This dam has no lake behind it. It is designed to continuously allow the Nolichucky River to flow over it once the river reaches a particular height. But the amount of rainfall from Helene is what's causing the issue.
let's keep making cuts to government spending... giving rich people tax breaks and let all infrastructure fall into such disrepair it can cause death and destruction.
"This is a tough hurricane, one of the wettest we've ever seen, from the standpoint of water." -Literal quote from Donald J Trump about hurricane Florence
This dam should be looked into for dam maintence failure. Do not replace it. An adequate dam will be possible in this era of a lack of quality of engineering and politics.
The dam, itself is over 100 years old and hasn't produced electricity in decades. After this ceased in 1972, it was supposedly left in place for flood control, but this is also laughable, as it has only one small gate that could never hope to alleviate even moderate swells of excess water.
The rule with dams is that ALL dams eventually fail unless they are purposefully dismantled. They may last for many years but eventually they WILL fail. The extreme rainfalls we have now are making dam failure, floods, mudslides much more likely. People should never live in the flood zone below a dam. They shouldn't live in a flood zone at all.
But we have a "climate change water shortage,"...remember? And this thing with hurricanes occurring in hurricane season? That's a reason to tax and spend style moneylaundering.
At my house, we do have a water shortage problem. I look at all that water and feel just a tiny bit of jealousy. Both too much and too little water are signs of climate change. But you probably know that.

Dont worry, we just approved another 8 billion in aid!
Oh wait thats to Israel 😂
Irrelevant, as there's an entire branch of government that is dedicated to disaster relief called FEMA.
No to Ukraine
No, that would be Ukraine. Yep, 8 billion. 🙄
* Aid to Ukraine AND Israel
But we have electric charging stations…
😂
Maybe, just maybe, the infrastructure should have been designed for such a situation.
Instead of sending money to countries like Israel and the Ukraine perhaps they need to use the money to fix these situations? Our government no longer serves the people.
It was, 100 years ago. Dams and bridges need maintenance and repairs to stay in good working order. These things cost money. Tax cuts and spendings cuts for the last 50 years has left no money for repairs.

Anybody in politics ever thought of passing a bill to fix America's failing infrastructure. This where our tax dollars are needed. Not the nefarious ways in which it is now spent.
No, our government just wants to send billions overseas. Think of all that money we sent to Ukraine. We could’ve fixed all kinds of issues with that. Like Maui, Pahl, Ohio, and now the southeast. But nope. We have to send it overseas.

I just checked Google Maps and found no warnings about the bridge. I'm 5579 miles away in West Africa and edited that the bridge is out due to flooding. Local authorities need to make people aware quickly in situations like this.

If a storm and heavy rains is predicted, why don’t they start lowering the level of the damn hours if not a day or two before hand?

If it was necessary, more than likely yes.

The media is a local channel in Tennessee. They are reporting on an event in a neighboring county.
Most people in that area have no idea whether they live upstream or downstream of the dam.
Sadly, yes. We've all heard that "Ignorance is bliss.", so I'll just be diplomatic and say that there's a lot of bliss in this area....
You would think experts would lower the levels of the dam before the storm approached?
Clearly you're no expert.

This dam should be looked into for dam maintence failure. Do not replace it. An adequate dam will be possible in this era of a lack of quality of engineering and politics.
Dam replacement is not possible.
The dam, itself is over 100 years old and hasn't produced electricity in decades. After this ceased in 1972, it was supposedly left in place for flood control, but this is also laughable, as it has only one small gate that could never hope to alleviate even moderate swells of excess water.
Pete you're doing such a good thing worrying about the infrastructure that's the second major bridge that went out in 2 days
Meanwhile Japan has already solved this problem. And they didn't pay taxes for it
The rule with dams is that ALL dams eventually fail unless they are purposefully dismantled. They may last for many years but eventually they WILL fail. The extreme rainfalls we have now are making dam failure, floods, mudslides much more likely. People should never live in the flood zone below a dam. They shouldn't live in a flood zone at all.
You are not going to distract me from the kamala clown show
Well...no one driving on that bridge...that's for ...dam Shure...

There are morons who get their history from Confederate statues. Anyone who studied the Nazis will understand what happens when an aggressive nation with nationalist desires conquers another country. They want to conquer others. This is the fourth nation Russia has invaded and Putrid Putin has expressed his desire to regain the "glory" of the Soviet Union by conquering others including NATO countries. In ten years, the money spent on illegals will come to $680,000 billion dollars. Meanwhile, they will work jobs Americans wouldn't, open businesses and help our economy with workers as our population, without immigration, is decreasing.
So does that mean you want a bigger government that helps people , and rebuilds infrastructure just asking. Stay safe
They sound like commies to me ...looking for a government handout.
Agreed. The rescue and recovery should be funded by the people living in the affected area. Let them "pull themselves up by their own bootstraps."
Golf courses & High-Rise Towers isn't considered helping people or communities same goes for a person that just bounces around the white house like a pinball until the game is tilt.
That means you have trouble understanding complex issues or history or even facts.
I live in the area and saw a river that we often visit about 10' above normal height. Took away at least one trailer at a nearby campground. One was still there as of yesterday only because it was pinned against trees. I'll see today if it's still there or not. People were pulling their trailers out of there the day before. I saw emergency vehicles towing rescue boats which I have never seen before in my entire life. Going today to see if the Elizabethton covered bridge was affected. Serious stuff. I'm glad to be on high ground and on a slop where water doesn't accumulate.
Glad you are ok. What an awful day for so many.
I live on a decent sized hill in Kingsport. The creek in the middle of the valley was probably up to 8 or more feet, normally like a 2 foot or less gentle creek. Don't think people realize how much water we have gotten
Everything around the covered bridge is blocked off. Even the state road near it. Can't get near it except on foot. I have to take a back way to get to Bristol tomorrow.
