True enough but these are the mountains. These folks never expected this kind of fallout from a flipping' hurricane. This is not the kind of weather they ever see out there.
@@lucylulusuperguru3487I lived in the mountains in eastern WV. Mountain people do worry about and expect flooding. We had some catastrophic flooding, especially in 1985. Had some big floods since then. Whenever you have that much rain or when we had a huge snow and quick melt, we had flooding. People are always caught off guard and people never want to leave their homes.
@@ReadyForSummerNow yes, but hurricanes hundreds of hundreds of miles inland that are still very strong tropical storms that long after they hit land are not something anyone expects when they live well out of a coastal region. Yeah rain from a heavy average storm system, but certainly not to this level. My family are mountain ppl that live up that way. I know what you mean but nobody could've guessed that storm would play out quite like it did. Hopefully they add some new construction on those dams after this. TVA maxed out their abilities to regulate simply due to volume. However, if it wasn't for the dams already there....things would be sooo much worse. Clearly, after all this, it's shown we need additional infrastructure investments o this doesn't happen again.

Last night my husband and I were talking about the nightmare that hurricane Helene is unleashing on all the states that are in her path, and my husband said, “at least it is not as bad as being at war with a neighboring country”. Later on I thought about what he had said and I arrived at the conclusion that it is a war, a war against nature, and make no mistake, NATURE ALWAYS WINS. I am European, and I have lived in the USA since 45 years after marrying an American. After a couple of years living here I experienced my first hurricane, Gloria, that left NYC in a state of shambles. All day long I remember the windows in our apartment shaking violently and being terrified that they would blow in. By evening when things had died down, I was exhausted. Later, I learned to brace myself for the “Mean Season” between July and October, when one of those monstrous storms can decide to make landfall in your area while you are trying desperately to prepare for it. I learned that there is absolutely nothing you can do about it, that for those long hours you are at the total mercy of mother nature who is going to decide if you will still have a home at the end of the storm, or in some cases if you will still have your life. It is a full blown war against nature, and you are losing on all fronts. Any place that has suffered from a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, a flood, volcanic eruption or landslide looks like a war zone. The trauma that human beings go through after such events is profound and lasting. During my youth in Europe I never had to live through such experiences, and I find myself wanting to go back there in my tired old age, like a weather refugee. Unfortunately the cost is prohibitive, and makes it very unlikely.
Thank you for sharing your story wexperience. We so need to hear different perspectives to understand what our world is experiencing. Having lived in different places throughout the USA, Europe, the Caribbean, and South America I have learnt that as much as we must think relocating from one place to another is not necessarily the answer… much of the time, the place we want to go back to no longer exists…anything like we remember is challenges. Knowing this, one can be thankful to have a place we can call home …and make the most of our time and energy. Our world is suffering wherever we are. Yet, I know we can each make a difference. We each have a Purpose! One moment at a time learning about our neighbors. I am 77 now, having visited Perú for several months late last year to early May, I came away knowing that as much as I thought possible to return to my country of birth and live out my days… this was never going to be possible. My life in the Inland part of the northwest USA, has many challenges yet returning to a place where culturally and economically life is so different would be impossible…at my time in life. I suffer from constant pain which needs to be managed… The quality of healthcare, stress from the country being in constant state of crisis!…finding gentle kind women and men in a state of Alert because people are constantly being assaulted and robbed, their homes invaded by gangs demanding anything and everything. 🙏 if anyone thinks life is better elsewhere I recommend you relocate there for no less than 4-6months. Once the honeymoon period is over or the country you plan to live in shows it’s true challenges then maybe you will return home to the place which has been your little sanctuary even when you thought there was a better place elsewhere. Ones true home is wi but …this little prayer has always helped me. Grant me the serenity to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference. Thank you again.

I live on the coast. Never expected this in the mountains. We see Hurricanes coming all the time fortunately we usually do pretty well. But this. Absolutely unexpected.
unexpected? it happens all the time. why do you think those mountains are weathered down to small mountains? millions of hurricane remnants over millions of years
Not really, the vast majority of the time when a hurricane remnant gets to the mountains, it's basically just regular rain. The reason big mountains become small mountains is because it's cold in the mountains. Rain falls and freezes, cracking the rock.
@@arresthillary9502 Maybe it happened all the time a million years ago, but it has not happened like this in a least 70 years, because that is how old I am.
That local EMD Emergency Management Director, needs to call the predominate Cell carrier, and have them bring in a COW, Celltower on Wheels! They have them truck mounted too. Demand that they do it!
They are. Some areas have gotten some Wi-Fi and internet service back. My grandson attends Western Carolina University and they got Wi-Fi & internet service late this afternoon, Still no cell phone coverage, though. Many towers down. The entire 911 system went down yesterday and I’m not even sure it’s back up, fully.
There are very limited routes for anyone to get into these areas and there are literally hundreds of miles of damage. This isn't an isolated incident. Western NC is closed. Interstate 40 is closed over 100 miles east of Asheville at I-77 in Statesville. Just fyi, they are choppering some things in and this ks going to take a while.
@bobmcnelis3648 My sis is starting to get service back. Hers has been out since storm rolled through. It's still very spotty and comes & goes, but she got in touch with us this a.m. She had to drive a town over, but she managed it. She has trees down all over her property but luckily they missed her house. Electric is out and they said it could be a couple weeks bc the grid is like spaghetti & down all over. They loaded up on gas & cranked the generator & are toughing it out.
Heard from my Black Mountain family, all AT&T cell towers are down. Many mudslides, trees fallen on buildings, water/debris/tree damaged homes/vehicles. Looting at Ingles in Swannanowa with roads flooded. Possible helicopters to fly into Black Mountain with food/necessities.
With the amount of devastation in the region, in this instance, I'm not sure scavenging for edible food qualifies as "looting". It will take weeks if not months to restore services and many years to rebuild.
Everyone is talking aboutr Florida but forgetting NC SC GA. Still bad in FL but still. Chimmeny rock is gone. Dam about to break. The whole downtown. Lake lure😢
There are so many small towns & places washed away in all the mountains just on the NC. side, people don't even know about yet. One area is Black Mountain, among many, many more!!!

Again this is exactly why you and your family and friends should have 2way radios!!!! Cell phones are useless in a natural disaster so you have ZERO communication.
FRS (Family Radio Service) and GRMS radios can work even when cell towers are down because they operate independently of cellular networks. FRS radios use radio frequencies in the UHF (Ultra High Frequency) band, which allows them to communicate directly with other FRS radios over short distances. So they can be a good option for talking to neighbors and family who are close by.
We had a flood go through town here back in 2008 and wiped out thousands of homes and businesses. Then in August 2020, a derecho blew through with 140 hurricane winds... in Iowa. I think almost all the tarps are gone now but there are still some buildings that are still damaged. Some didn't have power for 2 weeks. No cell service, some didn't have Internet for months. We here in Iowa, understand the devastation and are and will be praying for all affected, who can't even read this because the cell towers are still down. May God have mercy on all those affected.
Yay for the land hurricane. I grew up in the south and the derecho was the worst storm I had personally ever been in... our whole town looked like a war zone of trees and power lines
Good to see no political BS in here, it's just ppl helping ppl, and wanting to help others. That's the way it should be, this is what brings communities together unfortunately
If you are talking political BS (or not wanting to hear it) would you consider Ron DeSantis outlawing any discussion of climate change the silence of the lambs or something?
Except this is exactly the time to talk about what the two sides have done during disasters and reflect on that. One side just signed a FEMA bill for 1 billion. The other side took off to Cancun & threw paper towels & withheld aid to blue regions. The two sides are not the same & this needs to be addressed.
@@amandawolfe1054 No. You're seeing in real time how Dems handle emergencies and we know how trump did.
This is a very sad disaster, but if Biden treats this like a war I'm sure they will have trillions of dollars in aid money.
Thank you for sharing your story wexperience. We so need to hear different perspectives to understand what our world is experiencing.
Having lived in different places throughout the USA, Europe, the Caribbean, and South America
I have learnt that as much as we must think relocating from one place to another is not necessarily the answer… much of the time, the place we want to go back to no longer exists…anything like we remember is challenges.

Not really, the vast majority of the time when a hurricane remnant gets to the mountains, it's basically just regular rain.
The reason big mountains become small mountains is because it's cold in the mountains.

Again this is exactly why you and your family and friends should have 2way radios!!!! Cell phones are useless in a natural disaster so you have ZERO communication.
Cells usually work in Eastern North Carolina after we flood. Besides. Up in the mountains, CB range is pretty limited due to the density of trees.
And you usually need power to operate a radio
Dont get them from isreal tho
FRS (Family Radio Service) and GRMS radios can work even when cell towers are down because they operate independently of cellular networks. FRS radios use radio frequencies in the UHF (Ultra High Frequency) band, which allows them to communicate directly with other FRS radios over short distances. So they can be a good option for talking to neighbors and family who are close by.

Repubs would tell this entire region to do that by themselves. Dems on the other hand know that we're stronger as a whole and are willing to fund these programs. One side is not like the other no matter what all the Russian bots keep telling you in your echo chamber.
I agree you need community back
That Man said it all, “We need community back “…..🙏🏻🇺🇸❤️
I’m from East Tennessee, living in California, and I am so heartbroken for my home region and people. Truly devastating. It will take years to repair and recover. 😭😭😭
Thank you for posting this video! We living far away have not been able to find that much information.
Thats so true. So grateful to God y'all were safe. And praying for those who aren't. We need each other 🙏🏼🙌🏼❤️🙌🏾🙏🏾
Prayers for everyone affected by this disaster.🙏🙏🙏
I was in Peterborough Ontario and we got 24 inches of rain in an hour. I know this because the kiddy pool in the back is 24 inches high and it was emptied by me that morning and it was filled to overflowing. There are good size hills in the middle of town and the water was comming up through the manholes, even there the water had no place to go everything was full.
I am north of Tampa and measured 3 inches of rain in my garden. We are so lucky but our friend that lives on the other side of 19, by the gulf, his house was flooded and ruined. He can stay in our rental house, thankfully. Stay strong and sending prayers for all.
That is crazy !
Too much rain on a short time will flood ANYWHERE!!!
Oh no😢😢😢. Sending prayers from Uganda. May God almighty intervene🙏🙏🙏🙏
Too late.
I hope that man sees this comment. Im a resident of Jackson county. The WCU students are being fed by the school but our communications were out. Cell service was just restored at 9pm tonight but still no internet service...only cellular data. There were no injuries to any students at WCU either even though there was significant flooding near the campus. So, his daughter is safe. As a parent...it must be crushing to not be able to check on your kids during something like this, so i hope he sees this comment and knows his girl is ok.
Praying you found that your loved ones are safe. God bless you all.
Could you please fly over /check on River Ridge apartments on Fairview and Swannanoa River Road? My 90 year old mom lives there. First building on right when you go through the first entrance on Fairview, near the gas station. Thank you!
Oh my, sending prayers for your mom and hope that help is on the way!
🙏❤😞❤️🙏
Praying she’s safe and sound. 🫶🏼❤️
I-26 is open you should be able to get to her. I’ve only heard swannanoa river rd is bad not anything about river ridge. It’s a little higher than wal mart is.
Merciful Father - Bless this

Seeing beautiful North Carolina unexpectedly crumbling from this devastating event absolutely shatters my heart. At a location that normally doesn't get severe weather like this, is a sole reminder that nowhere is safe.
Prayers 🤲🙏🙏 for you and your family 🙏👼❤️
