This is the first time ive seen someone react to this. I was in the audience this day. It was amazing. Nobody was even making a sound. The moment he opened his mouth everyone just shut up and paid attention. And nobody made a sound until we all knew it was over. And i swear we all clapped for like 10 minutes
DEEPLY impressed that you picked up on his being sick during this performance just from his voice! I've watched a number of reaction videos on this cover, but you're the only one I've seen who could pick up on that just from watching and listening.
classically trained singers doing rock and metal is always just so good especially howard jones, i know killswitch did holy diver with their style instead of being a faithful cover which some people dont like, but i think its amazing his top 3 songs for clean vocals imo are the arms of sorrow, starting over, and break the silence
Things that kills me he's on TV has a great band but all this stupid comments listen to the dam song your in school and he's famous and all these dam vocal coachs video kill me that's why you have a RUclips channel and he tours the world
Interesting thing about this singer: he's from a family of cantors. Also, regarding your question about Draimen and the sickness... he's usually down with it.
David's voice is absolutely amazing but what struck me was the audience reaction - they ACTUALLY waited until the last note died to begin their applause. I like to think they were all blown away by the performance they had just witnessed and realized how lucky they were to have been there on that night.
Maybe. But the truth is because it's a TV show, the audience is told to be quite. There's actually signs that light up that say quite or applause. And the way they record the shows sound, it keeps the audience noise to a minimum.
You were right...he was very sick that night with the flu and had a 103 temperature. That is why they had him sitting for the performance. David rocks the soul in this song.
Paul Simon actually put the Disturbed official video of this song on his own page himself and entirely sanctions this version of it and also complimented him personally for how well he sang the song as a cover.
I really don’t think she’s a vocal coach! Oh, no. She respects the music too much. I’ve heard this reviewed by a vocal coach. Interrupted the hell out of it. In all the wrong places too. Just could not wait to critique everything the person was doing. She talked over it all the time. Oh God! It was horrible. This lady right here loves and respects the music so much she gets swept away by it. She appears to be one of those who belongs to the music rather than has the music belong to her. She really feels it. There is no cold critiquing here. It makes a huge difference.
He is a classically trained singer, and yes, he had the flu while performing this version of the track. This track was also fully endorsed by Simon and Garfunkel and is apparently their favourite version of their track.
@@maggiereneemusic - i knew this was going to be here. someone ALWAYS post this in any reactions to this video and spreads the notion that he is classically trained. He is NOT. He was, however, trained as a cantor as a young child (his grandfather or father, I can't recall, was a cantor at temple). He did take some lessons to help him master his vocal distortion technique. Most of it is his natural talent with some guidance along the way :-)
Yeah, except he also used live auto-tune - which is a thing. It's (sadly) awkwardly recognizable for those of us who have worked with the stuff. Eddie Vedder had a chest cold when he did his live version of Black on MTV Unplugged and didn't need that kind of help. This is one of the fleece performances of all-time that duped tens of millions into thinking it was something special or historic in music. Just digital magic, every time he held a note for any length of time, or transitioned from one tone type to another, or did a climb. The climbs are embarrassingly obvious when it sounds like his voice was pushed through Mario Paint. We have seen Frankie Valli use it in recent years, but he's in his 80's. That doesn't mean David hasn't had classical training, or a great vocal coach; he can afford all of that stuff. But he can also afford to use great technology, which he did.
As an old man, I have been listening to music for many many years, and every now and then someone comes along and pokes the music industrie with a shit covered stick and says " hey listen to this." Takes a song not within their usual genre and drizzles it with their genius and tallent and BOOM, instant classic. This song is amazing in of itself, I have always loved Simon an Garfunkles original version, but this transends theirs and becomes my ultimate favourite. David sings it in such a way as to spear through my chest and impale my heart, I love it.
Best description I think I've heard of this arrangement: Simon and Garfunkel's original was a warning that we are talking at each other, no one is listening. Disturbed's version is anger that the warning has not been heeded.
Totally agree. Can't drive with this playing, I can't see well enough through my tears. ....then I crank up some "Indestructable", "The Voice", or "Ten Thousand Fists".....and suddenly, everything is okay again.😁😁😁
@@maggiereneemusic and if you look at the beginning he is annoyed at the fact that there is a bit of auto tune in the mic output. he asked for no auto tune prior to the show.
And so now what we need is someone to take the S&G version, this version and then invert this version. Start out full voice, full weight and by the end have just the singer with as soft a voice as possible, heralding the state of the ringing sounds of silence.
62 and love this band! Me and my much younger at the time boyfriend used to drive to Wisconsin to watch them perform at colleges and stuff before anybody even know who they were. Love their music!!!
David (the singer) received specific approval and permission personally from Simon & Garfunkle to do their song. They heard him sing it and they were so impressed that they very much approved and found his version of their song really carried the message of the song in such a deep and felt way.
I'm surprised noone (that I saw) has stated the fact that...in his early years with Disturbed, the way he sings is very "gutteral"; and eventually when he sang, his diaphragm would push his stomach acid up and burn his esophagus/vocal chords...so, he had to get vocal coaching to pretty much learn to actually sing and not just shout... which is a blessing in disguise cuz.. now he can do both. :)
@@GwnSerchan "well, actually" you're right... But you obvi knew what the commenter meant. Maggie hasn't even heard disturbed before-- its close enough of a description within the context.
Not really. Just because Maggie wasn't familiar with Disturbed or heavy metal doesn't suddenly change the context. The song, including this version of it, isn't heavy meatal. Disturb's early work is, just not this song. It really doesn't matter what Maggie's perception is.
@@kdk9460 Do you really think all those react to videos, that the listener really hear the songs for the first time, when they are commenting them? Get real, they have gone through them several times before they release their videos.
No, that's a myth, Trent Reznor of NIN said something similar when Johny Cash made a cover of the NIN song "Hurt": "I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn’t mine anymore". What Paul Simon actually said was “In case you missed it, Disturbed did a wonderful rendition of The Sound of Silence"
@@bjornSE .. You are correct, I took the quote from the Rolling Stone interview with Paul Simon in 2018, and I mistakenly attributed it to his Facebook statement... My bad, but Paul Simon did actually say what I posted.
@@powerdavid6235 No worries, many people have made the same mistake, you have probably read it like that several times. If you edit your comment and add a correction it would help preventing other people from getting it wrong.
@@powerdavid6235....He didn't say they now own this, that is a direct quote on what Reznor said about Johnny Cash, as Bjorn pointed out. Paul did email David Draiman the next day saying "That was a beautiful rendition of my song, well done, it truly captured the heart of the original" (not exact quote, I paraphrased some, but close) Draiman said in the interview later, that besides the birth of his son, that was one of the greatest things ever to happen to him was getting a compliment from Mr. Simon, a living legend.
Metal and classical share a lot more in common that most people understand and along her journey into the world of metal of all types im very sure she will pick up on the different similarities.
Yeah, there's a little band called "Manowar" who routinely sit in with orchestras and conductors to take notes while the musicians and conductors are practicing for show... Metal has a LOT in common with older classical. You just have to tune your ears and listen for it. ;o)
I must thank the Band DISTURBED. In 2013 our son was killed by a Drunk Driver while he was leaving a Jason Aldean concert. When I first heard this song my heart dropped. I started crying because it reminded me of the deadly path my son had to take that night. In 2016 they dedicated the Sound of Silence to our son, Michael on the venue where he was killed.
Every time I hear Disturbed's version of 'Sound of Silence' it moves me to tears. I have chronic bilateral tinnitus that has affected my ability to 'pitch' when singing with friends or bands or in choirs but I remember songs sufficiently to centre my ears when listening. This performance simply 'moves' me in ways others don't.
Comparing this to the original, I've always felt that Simon and Garfunkel's version was sung as a desperate warning, while this version is being sung in rage, that the warning wasn't taken.
Andrew, as a child of the early 80's, S&G were on my perpetual playlist....you are RIGHT ON with your analysis of the two.. the first time I heard this from Disturbed, I knew it was as you said...we had the warning, and we did not heed! Next to S&G, this song, this version, has been on my all-time playlist for years (next to Dimash of course :)).Thanks for your post!
Oh my gosh, YES!! I grew up with the original. Now that I'm older, some days it just seems like "same shit, different decade". Said what I couldn't quite put my finger on. Nailed it, Andrew, nailed it.
@@deltadaze6836.....Sorry, it wasn't a warning, the song originally was called "Sounds of Silence" and was written by Simon, in a bathroom, he said he loved the acoustics in bathrooms, and would often go in his to play and relax, with the lights out and water running. That's how he got the opening line, "Hello darkness my old friend". Him and Garfunkel later starting preforming the song in The Village, NY, and after being picked up by Columbia, recorded it as their first single off their first album Wednesday morning 3AM. It was a commercial flop causing S&G to break up and go their separate ways. It wasn't until 1-1/2yrs later that it started to get local radio play. Their producer from Columbia remixed it, putting in the electric instruments and drums, shooting it up the charts. S&G, separately found out about it only by browsing through the magazine Billboard top 100. Paul was pissed about the remix, and didn't care for it, but neither of them wanted to look a gift horse in the mouth, so they signed back on with Columbia and released their 2nd album titled same as the song, but dropped the plural "s" calling it simply "The Sound or Silence" Simon has said in many interviews, it had no deep political or social message, he was barely 21 when he wrote it, and said it was just a young man with angst writing about people not talking to each other. He also says he is happy though, that people got their own message from it.
For me the difference between the Simon and Garfunkel's version and Disturbed version is: in S&G's, you are a passive witness, in Disturbed's you are an active participant.
Thank you for your comment! If you enjoy metal, I just posted a new Jinjer - Pisces (Live Session) reaction to be Premiered in less than 1 hour! Hope you can join us? 😁
Paul Simon was first and foremost, a Poet. The text is so important. Paul's version is sad, wistful. Disturbed's version is rage filled.. what a difference 50 years will make.. both correct for the times in which they were written.
David Draimen is a trained Cantor. Did classical training at college. He had bronchitis during this song. Just laughed when you said give my that rasp. 🤣🤣
I guess it would depend on your preference of metal, because I like all sorts of metal and most of my favorites dont have ballads. This was an amazing cover/ performance none the less
@@maggiereneemusic Also, this is the ONLY cover that Simon has ever endorsed! Yes David was sick when he did this performance, so good catch. David was also Classically Trained.
This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon & Garfunkel sang to alarm us, he sang to give us a final warning. You should watch their music video version. It is as beautiful as it is haunting.
I recently watched a video of where tribal people in India were watching the music video and the elders who had watched it got the meaning. They also added more to it. I also think that the writers and Disturbed would be humbled and amazed at how far the song has reached people.
Love watching the faces as he starts singing then the shock, surprise and wow look as it carries on! I get goose bumps every time I hear that deep rich voice
He was trained as a Cantor as a young boy and then went on to be trained as an Opera singer. And yes he was sick with the flu when he sang on this show
nope. not trained as an opera singer. i don't know where people get this info. in any interview he has done, he said he was trained as a cantor when he was a kid. after that, he took some lessons to help him get his vocal fry down. but he was not trained classically according to him.
His Vocal coach is Melissa Cross. She’s coached a lot of big names in metal. She’s a classical singing teacher and makes sure that her “screamers” don’t go away without classical training too. (According to her). I read somewhere he started seeing her about 10 years ago when he was losing his voice from his fry.
@@jenniferchough his brother is an opera singer, maybe that's where the cunfuzzion happens? I know David was kicked out of Hebrew school as a child, but went back for High School then lived in Israel for a year or so to train as a Cantor. Can't remember if that was before or after he decided not to go to Law School. Their loss, our gain!!! 💙💙💙
No offense, but thank God he doesn't sound like an Opera Singer. I like the way he can sing smooth & then turn it into anger & roughness on the high notes. Opera Singers would never sing it this way because they can't do it. They are trained to use their voices "differently". Also, Opera singers are hard to understand what words they are singing because of the way they annunciate. On the other hand, you can understand all the words Distortion sings perfectly. His diction is great, along with the phrasing, pitch & the tone of smooth & edgy.
Impressive how u noticed he was sick as he was. And the rasp is just his normal thing as he uses it their regular songs. Great band and great singer. There was a little autotune goin on in this performance but the producers were worried because he was sick. Apparently they didnt tell him and he wasnt very happy because he doesnt need it. Awesome performance nonetheless.
@@BanalGenius The Auto-Tune was added in post production before airing on television. The performance in front of the audience featured no Auto-Tune. Unfortunately this is somewhat of a standard practice on TV so-called live performances before air. There were several videos of David stating his unhappiness with the show for it's addition of Auto-Tune however once it had been done there was no undoing it. Those videos have since disappeared, I am unsure why. There are several other videos of them performing this live in concert for those curious about how he sounds without the tune. Spoiler, he doesn't need it. Great reaction to an amazing song and performance.
Disturbed's version of this song is so strong... so imminent and fraught with warning... so dire for action and yet so sad and what could be with failure to heed the warnings... S&G's original was almost like "reading" a history book and the emotion conveyed was "Oh well...". Yes. As a gen X guy, and a Marine of the 90's, THIS is the version I feel in my soul. THIS is the version it always should have been.
Someone early on said "Someone said metal vocalists cant sing!" David turned to the guy beside him and said "Here, hold my beer. Ill be right back." LOL!
He absolutely brings it in this version! I think most of the audience was in slight shock, listen to their reaction. CRAZY you could tell he wasn't feeling 100%,talk about being tuned in. Keep smiling young lady, well done.
Disturbed did to this song what Johnny Cash did to “Hurt”, and Whitney did to “I Will Always Love You”. It no longer belongs to S & G... this is a Disturbed song.
VERY well said! (9 inch nails admitted that Mr. Cash "owned" that song, Johnny Cash also did a Nick Cave song called Mercy Seat. Very impressed with that. And yes, Disturbed took full ownership of this song.
@@sonofeloah Just to take it to the next level. I'd say that Disturbed has a talent for pretty much anything they want to perform. ALL of their covers Land of Confusion - Genesis, Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - U2, Shout - Tears for Fears. Every one of these is as good or better than the original. In each one you can hear the original flavor of the artist being covered but at the same time you can hear it is Disturbed in not just the voice but the Music too.
David Draiman made one subtle lyric change from the original. He changed "And the sign flashed out its warning" to "And the sign LASHED out its warning." A small yet powerful change, and one that fits so well with this version of the song.

Yes that rasp is his trademark. That is his sound. When I first heard this song I was so happy he added his own touch to it. And I loved the low verse then the high verse pointing back to the original.
I saw a short interview of Paul Simon where he said that not only was this their favorite cover, he thought it brought out the meaning of the song better than their version! He actually liked this better that what they originally did. (or that was my take??) Either way, when you have the full support of the creators of a piece, it's pretty special. Love the reactions to this song. It is VERY MUCH my own reactions... I had no idea this guy could sing like this because all I ever heard was the guttural screaming before. I have since heard more of this man's great voice and hope he pursues it even more. HE SHOULD! More impressive still, the man had the FLU as he was singing this and still belted it our wonderfully. I STILL PREFER The Original Official Video of this Cover. The opening with the broken and silent instruments really set the stage for the whole brilliant video and brilliant performance and recreation of a classic.
In the era when Simon and Garfunkel recorded the original, dark songs would not get airplay. So the musical sound of the song could not match the lyrics. At the same time, the dichotomy of the dark lyrics set against the upbeat music embodied the societal conflict of the time
Id agree, that the cover is actually a more accurate portrayal of the lyrics and spirit of the original. A little too dark for the ‘plucky’ sound of folk, but S & G lived at a time when it was the sound of revolution and defiance. It was the right genre and sound to give birth to this amazing classic. The adaptation is gorgeous, and his deep and varied range and gravely yet highly controlled scream-harmonies are perfect.
David Draiman is an operatically trained singer from Chicago. On the day of this performance, he was fighting off the flu. I have also read that Mr. Draiman's performance actually brought tears to Paul Simon's eyes and Mr. Simon went on to put a link to this performance on his own social media.
OMG, Disturbed's version of the 'Sound of Silence' is imo, one of the most powerful songs ever produced. And yoiu were rt, he was battling a cold during this performance

I've watched a dozen or so vocal coaches, classically trained singers, composers, react to this and you are the only person who immediately picked up on both the fact that David was sick during this performance and that he's had classical training. Big Kudo's to your ears!
He has one of the strongest voices and has quite a large range as well. He's one of the few singers who regularly performs live (not pre-recorded). Not only that, but he tinkers with his songs for the live performances, not simplifying the vocals, but stepping up the complexity. If you enjoyed David Draiman's voice, you will also enjoy Serj Tankian. He is also a classically trained vocalist, who became famous in the heavy metal space (lead singer of System of a Down). Maynard James Keenan is another one (lead singer of Tool) to check out.
I've been listening to Disturb for several years; I've always loved Rock n' Roll...but this gentleman brings me to tears...such an incredible voice...I listen to him daily...

I’ve seen him perform this live at the end of an hour and a half set and was astonished! It still gave me chills even after he’d been on stage for that long belting out songs. I would go see them again in a heartbeat
You hit it spot on! He admitted in a interview that he was sick with a cold when he did this live performance. You pick up on the most minute details, you are amazing yourself. 👍
You are the only reactor who I've seen who twigged to the fact that Draiman was sick when the band did this performance. I had no idea. To me, the Disturbed version is what "The Sound of Silence" was always meant to sound like. It is just amazing and so powerful.
I always love the anticipation of waiting to see the reaction of 1st timers to David in this song, when he kicks it into the metal sound. It makes reaction vids to this song so much better.
Thank you for your comment! 😁 Hope you will be at my new PTX Premiere of a reaction video tomorrow? Set your reminder and ring the bell for notifications. See you in the chats!
He has so much control of his voice. He turns the rasp on and off like it has a switch. That's really evident when he sings "tenement halls" tenement = rasp, halls = no rasp. I see people have suggested the video...it has so much symbology to go with the lyrics. It's really good. It also starts with the literal sound of silence, which throws a lot of people off.
To get the full range of Disturbed’s music, I recommend listening to “Down With the Sickness”, immediately followed by “Hold Onto Memories.” It’ll change the way you hear David’s voice forever.
One thing not mentioned in the comments I've seen. The whole band is here playing with him. The guitarist is on the piano, the drummer is on the timpanis and the bassist is the acoustic guitar to the right of the piano.
I played this for my 80 yr old mom and she really liked it, I love his voice and I hope you have now listened to Disturbed's other music, i'm 60 yrs old and I love this music, some people act like there is an age limit on liking metal(probably the reason why my hearing isn't so great, I like it loud)
The funny thing about heavy metal is that it takes serious chops, musically. Most people just play it off like it is just noise but these musicians and singers are incredibly talented, I am always happy when eyes are opened to it. Great reaction.
I've listened to David sing this live on YT so many times, and each time I hear him sing this song I get goosebumps and my eyes tear. Even if I binge watch like I am right now
I really like Disturbed's take on this song. I spent all of junior high and highschool in choir. I had a bit of a rasp in my voice at times and got called out for it. Little did the people calling me out for the rasp know that a lot of the time it was deliberately done and my directors loved it while I injected a little into the solo parts of my performances. I was in the All State Honors Choir throughout highschool and I made the All Northwestern United States Honors Choir every year I was eligible (freshmen are not allowed to participate). My highschool choir also went on foreign tours my sophomore and senior years. I have also performed at several Pops concerts performed by my choirs. I have actually met artists whose songs that I have performed and was complemented by both Lionel Ritchie (All Night Long) and Bruce Springsteen (I'm on Fire) my choir was also praised by several artists for performing "We Are the World" while in Japan and Hong Kong. I was actually asked by Willie Nelson for a copy of the recording of my highschool choir when I lived in Texas and happened to have the concert tape playing when I drove up to his bar in Elm Mott. I was lucky to be trained in singing by 2 of the greatest choir directors to ever live in my opinion. You will never find teachers who love music as i had in Boyd Holland (junior high school, may he rest in peace he passed away my sophomore year of highschool from cancer. He put off treatment for lung and brain cancer my freshman year of highschool because he refused to let down his students by leaving 2 months into the year. By the end of the year it was too late to save him.) and Renee Henderson in highschool. She was known worldwide for taking her choirs on international tours every 3 years. She has taken choirs to Europe, Asia, and Australia. She taught music and choirs in my school district for 40 years and we figured out when she retired that she had over 34,000 students in her highschool choirs and actually taught 3 generations of the same family. My niece cried for almost a week upon her retirement because my niece had been waiting for 5 years to finally enter highschool so she could learn from Ms. Henderson and "Hendy" as she was known retired the year before my niece reached the ninth grade. I come from a town of 5,000 people and the highschool only had 450 students but the choir averaged 265 students every year for over 25 years.

Yes he was sick during this performance. The fact that you picked this up is a testament to how good your ears are. I haven't seen anyone else pick that up in a react video yet.
Maggie, I love it when classically trained vocalists take the plunge and venture outside of their personal genre. Heavy Metal has produced some of the most amazing vocalists. David Draiman is just one. My personal favorites are Rob Halford of Judas Prist, and Geoff Tate formerly of Queensryche who still, to this day, has a 4 octave voice. Another vocalist that ventures into the speed metal or death metal genre is King Diamond. His music is very dark, but his voice is piercingly high and clear. Thanks for giving metal vocalists a chance.
Paul Simon called David Draiman after this performance to say it was the BEST cover he’d ever heard of his masterpiece. Understandably, Draiman was STUNNED.
Everyone seems to fawn all over this version of this song. I, myself, prefer the music video version. To me it's way more powerful. also consider some of Disturb's other covers. They do a great cover of "Land of Confusion" originally done by Genesis and "Shout 2000" originally "Shout" by Tears for Fears. Their other original stuff is really heavy and will grab you.

@@maggiereneemusic I agree, with Vern's first point that the original studio version by Disturbed in their official music video is a better version of it compared to this live version. Curious as to your thoughts Maggie!
Spot on about the studio version showcasing the song better - plus the transition from the operatic beginning to the metal ending is smoother. And he didn't have the flu when they did the studio version.
Its better to do a reaction to a live performance than a video that's been picked over and edited "for content" you can't give a true reaction to something that's been doctored.
I think most people pretend to prefer to Conan version, but it's because they have to use that one, because it's way less likely to take a copyright strike. I find some of the singing weak on this version, and there's a few duff notes

I love that you're the only vocal coach I've watched that has caught the fact that he was, in fact, sick during this performance.

Me too!!!
I went down a rabbit hole today. And yep, in like 20 react/critiques she is the only one that caught it. 3 others complained about "auto-tune".
@@snowstalker36 I would be shocked if this man ever used auto tune. I really don’t think he needs it. He might even be insulted at the suggestion.
He is a classically trained singer, and yes, he had the flu while performing this version of the track.
This track was also fully endorsed by Simon and Garfunkel and is apparently their favourite version of their track.
Good to know. Thanks! 😁
Most of it is his natural talent with some guidance along the way :-)
@@jenniferchough I think people mean he was trained as a classic cantor.
Aside from the other points yes he was sick, find the performance they did on Jools Holland if you want to see it live and at full strength

Pentatonix's cover is the hope that we can work through the consequences and come out well on the other end.
Can't the same be said for the Land of Confusion cover?
And so now what we need is someone to take the S&G version, this version and then invert this version. Start out full voice, full weight and by the end have just the singer with as soft a voice as possible, heralding the state of the ringing sounds of silence.

David (the singer) received specific approval and permission personally from Simon & Garfunkle to do their song. They heard him sing it and they were so impressed that they very much approved and found his version of their song really carried the message of the song in such a deep and felt way.
The rock and metal world has a lot of classically trained vocalists with staggering amounts of talent.
Thanks for your comment! 😊
Architects - heartburn is a prime example of this, one of the best bands in metalcore. So much passion and emotions in their songs
cause you gotta know what you're doing with your voice unless you want a short career cause you wrecked your voice...
Remember Pat Benatar? Hit rock singer of the 80’s? She was a classically trained singer, too, and switched to rock.
Their are singers that can sing loud and their are Singers that can bring a room to a dead stop, very rarely are they the same person.

Paul Simon said on his FaceBook page after hearing this rendition of the song, "Disturbed now own this song".. high praise indeed.
Thank you for the info. 😁

😀
Andrew, as a child of the early 80's, S&G were on my perpetual playlist....you are RIGHT ON with your analysis of the two.. the first time I heard this from Disturbed, I knew it was as you said...we had the warning, and we did not heed! Next to S&G, this song, this version, has been on my all-time playlist for years (next to Dimash of course :)).Thanks for your post!
I agree.
Let me say it again, please:

His Vocal coach is Melissa Cross. She’s coached a lot of big names in metal. She’s a classical singing teacher and makes sure that her “screamers” don’t go away without classical training too.

@@BanalGenius The Auto-Tune was added in post production before airing on television. The performance in front of the audience featured no Auto-Tune. Unfortunately this is somewhat of a standard practice on TV so-called live performances before air.

You are the only reactor who I've seen who twigged to the fact that Draiman was sick when the band did this performance. I had no idea. To me, the Disturbed version is what "The Sound of Silence" was always meant to sound like. It is just amazing and so powerful.
Thank you for your comment. Did you like my new Disturbed reaction video I just posted?
I always love the anticipation of waiting to see the reaction of 1st timers to David in this song, when he kicks it into the metal sound. It makes reaction vids to this song so much better.
Thank you for your comment! 😁 Hope you will be at my new PTX Premiere of a reaction video tomorrow? Set your reminder and ring the bell for notifications. See you in the chats!
agreed completely. i cry most of the time just watching the reactions, lol
He actually was sick during this performance. He still nailed it.
Thank you for your suggestion. Hope to see you at my 195K Subscriber Celebration Live Stream today?
Where he transitions stylistically from subway halls/tenement halls, he shows such incredible vocal control. Superb.
😀
To get the full range of Disturbed’s music, I recommend listening to “Down With the Sickness”, immediately followed by “Hold Onto Memories.” It’ll change the way you hear David’s voice forever.

This was one of the greatest live performances of this song
Bruh, I've watched literally 50 reactions to this and this is the first one to pick up that yes - he was sick for this performance. You go glen coco.
Glen coco 😂
One thing not mentioned in the comments I've seen. The whole band is here playing with him. The guitarist is on the piano, the drummer is on the timpanis and the bassist is the acoustic guitar to the right of the piano.
Thanks for the info! 😀
I played this for my 80 yr old mom and she really liked it, I love his voice and I hope you have now listened to Disturbed's other music, i'm 60 yrs old and I love this music, some people act like there is an age limit on liking metal(probably the reason why my hearing isn't so great, I like it loud)
So glad! 😍
the richness of his voice is amazing.
The funny thing about heavy metal is that it takes serious chops, musically. Most people just play it off like it is just noise but these musicians and singers are incredibly talented, I am always happy when eyes are opened to it. Great reaction.
Thanks! 😁
You nailed it when you where guessing that he had either an allergy or was sick. I think when he performed it he had a cold.
He had the flu
Mustaafa, that’s what I heard, too.
He was " Down With The Sickness "
cory bagley 😂😂😂😂
Thank you for the info!😁
"Give me that rasp" Buckle up young lady
😀
@@maggiereneemusic I (and many others) would love to see your reaction to Nothing compares to you by Chris Cornell.
@@soulscream78 oh I'd love that!
Do it Maggie .!
Temple of the Dog. Say Hello to Heaven
This is an iconic rendition. Pretty much perfection to the original
I've listened to David sing this live on YT so many times, and each time I hear him sing this song I get goosebumps and my eyes tear. Even if I binge watch like I am right now
😀
Her facial expressions while listening is a dead giveaway on how much she appreciated this cover
LOL! 😁
When a song can move you to drop a tear every time you listen to it, you know they did everything right!
Her: "yes, give me that rasp"
David: "Hold my beer"

I love watching Trained Singers react to David, he is SUCH an amazing Vocalist. Reactions from Singers when he uses that Rasp, priceless!
Thank you!😁
I cried the first time I heard this on the radio.

I cry each time I hear this song
This one and The light was their in Immortalized album. Being that I suffer from PTSD from my career as a medic/firefighter... the light especially is a reminder that no matter what darkness your are facing this is always eleven the slightest bit of light at the end.
The sound is appropriately disturbing. The hair on the back of my neck stands on end
😀

I love this reaction video. She has one hell of an ear and the technical skill and talent to back up her feedback.
