Obviously people hate Red Cross. As a result we are discontinuing the fundraiser. We were unaware of the issues with this organization. We have ran fundraisers with many different organizations over the years. I would like to add another organization in its place, however I’m sure there will be issues with just about any organization from someone. The money donated to this point will still go to ARC. A big thanks for the generosity of those who have donated. I would still like to encourage anyone, if you feel so led, please find an organization to donate to that you are comfortable with. Apologies, just trying to help.

My experience with Red Cross during the numerous hurricanes in Florida is that they are nowhere to be found. Rumours kept going around that they were going to be a one place or another but they never showed up. We were 12 days without power and the only help that ever showed up in our area was a small Baptist church from South Carolina. They brought hot food that they cooked on site, showers and laundry trailers, and friendly caring people. The kindness of these people brought tears to so many of us who really needed help.

Wow, that's a pretty broad statement. Not all fund raising/non profit groups are corrupt. Which non profit group have you given to lately that you found corrupt? Putting money directly into someones hand assures 100% of your donation goes directly to a single person but there are 100's of thousands people needing help and it cost a lot of money to manage who needs the money most. If you have information on non profits that are corrupt please let us know who they are so we can avoid giving them money.

You've obviously never lived in a disaster zone. You can hand your neighbor a million dollars and it wouldn't matter. There's nothing you can do with money when a disaster strikes. There's nowhere to buy anything goofball. These Charities provide Essentials from outside of the state. They bring in food water clothing showers toilets all the things that you are deprived of when disaster strikes. Why don't you keep your mouth closed.

The Red Cross is the worst place to donate money. In 2011 we had a historic flood. It took out a lot of homes. People and local businesses gave millions of dollars to the RC. They gave 3% of that money to those that needed help. The rest they claimed was "to help them in the future". ? School was just starting and they lost everything. Winter in the north east was coming and kids didnt have coats ect. Their future was then. Businesses were pissed as were people. People quickly went to donating goods or cash that went to actually help people. Dick's Sporting Goods which started here originally gave a ton of money to the RC who basically stole it. They then donated backpacks and sneakers for the kids. The RC shows up after a flood . People's basements were flooded . They have inches of mud and sewage in their basements and the RC gives them a cheap broom and a gallon of bleach.

Exactly! There but by the grace of God go I.....we lived in an RV for several years behind a ragged out double wide - medical debt (misdiagnosis requiring hospitalization), until we could get it "liveable".....we are thankful every day for a dry roof over our heads, a structure that holds warm air in winter and cool air in summer, hot and cold running water, a place to lay our heads every night and sleep, a place to wash our clothes and take a shower.
I can tell you that cold has absolutely no mercy, and we learned to build a darn good hillbilly RV skirt every winter.
Ergo, our weekly tithe/offering goes to the local homeless shelter in our small town....there but by the grace of God go I.

I am from the region. Emergency alerts did go out and evacuations were made to many parts of Greene County, SE Hamblen County, and Cocke County all around the Nolichuckey because the emergency alert said the Dam was in imminent danger of failing. I was up at 2 am this morning packing my bags for my family to have to get out if it did fail. Grace be to God despite taking on twice the volume of Niagra Falls and being pummeled with debris from cars, trees, buildings and light poles the dam didnt give way. However, most of the bridges did either give way or are underwater and we have a whole section of our town still cut off from the outside world with no power, way in or way out. On top of that our water treatment plant did take on too much damage and we have been informed allmof Greene County will be without water starting sometime tomorrow when the reservoire tanks will be out. They are estimating at least a week and probably longer without water. If you want to help, we are going to be in serious need of water.

The biggest problem is roads and bridges washed out or blocked with landslides. The one major road is I-40 and it will take months to repair it and get traffic flowing again. Cell towers are out and not connecting to anywhere, even to the local 911 system. We can not call for help if we need medical assistance. I have not heard a single ambulance for two days now, the entire county population is without a way to call for help for anything. I have 4 bars on my cellphone and even calling 911 gets me no one. We are isolated in our homes unless one had a working car which I do not. Being disabled I can not even walk to the next street. This is horrendous.

As another commenter pointed out, you’re essentially uncultured - you’re basing your view on churches via what someone from a big city would think all churches are like. You actually sit and think they’re all out here living in big mansions, driving sports cars, and purchasing yachts lol - it’s so cartoonish. Rural, small town churches aren’t on that level nor are they doing the shite you’re insinuating. You’d know if you actually ventured out into the boonies of these areas and actually got to know the locals and understand the communities to see the churches there are far from whatever nonsense you’re trying to equate them all as being.
I know where I am in rural Appalachia, our small local churches donate the most in terms of giving to the needy in our communities. Toy drives for holidays, dinners where they will cook big meals and deliver them to those in need (and have their doors open to anyone who wants to come to just have a meal), winter coat drives where they take up donations and give them to kids in the area in need, hell the church I live next to just recently had a cookout for the community because there were power outages from the storms. No money donations involved. They’re tiny churches with maybe 40-50 members max on the regular. Pastors are neighbors living just like the rest of us. I’ve never once been judged by any of them despite being open about being agnostic and not following their religion.
Your view on how most of these churches operate, again, seems based on media portrayals. That’s just not how the culture works for the majority of churches across America (especially since there are so many different branches).
One doesn’t even need to be religious to know that much. It just takes being involved with a community and seeing shite for yourself.

We are well award of the destructive force of hurricanes living relatively close to the Louisiana coast. I am sure that a donation will be conducted by our church of which we will gladly participate. If there is anything good that happens from this, is that people from all over come together to help each other in a time of need. We are all neighbors and we all share in each others happiness, best wishes and sadly tragedies. Wishing the best and keeping all of you in our thoughts. Hoping to hear from you soon.

Do you realize how little the red cross gives to help people? It all goes to administrative salaries. Please check that out there are better ways to direct donations. I used to volunteer for red cross until I found out what they actually do with the money

this is absolutely false and not even reasonable to say; Red Cross fiscal spending is audited and reported and available to the public. and they are always over 90% funds spent for cause and less than 10% for business overhead. So if they raise 100 million for Helen disaster , just think about 950 million would go for disaster; who else can raise that kind of money other than the Federal Government. It takes a lot of Red Cross staff to run a charity of this size; finance, marketing, personal office, charity workers and their management, and some very knowledgeable executives to run companies managing billion dollar. charities.
