I agree Doug. I have always felt that Tool rhythmically are primal and the lyrics and guitar are cerebral. Thus creating the dichotomy of the mind and soul/body with their music.
Best description of Tool I've heard: "There is something Earthy, Primal about Tool. If you're at all at war with yourself or conflicted and need to get reconnected to the Earth's rythms, listen ro Tool; that will fix your issues! Might give you some others though"
@@DavidOakesMusic I would rather listen to a nicely phrased melodic guitar solo that’s rhythmically satisfying over tweedle-tweedle-tweedle-tweeeee! There’s plenty of guitarists that play wicked fast but their solos don’t sound pleasing... they’re just fast. Adam Jones guitar style puts you in a trance.
Doug your analysis of Tool's music is insightful, thank you. After about 35 years of musical doldrums, Tool has brought my ears back to life. Though I'm not sure playing it at full blast in my retirement home is a communally acceptable idea :) All the best, Beamer.
I never realized how long this song actually was. When I listen to it I just get lost in the moment and the whole jamming bridge feels like 2 or 3 minutes but it's much longer than that.
As a guitarist it’s always good to see Adam get some love. His playing is seemingly simple at times, but his ability to create texture with so many cool sounds and sometimes being another percussion sound is just bad ass. Just a perfect example of not needing to play a million notes to be a great guitarist
"I am prayerful that can start to come together as a society of humans on this little pale blue dot..." And this is why the next time you listen to Tool, it should be the song "Descending", also from the album Fear Inoculum. It's a rallying cry for the survival of mankind. It's a relatively positive message, particularly for Tool, and it's also my favorite song on the album for that very reason.
Interesting, you were wondering initially if 7empest had anything to do with Shakespeare's The Tempest, if you are curious to listen to a metal adaptation the band Angra made a whole pretty cool album that is entirely based on "The Tempest", named "Aqua". I love in particular the closing song "Ashes"!
A lot of the rhythms in this song seem to add up to 21, I noticed it when trying to learn the song. The meter at the beginning is 5 + 5 + 5 + 6 = 21 The break (?) at 12:16 is 4/4 and 13/8, if switched into eighth notes is 8 + 13 = 21 The part at 13:43 is 11/8 + 10/8, 11 + 10 = 21 The section starting at 14:50 is three bars of 7/8, 7 + 7 + 7 = 21 I'm sure there are other examples, too, but the main thing is that they all are technically capable of syncing up with one another. We hear several times throughout the song examples of previous sections being played over each other, and they sync perfectly. I don't know what this may mean within the context of the meaning of the song, but it's something to think about.
Doug, you nailed what “part of me” is. More succinctly, it is his shadow, or lower self, often the most of it subconscious. You start making it conscious, it often times comes out with this sort of egoic anger, to try to rebirth itself by tricking you, your ego, to call itself out. But whatever calls out the lower self is egoic, and by its nature another form of the activity that feeds the shadow, inevitably. And it’s the same on 7empest, although 20some years on. A tempest must be just that. Acceptance. It leads us to the door, but cannot go through with us. Cheers for tackling those two pieces together. Not many would, or have. 🙏❤️
this whole album is in part telling their story, 7empest lyrics talk about getting older, approaching death (the inevitable), talks about regrets and atonement. "So try as you may, feeble, your attempt to atone Your words to erase all the damage cannot"
Thanks for discussing why the guitar seems to work so well in 7empest. It's always sounded really outstanding but it's good to know the music theory behind why it does.
The opening is in 21 (3 rounds of “5” and then a round of “6”) hard to hear at first but Adam Jones made a comment about a lot of this song revolving around 7 and subsequently 21 Amazing reviews as ALWAYS!
In high school my friends were all into tool but I didn’t get it. Years later anytime my roommate drove anywhere he would listen to AEnima on repeat and after about 25 times I started catching on to the lyrics a little at a time. Hooked ever since.
Doug's analysis and reaction videos are the best out there. Love the technical breakdowns, he's the only one that can figure out the time signatures and keys/notes etc. Great work man love this song
Fell upon your videos just tonight, absolutely the best, genuine reactions I've seen on youtube! I'm a big tool fan and always find little hidden nods to previous songs, affirming messages already conveyed. Watching along with you i picked up on a new one i'd not heard before! At the 26:20, Justin starts a familiar string of notes which is the underlying beginning movement of "Right in two". Anyone else hear it? :) Thanks for the videos!
Omg, I can’t believe what you just said about re-connecting by listening to Tool. Been an OGT since ‘92 and I swear, what you just said is exactly right for me. Feeling like shit & need to re-center?! Yup, I grab the headphones and I hear what I need to to get back where I need to be. God bless you sir, I would love to to see some Invincible stuff. When you mentioned about the double bass drums, I think Danny is one of the guys that really know how to creatively use the double pedal, instead of obnoxiously repeating fast paced beats. It's the kind of drum beat you can dance along with the groove
Yea you are spot on about Adam. He is genuinely an incredible minimalist on the guitar. Although, there are a few tricky riffs and licks he knocks around, this song included. That is why I have always looked up to him as a player so much. I think that is why a lot of my old shredder buddies never liked Tool.
When I listened to this song for the first time I was like a baby who's tasting the chocolate for the first time :) The solo in this song is a killer!!!
One of my favorites from Tool. Definitely a modern-day Raindrop Prelude in its construction. The calm beforehand, frightening storm and then calm again. One of their best works.
7mpest is one of my favorite Tool songs, both musically and metaphorically. I personally think its meaning can apply to any demagogue who shamelessly manipulates and divides constituents to a point where a destructive "storm" wreaks havoc on everyone. Seeing as how this was released in 2019, it's pretty clear who they're talking about, especially when considering the events that would lead to January 2021. Tool, like many of us, saw a storm brewing back then and this song served as one of the best prophetic warnings of the time. Amazing stuff, & great episode as always Doug!
Tool are talking about the NWO and the dark enlightenment. We live in an unsustainable Orwellian nightmare which will soon collapse. Has nothing to do with Jan 6 or any other liberal talking points, to think otherwise is mental gymnastics.
Tool are indeed rhythmically unique. Also very uniquely rhythmic bands are Meshuggah and Leprous, who just released a HELL of a song this morning. Highly recommend that one as an introduction to that band. It has all their elements. Superior band, Leprous.
My understanding is that some of the songs on this album were effectively finished 8 years before August 2019, so trying to find out a contemporary meaning in 7empest may be challenging.
Part of Me -Tool, was recorded next and in the same building as Killing in the Name of - Rage against the machine. Why they sound like they may play off of each other.
Wow! I super enjoyed this song/reaction! I'm an old school Tool fan. Been listening since the early to mid 90s. This song really struck a chord with me, when I first heard it. I now understand why after listening to your analysis of the song! Awesome stuff, Doug! :)
It's interesting that you chose these two songs. Many of the riffs in Tempest were originally written back in the early Tool days, but finally found their place in this song. I think a good comparison would have been Sweat and Invincible or Pneuma. Regardless, great reaction!
In my personal opinion, the difference these decades have made is, now when Maynard James Keenan et. al walk into a studio to lay down tracks, the producers are standing back and saying, "you do you, we'll be over here counting the stacks of money" instead of "you can't do that, the audience won't understand it!" XD
I have just been inspired to start listening to Tool again. My brother plays drums and sings and used to do covers of them in the late 90’s but forgot how good they are. Thanks for the reminder. 7empest is fantastic. 👍

Of all the reactions I've seen to 7empest I have yet to hear anyone point out the awesome mixing in the last big guitar solo where at just past 10:50 (on the record, not this video) the guitar gets panned to dead center, when they break back out to stereo about a minute later it's just chilling. You'll only really pick it out on a good stereo or set of headphones.
Yes, I would pick one song from each album. Ataraxia, Interior People and Supreme Ascendancy would be my picks, but there are so many great choices. I need to see some experts do King Gizzard
When I first heard this song the day the album released the main "clock riff' reminded me a lot of King Crimson's "Frame by Frame" - which isn't surprising as they're heavily inspired by King Crimson. That main riff in the beginning of 7empast changes time signatures - it is actually 6/8 to 5/8 repeating. I would write out all the time signature changes on this track, but that would take a ridiculous amount of time.. there are so many changes.
I’ve never really bothered with Tool because I thought they were too shouty in the vocals. Looks like I’ll have to revisit them as Tempest was awesome. Danny Carey was on fire.
agreed....the shouty vocals have always been a bit of a problem for me with Tool. The latest album is not very shouty, which is probably why I really dig it.

Adam Jones guitar reminds me of Mick Box of Uriah Heep. Lots of memorable idiosyncratic notches in the playing in amongst a smooth, slippery overall tone.
"Part of me" reminds me of the power imbalance between a parent and a child. Given that they (children) are quite literally a part of their parents in a sense. "You don't speak" (unless spoken to or some such shit) "You don't judge" which children often don't because they trust parental figures unquestionably when they are very young. I've never heard anyone from the band elude to this and have no idea if that's what the song was about, but for me personally it always reminded me of this.

Been a big tool fan for a long time , this is my favourite song of all time :)
More Tool! Pushit Salival will blow your mind
Take it from an old Tool fan. "Part of Me" is simply about Maynard's junk. No need to over think it.
All tool songs are about buttsecks
Yep. Maynard would laugh at this breakdown.
I was wondering if anyone had the heart to tell him.
So is the bonus track named Maynards Dick
+1
25:41 - A little Yoda-moment there from Maynard "Your words to erase all the damage cannot". :)
Adam shines on this one like crazy
Justin Chancellor has been on every album except Undertow and the Opiate EP.
7empest is a great track with which to cut your teeth on. That said, the entire Ænima album cover to cover was TooL in their prime
Lateralus is their magnum opus, although I do actually prefer aenima
So glad we have Ben here to tell us when TOOL was in their "prime."
