102° fever, sick with the flu and he’s seated because he almost passed out earlier; somehow he powered though it all to give us a nuanced performance that spans so many emotions before the rage-filled crescendo that so profoundly speaks to the current state of our sickening cognitive dissonance and ends on a note of despair. I absolutely love this, and I understand the audience was dead silent until the final note at which point he received about a 10-minute standing ovation. Masterful. 💙
I know they used auto tune, which he was pissed off about, but I wish he did it this the exact same way on the single. He goes more intense with the growl in this performance
I did the lighting for this performance along with over 800 other performances on the Conan show. This performance by David Draiman was one of the most memorable I ever had the honor if being a part of. FYI this performance was nominated for best rock performance at the Grammy's.
Best part about this, is knowing that Dave was sick and getting over a cold/flu leading up to this singing. Hence the nasaly tone you hear. Incredible he sang this good, with sick voice XD
I never tire of this performance, I never tire of watching people react to this performance. Unquestionably one of the best covers out there, it truly reimagines the original.
Imagine the surprise to the Conan O’Brien audience showing up for some celebrity interviews and out of nowhere and unexpectedly being treated to this masterpiece? They lucked out that night.
And again I find myself down a rabbit hole of watching reactions to this absolutely incredible performance by David Draiman and the band. Simply stunned every time I hear this song.
@@JohnHennyVocalStudio I have to concur with Jason. It's such a joy to see someone genuinely appreciate a song. I've seen comments on other reaction videos that said something to the effect that Simon & Garfunkel's version was the warning. Disturb's version is the wrath that comes from failing to heed that warning. Generally speaking when someone re-records a song, it's called a "cover" or a "remake". This is neither. It can only be described as an experience.
Every time I hear this, I am just so impressed by how (after all that intense gravel in the final verse) he closes out by going back to the glorious soaring clear high tones again. The ultimate in control. Gives me goosebumps every time.
I'm male, born in 1972. I'm not a big music enthusiast; I mainly listen to whatever is played on the radio. Throughout my whole life, I haven't had a favorite song that I could listen to 164 times and still not get tired of it... until I discovered Disturbed's version of The Sound of Silence. I've now spent 4 NIGHTS in a row listening to and watching this song, along with dozens and dozens of reaction videos... And I have to say, this song now owns me. Completely. I've never felt anything like this before. From the reaction videos, I've noticed that interestingly, this song touches men around my age SO deeply. Tears. Goosebumps. Repeatedly and constantly. I think I might need to see a doctor. But then again, I don't want to - it's SUCH a good song.
Found this a few years ago and have now watched it hundreds of times. My favorites are the reactions of people who truly know vocals as the instruments they are. Even untrained people can't help but respond but when a pro does and still is in awe??? So satisfying! He is indeed magnificent!
Some have said the original version was a warning. This version is the response to the warning being ignored. It is one of the best performances of all time. Watching you react to it emotionally rather than analytically is the most pleasurable part of your presentation. His voice is so powerful it knocked your camera out of focus 😆
He was! He had a severe case of the flu (it was before covid), high fever, etc., was so weak he agreed to sit for the performance. He's not a "sitting down" kind of singer.
there was another vocal teacher that pointed out in her analysis of the beginning verse that she thought he might be sick or have something going on with his throat.
I’ve watched (and have always been amazed by) Disturbed perform this absolutely amazing cover, so many times, I cannot even tell you. John Henry, your reaction totally NAILED the passion and talent of David Draimen above all other reaction videos, to date. Thank you. This is still my #1 favorite performance in my lifetime and I’m a 66 year-old, recently retired Fortune 100 sales professional, enjoying and reacting to your reaction. Thank you!
I understand that this video of this program was nominated for a Grammy and has a viewing of over 100 million. To me, if this audio could be synched with the video of the studio version, the combination would be so outstanding. The video has such a commanding story in itself; with the vocals, it can't be missed. I am 76, heard Simon & Garfunkel sing it as well as many others, and have never understood the song until I heard Disturbed do it; now I understand it and feel it.
This is the best cover ever! I e seen Disturbed perform this live twice and I’ve listened more times than I count. I love seeing someone react to this masterpiece. It will just never get old 🤘🏻
Thank you - you chose where to pause perfectly to keep the build up, you gave such insightful comments, and you showed respect to and enjoyment of a fellow artist. I really enjoyed this reaction. Many others may have done it, but few as well as you. Cheers.
@@JohnHennyVocalStudio The crazy part of this is that David was very ill in this performance. he had the flu and fever of 102. He had to sit because they were afraid he would pass out. He even needed help off the stage when they finished. He is simply amazing!!!
So fun to watch your reaction! I’m writing a chapter in my doctoral dissertation about the connectedness human beings find through music that is as deeply moving as this performance has proven to be for everyone who sees it. Seeing others react with astonishment and joy and awe is part of that experience of connected humanity. It releases endorphins, it lowers blood pressure and reduces the sense of isolation and anxiety that has been cloaking this planet for the last two years. It’s pretty incredible research to behold and I’m grateful this performance exists and I’m grateful for the gift of the many reactions I have seen to it. Wonderful stuff!
This is the best reaction I've seen. David Draiman is a masterful vocalist. A lot of youtubers forget most of us look for reactions to songs which are really special to us. Thank you for your respect.
Thank you so much for reacting to this performance John. I enjoy your reaction and respect your opinion. This was one heck of a cover, and you really showed a great respect for the singer.
We can't forget David Draiman hadn't sung acoustically since he was a teenager. Evidently the band went in studio and got the final take got the first try. He REALLY needs to sing acoustically more often, IMHO. 🥰
David Draiman...amazing range and control...a powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do . He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before.....just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! ...one of the best male vocalists on the planet imho. Got goosebumps yet again! Loved your reaction John.
I have watched this version literally a hundred times and many, many reactions. I loved your reaction...I really enjoy seeing someone’s surprise at his range and control while truly enjoying the experience. This has become my favorite song of all time....62 years. ❤️
David Draimen was taught in French Cantor, as was his father and grandfather who was a rabbi. When they did this he was very sick with the flu and was sitting on a stool because he was dizzy but yet he pulled it off. Also Paul Simon caught this show at home and called Draimen on the phone only to tell him the Sound of Silence was now his to sing and thanked him for doing a great cover of their song. It is amazing what David Draimen can do with his voice, he has the singing voice every guy that sings wishes he had. Don't you just love music?
1 word I've heard over and over by people reacting to this song is "WOW"! That's how 99.9% of us feel. His voice is awe inspiring and hits your heart and soul in raw 8:06 emotion!!! THE BEST COVER OF ANY SONG EVER ❤❤❤❤
He had a really bad flu that day too. Apparently staff front behind the scenes came running amazed at what they were hearing. He’s also a classically trained cantor. I love this so much 🩷
Love listening to John Henny doing a reaction because he explains what is going on and gives us an excellent understanding of how a vocalist is able to do these things with his vocals. Well done John for a great reaction and another insight as to how these vocalists are able to control there voices.
I've been obsessed with this rendition of the song, probably listened to it 100s of times, seen every reaction to it, sends chills down my spine every time. I love the reactions where people genuinely cry over the emotions it evokes but I love your reaction, just laughing at how fucking flawless he sings.
All done while he had a vocal cord lesion. Got VERY mad that the audio guy turned on auto tune…vowed never to go back to Conan because of it, and had his ENT on speed dial because he wasn’t sure what would happen. Had vocal cord surgery 2 days later. The man is a LEGEND vocally. Classically trained…completely under appreciated, and has a heart as big as his voice. He truly does NOT get the accolades he so deserves.
I’ve watched Disturbed’s version a hundred times at least on YT. Listened to it driving many more times. I’ve watched multiple reaction vids as well. This is my favorite one. First time I’ve heard he takes control of the tempo and realized how true it is!! I’ve been a HUGE metal head fan and a HUGE fan of Disturbed for 29 years. When they dropped this I was absolutely flabbergasted. I knew David D.’s voice was amazing but had no idea at how mastered he was… insane. James Hatfield, David Draiman, Phil Anselmo, and so many others whose talents are seriously overlooked by the masses due to their style of music. Thanx for a great reaction, it was genuine and love the energy!
The lead singer of Disturbed is a guy called David Draiman and he was asked one time who his Rock God was and he said it was the late great Freddie Mercury. And I think that you can see an awful lot of similarities between the former Queen frontman and Draiman's performance. His attention to detail is just masterful and I hope that he does a lot more of these types of songs.
Great review! David Draiman's vocals and technique are just glorious. This is just a special cover that draws people who never cared for folk music (🙋🏻♀️) into the stunning lyrics. Of course I've heard the original, I grew up with it. But as a child, I didn't hear the lyrics, I only vaguely heard and dismissed a style of music I didn't care for. So I never actually LISTENED to the lyrics until I found this version. It's so much more impactful to me. I was driving several hours for a business trip the first time I heard it and I was so blown away I just kept hitting the repeat button over and over... You should watch the video, as well. If not for reaction, just for your own enjoyment. The images are so powerful and really back up the lyrics. Nicely done, I thoroughly enjoyed this. BTW, if you want to try other Disturbed songs that aren't terribly metal, perhaps try one of these. Their videos are always great, as well. "The Light" "Hold Onto Memories" "A Reason To Fight" "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" (a cover of Sting's song) "Uninvited Guest" (I find this song intriguing in technique.) Even in their most metal sound, his voice effortlessly commands and leads over the top of heavy guitars and complicated drum patterns. You just never know where they're going next.
Have become addicted to watching reaction videos of this song, what a talent and gift to be able to evoke this kind of reaction; goosebumps and tears .. from every single person who listens to it and literally theres not a voice coach out there that doesnt react the same way! What a testament to David Draimens voice ... and to be sick while he did this live version... wow ! Awesome 🤯👏👏👏
I really appreciated your knowledgeable review of this song, it amazes me that every element, the accompaniment, David draiman's vocal techniques, the careful emotional buildup of the song, the visual beauty of the background, but most of all the power and emotion that draiman's voice brings to this - all these parts come perfectly together to make a whole that transcends anything else I've ever heard. On this night, in this performance, David draiman and Disturbed created magic.
Knowing that you appreciate the talent it takes and watching The Joy on your face reacting is one of the best things I've seen in a long time. Thank you.
I’ve heard this song a lot both Paul Simon and disturbed, for years. I’ve also watched multiple reaction videos to this song. Your reaction video is by far my favorite. I love the way you explain his talent, because Lord knows I can’t carry a tune so it’s really nice to see someone who’s at your professional level reacting to this. Thank you for sharing.
Best reaction I've seen yet. When I watch a true professional's face and body react so naturally and honestly, I feel... I'm almost proud of the band... hard to describe, but definitely a masterpiece
This is by far my favorite video to watch. The fact that David was sick with a 100+ degree fever while performing was magical. For me a true lover of music this song when I hear it moves me to tears because it truly is beautiful. The official video on Disturbed singing this is very emotional.
Disturbed makes you listen to the lyrics. I love Simon & Garfunkel's version too but it's so easy to just listen to their harmony instead of the lyrics. Not with this version! ♥️
I almost can't believe you hadn't done this one yet! Great to see you do it, and I enjoyed your reaction and commentary. One suggestion -- have you considered backing up a little (maybe 5 seconds) when resuming the video? I've seen some other folks who do reactions do that, and it helps get back into the flow of the song, especially if you happened to stop right before an important moment. All the best.
There are so many great moments in this song. The octave shift at the beginning of the third verse. The drop to base with "silence like a cancer grows. The multi-coloured tones in the "take my arms" verse. The seamless shift from distortion to clear near the end (tenement halls) and that final crescendo. It was great to see you react so viscerally to them all.
you have described what I was feeling about his vocals. His talent is rare and beautiful particularly the way he goes from the most dramatic but not overly so to soft rich and quiet tones.
I've been watching all the reactions to this song and this one is my favorite!! Your reaction is so great. I love seeing people amazed by how gorgeous his take on this song is. His vocals are amazing. Some people have such a blank face the entire time - and that's no fun to watch. Not just that, but his singing is so incredible, how can anyone not crack a smile or say something?? Loved your reaction, and I love this song!!!
I absolutely enjoyed your critique on David Draiman's voice. His somber baritone to his melodic raspiness up to the climax where David holds onto the "N" and gives his audience chills. Excellent Sir. I have subscribed to your channel so that i may enjoy more of your work, your expertise, and your ability to connect with your audience. Well done Sir. Well done. I applaud.
I've listened to so many reaction videos for this and I find one really amazing bit that nobody has ever commented on is just how easily Davis can switch from the distortion to the pure. I think this is best illustrated in the line "...the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls..." where he makes that instant switch between "tenement" and "halls". It's such an abrupt switch, and it always amazes me. And to think he did this amazing performance while he was pretty sick, and was still able to produce this fabulous sound.
I'm no musician. Nor a singer. I'm just a sonarman. And I just love how rich the sound coming out from him is. I mean by that, you can clealrly separate each component of the effect (wich as far as I can tell, are non digital, but pure practice) from his voice and find the pure, untouched tone behind (wich I usually do on boats, and I understand this might be a bit strange as a comparison, but trust me on that one). David is a master of his craft. I don't know you yet, but I loved your review. It felt as honest and emotionnal as the first time I heard that song. And YOU are the professional.
Great reaction! I’m not a musician or singer, so although some of the terms are foreign to me, you did a great job helping me to understand the process. There’s a lot more to singing well than just having a nice voice!
I you could bring yourself to cease and desist interrupting i might subscribe but you have to be the effing center of attention

"The Light"
"Hold Onto Memories"
"A Reason To Fight"
"If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" (a cover of Sting's song)
"Uninvited Guest" (I find this song intriguing in technique.)
Even in their most metal sound, his voice effortlessly commands and leads over the top of heavy guitars and complicated drum patterns.
Loved how you enjoyed it!
DAVID IS AMAZING, I HEARD HE HAS A FEVER AND COLD!!! THEY ARE AMAZING!!!
True story. He was very ill when this was taped. Amazing.
Knowing that you appreciate the talent it takes and watching The Joy on your face reacting is one of the best things I've seen in a long time. Thank you.
I saw them live in 2019 and when they did this sound I had goosebumps the whole time. Hearing it in person was absolutely amazing!
Your reaction - Perfection. There is Joy on your face; where it belongs. Rock on. 🤙🏼
Subbed my man, you know your science
Much appreciated!
He is so amazing and during this performance he was quite sick with the flu. Imagine that!
Best reaction I've seen yet. When I watch a true professional's face and body react so naturally and honestly, I feel... I'm almost proud of the band... hard to describe, but definitely a masterpiece
Haven’t stopped listening to this every day, gives me goosebumps!
Even more amazing with this performance, David Draiman was actually very ill and fighting a 102 fever when this was taped. Astounding.
It was auto tuned.
Gives me chills EVERY SINGLE TIME
Its even more impressive if you know that he was sick that day and had problems bending his voice. Absolutely incredible
Thank you for your great comment.
Instant subscribe. Smart, knowledgeable, passionate comments. Minimal interruptions. I loved this reaction ❤
This is by far my favorite video to watch. The fact that David was sick with a 100+ degree fever while performing was magical. For me a true lover of music this song when I hear it moves me to tears because it truly is beautiful. The official video on Disturbed singing this is very emotional.
100degrees? That’s the boiling point of water lol
Disturbed makes you listen to the lyrics. I love Simon & Garfunkel's version too but it's so easy to just listen to their harmony instead of the lyrics. Not with this version! ♥️
@@Dallass66 He means F and not C, but fever is getting higher with every comment😁
100 degrees?? Are you sure
@@pandasanding7036 100 degrees F are 37,78 degrees Celsius
I’m a major fan of Disturbed’s Sound of Silence cover and this is the best reaction video I’ve seen. Thank you.
You can keep your fancy opera singers....give me David Draiman and his velvet voice every time 💕 💖
If i remember correctly he was actually sick with the flu during this performance and he still nailed it. Imagine if he wasn't sick. 🤯🤯🤯
I love your reaction. I am moved everytime I hear him sing it!!!
Idk if anyone has mentioned this or not but David actually trained to be a cantor. I thought that was pretty interesting.
On Netflix the video is longer and a little different it so good
I almost can't believe you hadn't done this one yet!
Good suggestion. Thanks.
Love to watch a professional who appreciates this.
I’ve watched all of these reactions on RUclips. It’s so epic. A masterclass. Love your reaction and comments. Well done mate!
you have described what I was feeling about his vocals.
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed the reaction. Yes, a fantastic vocal performance!
The Charismatic Voice picked it out and explained in great detail all the different techniques David used while performing this song.
He was unwell during this performance....so so incredibly talented!!
Glad the video was helpful.
John you really need to hear and react the live version of this song with Disturbed and Myles Kennedy. Myles adds to this song something very special
John you should definitely do more reaction videos. Your expert descriptions were refreshing !
