)
-> Then the new stuff with "Noise" (Video), „Shoemaker“, "Harvest (Lyric Video) ...
Just my personal thoughts :-)
One thing you can definitely be sure of: Every song is different, has some surprising transitions, is intense. And none of the songs you're going to discover will disappoint you.Floor is one of the most versatile singers from opera over pop and rock towards metal and growls.
Greetings from Hannover in Germany
I'll second Ghost Love Score
I'd loooove to see you react to Jinjer - Pisces (live session) and then watch another Jinjer video - Perrenial live at Wacken. I'd love to hear what you have to say about Tatiana's voice.
That's what I was thinking to. :D
I''ve watched many other voice coaches and they're talented too but none had actual personality! Thanks and stay healthy!
Thank you so so so much. When I recorded my first video I was trying to be super professional and uptight, but after watching it I realised it wasnt really me at all. so I started to leave these little bits and pieces of my personality in my videos, and I am super hap´py you guys like it
I subscribed to your channel today and thank you for sharing this song. He has a remarkable voice. Your voice sounds pretty good too ❤👍
I've probably watched 20 React videos to this song, and you are the first to comment on how he sings the last notes clean. That is one of the notable things to me . He builds to anger, then finishes serene.
he was actually sick when he preformed this live which is even crazier
You know you've done well when you get Paul Simon telling you...you've done a better job with the song then I did. He brought this incredible song into an entire new generation. David Draiman is much more than just a heavy metal singer he's a true artist.
You should react to Nightwish " Ghost love score" live. Yo will'be delighted.
Hi Katriinka, nice reaction. Nightwish are a symphonic/metal band created in 1996 in Finland. They are the best in this type of music and they have the best female vocalist too. I have always enjoyed this song but when I heard Draiman's version of it I 'got it" he puts so much emotion and power into it. Still get chills listening to it. Great job Sir
When he gets into the last chorus, she is so charged... lyrical ooh baby is what she meant
He's had classical voice training since he was a child.

Yes! A "call to arms". I've always felt an energizing motivation from that part of the song but I could never put it in words. Thanks for vocalizing my thoughts
The Simon and Garfunkle version was a warning
The Disturbed version is anger that the warning was not heeded.
I clicked like when she starting laughing after she said "wet voice fry" lol
Fun fact: Early in his singing career w/ Disturbed (according to a documentary they did) he said he could feel his throat getting messed up after a night's performance, so he decided if this is going to be his career, he needed to get professional voice training.
A good teacher makes all the difference in the world, as you well know.
Katriinka, I enjoy your critique. Watched 2 of your videos, this one and Man of Constant Sorrow. And now I subscribed. Also, your accent is adorable. Good job
I love the way he goes from a vocal fry to clean singing so effortlessly.
I found his voice spoke volumes about the story he is trying to convey. Sadness slowly turns into Frustration, then that turns into Anger and that turns into Rage. All of that telling the story that he is sad that no one listened and his explanation escalated into rage that no one still bothers to listen. That the Warning went ignored and he is forced to Sigh "I told you so!" at the very end.
please try Nightwish - Ghost Love Score live at Wacken

He was somewhat ill during this performance. There is some Autotune in there, but that is due to the production, not the singer. There is another video, done in Houston (live), no autotune, and he is just fabulous then.
The one in Houston with Myles Kennedy is the best. This was written as a duet with S&G and its super cool to see Myles and David do it that way. Myles has a much higher tenor but is also very poweful and not overshadowed by David.

I've watched 3 reaction videos of this song in a row and cried every time, it is so beautiful and sad :) Great reaction!
1. girl, your mind is wandering way below the vocal cords!
2. he shows every aspect of sadness in this song, he takes it from exhausted-sad to angry-sad to desperate-sad.
