@@Malc180s He's heavily tuned live? Obviously you've never heard him sing acoustic with no mic, he sounds the same..... Dude's got an epic voice, that's the bottom line. Accept it...
@@IamthePodo I'm not going to accept a lie.. It's clear for all to hear. Of course it's tuned. And that's fine. Most music you listen to has an autotuned vocal - it makes sense. Rather than striving for the perfect performance, rhythm, feel, tone AND pitch, let the singer enjoy themselves, get a great vocal, and fix any pitchy-ness it in a fraction of the time.
He is phenomenal, he was classically trained which allows him to do a lot of his harder vocals in metal without injury. One of the greatest vocalists ever.
sandpiperr the song doesnt even get good until his “people writing songs”. it was just boring until that point then it started to become more powerful. he’s a good vocalist and great at using vocal frying and all. but with pentatonix the complex harmonies, and the bass line, and the fact that they DONT USE INSTRUMENTS makes it all the more powerful. yeah the orchestra he had with him sounded AMAZING but they sounded equally AMAZING without the orchestra 😂😂. anyways.. all in all, this version was better for “emotion” pentatonix’s was better vocally
It was said from another reactionary commentary within a post, and I quote, "Simon and Garfunkel's version was a warning. Disturbed's version is rage because the warning was ignored."
@Peter Lustig There's multiple aspects to singing. Maybe she has stage fright, maybe she doesn't want the fame, maybe she can't write songs, etc. I mean, an MMA coach may be a coach instead of a fighter because he's not great at fighting, or maybe it's because he doesn't want to get brain damage.
David Draiman has described himself as "sick as a dog" the night he performed this on Conan. 102° temperature and bronchitis to boot. David Draiman is a genuine baritone, with a massive vocal range, and was classically trained as a cantor in a synagogue when he was younger. I heard that they didn't even tell him they were going to use Auto-Tune, they just did it without his permission. He didn't find out until post, and he didn't even find out from them, he heard it in the track and confronted them with it. Man, was he ever pissed. From what I hear he hates Auto-Tune, 'cause he feels like it's cheating. You should go listen to the live concert version with Myles Kennedy.
It's unlikely he was unaware of the auto tune. These kinds of TV events are pretty meticulously coordinated ahead of time and all the specifics of the performance are designed. Most TV performances will not even allow for a completely live take. Too many things that can go wrong. As for how much he hates auto tune... well.. the studio recording of the song has auto tune clear as day on it, so...
@@WeissAdvice there's a difference between autotune and mastering. In this rendition the autotune was for a split second not really the whole song. Also he is on record being pissed about it.
If you listen close you can detect the corrections. But in two spots you can hear his voice crack because of the bronchitis. Amazing he was able to do this well as sick as he was. Listen to the official video and you'll hear his perfect multi-octive voice go from the basement to the roof without a fault. And without being tuned. Beautiful.
She never says once that he didn't know what he was doing. She was adding insight to people in general using rasp. She actually said he was doing a really good job. You retards are relentless on here..
I love how David's fans protect him because they love him and want no one to be left unclear about his voice and what a tremendous gift he has. That love of him touches me and I can understand that.
David Draiman is a classically trained singer and has an amazing sound and range. Disturbed is a phenomenal metal band. Really enjoyed your take on his performance. David was actually under the weather for this performance and yes the producers added autotune without him wanting it. He never uses it. He was irked.
It is such a pity when live performances are ruined by autotune... People do not understand that singing isn't flawless. Every video on youtube where singer is using extreme singing (belting, whistle, distortion...) and is perfect is heavily processed and either lipsynced or autotuned. There is just no way anybody can lay a perfect vocals on hard songs in 1 take. There is always gonna be some bad timing or flat/sharp note or vibrato flaw or something... Hiding these flaws puts unspeakable pressure on newcomers. I do not understand why these vocal coaches do not react only to unmiced performances of singers. Makes much more sense... Like these 2 for example: ruclips.net/video/5BPGmCClb-c/видео.html ruclips.net/video/uAjaGUdfsPA/видео.html

@@Dwendele I believe you. I do not not him that well. I was mostly talking about dudes like Dimash. This recording definitelly is not perfect, there is a live factor to it. I love it.
You can even see it in his face how irked he was on the auto tune at a couple of points. I’ve seen Disturbed live twice a long time ago and he’s always on point vocally. Never sounds bad
Ive watched a BTS on this song and I'm pretty sure he did it in one take for the album, he also said he usually gets most vocals for albums in 2-3 takes. Hes the man. Amazing singer that doesnt get as much credit as he deserves
99% people will know the song if you just play hello darkness my old friend it kinda pissed me off how she said I know this song when he sings the title of the song trigggerd
Nah. This song is older than most of the people commenting on this video. She's a youngster, consumed in her trade....voice, not song. Big difference. No problem with it.
Jasonomnia Because it’s obvious that he has “this rock quality to his voice” if you know absolutely anything about the band lol. That’s sort of the point.
David knows exactly what he is doing with the fry. He trained with a vocal coach. In fact he still trains with his vocal coach. David started his musical career as a Cantor like his famous great grandfather. Watching this incredible man do interviews is fascinating. He also champions the cause of mental health awareness. I adore him. Btw Disturbed is a heavy metal band.
David is not and never was, an opera singer. He was trained as a Cantor in a Jewish faith school. There are some parallels in the training, but they're completely different vocal styles.
Another vocal coach that did this caught that and she said it sounds like he might have a cold or something in his throat. How they can hear that is beyond me. Plus, he has had other throat issues in the past.
"There's a very fine line between vocal frying and shredding your vocal chords." Well, he's been doing in for 20+ years now. I'm guessing he's got it down to some degree.

In all honesty, when I was first told I had to go listen to their rendition of this song, knowing who Disturbed is, I was incredibly impressed and became an even bigger fan of Disturbed. I can see where the confusion came into play with Tara. I perform a lot of country music, but then I'll go into a few songs of Journey or Puddle Of Mud and I get extreme reactions.
Draiman's vocal coach Melissa Cross is arguably the best vocal coach in existence. Having listened to this live, coupled with the fact that he publicly denied using autotune. I for one will believe what the man said.
Some areas you can hear it are on the word "light" at 2:05 and "that voices" at 2:50. He's using autotune. Maybe it wasn't there in the live performance, but it's definitely there in the video.

I normally prefer the original artist of a specific song, but he does it very very well. No preference on either Style I would listen to Simon and Garfunkel's version and immediately listen to Disturbed's version.
Denver Watts that’s false. He was trained by his grandfather who was a great Cantor at his synagogue. David actually studied Jewish law and such before he was kicked out. But he does have an operatic quality to his voice so I can see where you may have thought he was opera trained. He definitely was sick during this performance and yes he still killed it cuz the show must go on right? He also has an issue where a repair done to his vocal chords has failed so no he essentially gets acid pouring into his vocal chords. He now changes how he eats and when and how he sleeps. But it has effected his range. He just works through it now to still achieve epicness
Mr Machine actually I watched an interview with loudwire on true and false facts about his life. And I’m a fan. Sorry you’re jealous I brought factual info to the comment section. You wanna contribute anything? No? That’s what I thought. Sad troll.

There is some post-processing but it is mainly done for consistency like the other guy said. If you took it away you would still hear his amazing voice and he would be on key and in tune.
I love Disturbed, but this clearly IS autotuned. a) You can clearly hear it b) A lot of experts pointed it out, not only Tara ruclips.net/video/Bt19Q1v0Wtg/видео.html c) David said it himself. J Flynn - Being in my teens in the late 70’s and 80’s I hadn’t come across a remake of a song from back then that was even close to being as good as the original. We are of course all biased to nostalgia.......until I heard this by Disturbed. His version, for me, is even better than Paul Simon’s original. Fantastic!
His name is David Draiman. I've known him personally for about 14yrs now. No, he doesn't use auto-tune. He and I have had many convos about music as I'm a drummer and singer in a metal band. He has a phenomenal voice. However, this particular show (against his initial protests) they did add a slight auto-tune to his voice. Apparently they do that with all the people who go on to make sure it's a totally clean and smooth performance. All his other shows and performances, it's all him. Dave has such a great range crazy voice control. Tara Simon is an absolutely amazing vocalist herself. I've seen many of her videos and such. All those freaking out and making rude and disrespectful comments need to grow up. She was pointing out what she heard and noticed. As is HER JOB! Read the name of the video genius's. She's a professional and the fact that she can catch those little things shows how good she really is so kudos for that. This was a good video and I'm now subscribing.
People that can't take constructive criticism are people that will continue to do things wrong until the end of time. There is always room for improvement. No matter what you do, sing, play an instrument, or build a car. It's the people that are always listening, learning and improving that will get to the top of whatever profession they are in.
This has always been a favorite song of mine. Was blown away at this cover. They hit the nail on the head. I could think of one or two more Simon amd garfunkel covers they would probably slay. Have a whole new respect for him after this. Really shows his range
@@taunks287 certainly didn't appear that way in this video when she acted surprised at realizing she knew the song. It's not a big deal because it's obvious she didn't seem to know Disturbed either...just thought it was funny.

@@jrlomy2k no, she's just giving her unbiased opinion and explaining what he does and why he does it without knowing him. I mean I never knew about disturbed until recently because I was looking for covers of this exact song.
If you listen to anything else by Disturbed you will definitely hear massive vocal fry and the power of his voice. This is probably one of the best covers of a song I've ever heard, and even though he is a singer of a metal band, his classical training easily comes through. Great reaction and insight.
He's a metal vocalist, if you haven't looked that already. That's why he's so good with the rasp/double tone in his voice. That's part of his schtick. He's honestly one of the most talented vocalists in the metal scene.
A lot of times people don't realise they know a song 'til it gets to the chorus - or until it gets to the part where it says the title, oftentimes that being the chorus.
@@madhatressadastra8267 Maybe its the age of the listener but the opening line, "Hello darkness, my old friend" gave it away for me. I really don't know how she does not recognize that first line.
Lmao rolling sorry but i was thinking that same thing is that wild man growl he has on alot of their earlier stuff disturbing lol its what made me like David as a vocalist
This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon & Garfunkel sang to alarm us, he sang to give us a final warning. You should watch their music video version. It is as beautiful as it is haunting.
I kind of agree, but this is not my favorite performance of this song.... for reasons, I think the official music video is a much better performance by a healthy David. my 2 cents.
@@stalinclips8456 There is some autotune in this instance, turned by mixing desk (without David's permission, which made him angry after the fact) due to him having flu and producers fearing it could affect the performance.

The last “...of silence...” always gives me the chills down my spine. His voice is powerful and this is one of the songs he sings that shows it the best, I believe (I’m a Disturbed fan so I know the rest of their work). About the reaction, I like it very much. It seemed really spontaneous and she seems like a talented professional.
If I remember correctly, David said, in an interview, that when his group first thought of doing Sound of Silence, he did not yet have the vocal skills to make it work. It was a few years later that they did the song.
I have witnessed Draiman sing this song live and it is quite an experience. Even their original writings, rather heavy, are epic. I was already a fan of Disturbed before I heard their version but when I did I was blown away. Amazing!
Ok, the people who are whining about her auto tune comment are completely over reacting. She's not knocking the guy at all. It just so happened that the producers of Conan actually did put it in for this performance. 97 to 98% is him. He doesn't use auto tune in his performances. The fact that she's able to recognize this and still give him all the credit shows, in one way, that she's a professional. From a critiqued point of view she have him an overwhelming praise.
The actual reason he's able to do the rasp and fry so well is because David tore his vocal cords when he was younger. A lot of their songs, especially Down With The Sickness, are VERY taxing on the throat and cords.
Cantor trained, and he was ill the night of the performance so the show producers turned on the auto tune, he didn’t need it though. It did kick in at least one during to performance.
Guys just because he's a great singer doesn't mean the mic or mix doesn't have pitch correction in it. The fact that he's an amazing singer is why you never hear it doing anything except in that one small moment. Let's not mistake her pointing that our for saying he need autotune to hit pitch.
The 'autotune' echo quality of his voice is because that is David Draiman. David Draiman has nodules on his vocal cords. Normally this leads to a very breathy, raspy sound to a person's speech, however in David's case it gives him his legendary "3-voice-voice". In order to bring all his vocal cords to full resonance and issue that 3-voice sound he had to bring his chin down close to his chest. He does this either by looking down as he enters a long vowel sound...or by looking forward with his mouth fully open and lower jaw slightly extended forward. I am not a voice coach or music major, I am a linguist that speaks 21 languages, however when I heard this man's voice many years ago I researched the "how and why" of it all. I didn't expect 15 year old research to be relevant today. Go figure.
Audio engineer here: I can't hear any autotune, but the voice has a delay effect on it. Not so notorious, but it's there. You could be thinking it was autotune because autotune is essentially just a combination of a lot of delays with different time syncs and decay, to giv the illusion that the singer is holding the note. A voice with delys will automatically seem a little more in tune, but just because you're listening to that note over and over, although at anincreasingly lower volume
This was asked in later interviews, David has stated that the studio engineer & their manager got into a "heated discussion" and the studio wouldnt let him perform without an auto tune mic, so yah, it was there.
Sergio Zamorano I don't know how you can't hear it. His voice has an artificial depth to it, and the tone is entirely too smooth. This doesn't diminish Dave's singing abilities, but yeah. This was extremely tuned.
@@djjazzyjeff1232 Why would he use autotune "like crazy" in the beginning when that is right in a comfort zone for him? He has an amazing range. Dismissing it as autotune is a natural response to hearing such a stunning performance. I'm not trying to be critical of your comment. Just wanted to give you my thoughts. Thanks for sharing yours.
@@guitaroffthecuff-davids5528 No I get it, no worries. It's because I've heard rumors that he had nothing to do with it and it was the Conan show that did it afterwords, so I don't think he had anything to do with it. He does have an amazing range and is capable of delivering the performance that's on the record, and he doesn't need the help, that's why I don't understand why they would stain his performance with it, and that's why it bothers me so much because they definitely did, just listen: Go on a journey with me if you will, here are some clips: (for the actual Conan video, not this video) 1:12 the whole line "'neath the halo of a streetlamp", 1:25, the whole thing, but worst on the word "neon", 1:45 the whole line, but mostly the word "light" the notes move too quickly for to be a real human voice, 2:09 the word "and" is the same as before, much too quickly and perfect for the human voice to achieve. 2:52 The word rain"drops", same as the last too. That one's REALLY blatant. 3:00 is closer to how the human voice actually reacts Those are just some examples. The whole thing is autotuned I suspect, but it's harder to tell after they word "prayed" when he goes to the distorted voice. That's why I say "the first part of this anyway" is definitely autotuned. Not to toot my own horn, but I've taken ear tests similar to an eye exam where you hear two tones back to back and have to decide which is the higher pitch, and I can detect it correctly at the smallest difference the machine is capable of producing 10 times in a row, at which point instead of saying your percentile of hearing ability, it basically just says, "You win" This next thing might sound idiotic to you but I promise it's true. If you still can't hear it, listen to it while you're a bit drunk. The human brain when you're drunk has a tough time reconciling things that are not real. For example, if you watch a movie when you're drunk, every scene that's green-screened or CGI will stick out like a sore thumb. Seriously, drink 3+ beers and watch Transformers or Game of Thrones, you'll be blown away with how ridiculous it looks. I suspect it's because your brain is slowed, so the instantaneousness and "perfectness" of a green screen feels unnatural. The exact same phenomenon happens with autotune.
LOL, it's ironic that you said that because this performance was autotuned. If you want to hear his real vocals he did the song live and unprocessed on Australian x factor.
@@Reactiv12 After 25 years, music becomes free use. Since Disturbed is making money on the song, they may be required to pay Simon a fair amount, IDK. However, when it's not for commercial use any one can use it without copyright issues or paying royalties.

This has so much power and emotion, which matches perfectly with the lyrics.
New title. “Vocal coach” realizes she’s listening to one of the top songs ever made sung by one of the greatest vocalists of all time and says “oh I know this song!” Facepalm
It's very possible she's never heard of Simon and Garfunkel, not everyone knows every song. BTW the actual song (originally sang in 1964) probably predates her birth I think, She doesn't look 45-50. I have watched a few reaction videos on this song/performance. Everyone gets some thumbs down... But this has more than some. The focus of what is on his chin is so irrelevant. And then suggesting that it may be autotuned as if she can't believe this metal guy actually sings that well. Of course if she did even the tiniest bit of research she would have learned he has had major vocal training.
@@slvrangel22 , that time he was using autotune, according to many sources. He didn't want to, but was sick that night and IIRC, producers with the show forced the issue. Her obsession with his chin was funny - again - coming from someone who didn't know who he was. I've watched reaction videos where all people did was bob their head and make faces. Her assessment was fascinating.
Hi everybody I will say and can back up what I'm about to say about David Draimans mic has never been auto-tuned until this performance. ok and ill tell you why he was pissed off after the show here is why. OK, So for the auto tune. Yes, it was there, but Dave told them not to add it, but since he was sick during this performance, Conan's people put it in without his permission. You can see how pissed he is when he realized it was there. he was very upset with Conan's people. and had made some comments about not preforming for them ever again because they didn't have his permission to do so... because he doesn't need no autotune in his mic that's for sure.. David has one of those voices that will raise the hair on the back of your neck and send chills down you spine.. he was blessed with a voice from god
Not sure if anyone said this but he is a classically trained Jewish Cantor and my belief is when God asked if he wanted the voice of an Angel or the Voice of a Demon David said, "YES!".
David Draiman as the voice of a dark God of sorrow and thunder... He's one of my favorite vocalists of all time and Disturbed is one of the best bands I've ever listened to
Try Blind Guardian, it'll change your mind. Same vocal balance between cleans and growls, and catchy choruses, but with better melodies, lyrics, technicality (and sometimes orchestra). They got me to a whole new level, and I never could come back to Nu Metal afterwards. This said, liking Disturbed shows some good musical tastes... waiting to fully awaken... \m/ ruclips.net/video/CFZ_Uyqbr4k/видео.html
Apparently when a band/singer performs on a show, like Conan’s, the decision to add auto-tune is made in post-production almost as a default ‘yes.’ The lead singer of Disturbed is, himself, a sound engineer and neither wants nor would want auto-tune added. If you listen to the video of Disturbed Live in Houston performing, you’ll hear a non-auto tune version.
It took a "vocal coach" nearly a minute to recognize a song written by Paul Simon? Are you kidding me? It's seriously one of the most iconic songs ever written. AND, Draiman doesn't use autotune.
Plus, he was put on it during this performance, and he didn’t know it. He had been sick all morning prior to this, and he felt he could do it without the autotune, but he was pissed they did that to him.
He was recovering from a flu and the producers of the show weren't sure he could perform properly so they turned it on as a safety measure without him knowing. From what I've heard he was actually furious about it afterwards.
Fun Fact: It actually was autotune because he was sick when he was singing this. It wasn't his choice but the producers forced it on him. But let's be honest, the autotune doesnt really matter when it's David Draiman, we all know he can do it for real
Yep sadly there is bit of autotune going on and apparently David was not happy with it because he specifically told them not too. Although you can hear autotune kick in on several instances, majority of it is solely David as he is quite capable. A great classically trained singer.
“Oh I know this song” At least now we know we’re listening to an expert “There’s a rock quality to his voice” I guess that makes sense considering he is the lead vocalist in a rock band

Source?
It's unlikely he was unaware of the auto tune. These kinds of TV events are pretty meticulously coordinated ahead of time and all the specifics of the performance are designed. Most TV performances will not even allow for a completely live take. Too many things that can go wrong.
As for how much he hates auto tune... well.. the studio recording of the song has auto tune clear as day on it, so...
@@WeissAdvice there's a difference between autotune and mastering. In this rendition the autotune was for a split second not really the whole song. Also he is on record being pissed about it.
I commend him for this performance due to how sick he was
If you listen close you can detect the corrections. But in two spots you can hear his voice crack because of the bronchitis. Amazing he was able to do this well as sick as he was. Listen to the official video and you'll hear his perfect multi-octive voice go from the basement to the roof without a fault. And without being tuned. Beautiful.

Clearly he does not need autotune, but the show did it anyway. It was not a choice by Draiman, but by the producers.

He had a cold for this performance.
And yeah he has to be a great singer already to sound that good with autotune.
rational conservative no autotune added but a slight delay was.
@@jaderose3175 I can hear a clear autotune artifact on "and" before "voices" at 2:50.
So where is the source that states Conan's producers definitely used auto tune? Just curious.
No, that’s his voice. Davids voice is absolutely amazing. They are a metal band.
Yeah and David was trained
He's a metal/rock artist, thats why you're hearing that rasp :3
The actual reason he's able to do the rasp and fry so well is because David tore his vocal cords when he was younger. A lot of their songs, especially Down With The Sickness, are VERY taxing on the throat and cords.
She went into that in quite some detail.

She’s trippin. Damien has an incredible voice, I can’t believe she had the audacity to say “auto tune”.
Cantor trained, and he was ill the night of the performance so the show producers turned on the auto tune, he didn’t need it though. It did kick in at least one during to performance.

@@roybokelman4215 Yeah, he was less than enthused when he found out they did that.

It's ok to be wrong. I'm a performing musician/audio engineer myself, and the first part of this anyway, is auto-tuned like crazy.
He does have an amazing range and is capable of delivering the performance that's on the record, and he doesn't need the help, that's why I don't understand why they would stain his performance with it, and that's why it bothers me so much because they definitely did, just listen:
Go on a journey with me if you will, here are some clips: (for the actual Conan video, not this video) 1:12 the whole line "'neath the halo of a streetlamp", 1:25, the whole thing, but worst on the word "neon", 1:45 the whole line, but mostly the word "light" the notes move too quickly for to be a real human voice, 2:09 the word "and" is the same as before, much too quickly and perfect for the human voice to achieve.
Not to toot my own horn, but I've taken ear tests similar to an eye exam where you hear two tones back to back and have to decide which is the higher pitch, and I can detect it correctly at the smallest difference the machine is capable of producing 10 times in a row, at which point instead of saying your percentile of hearing ability, it basically just says, "You win"
This next thing might sound idiotic to you but I promise it's true.
I would hope he has a rock voice. He's a heavy metal singer.

He is such a great singer. Usually I never like "metal covers" of classic folk-type songs.

What many people don't know, is David Draiman is a classically trained Jewish Cantor.
