What’s your favorite Tool song, as far as Justin’s bass parts? It’s probably this track or “The Grudge” for me. Let me know what Tool should I should do next! 👊🏻💥
What I love most about Tool is how much space they like to use in their music. Long intros to build atmosphere, deep melodic intermissions that put you in a trance. They aren’t afraid to make you listen to a 10 minute song that feels like 5 only minutes. Such a special time to be alive to witness a gathering of such genuine art.
Yeah, comparing modern RHCP to modern Tool is kinda like comparing early 80s Stones to late 60s Beatles. Brown Sugar vs. Two of Us… the Stones are fucking hack sellouts.
I don’t think I’ve heard anyone articulate the sophistication of Tool’s music as well as you do. I’m constantly saying in my head “Yes! Exactly! That’s so insightful.” Thank you so much 🙏🏼
Great video mate! It truly is a masterpiece of a song. If you haven't already seen it, check out Elizabeth (The Charismatic Voice) analogy of the vocals. Also an awesome video!
Exactly, no need to try to spend hours trying to figure out the time signatures, which we all know are just out of this world, but spend time analyzing how each instrument (including MJK) just interweaves/diverts/converges with/towards each other. And the effects, and the progression of the song, etc. just Can say: Thank you very much ! Checking your Schsim video after this one
After Maynard sings "liar lawyer mirror for ya what's the difference?", the drums, bass, and guitar all come in simultaneously which to me is an exclamation point!
After you’ve been through the whole song getting all the different dynamics and then that point where it just drops with all the instruments hitting you’re right, that is 100% magic
I am a brand new tool fan and a guitarist and I love how subdued Adam Jones is. Never shredding or being obnoxious. Sometimes you forget he’s there. And I love when the guitar shuts up every now and then
Welcome to the club! One of my favourite things about Tool is exactly that - you know Danny, Adam, and Justin could go absolutely HAM at all times, but they space it out and keep you wanting more.
TOOL is art at the highest level. I see 4 master's at their craft: Maynard's lyrics and vocals are well thought out and have so many meanings into one. Justin's bass is like Thor's hammer in a bass guitar. Adam's guitar is alien-like from the 4th dimension. Danny's drum's and technique reminds me of a human octopus doing 12 things at once add it all together and you get masterpiece music. Fuckin incredible band!!
1000000% Got to sere them this year, and i was physically blown away. Been going to concerts since the early 80's, saw some of the 'biggies', and with out a doubt, Tool had to be THE BEST CONCERT EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD. every sense was pummeled by the time i walked out of MSG. Being a drum and bass head, i was please to see Maynard is a part of the band with his vocals just being another instrument. Tool is definitely a band where you cannot remove one of its parts and continue on.
Dude appreciate the breakdown of Justins mastery of the bass. So many people praise Danny but Justin & Adam are phenomenal musicians as well. Best freakin band ever, nothing else is even close.
Not for me. I can't fall in love with any music immediately. Even the last 2 tool albums I wasn't sold until I got a few listens, despite being my favorite band.
I’m not even a tool fan but as a musician you nailed the explanations so perfectly. I’m probably about to dive into tool tomorrow for the first time because of this video
Fabulous analysis. Your ability to articulate the intricacies of Tool's music is second to none. Helps me appreciate their music on a deeper level. As a longtime Tool fan, I didn't even think that was possible. Thank you, sir.
That speech around the 8 minute mark just put into words why I love tool so much. How they constantly build the song over the course of many minutes, and don't give you the peak towards the end even if the chorus has already happened. Meanwhile most other bands have the chorus be the peak, and it just doesn't mean as much
I haven’t thought of it before but the last part of the song, starting with “lier, lawer…”, is basically a quick recap of the whole song. First lone vocals, main riff, C over D, chorus, bride and then payoff (which is new). It’s been my favourite tune since 2006 and I’ve never thought of this before. Fucking Tool!❤
This is absolutely my favorite song from Tool. It has just the right amount of everything. You're right, no one instrument drives the song for long. Perfection
Tool is one of the most cohesive band. Everything is well thought of. I love the little sounds here and there when you listen to their songs on headphones.. Even better live. 4 different people makes their music uniform and meaningful My favorite song is 46/2. I love Justin's signature intro for that song.
They left the Pot on the high D bc it leads perfectly into Lipan Conjuring as a cool down and then into Last Keys,. Maynard has said himself in the past the reason they were not on streaming platforms was bc TooL Albums are created ands meant to be listened to front to back. You can pick many tracks throughout the discography that supports this and to this day TooL is one of the only bands that puts together a complete album that is created to be listened to track 1-10. Yes they make great singles. But if you also listen to the album as a whole. You understand the vision on each listening experience.
Thank you so much for analysis - explaining who is playing what, when.and how. That is really important to me. I’m convinced you have to let their music flow around you leading you to something connected musically but new.
I really appreciate your take on Tool's songwriting. The psychology of placing riffs, chord pairings and all that stuff is super interesting to me and this video got me looking at The Pot with even more appreciation
I look forward to your Helix patch. I’m only a casual Tool fan but always appreciate the musicianship of them all especially those basslines and that TONE is killer. Can’t wait to try it out!
Hey there, just letting you know I've released my Helix presets that include the Tool one I'm using in this video. It's over on the Low End University Patreon: www.patreon.com/LowEndUniversity
Could not NOT comment on it, to be honest! Too good! The analysis of The Pot was phenomenal, buddy! Also, all your comments on their music in general. I'm a huge Tool band - one of a kind musicians. They are like the Pink Floyd of metal, soulful, ambiental, poetic and avangarde. Thanks for the video, I'll be sure to check out more from you.
Excellent breakdown of a classic track. I'd recommend Kayo Dot if you're a fan of music that is very deliberate with a satisfying payoff. The composer, Toby Driver, also has some great bass tones.
This is the most informative reaction video I've ever seen! I'm pumped to learn why I love TOOL more. Also, I don't share vids often... sent this one to a few, thx
The way you explain this song is perfect. I have listened to this song many thousands of times and every time I notice some new little thing that hits my brain's pleasure center. It is BRILLIANT
I’m here for it! ❤. The funk, the soul, bluesy vibe this album emits hits!!! This was my favorite track but damn… they are all my favorite. Thank you for the informative view of a fantastic band/song.
Yeah, I've always felt this song is all about the bass. That's what I love so much about TOOL. Not many rock/metal bands really let the bass shine quite like they do.
Tool is light years ahead. Their execution, ideas, creativity, arrangement, transitions, lyrics make them exceptional; they have done what few other bands have. What makes them even more exceptional is that Tool is more of an experience than a band. Spiral Out...
This song is a prime example of why they are called TOOL.. they use all The tools to capture each moment with different tool to drive the moment and section of the song . The artist level is off the charts...
Dude, FANTASTIC point about the loss of swagger when picking every single note! I never noticed that before, but you're 100% right, that undefined swagger factor is key to the "soul" of this song. My fav Tool song is the current Tool song I'm listening to at that moment haha! Thanks for the video, count me subbed!
I’m new to your channel but I just subbed because the way you connect what musicians hear and how it relates to what a song FEELS like is unique. Your explanation of why the intro bass FEELS different due to the technique used is not something the average person would ever be able to discern. Thank you for digging deep into what makes Tool unique and why they have that “distinct” sound that non-musicians wouldn’t ever be able to articulate. Few bands are able to appeal to both musicians and normies (like dirty loops), and you’ve successfully described how they’re able to do that. 👏 👏
High praise! This means so much, thank you!! I really enjoy trying to point out subtleties that I've noticed that seem to be really impactful to the whole delivery of the song. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed this. See you around!!
That was well described. "One way ticket you can't get off, and don't want too".. there's so many endings that you have to listen to the build up, to really get all the emotion and build up we were waiting for.. so many great songs by tool have this, and do this to me.. u can't just start at the ending, u must listen to it allth way thru, like a one way ticket.. I like that analogy sir
I had the privilege to briefly own a 2016 Wal MKIII 5 string, and my god are they monstrous. Had to offload it because of changes in my finances, but I miss it every day. My bongo bass gets me in the ballpark but there’s no way to replicate that crunchy wal tone without just getting a wal.
I do look forward to Tuesday and Thursday for your videos their such a treat Mark! The way you analyze and just speak is top tier!! We’re getting you on SBL you deserve all the glory from the bass community I loved how long this video was
Love your breakdown. They seem to be only truly appreciated by musicians and enthusiasts. Been to 2 concerts now and it's 10 fold live! Can't wait for #3! Takes them 10 years to put out an album NOT because they're lazy.. It's because they're brilliant!!!!! Most people just don't respect our understand. They're our generations Rush I feel. Or Zeppelin... Amazing
Im speechless with this song....u made the song speak for itself....and i see the song slowly talk itself out....a few understands the song...u made it as if everyone is already opening up...their minds...good for them..to catch up to something good ....treasure worth a million listen
This song makes the hair on my arms stand up. One of the most powerful heavy rock, metal songs I've experienced. All 4 guys are just absolutely just nailing this thing to the wall. Nice job showing how the complex bass parts are accomplished!
Exactly well said! Listening to Tool is like watching a sports team on stage. They pass it back and forth like a REAL team. Blows your mind and your ears at the same time.
You have no idea how much I needed this. Thisis my favoritesnf from Tool and I love watching reaction videos to it, I need no more, this was the best one ever. Specially cause I'm just learning howto play the bass. Loved it.
Chancellors Sound.. 🤤 Eargasmic.. 👌 Also, Ryan Martini From Mudvayne.. Unique Sound Aswell. Justin And Ryan Both Add Their Own Unique Style To Their Bands .. Bass FTW!! 🫡🫡🫡🫡
When we're talking about prog rock you might be interested in Riverside band. I would say bass plays the main role in songs, but the general relationship between instruments (musicans) is awesome. It's hard for me to pick up the best song but: - Acid Rain - In live version bass plays main riff which sounds like a guitar and keyboard plays bass riff. :D - Wasteland - again bass is played like a guitar and keyboard plays bass at the beginning... But it changes during the song. - The Depth of Self-Delusion - Second Life Syndrome Each of their song is unique in different way. Great journey for me. When I start listening them I can't stop :D
I play music, and have been listening to tool since the late 90's. Love all their stuff. Have listened to this song hundreds of times and you have pointed out things I've never heard or noticed before. So, with that thank you! Andy request is that you now break down every one of their songs 😆
It is a sexy bass tone. I play guitar , only ever fooled around with bass a little but man I love the bass in this song, it wouldnt be the same without it
This video popped up on my Home Screen. TOOL has been my favourite band since the ‘90s. It made me happy how you broke this down and you can tell TOOL really means something to you. Subscribed. Onto watch your Schism video. 🤘🏼
TOOL is totally unique, really on it's own league. The greatest musical phenomenon of recent times. These guys are revolutionizing music, not just Rock/Metal but music in general. Genius work of composition, like Yes and Rush was back then but even better. It's just incredible.
@@arlancastillo1637 Meshuggah did but in all honest their formula has stagnated a fair bit. Thier technical ability is amazing but their composistion skills stopped getting better years ago. Dont get me wrong they are amazing bit they stopped changing the game.
yopu are one of my favourite bass players, scale the summit its one of myu favourite bands and tool wass so much importtant in my journey to became a musician , i mean all the thing i love in just one video, amazing
One of my favorite things is to see people react to hearing Tool for the first time. It’s always blowing their minds My mind still gets blown hearing them
I’m a guitar player but stumbled across this on my home page. Really enjoyed this video, very informative and broken down. Really enjoyable to watch! Keep the TOOL videos coming 🌀
Im less than 4 minutes in and Im so excited about this video just because as a tool fan everytime I listen to the pot I cant help but notice how much Justin carries the song the whole time, so seeing a bass teacher analyze it is just *chefs kiss*
I did a video recently playing the guitar and bass for "Schism", and "The Pot" is next and Im supernpumped for it. Still getting a feel for bass. It this is one of my favourite tracks to play.
It's hard to pin down, they all are audio gold at different times, but for the last few months Parabola stands out. I will latch on to something else as my perception (not my love) changes.
Thanks so much for this video. I've always been so... captured by this song along with many other Tool songs and as someone who is learning but still very music illiterate I have never been able to illustrate what it is that's so amazing about their songs. Your breakdown does that perfectly. I can finally put my feelings for this song into words and understand what I'm hearing! :P
Every time I heard the pot I never even thought about the bass solo. Not even as a guitar solo or anything, it was just apart of the ambience and the feeling of the song (like you said) and now I only appreciate it more.
Tool and A perfect circle are just amazing as they let each member shine in each song. They don’t need to do a solo. Each song shows the members are incredibly talented. And they feature the drums and bass over the guitar. That’s what hooked me.
What’s your favorite Tool song, as far as Justin’s bass parts? It’s probably this track or “The Grudge” for me. Let me know what Tool should I should do next! 👊🏻💥
The Pot and Prison Sex 😂
Pneuma :D
Wings for Marie and 10000 days always 😁
my fav's: Lateralus, Vicarius & 46and2
My favourite is Forty Six & 2.
Tool and Rhcp are very similar. They are equally talented musicians.
@@inihawfestival7677 Comparing Anthony Kiedis to Maynard James Keenan is comical.
To be fair that's most of Prog metal/rock bands
@@whatdothlife4660 Or any of the rest of the band either. They are definately on a completely different plain
Yeah, comparing modern RHCP to modern Tool is kinda like comparing early 80s Stones to late 60s Beatles. Brown Sugar vs. Two of Us… the Stones are fucking hack sellouts.
The way that they truly play as a BAND makes me giddy. They’re each the master of their own domain but none seeks to be the star. So good.
Could not have said it better🙌
"This is just a funk song packaged in a metal housing." Perfect summary of this incredible song.
👍
I don’t think I’ve heard anyone articulate the sophistication of Tool’s music as well as you do. I’m constantly saying in my head “Yes! Exactly! That’s so insightful.”

I made the same kind of comment. He's the "Tool "of reactors.

One of my favourite things about Tool is exactly that - you know Danny, Adam, and Justin could go absolutely HAM at all times, but they space it out and keep you wanting more.
Adam has always had such a knack for taking these simple parts and putting them together in such interesting and effective ways.
That 4-on-the-floor drum and bass breakdown at 10:00 is some of the sickest stuff Tool has ever composed, in an incredible history.
It really just does make your head bop no matter what mood you are in.
You don’t know what 4 on the floor means do ya

I think one of the most climactic songs is Right In Two. That song builds from a really slow melodic theme to a major climax.

They’re one of a kind. I agree that there is no other band that can do what they do.
This is absolutely my favorite song from Tool. It has just the right amount of everything. You're right, no one instrument drives the song for long. Perfection

Brilliant 🍃
your breakdown of the Master artists ~ Tool
I just LOVE Justin !! He lays down what I like to pick up.
Excellent breakdown! Really enjoyed your perspective and insight. All 4 members are masters IMO
A bassist geeking out over drumming. True Tool appreciation! Thank you
Excellent analysis! Very interesting view points!
TOOL is totally unique, really on it's own league. The greatest musical phenomenon of recent times. These guys are revolutionizing music, not just Rock/Metal but music in general. Genius work of composition, like Yes and Rush was back then but even better. It's just incredible.
Add meshuggah up
@@arlancastillo1637 Meshuggah did but in all honest their formula has stagnated a fair bit. Thier technical ability is amazing but their composistion skills stopped getting better years ago. Dont get me wrong they are amazing bit they stopped changing the game.
I love how knowledgeable you are. Would love to hear you react to jazz and funk. Thundercat? Vulfpeck? Snarky Puppy?
Check out 10000 Days (Wings Part 2), underrated bass part
That's like one of the only songs Justin uses finger-picking for and it is absolutely beautiful.
yopu are one of my favourite bass players, scale the summit its one of myu favourite bands and tool wass so much importtant in my journey to became a musician , i mean all the thing i love in just one video, amazing
really impressive insights, usually these youtubers who do these type of vids don't say anything particularly sophisticated but you nailed it
I try my best! Really appreciate the kind words!
One of my favorite things is to see people react to hearing Tool for the first time. It’s always blowing their minds
My mind still gets blown hearing them
This bass tone is something incredible
Great video! Not too long, not too short, and your analysis is on point. You know your stuff! Looking forward for more
This bass tone and style got me to buy one, learning may way through all the Tool classics and The Pot is very fun to play
Very well analysed and professionally done here. Awesome review my friend! 🎉🎉🎉
Nice work. I like the way you present things to us and I look forward to more.
Every time I heard the pot I never even thought about the bass solo. Not even as a guitar solo or anything, it was just apart of the ambience and the feeling of the song (like you said) and now I only appreciate it more.
I saw Tool this past October at the Aftershock show and they played this. It was absolutely phenomenal live.
Tool and A perfect circle are just amazing as they let each member shine in each song. They don’t need to do a solo. Each song shows the members are incredibly talented. And they feature the drums and bass over the guitar. That’s what hooked me.
Definitely the most sexiest bass tone ever - I can listen to this track on repeat forever!
what a great approach and execution of an analysis vid for tool... well done!
Thank you kindly!
This is probably my favorite bass song of all time. So much funk
