You'll get a female singer with the full metal angels & demons voice, complex rythms and chord choices, plus a moving song about wanting their home back - there's a war going on where three of the four members of the band grew up. It would help a lot to read the lyrics first as you'll find it hard to catch all of the words otherwise. It's a busy song and the video is amazing.
1) David was ill that night and had been losing his voice. 2) He had that power in his voice sitting down. 3) He never changed his distance from the mike. 4) His voice is so powerful they were not afraid the drums would overpower him. Instead, they put the drums next to him. David is a badass singer!
The fact that stupid people need these gorgeous lyrics shouted at them for them to get the poetry of them, that is what's sad and ironically that's partly what the lyrics are about.
David Draiman is a classically-trained cantor who decided to pursue heavy-metal as his vehicle and won the respect/admiration of Paul Simon for his performance of this song.
Not many people know that D.D. was ill during this performance; that's right, he wasn't 100% for Conan. But he felt it was important to do the show........ and still nailed it !!!
This version is really a journey. David starts off soft and low, like he's sad. And, then, he's clearly very angry. It really tells the story of, being sad that humans aren't connecting on a personal level anymore, and then being pissed off that nothing has changed. And I think Disturbed's version helps you grasp the story more than Simon and Garfunkel's.
It does help you grasp the story more I think. Not to take away from the original though. That's a beautiful version, but I see your point. You can't help but listen to the last half of that and not choke up, unless you have no soul what so ever. I believe Paul Simon complimented them on this performance specifically. It is not anger but a righteous wrath and rage. The range of Disturbed's version goes from haunting, seeing/feeling, to rage, and finally acceptance. One reactor summed David's voice up perfectly; his voice is a choir, the whole choir.

i cannot escape the irony that silence is an appropriate response. In my instance followed by hollers, shouts, vigorous clapping and joyous laughter. Maybe that's me being me but I doubt I am alone.
I have watched a lot of reaction videos of the official video and the Conan O'Brian Show video. There have been two or three comments I have seen from people who were in the theater audience that night. Their comments were that the applause and standing ovation went on for about 10 or more minutes. I saw somewhere that this broadcast got the highest response of any other that they have had and with over 800 million views of Disturbed's play that is huge. I am 76 and after seeing the official video last year, I called my younger son, 42, to see what he thought of the video and group because I told him that I had never understood the song when Simon & Garfunkel first sang it but I do understand it after Disturbed's version.
@@inquisitorMence how many people point out that he's sitting through the whole performance - which negatively impacts one's range by restricting the diaphragm range and breathing?
This performance takes you on a journey. It starts so soft and so slow, it almost lulls you. As line after line progresses the tempo and the volume start to increase, as if he's wanting to make sure you're paying attention to the lyrics that were powerful when they were first written, and may be even more powerful in the world of today. The emotion in the final verse is revealed in David's trademark rasp, along with the continued crescendo of voice, music and those tympani drums. The song takes you higher and higher, and almost out of the blue, everything drops for the last line. I know that when I first heard this version, I felt like I was flying, to be gently returned to the ground with the final words. The performance left me with a spectrum of emotions that is still hard to explain. I just know I had heard something almost magical, and that I will forever be changed as a result.
I completely agree. I’m 64, the performance is powerfully moving. Took me back to the fear and angst of the 1960s. Music was the soundtrack, the Vietnam War was the backdrop to my childhood, day after day, year after year. Nightly news displayed numbers of dead from each side with corresponding flags. Like following baseball teams and their scores. With each day we grew one day closer to qualifying for the draft. Music provided hope. It countered the message from the government and our parents. In 1968 at age ten I asked my father, a West Point Graduate, if I was going to Vietnam when I grew up. He assured me “The War will be over long before then”. On March 29, 1973, the last U.S. military unit left Vietnam. The War continued until April 30, 1975. Disturbed’s cover gives the song the voice the lyrics deserve. Yes it is an incredible journey. “Haunting” perfectly describes this masterpiece. A tremendously powerful moving performance. Loved your realtime reaction. It’s taken 50?, 60? years for an artist to give “Sound of Silence” a voice equaling the lyrics. Stunning rendition appropriate for our World, our era. Yet possibly timeless. How many reactors could tell he was classically trained.? I love, love this reaction. It’s so far out of your normal music, and at first you just looked shocked but you got it. I love your emotions in this. Sympathetic and awestruck at the same time, wonderful.
As someone who has been classically trained, it's obvious that he was classically trained. He comes from a long line of Jewish Cantors, and was being trained to be one himself. He's brilliant, and a wonderful human being in real life.
I’ve lost count of how many time I’ve seen this, especially in reactions, but I still get chills EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Never know what point of the song they’ll hit though. Changes.
David Draiman comes from an orthodox Jewish family and was classically trained as a cantor. In my opinion, there is no other male vocalist alive whose voice compares with David's on this track. He gives quite simply, an amazing performance here. Sofie, your reaction to this song is exactly the same as mine and probably millions of others on first hearing, and when you see how many people have checked out the official video, you can see how popular this version is around the world. Last night I heard him sing this song on the radio for the first time. I had never heard of him before. I literally had to stop the car and just sit there and listen. It was as if he was speaking to my soul, bringing back all those times that I have found myself completely alone in a crowd of people, the many times I have turned my collar to the cold and damp. It is all there, tugging at my very soul. This is the way this song was meant to be sung, it waited for him to come along to bring it to life.

I believe he was trained operatically, this version of this song is so intense and and fits with the lyrics, so much better than the original, as stated by the writer of the song!
In his younger years, Draiman was classically trained as a cantor, who is someone that sings liturgical music and leads prayer in a synagogue. But after being expelled from three different yeshivas and blowing up his high school rabbi's van, Draiman wasn't cut out for the seminary.

If this song isn't played at my funeral Im not attending!.
Haha, brillant
Would be amazing if you reacted to Nightwish - Ghost love score live at wacken 2013 :D
as more of a segway into those, she could react to Henk Poorts Soudn of Silence which he sang for their vocalist.
This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon & Garfunkel sang to alarm us, he sang to give us a final warning. You should watch their music video version. It is as beautiful as it is haunting.
You should react to Nightwish - Ghost Love Score live at Wacken 2013....insane vocals, that's all i'm going to say
Just wrote the same thing. Scrolled down and saw another said the same! Lets hope Sofie reacts to it :D
2nd it.. time to start a Nightwish journey..
Simon and Garfunkel's version: a warning
Disturbed's version: a judgment
Gawd.......is there NOT a video of this song where somebody DOESNT write this comment to get their "likes"??????
@@SillyGoose2024 It's a common sentiment -- in this or some derivation -- among many people I know who've listened to both versions. Just sharing it. Don't be so cynical. Most folks aren't hunting for likes in the comments section of a yt video. ;)
@@kafkaOTS no...theyre hunting for appreciation from others like this is their creation. They stole the phrase from someone else and passing it off on another video hoping a new batch of people think they are soooo creative. They just stole it is all.
@@SillyGoose2024 no one cares. So shut up.
@@SillyGoose2024 nope
This is one of those moments that I always avoided watching because I was afraid I wouldn’t like it as much as disturbed studio version…what a mistake…Davids voice is even more powerful live. Incredible 💜💜
This is not a version you listen to, this is a version you feel into the core of your soul
The feeling the singer projects in this song is almost overwhelming.
No disrespect to Simon & Garfunkel. One of my lifelong favorite songs.
No worries, Paul Simon put it on his page.
react to their song Down with the Sickness...its a very touching and moving song...you will love it
lol. Actually I love the live version from 2008 Rock em ring.
lol
lol : )
@@deadlysquirrel5560 you sir are a bastard
@@Metalhammer1993 And you lady, are an idiot.
How many reactors could tell he was classically trained.? I love, love this reaction. It’s so far out of your normal music, and at first you just looked shocked but you got it. I love your emotions in this. Sympathetic and awestruck at the same time, wonderful.
Love the profile image, Dan! My favorite band and album 🙏
Thanks! I’m trying to show someone That Gilmour sings with his guitar. So Comfortably Numb is suitable for a vocalist to react to 😂😂
@@johnfry4501 He does!!! 🤣
Changes.
Me too!!!
He has been classical trained. He could sing the ABC's and make me cry
After watching you I think I just came up with a new word "soundgasmic", what do you think? 👍👍✌✌😘😘
Apparently, Paul Simon loves this version too, and that's a hell of a compliment.
David was trained as a Cantor. That is why he can fully use all the strength of his voice.
What's a Cantor?
@@fgwilli76, a Cantor is a person who sings the Torah during prayer in a Jewish service.
@@lyndacoppenbarger2221 yep - and you know what you are talking about.
@@fgwilli76 Watch the movie "The Jazz Singer", about a cantor who became a star. The story of Neil Diamond, acted by Neil Diamond. It's a brilliant movie.
Yes he is classically trained probably one of the best vocal performances EVER
I have never heard anything like this. This may go down in history as the best song ever.
hearing it again his voice is beautiful and haunting......................the piano stirs the soul........the bass drum pounding those two times is chilling and the orchestra is perfect background for this song
My sister said her first word while watching your video and she said Angel pointing at you
omfg, how wonderful .. I wished I could have seen that .. I agree btw
Wow - I say that every time I see her but - Bloody hell
You aren’t alone. Everyone gets tears at some point in David’s version of this song.
You absolutily nailed that. and Angel and a Demon in his voice perfectly said.. The band is Disturbed and thats what they did to you, they disturbed you... there soooo amazing, David Damian is a opera trained singer.. nice job..
I'm actually binge watching critics of this song. And yours is no different. Everyone is amazed, gets chills and has nothing but good to say. Not least because David was quite ill when he performed this. This song is single handedly the best out there x
I'm bingewatching too, and it's almost every time the same. Wide opened eyes, goosebumps and tears- and mostly speechlessness
Simon and Garfunkel tried to warn us.
Disturbed shows the anger at the warning going unheeded.
He was actually sick in this performance watch his music video when he was at his best and i think he was classical trained if i remember right
He was actually really sick during this performance. That's why he's sat on a stool. He wasn't confident he could get the whole song out standing.
He's trained as a Jewish Cantor and used to sing in synagogue.
The S&G version is a warning, full of hope and promise...
THIS version is the frustration and anger that the warning was ignored.
Sofie you look beautiful and loving the change you did with your Hair color looks Awesome. great job with your reaction and analysis of Disturbed cover of Sound of Silence .
Simon and Garfunkel gave the song heart and soul, Disturbed gave it, TRUTH.
This version of the song makes it's way into your very soul. I listen to this version when I need to cry enough tears to fully purge myself. David Draiman is incredible and has the voice of a fierce angel !!
If you really need to get the tear ducts going, try IZ`s version of Over the Rainbow.
For me?
You nailed it with just one word
HAUNTING
I am 70 years old
I should not understand a metal singer’s version
But I do
I love it
I can listen to this version forever.
I LOVE watching folks react to this song :) For me, this is such an amazingly powerful song that connects with my soul. I grew up with, and loved, the original, but this version!? It brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it... To see someone experience that for the first time is amazing :D
My friend is a classical /baroque opera singer and I love it, but the ability to vocalize frustration and anger (I feel) should not be dismissed. David's Heavy Metal background serves the lyric well here.
When god ask him.
God- david do you like angels voice or demons voice?
David - YES!
David's ability to change his voice constantly is what drew me to disturbed. It's showcased in disturbeds first album
To hell with the song.. Lady you are frickin gorgeous!!
David Draiman one of the great voices. Trained as a Cantor before heavy metal career.
If he had become a cantor, I would definitely go to shul more often
@@bschwartzberg , his grandfather was a cantor in the largest synagogue in Jerusalem. When David announced that he was going into rock music, his grandfather declared him to be dead to him. It was almost devastating to David, he was very close to his grandfather. His grandfather was hasidic. Fortunately, they reconciled before his grandfather passed.
@@shannonmccullough8324 Are you sure about that? I ask because the story you just told is identical to the plotline of a 1980 movie called The Jazz Singer! It starred Laurence Olivier and Neil Diamond in the role of the Cantor who wanted to pursue his music career in the Rock industry.
@@carlaharrington5120 , he said it in an interview. David has a law degree. His grandfather wanted him to be a lawyer.
@@shannonmccullough8324 I did Google him after leaving my comment. While I did see that his grandfather was a Hasidic Jew who survived the Holocaust, I couldn't find any reference to him being a Cantor. But if you heard David say that in an interview than that is fine by me! Like I said his story matches the plotline of a movie so perfectly I wanted to make sure David's version wasn't hearsay. Thanks for clearing it up.
The first time I heard this song was on a 9/11 video. I bawled like a baby. I watched it every year on Sept. 11th. I recently found these reaction videos and have watched them several times a day just to see their reactions. It's amazing they all agree, he's a stunning singer.
Everytime I listen to this song, I feel for the loss of innocence, the loss of society, and everything that we've cast aside over the last few decades. While we've made progress, we've lost our souls, we've lost our emotions, and we've lost each other. This song sends me down a dark hall knwoing that the hall is much longer before the light.
Loved your reaction. His voice is like a locomotive covered in honey
Brilliant 👍
When he was born, God asked. Do you want the voice of an angel or a demon? And he said yes!
No he said Wha ah ah ah ah!

After this performance, Paul Simon himself messaged David and said "It's your song now."
I can't imagine higher praise than that.
They did for this song what Johnny Cash did for Nine Inch Nail's "Hurt."
Not exactly what he said but it is the gist of it . He definitely gave him his Blessing.
He did not say it’s your song now. He said this version was great, and he loved it. Stop exaggerating.

I cannot listen to this performance without tears. Yet more evidence of both how amazing this man is, and what an amazing vehicle music is for emotion.
I read another comment on another page that God asked David Draiman whether he wanted the voice of an angel or demon and David answered...yes
The original was an angelic warning; this version is apocalyptic judgement!
S&G wrote an amazing song, but Disturb's version brings it to life.
