For context, since very few of us online know where this is:
The Nolichucky Dam is a couple miles south of Greenville, TN in the far eastern section. It's about 45 miles north of Asheville, NC.

The rule with dams is that ALL dams eventually fail unless they are purposefully dismantled. They may last for many years but eventually they WILL fail. The extreme rainfalls we have now are making dam failure, floods, mudslides much more likely. People should never live in the flood zone below a dam. They shouldn't live in a flood zone at all.

I live in the area and saw a river that we often visit about 10' above normal height. Took away at least one trailer at a nearby campground. One was still there as of yesterday only because it was pinned against trees. I'll see today if it's still there or not. People were pulling their trailers out of there the day before. I saw emergency vehicles towing rescue boats which I have never seen before in my entire life. Going today to see if the Elizabethton covered bridge was affected. Serious stuff. I'm glad to be on high ground and on a slop where water doesn't accumulate.

It disappointed me when I learned that they let that dam get to the point that it couldn't generate electricity any longer, and from then on just let it build up with mud to be routinely dredged out from time to time. Who knows maybe if they cared more to maintain it, it would have had the tlc to withstand this sort of thing, and they wouldn't have decided to just let it boil over like that/had the means to prevent it. But, that would cost money I guess and we best spend it on some other means. Me I wish we had hydro electricity in Greene county.

Or, we don't understand that the engineering is fradulent. Yet. What is the purpose of a dam? Stop water. Is it doing that? No. Anyone need more information? here it is : either we put up with this and see a lot more, or we don't. If you have a third alternative, put it here.

You would think experts would lower the levels of the dam before the storm approached?

This dam has no lake behind it. It is designed to continuously allow the Nolichucky River to flow over it once the river reaches a particular height. But the amount of rainfall from Helene is what's causing the issue.
