    ➡️ In today’s “playlist” and “shuffle” culture, some of these deep cuts from classic albums get forgotten about. I nearly forgot about “Rosetta Stoned” from TOOL, and after many requests I decided I’d go back in time and reacquaint myself with this bizarre track from the “10,000 Days” record. A select few parts came back to me quickly, but a sizable chunk of the song felt brand new! It was a blast putting this one under the microscope and listening with a critical ear, and I heard bassist Justin Chancellor make a lot of bass moves I don’t hear him do too often: lyrical bass fills, bold counterpoint, and playing so dynamically underneath the fragile vocal performance to really elevate the song’s pacing. I also discuss how Maynard’s vocals are the antithesis of a typical “lead vocal” role, how Adam Jones can add ONE additional note to a chord and intensify the song, and how at any given time, the four of them can all represent a lead line within the track. All of Tool’s signature moves are in this one, but in a whole new “B-Side” light!

      This is also in my top 3 Tool songs of all time, along with Third Eye and Pneuma. I was a full blown psychonaut as a young man 🍄😁 so I focused a lot on the lyrics of those songs at first (I can recite the lyrics for almost every Tool song from memory.) And admittedly have never really focused on the bass for Rosetta Stoned in particular, this was a great analysis 👍
      Also, Disgustipated is a close 4th on my list, amazing lyrics in that song as well as very unique instrumentals.

    • @gosborg
      @gosborg 6 месяцев назад +3

      Rosetta Stoned is definitely a hidden gem. It’s extremely complicated: it evolves at crazy pace, never quite repeating itself, with what feels like a thousand different time signatures overlapping each other. Classic Tool.

      Man, this is so true. It’s 100% Tool, but more epic in a way. It’s the ultimate ‘release’ after a huge tension build up. I even get sort of sad when you get to ‘to write it down for all the world to see’ knowing this section is almost over. Rewind, repeat a couple of times and then move on 😅

  • @D4N1CU5
    @D4N1CU5 6 месяцев назад +49

    One of my absolute favorite tool songs. I get goosebumps every time when he says "Alrighty then, picture this if you will..." and you get that little guitar arpeggio of like 4 notes and then boom! the whole band are immediately locked into the tightest most relentless groove ever.
    The whole song has this hypnotic swaying feel to it and is riddled with weird time signatures and polyrhythms but you can still feel the groove. The lyrics are a perfect fit with my favorite tool line ever: "And he looked right through me, with somniferous almond eyes, don't even know what that means, must remember to write it down."

    The time signature changes and polyrhythms in this song are insane. It's one of my favorite songs to play and it all feels natural once you get the sway of it. most the stuff you thought was 6 or 7...was actually 11. i count it like 123, 123, 123, 12. That funky awesome bass groove around @16:30 is a 5:3 poly, then Danny adds the 4, it's nuts, and so much fun to play on Bass. The bass is hitting that punchy higher melodic note, following the snare, on every 3rd beat, but it's counted in 5.

    This is one of my all time favorites by them. Heck, it's one of my all time favorite songs ever. I was one of those that voted for this in that poll. Maybe it's such a deep cut that a lot of people who voted haven't even heard it before. I wish I had the time to go to one of their shows now to see them play this live. I almost always listen to Lost Keys, the song that leads up to this one, before this one. Between those 2, it makes an amazing 15 or so minute song, and it don't seem like 15 minutes either. This one isn't the only fantastic deep cut either. There's both parts of 10,000 Days (very deep and emotional), The Patient (Off Lateralus, i've seen them play that one live), Ticks and Leeches, the stretch on Aenima between Message to Harry Manback and Pushit, Bottom (featuring an appearance of Henry Rollins), and Swamp Song. So many fantastic deep cuts to be had. I'm glad you went and looked back at Rosetta Stoned after so long

    Do all the deep cuts and stop as many times as you want, this is the best. I think you'd appreciate the lead-in song "Lost Keys" only because it's bass driven with a hypnotic phrasing. When this album dropped, they would open the shows with only Justin on stage playing extended versions of it as an intro. It would be cool to see your take on it.

    13:35 starts a part where adam is in a different time sig than justin/danny and the rhythmic dissonance (as you referred to in another video). It is like an audio gyroscope whose passages align predictably in different places until the mathematics all add up and they converge. Dude, I like your channel. You're pretty cool and junk. I'm also afflicted by the the bass epidemic. I love your reactions. I had a thought. Maybe it's cool, maybe not. I'd like to see what you're up to. Musically. Like, are you working on any projects? Doing any session work? Writing shit at home just for fun that no one will ever hear? You're an amazing player, I especially love your work with STS. That's right up my alley. Just curious. Maybe it would be fun. Anyways, nice work, dude. Be well. Keep slayin.

    Another great video Mark, your channel is the best. I hope you still do a video about Slipknot and Paul Gray. He's the reason I stayed playing bass...

    Imagine being Danny, Justin, and Adam and coming up with this song, then giving it to Maynard and thinking “How the fuck is he going to write lyrics over that?” Then Maynard comes back with lyrics that fit perfectly with the feel of the song. Credit to all of them, but it blows my mind that Maynard writes his parts AFTER the songs are done. It seems impossible

    If you want another deep cut, try Intension followed by Right in Two as they are sequenced on the 10,000 days album. The combo of the two are much more ethereal than your avg Tool song and Justin's parts are amazing.

    This one was too chaotic for me at first. Definitely not a mainstream song. That said - it's one of my favorites these days.
    Great react!

    I would advise anyone going to see Tool in concert to realize exactly what you just said as a preface. Maynard’s vocals are another instrument and he is not there to be the focus. An article once called them the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. They all have an equal part to play and you’re there for every piece of it.

    Hey! Discovered your channel recently. You're doing a great job! Though I'm not a musician myself, but it's interesting to listen. You precisely describe with words how I feel about TOOL songs.
    But there's another band, that I adore as much as TOOL. It's Killing Joke. Please, make video about them if you've got a chance!

    the fact that this tune scored last in the poll tells you a lot about the people listening to it.

    "I did come from the age of listening to full albums ..."
    We lost something when we moved away from that. The length and format of an album is able to to evoke and convey so much more than an individual tune can, even a sprawling prog track. And an album can provide insightful context to a song. All while remaining enjoyable in it's entirety in a single session.
    I've always preferred listening to full albums over individual songs.

    so much respect for Justin. Using a pick on these songs and always keeping it so complex. i love this band and their synergy, they work so well as a unit as well separately to always come back together at the end around the big part of the song

    I always keep wondering how the bassist make out any of the riffs on the songs. I can, on the easy riffs or the ones that are distinctly mixed, make out like half the riffs. But with Tool it's just like when it's similar to guitar or very big clear lines I can make it out. Most of this I can't tell other than it sounds cool and something in the background probably helps a lot. I'm that guitarist who is trying to get some hang of good musical bass. Finally getting the hang of Tool got me into caring about the bass more, the guitars are cool, sure, but it's just there to support the drums and bass... So I listen to Tool for bass and drums despite being a guitarist. God damn, shit the bed. I really love this song for the whole theme and how the music supports that feel. The riffs are so catchy while being much like being in a trance. Great for meditating.
